ELEMENTARY SUMMER FAITH FORMATION

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

(for children entering grades 1-5 in fall 2019)

Summer Dates: July 15-18 & 22-25

(Monday – Thursday from 9am-12 noon)

Elementary Faith Formation is inspired by the "Catechesis of the Good

Shepherd", a Montessori-based contemplative approach for religious formation.

Children spend some time in our “Atrium”, interacting with beautiful handmade

materials to illuminate the Gospel stories, engage the essentials of our faith and

nourish the child's inner-most spiritual longings. Children also have an experi-

ence with crafts and music & motion all related to the central theme. The sum-

mer program is filled with energy in a retreat-like setting.

To register your child(ren), visit http://www.ctredeemer.org/we-form/

education/1st-through-5th-grade/. Complete the form and return to the of-

fice with payment. Late fee dues apply. A required parent meeting will take

place during the first session for one hour to relay all important information.

Please prayerfully consider being part of our catechist/coordinator team. For

questions, please call 248-391-4074 or email Gabriela at

[email protected].

Tithing Committee

Members Needed

Did you know that Christ the

Redeemer donates 10% of our

monthly offertory collection to

charitable organizations? As part of

our baptismal promise, we take care

of those in need. Would you like to

be part of the committee that de-

cides where the money can be allo-

cated? They meet once a month to

discuss and determine what organi-

zations, both globally and locally will

receive our donations. We ask for a

3 year commitment, which begins in

August. If you could spare a couple

hours a month please call Lisa Pratt

in the office at (248) 391-1621 ext.

Not your ordinary food drive

We are collecting tools and miscellaneous items, (new and used) for

our youth summer mission project with the Motor City Blight Bust-

ers. Tools, gloves beverages, dust masks, garbage containers and bags

will be used as the kids help clear blighted areas in Detroit this July on

their Summer Mission.

Tags will also be available for bike locks for CCRT, Catholic Community

Response Team in Pontiac. CCRT collects bikes for Pontiac residents who do

not have access to an automobile. With every bike donated, they give a bike

lock. All items are due back at church the weekend of June 29/30. Thank you!

Christ the Redeemer

The idea for Castelot (CAST uh low) Summer Scripture

was actually sown back in 1990 when I attended a summer

scripture conference at St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein

IL. My nephew Matt was making his first communion that

summer and I wanted to be there for the weekend. I looked

for a conference that I could attend in the Chicago area.

What excited me about the conference was that Jack Shea was one of the pre-

senters. I went back every summer for six more years. Joanne Plant joined me

for several of those years. In 1995 Joanne and I approached the Archdiocese

about hosting a conference at the newly opened St. John Retreat Center at the

site of our former seminary. The first summer scripture was held in 1996.

We named our summer scripture in honor of Fr. John Castelot who taught

almost 50 years at St. John Seminary. Jack was with us the first two years of the

conference, but died in 1998. The Castelot Summer Scripture continued for 13

years at St. John Center.

In the fall of 2009, with the reorganization of the Archdiocese, St. John

Center was closed. Officially Castelot Summer Scripture came to an end, but Jim

Kiefer and I decided to keep it going. We moved to St. James Parish in Novi for

three years, and this year will be our seventh year at Christ the Redeemer, our

24th year. Mary Elizabeth Murray and Mari Reyes are part of the planning team,

with lots of help from CTR volunteers who help set up and serve the meals.

Most of those attending are from our local area, but we have some who come

from Saginaw and Toledo, and a few people from other states.

Castelot Summer Scripture is set in the context of prayer: we gather for

morning prayer and evening prayer, with afternoon Eucharist just before dinner.

There are four presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday and three on Thursday.

The content of the lectures is both challenging and stimulating. While not for

beginners, neither is it for experts. It is meant for ordinary people who have a

love of scripture and a thirst for deeper understanding.

This year we are welcoming back one of our favorite presenters, Fr. David

Neuhaus, S.J., from Jerusalem. David will be leading us on an exploration of the

multiple texts in the synoptic Gospels. We'll begin where Mark's Gospel begins:

at the River Jordan. Then Matthew's version, followed by Luke's account of the

Baptism. Each version of the narrative helps fill in the depth and variety of the

portraits we have of Jesus.

Megan McKenna is also coming this year as our guest. She will preach at

Tuesday Liturgy.

There is a tuition charge for the summer scripture, but we do have an even-

ing rate for those who might be interested in joining us for a one of both eve-

nings. Anyone is welcome to join us for Mass at 4:00pm on, Tuesday, Wednes-

day and Thursday afternoon. Tuesday Evening Taizé prayer will be an hour later

than usual, at 8:00pm.

If you would like to join us for an evening session, (without dinner) we are

suggesting a $10 donation. Complete schedule and topics are available at

www.castelotscripture.com. The evenings are part of the continuing series of

talks, but each presentation should stand alone without too much difficulty.

Please note our upcom-

ing Confirmation Orientation Regis-

tration (for current 8th graders who

will be moving into 9th grade in the

2019-2020 school year) will be held

ber 17 at 5:30pm. Parents and Teens

only need to attend ONE orientation.

CHRIST THE REDEEMER SERVICE

It's Okay to Be Human . . .

We’re brought up to be strong, self-

sufficient, independent people. We tend to

think that if we ask for help, it’s a sign of weak-

ness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden,

stuffed deep inside. However, that’s not God’s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear

one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” God wants us to care for

others - and allow others to care for us in our time of need

If you’re sad or struggling inside, don’t suffer alone. Ask for help. We’ve got

a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and

help you through a tough time. Men are matched with men, and women with

women. (It’s completely confidential too!) To find out more about Stephen Min-

istry for you or someone you know, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Lead-

ers: Karen Swietlik or Margo Clarfelt. By calling the parish office or email ser-

[email protected].

NO HAZ Day

There will be a No HAZ day on Saturday, June 22 at Oakland University in

Rochester from 8am-2pm. To accelerate the drop off process:

Please separate materials in your trunk, trailer or truck bed into three types:

paint, electronics and other hazardous waste.

You will need to fill out a registration form and present your driver’s license

or other proof of residency and pay by cash or check.

No HAZ collection events are open to any Oakland County resident but

those living in a NO HAZ community receive special pricing because of their

community’s membership. Any resident of a NO HAZ Consortium member

community can attend any collection event. Most communities charge $10, paid

by cash or check at the event. Some communities require residents to present a

voucher ( paid or free) at the event. Check with your community to see the cost.

Consortium member communities include Independence Township, Lake Ange-

lus, Lake Orion, Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Oxford, Ox-

ford Township and Waterford Township. This is sponsored by Oakland Coun-

ty. Questions, call (248) 858-5656.

Refugee Update and Needs: Drivers and ESL Interpreter

The North Oakland Catholic Parishes’ (NOCP) outreach assistance of two

Congolese refugee families living in Warren continues in the spirit of Christ’s

scriptural urge that we welcome strangers among us in need. Initially assisted by

Samaritas, the two families are coping with the challenges of acculturation in an

unfamiliar environment, the adults especially dealing with no ESL (English as a

second language) skills. The school-aged children are, however, making good

progress immersed in public school classes. Both families have expressed grati-

tude for NOCP donations of infant care items and assistance with transportation

to medical appointments. NOCP seeks further volunteers able to respond to

other transportation needs of the families as well as anyone with Swahili lan-

guage skills willing to assist our ESL trainers. If you are able to help with trans-

portation or with ESL, please contact Karen Swietlik or Lisa Pratt in the parish

office.

To whom do we tithe:

World Medical Relief

World Medical Relief collects surplus medical supplies, that would other-

wise be wasted, and distributes them to where they are needed, whether it’s local-

ly, nationally or globally. If not for their service, many of these medical items

(e.g., walkers, canes, crutches, bandages, nutritional supplements, etc.) would end

up in a landfill.

WMR also collects prescription medications and operates a state-licensed

pharmacy that distributes medicine to under- and uninsured people in Michigan.

In addition, they provide local homeless shelters with much-needed blankets and

hygiene kits through their Blanket Relief Program.

World Medical Relief is headquartered in Southfield, Michigan. For more

Upcoming Events

July 2 – Annual trip to Cedar Point

July 8-12 – Summer Mission

July 12-14 – Summer Mission Camping and Canoeing

reflection From the youth minister, John 16:12-15

Today’s Gospel reflection is somewhat of a continua-

tion of last week’s article. Perhaps it’s because my car is in

the shop, but I’m running on a theme here.

Last week we reflected on how adding fuel to the gas

tank in our car is not unlike calling on the Holy Spirit in

prayer when we need “more gas in our tank” or Holy

Help.

There is a long running joke that real men don’t ask

for directions. I don’t know how accurate this statement

is, but I do know my husband prefers to figure his way

around traffic (especially with all the road construction

we’re currently experiencing) rather than check his GPS. I

think it’s because he considers it a challenge and wants to

figure it out on his own. Somehow, for him, this is fun.

For me, I do not like to be lost…and I get lost really easi-

ly. I can get lost going around the block (and have) so I

prefer to know exactly where I’m going. I prefer to have

turn by turn navigation. Ideally, I’d like to have studied

out a route before even leaving my house.

This brings me to another way the Holy Spirit is com-

missioned to help us and make a huge difference in our

lives. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus promises his Apostles

that “the Spirit of truth” will guide them. It also says that

Jesus gave his followers only the information he felt they

could take in at the time. It’s kind of like the GPS on my

phone. I only seem to know the information one step at a

time, when I would often like to see the entire route. The

Holy Spirit is our road map.

Are you willing to follow it?

I’ve known teens who’ve struggled with questions

like, “Where should I go with my life?” Isn’t it nice to

know there are directions?

God could have sent Jesus as a role model and then

left the rest up to us. But, because God knows and loves

us so well, he wants the best for us. That means we have

guidance whenever we want it. Here are a couple of im-

portant tips to remember when we go to look for that

guidance.

First, Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to his disciples in a

group, not as individuals. So, we need to remember that

we are part of a community of believers and as such, we

need to lean on each other for support and help. That’s

one reason that our Mass is so crucial to our faith. We

pray and worship together as a community. We have a

faith family ready and waiting to help us sort through the

details of life and to make those big decisions. We can

rely on their wisdom and experience.

Second, the Spirit’s guidance comes to us through

the dead as well as the living. We believe in a

“communion of saints” and can call upon them at any

time for support. The Holy Spirit guides us through their

lives too. We can read about them in the Bible, on the

Internet and in books to learn how they navigated their

faith and lived their lives like Jesus. Their lives can pro-

vide us with part of our road map.

Finding God’s direction in our lives isn’t always easy.

It can be confusing, with many wrong turns and dead

ends. But, every time we reach for the Holy Spirit’s help,

we will find direction. When I look back, I’m amazed at

the journey I’ve traveled and it’s been a pretty great ride.

Think about a time when prayer or discussion with

other Christians helped you find God’s guidance.

Summer Mission 2019

For the past 20 years or so, our

parish has worked with the Motor

City Blight Busters and our teens

have spent one week in the summer

volunteering in the Old Redford dis-

trict of Detroit. We begin our day

getting to know one another with a

social gathering and prayer at CTR

and then car pool to the city to be

Christ’s hands and feed in action.

After a day filled with new adven-

tures, we return home dirty, sweaty

and tired and ready to dive into an-

other day. Our days are filled with a

variety of activities and include paint-

ing murals, cleaning trash, clearing

home sites, spreading mulch and

gravel and even weeding and sweep-

ing the streets. There is no job too

big or too small for a heart that walks

with Jesus. If you have a teen in

grades 9-12 and would like more in-

formation about Summer Mission,

please contact Lisa Andridge in the

Youth Ministry Office. We have a a

teen orientation scheduled for Tues-

day, June 18.

Shop at the Oxford Meijer and help support the

Oxford/Orion FISH pantry

Now through June 22, Oxford Meijer shoppers can double their support of

the FISH pantry by purchasing Meijer Simply Give donation cards. The cards

will help keep the pantry shelves well stocked for months to come. Meijer will

match all cards purchased now through June 22. Proceeds will be converted into

food-only gift cards and used by FISH to stock our pantry shelves with a wide

variety of items for the hundreds of individuals who shop there every month.

The current program is the latest in the Simply Give campaigns Meijer has spon-

sored with Oxford/Orion FISH and other food pantries in recent years. It has

become the largest and most important fundraising effort. Thank you for your

CCRT in conjunction with SVDP is currently conducting a class called

“Getting Ahead” which helps people in poverty in the Pontiac area learn life-skills

to enable them to work their way out of poverty.

Program Highlights include:

 Facilitated program that helps people develop their own plan out of poverty;

participants are referred to as investigators.

Approximately 10 investigators for each session. There are 16 sessions, 3

hours each.

Helps each investigator learn how to build financial, emotional, and social

support networks.

Here’s where you can help: Mentors are needed for our current and fu-

ture sessions. A mentor’s role includes:

Providing support in the investigator’s journey through one-on-one

mentoring.

Maintaining regular contact with them and providing encouragement to exe-

cute the plan they developed. Women are paired with women; men with our

men participants.

The commitment would be for one year. Mentors for the current session

are needed now. If interested, please contact Mike Kerby, session’s facilitator, at

248-830-0053 or [email protected]. Mike can provide additional details and/or

answer any questions that you may have. Training is provided if interested.

CCRT contact info: 248-499-9621; [email protected].

Looking for a pen pal???

We received the following letter in the parish office dated June 3.

From: Rick Crowell #144211/13924 Wadaga Road, Baraga, MI 49908

Dear Pastor,

I’ve been born again since 1990. Have lost my angelic wife and entire family

while in prison for crimes of another. I was recently moved in spirit to begin

writing a church requesting companionship and fellowship. Have written to

dozens of churches with no response. I get it! Have Christians abandoned pris-

oners?

Will write all!

Love in Him, Rick

P.S. Due to new rules you must use blue or black ink on white lined paper

and put your name and address on your letter itself.
