1The unit "Volt" (V) is expressly not a SI base unit (Sys-teme International d’Unites). Only for a better reading wewill pretend "Volt" (V) were a SI base unit. Rememberthe SI base units are m, s, kg, A, K, mol, cd.
2Usually the symbol for voltages is V or v, but it is ratherawkward to choose the same letter for both the symboland the unit of a quantity. The following two allocationswill show you why: U = 3 V, V = 3 V. Hence the symbolfor the Voltage will be U or u.

8 Three Phase AC Systems Drehstrom
Three identical windings (coils) are rotating in amagnetic field. Each windings is shifted by 120oand 240o to the anothers. They are labeld U, V,W in the first instance. In these windings (alsocalled phases) of the described three-phase gener-ator voltages are induced of the same magnitudeand frequency. The only difference is that theirphases are 120o apart.

8.1 Connection of Phases Verkettung der Stränge
It is possible to conduct the voltages of the threephases of the generator to three parts of a distantload (again the three loads are called phases) with6 lines. However, a clever connection of the threesources will reduce the number of necessary linesto four or even three.
Y (Wye) – Connection Sternschaltung
The ends of each winding U2, V2, W2 are con-nected with each other at the so called neutral-terminal. The beginnings of each winding areconnected to three lines L1, L2, L3 which go tothe distant load (3 line power distribution sys-tem). Often a forth line is added and connectedto the neutral terminal. This line is called neutralN (4 line power distribution system). Public lowvoltage (0,4 kV) distribution systems are designedwith four lines.
Die Strangenden U2, V2, W2 werden im „Stern-punkt“ miteinander verbunden. Die Stranganfän-ge U1, V1, W1 werden mit drei Leitern, den „Au-ßenleitern“ L1, L2, L3 verbunden (sog. Drehstrom3-Leiternetz).
Delta – Connection Dreieckschaltung
The end of one winding or phase (e.g. U2) isconnected with the beginning of the next windingor phase (V1). In doing so 3 terminals are createdto which the three lines are connected. There isno possibility to connect the fourth or neutral line(3 line power distribution system). Public highvoltage (110 kV ... 400 kV) distribution systemsare designed this way.

The voltages across one phase (here: source) Uu,Uv, Uw are same to the line to neutral voltages5.
U1N = Uu, U2N = Uv, U3N = Uw.
Die Strangspannungen Uu, Uv, Uw sind gleichden Spannungen zwischen Außen- und Neutral-leiter:
U1N = Uu, U2N = Uv, U3N = Uw.
or in short:U = Uph.
oder kurz:U = Ust.
But you can also find the higher line to line volt-ages6. With the help of the isosceles triangle (U1,V1, N) it is easy to derive the line to line voltages.

Aber es sind auch die sog. Außenleiter- oder Drei-eckspannungen zu finden. Aus den gleichschenk-ligen Dreiecken (z.B. U1, V1, N) ist der Effektiv-wert der Dreieckspannung bestimmbar.

Since 1987 the german low voltage distributionsystem has a line to neutral voltage of 230 V rmsand a line to line voltage of 400 V rms (before1987: 220 / 380 V). How are the voltages in yourcountry?
5In German the line to neutral voltage is called "Sternspan-nung" which means "star voltage". In our case the termY – voltage is quite ok, however rather unusual.
6In German the line to line voltage is called "Dreiecksspan-nung" which means "triangular voltage". In our case theterm delta – voltage is quite ok, however rather unusual.

Using Kirchhoff’s current law with neutralterminal as node the phase currents (currentsthrough each single load) are:
I1 + I2 + I3 = 0.
The line currents I are equal to the phase cur-rents. They are:
I = Iph =UphZ
=U√3Z
.
I = Ist =UstZ
=U√3Z
.
Consider now a balanced load in delta – connec-tion

The phase currents can be calculated as: Für die Strangströme (z.B. I12) gilt:
I12 =U12Z

Z.
The line currents I can be derived with Kirch-hoff’s current law. Use terminal U1/W2 asnode:
I1 = I12 − I31.
Analog equations can be formulated for the othernodes. We assume furthermore that the load isbalanced. In this case the phase of the phasecurrents I12 and I31 is 120 o apart. With thehelp of trigonometry we can derive
I =√

Z.

8.3 Power, Power Factor, Work Leistung, Leistungsfaktor, Arbeit
The (active) power, delivered to one phase (here:load) is:
Pph = Uph Iph cosϕ.
Pst = Ust Ist cosϕ.
The total power of all three phases is:
P = 3Pph = 3Uph Iph cosϕ.
Die gesamte Wirkleistung aller drei Stränge istdann:
P = 3Pst = 3Ust Ist cosϕ.
It is independent in which way the phases are con-nected. Even when the power is to be calculatedwith line current I and line to line voltage U andyou must decide wheather there is a delta – or Y– connection, the results are identically.
Using Y – connection it is Bei Sternschaltung gilt:
P = 3U√
3I cosϕ =
√3U I cosϕ.
Using delta – connection it is Bei Dreieckschaltung gilt:
P = 3UI√3
cosϕ =√
3U I cosϕ.
In systems with balanced sources and loads the(active) power can be calculated as
P =√
3U I cosϕ,
the reactive power as für die Blindleistung:
Q =√
3U I sinϕ,
and the apparent power as und für die Scheinleistung:
S =√
3U I =√P 2 +Q2.
Remember:
U : Line to line voltage or delta voltage (e.g. 400V in public distribution systems),
I: Line current (current through one of the linesL1, L2 or L3)
ϕ: Power angle i.e. angle between line to linevoltage and line current.
Hierbei ist:
U : Dreieckspannung (z.B. 400 V im öffentlichenNiederspannungsnetz),
I: Strom im Außenleiter,
ϕ: Phasenverschiebungswinkel zwischenStrangspannung und Strangstrom.
Also in three-phase AC systems the power factoris

When we assume constant power, the work canbe calculated by multiplying with the operatingtime t:
(active) work: W = P t,reactive work: Wq = Qt,apparent work: Ws = S t.
Wirkarbeit: W = P t,Blindarbeit: Wq = Qt,Scheinarbeit: Ws = S t.
