    A Very Good PlaceW

hen we asked Nehemiah what hewould say to the Yuma communityabout Crossroads Mission he con-

templated for a moment and simply said as henodded his head up and down, Its just a verygood place. A very good place.Nehemiah came to Crossroads on May 8,2003. He was referred by the hospital to theMens Shelter. There, Nehemiah got helpfrom Harold, one of the Case Managers, andhe was put in the Case Management Program.Nehemiah had recently moved from Indian-apolis and was struggling to get his SocialSecurity check transferred over to the state ofArizona. This is Nehemiahs only source ofincome. Having to undergo a dialysis proce-dure three times a week was another of hischallenges. After 2 months at Crossroads, Nehemiah wasable to have his check transferred to Arizona,

he opened a checking account and got his

funds deposited directly into it. But, what he is mostproud of is his new home. With the help of his Case Manager, he was able to moveto his own studio apartment at the Hotel San Carloslocated in the Old Yuma area. From there, he getspicked up three times a week to go to the hospital andcontinues his dialysis.Harold helped me a lot. He stuck with me, saysNehemiah about his Case Manager. The Case Management Program is aprogram free of charge open toanyone who is wanting tochange their homeless situa-tion or lifestyle. Our CaseManagers work with eachperson individually to helpthem achieve their goals andmeet their immediate needs.Thank you for your dona-tions. They keep programs

    The Power of a Haircut

Have you ever been to the barber shopor the styling salon feeling a littledown and come out feeling like you

could conquer the world after a good haircut?

Well, imagine being on the streets and not feel-ing good about yourself. Youre hot, dirty andyour hair in a mess and you have no money.Such is the case of many of the men that cometo Crossroads on a daily basis. One of thosemen is Alfred (Not his real name).Alfred comes to the shelter regularly to use theshowers, the day room and to stay as an over-night guest. During his last stay, Alfred wasable to get a treatmany of us takefor grantedahaircut. PattyBartels, a

    profes-sional

hairdresser was volunteering that dayand she was giving much neededand appreciated haircuts for free. That day, Alfreds self esteem rose

to a higher level by the power of ahaircut. He had a new look.Even his eyebrows were trimmed. Were thankful for people likePatty. Much of what is accom-plished at Crossroads is done withthe help of volunteers. Some ofthose volunteers are part of theCommunity Service Program andwe are thankful that they choose toput in their hours at Crossroads Mis-sion. Others are simply caring peoplewith the privilege of having time, skillsand resources available to help us be

better at what we do. If you can, help usby becoming a volunteer. Who knows?Maybe you too will have the power tochange attitudes and to raisesomeones self esteem!

    A Life Lost to

    the Disease

In August the staff and the clients of the Drug and AlcoholRecovery Program gathered at the chapel room to celebratJoseph (not his real name). Unfortunately it wasnt his

graduation from the recovery program. That had already hap-pened the year before. This time, it was the journey of his lifethat was being remembered. Joseph lost his battle to his alcohoaddiction and was found dead in his apartment. Apparently, hedrank himself to his own death. The people who knew himcouldnt believe it. He was doing so well, is what they said.

He had fought his disease for a while now. Last year, hecompleted the Crossroads Recovery Program. He did so well, that sometime later he was hired to work for Crossroads. He wmaking a difference in peoples lives because he had been ther

done that. But he was a quiet man. He started to isolate himself. Hisdisease took his job and then his life.

The Memorial held for Joseph at Crossroads was very mov-ing. The Vietnam Veterans of America Yuma Chapter 835 wathere to present a flag to the Mission since he was a Vietnamveteran. Alas, hes already missed.

You can help stop the disease. Please look for help. The worst thing to do is to ignore it or

become isolated. Loosing this battle can cost you your life. For more information about the Drugand Alcohol Recovery Programat Crossroads Mission, please call (928) 783-
