Mr. Wilkinson praised the support shown by the community and the planning efforts of Alliance staff for moving the project forward. “When you deal with a project that’s north of $50 million, you want to make sure that you get the very best hospital for the very best price for the taxpayers of Ontario,” said Mr. Wilkinson. “This approval, authorized by Cabinet and signed by Minister Smitherman was the last provincial hurdle for us to clear.” The Hospital Foundation, through its Heart & Soul Campaign is raising $20 million to help cover the local share of construction and 100 per cent of the technology, medical equipment and furnishings. “The reason that our project is moving forward is because there are some tremendous people here in our community that have come together with the vision of having a Heart & Soul Campaign—because the hospital is the heart and soul of our community—and it’s the anchor within our Alliance,” said Mr. Wilkinson. THANKS A MILLION!A salute to The Hospital Auxiliary Association of Stratford General Hospital

*1 in 9 women will be affected by breast cancerin her lifetime, and it will take the life of 1woman in every 27.

*This year breast cancerclaimed the lives of 5,300 of our mothers, grandmothers, sisters and friends.

*In 2007 an estimated 22,300 women will be diagnosed

*170 men will be diagnosed and about 50 will not survive

*1% of the female population are breast cancer survivors

Early diagnosis helps save lives. A Digital MammographyMachine will be the cornerstone of our New BreastHealth Centre to be built in our New North Wing.

“Digital mammography represents an important technical advance. The hope isthat it will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, and an improved cure rate for ourpatients,” says Brenda Scott, HPHA Program Director, Medical Imaging.

Digital mammography produces an electronicimage with superior quality. It allows radiologists todetect and diagnose breast cancers with a higherdegree of confidence than film-based mammography.Unlike films, the images can be viewed and manipu-lated on a computer monitor to adjust contrast ormagnification, or to zoom in for greater detail.

Digital mammography has been proven moreeffective in detecting cancer in pre or peri menopausalwomen, those with dense breasts or who are youngerthan age 50. It also detects lesions closer to the skin'ssurface. It is anticipated that the enhanced imagequality along with computerized-aided analysisshould aid in earlier detection of early cancers.

This equipment is still relatively rare in Canadawith less than 20 machines throughout the country.

Local “Heart & Soul” Heroes

Jim McMillanChairman, Board of Trustees

SGH Foundation

Success both in selling and raisingfunds requires many of the samequalities: hard work, honesty andintegrity…and not being afraid to askfor the money.

And Stratford General HospitalFoundation Board Chairman JimMcMillan should know. In helping tospearhead the Foundation’s $20million fundraising campaign, Jim iscontinually drawing on his 50 yearsexperience in sales.

Those years brought himconsiderable accolades. But his trueworth in sales was recognized aftermoving to Mutual Life where he is aqualifying life member of the milliondollar round table — an accomplish-ment shared by only a fraction of hisfellow insurance salesmen.

“There are similarities in sales andraising funds. In both, you have to beable to find a person’s hot button — tofigure out what’s important to themand what makes them tick,” heexplains.

While officially retired, Jim staysactive advising friends andacquaintances on various aspects offinancial planning—life insurance, annuities, estate planning.

“So in a sense I’m not retired, Ijust don’t receive payment for what Ido,” he laughs “I’ve now arrived atthe point where I have the worst, toughest, boneheaded boss I’ve everhad—myself.”

Jim has been Chairman of“umpteen different organizations”,including secretary treasurer of theMitchell Golf and Country Club for 23years. He’s motivated simply to “giveback” to others, expecting nothing inreturn. But as often happens, the act ofgiving — whether it’s been trainingother salesmen, volunteering forcommunity groups and charities, orteaching others to play golf — hasbeen tremendously rewarding.

“I just find when you’re willing togive of yourself, the rest looks afteritself,” he says.

“I do have a soft spot in my heartfor health…and that’s not justbecause they’ve saved my life two orthree times,” he explains.“In fact I’mlike a cat—I must have used upabout 8 of my lives.”

He enjoys representing theFoundation and promoting its needs, enjoying face-to-face encounterswhere his selling background andpeople skills come into play.Underlining the importance of theFoundation’s Heart & Soul Campaign

in support of the Huron PerthHealthcare Alliance’s Stratford site, heasks people to picture what their liveswould be like without a Hospital.

“The Stratford General site can bean outstanding regional hospital. We already have outstandingsurgeons, internal medicine people, technicians, and nurses. We’resecond to none really,” he says.“Weneed to give them the facilities andthe equipment to work with. We’vegot to come up with that money, and that won’t happen just talkingabout it—it takes work.”

But Jim McMillan isn’t all workand no play. While his interest in golfhas diminished somewhat over theyears, he still says the ability tocontrol a ball on the golf course, isone of his greatest pleasures.

He’s also had an enduring interestin music that started early when amusic teacher told him he had perfectpitch.

Harmony in his own life is alsoimportant. He’s learned to trulyappreciate his life and the blessingshe’s received—keeping familyrelationships strong, pursuing thethings that make life enjoyable, andstaying connected.

“Being on the Stratford GeneralHospital Foundation is one of thegreatest blessings going because itkeeps me involved and keeps mybrain active,” he says.

“The expansion ofthe day surgery unitand endoscopy suitewill ensure thepatients have theprivacy they deserve.Right now due topatient volume and

lack of space we arebursting at the seams. Withmore focus on day surgeryand increased endoscopyscreening the expansionwill help us do our jobmore efficiently”.

Jocelyn Manley, RN, Day Surgery

"PACS will increase ourefficiency as radiologists. Nolonger having to put up andtake down films, having theimages available promptly, andbeing able to view them all onone workstation will allow us toget more done in less time. Wepredict this will reduce waittimes," says. Dr. Lynda Harker,HPHA RadiologistShe emphasizes that PACS is notjust a radiology project, with theresults being felt across theboard by patients, referringphysicians and radiologists alike.

Operating RoomsThe current operating rooms were built inthe 1950’s and the methods of surgery and

technology of today are dramaticallydifferent. New operating rooms will be a“cut above” the current rooms, which are

undersized for the number of surgeons, volume of patients and new technologies..

Medical ImagingReducing delays and helping patient flow arekey reasons for the expansion and relocation

of medical imaging to the new north wing, close to emergency, intensive care and

operating rooms. The unit will include a breasthealth centre for women, and state-of-the-artdigital technology like the PACS system that

will revolutionize medical imaging.

“Only 4 cents from every dollar donatedgoes to campaign expenses, so 96 % ofyour donation will go towards theredevelopment project and state-of-the-arttechnology. As per my report at our June7th AGM, we expect fundraising expensesto come in under the 4% budgeted. Theindustry standard is 10 percent.”

Jeff Skubowius, Core Campaign cabinet &SGH Foundation Board member

REDEVELOPMENT CRITICAL FOR YOUR HEALTH

According to BonnieRoyal, ProgramDirectorMaternal/Child whilethe existing unit iswell-designed it isliterally “bursting atthe seams”. “Not

only is it an increase in births it is anincrease in manpower with sixobstetricians /gynaecologists, severalfamily physicians and midwives fromthroughout Huron and Perthdelivering at our hospital…thatkeeps us very busy”, she says.

“The SPD staff is excited about the redevelopmentas we will see an entirely new Sterile ProcessingDepartment. With better access to theinstruments, we will be able to pick the OR caseswith greater efficiency”.

Jaime Martin, Sterile Processing Department Employee

“The physical layoutimproves our abilityto monitor patients, and its proximity toother acute careservices improvespatient flowbetween depart-

ments. I’m thrilled we’re seeing ourplans become reality.”

Dr. Miriam Mann,Chief of Emergency Medicine

“Because of theservices it offers, thehospital in Stratfordsupports a verybroad geographicalarea – all Perth andHuron Counties andbeyond. So when

we look at the benefit, it’s not onlylocal, it’s regional.”

Andrew Williams, CEO,HPHA.

“We’re designing it sothere’s going to be privacyfor the patient– somethingthat is lacking now.”

Donnalene Tuer-Hodes, chief nurse executive

and program director,surgery

Maternal / ChildThere are few things that bring more joy to a family thanthe birth of a child. The present maternal child unit ispatient friendly and modern, however it is full beyondcapacity. It was built to handle about 750 births each yearand we now see well over 1,100. Increased numbers ofbirths requires more skilled practitioners – not onlyobstetricians and family doctors who still deliver, but anincreasing number of midwife deliveries.

Emergency DepartmentFrom caring from a sick child, to the most serious accidentsand injuries, HPHA’s Stratford site Emergency Departmenttreats some 27,000 patients a year from throughout theregion. The new 18-bed Emerg, to be located in a newwing, features many design enhancements over the current50-year-old department, including: larger waiting rooms, separate ambulance and walk-in entrances, and specializedpediatric and gynecology rooms.

ICU / TelemetrySome 570 patients a year fromthroughout the region need themost intensive care our hospitalcan provide. Whether it’s for aheart attack, a car accident orsevere pneumonia, the ICUneeds to be a place you cancount on.

“This place is quitecrowded and old, andour patients wouldappreciate a much nicerenvironment,” says Dr.Tibor Kalos, obstetricsand gynecology. “Alsofor us surgeons, it wouldbe great to work in anicer, brighter place.”

“There will be large, bright, spacious rooms that are fullyequipped. Family members willnotice a big change in the waythat care is provided in the ICU andTelemetry. People will not have thecurrent issues where there is noprivacy, no confidentiality and no

ability to be alone with one’s family at a criticaltime in their care,”

Kathie Cuerden, program director, critical care and medicine.

“Our current ultrasound unit isspread out over two floors andthroughout other departments. Weare thrilled that we will be able tohave one consolidated ultrasounddepartment that will give ourpatients the privacy they deserve andexpect”

Flavio Michelazzi, Medical Imaging

We’re Here for You!

“Doctors make dozens of decisions on what’s best for thehealth of our patients each and every day… We know thekey role that new facilities and state-of-the-art technolo-gy plays in diagnosis, treatment and the well-being of ourpatients. This project revitalizes and modernizes this site.It will help strengthen our physician recruitment andretention efforts… essential for a healthy community.Medical staff, managers and frontline staff have helped

drive the project from block schematics to detailed plans…drawing fromour experiences, and that of other hospitals, in our efforts to make thishospital “the best it can be”. With this tender announcement, all ourwork has been worthwhile”.

Dr Laurel Moore, Chief of Staff, HPHA.
