Happy Fall

Another year is rapidly coming to a close. Everyone seems to be back on track with their regular schedules and activities. Fall is the season of getting things in order, and here at Salt & Light we are doing the same. We are trying a new column in this issue: The Power of Music. Music stirs the soul. The beat of a drum resonates in the very core of our being. One can physically feel the vibration… particularly in Native Drum-ming, Celtic and River Dance. The melodies created by instruments can invite us to tap our feet, clap our hands or sway with the rhythm. Some tunes draw us into a quiet reflective mode, while others make us want to dance with the freedom of little children. Music is Powerful! It affects us emotionally. Often the lyrics are hardly noticed. Some-times they are difficult to understand and yet sometimes our subconscious picks them up. Regardless of our awareness of the word content, they often tell a story or impart a message. We are going to explore some lyrics and consider their impact. Some songs are mini sermons and some remind us of the awesomeness of our crea-tor. We invite you to explore within yourself what the lyrics in these columns mean to you. We hope you will enjoy this addition and we look forward to your comments.

Submitted by Gordon Wheeler with permission It was July 22, 1997 on a Tuesday eve-ning, my opening service of a series of meetings conducted under a tent on the grounds of North Country Christian Re-treat, Upper New York State near the vil-lage of Hermon, NY, when the white dove walking on the grass followed me into the tent. I was informed upon my arrival a day earlier that a white dove was seen flying around the buildings. It appeared friendly and actually would sit on the tent, yet had never entered the tent.

The dove would eat bits of food thrown to it and allow people to come close but not touch it. It eluded any person attempting to touch or pick it up from where it stood. The evening service was already in pro-gress with the people singing and wor-shiping God when I arrived on the prem-ises of the tent with my auto. I saw the white dove walking on a picnic table. It appeared to be eating bread bits placed there by someone. Momentarily I paused to watch the pretty dove eat the bread and then proceeded to walk into the tent and find a back row seat until it was time to take my place as the guest speaker for the week. Almost immediately upon my sitting down, I noticed some people looking at me and staring at something behind my seat. I looked around and saw the pretty white dove walking on the grass inside the tent. lt had followed me in. Shortly after its entrance the dove walked nearly directly behind the back of my chair and hopped up onto the second chair on my left in the same back row. At this point more people observed the movements of the dove, and one child came to the dove attempting to touch it. The dove did not permit the child's touch but did remain on the chair. Somehow the dove's presence in the tent gave me and I'm sure many of the others

who observed the bird, a spiritual and serene feeling ... a feeling of acceptance which we didn't mind ... a sense of awe that the white dove now entered the wor-ship service. The dove seemed content remaining on the seat of the chair while we were all singing, clapping, praising and worshiping God in the remaining mo-ments of the worship time. However, when the time came for my in-troduction by our host and administrator David Gingrich, his closing statements described my involvements founding and directing the North Country Christian Re-treat, now in the 15th year ... and I knew he was about to give my name and invite me to the podium. Just then, the pretty white dove decided to fly up into the air inside the tent mak-ing a complete circle over the entire con-gregation, causing all the people's atten-tion to focus on the white bird. Then it made its second circle around the inside of the tent. While it was on its second time around the inside of the tent a very peculiar thought came to my mind ... WHAT IF THIS BIRD SITS ON MY HEAD? I now had my Bible in my hand and was prepared to go to the podium when the most amazing and startling sensation hap-pened! I heard the fluttering of wings above my head and suddenly realized the bird was descending directly on my head and was

landing there!! Startled and perturbed, my first thought was to attempt to gently urge the dove to depart so I gingerly moved my right hand with my forefinger extended at the dove, thinking it would quickly flyaway. BUT SURPRISE! Sensing a minor stinging pain, I pulled my hand back and looking up I saw the head of the dove with a firm grasp on my forefinger. I quickly got the message that the dove did not want to leave his perch. Now I hear people laugh and snicker as they are watching my predicament so I de-cided to place my whole hand up to-ward the dove with my fingers tight to-gether. I thought this might be more in-timidating to the dove and frighten it away. Again, SURPRISE! I felt the pecking of the bird's beak against all my fingers…rapidly pecking my hand as though to say, “You mind your own affairs and I will mind mine." Standing to my feet, I then decided to go to the podium with the bird on my head and I spoke to the congrega-tion...they would get both of us. I thought walking and changing my posi-tion would probably cause the bird to fly off my head. But it did NOT...the bird remained firmly on my head. People were laughing. I was perturbed and perplexed...cameras flashed as some people took photos while I again

Page 6: Fall 2010 Volumn 4 Number 3

attempted to urge the dove off my head as I stood behind the podium in front of the whole congregation. Moving my hand up with all fingers clutched together again, the same reaction. The bird pecked hard this time as if to say, "Please leave me alone!" I agreed to leave him alone and proceeded to speak to the congregation.

The bird remained on my head for nearly five to ten minutes when I began to have thoughts that perhaps the dove might do what birds can do if they remain in the same location. This could soil my hair and become quite embarrassing.

Amazingly as I thought of this, it seemed the bird knew my thoughts and it flew out in front of me made a halt circle and came back and sat on my left shoulder. It was so close, I could hear the dove's cooing as it sat very contented for an-other length of time as I was speaking to the audience.

Needless to say, the dove's presence made it difficult for me to concentrate on my subject matter...but I attempted to

adjust to what I now see as a DIVINE PHENOMENON.

The dove's next move was from my left shoulder to fly around the back of me and come and perch on the arm of the micro-phone stand on my right side, facing the audience. This gave me more liberty to move around and continue my message entitled, "WHAT IS SIN?"

I'm not sure what sign this signified, having the dove first on my head, then perched on my left shoulder and finally perched on my right side on the microphone arm. I do know the dove is symbolic, biblically, of the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:16 "And Jesus when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the SPIRIT OF GOD DESCENDING LIKE A DOVE, and lighting upon Him: and Lo a voice from heaven, saying This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Luke 3:22 "Now when all the people were baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, and the HOLY GHOST DE-SCENDED IN A BODILY SHAPE LIKE A DOVE upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved son: in thee I am well pleased. " John 1:32 "And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending LIKE A DOVE, and it abode upon Him.”

NEW BEGINNINGS – A NEW ERA

According to Biblical accounts, it appears God used the Dove to express His wish to herald the time of NEW BEGINNINGS and a NEW ERA. The life and death of Jesus on this earth coupled with His res-urrection heralded the beginnings of the day of GRACE ... SALVATION FOR ALL PEOPLE. GOD motivated Noah in the Ark to send out the DOVE to check on the earth and newly cleansed world for life, heralding a NEW ERA. Genesis 8:10-11. The Dove brought back an olive leaf re-vealing new life on the cleansed earth. NEW BEGINNINGS! Though I gently attempted to discourage the Dove from off its perch on my head... I was strongly made aware that the Dove had no intentions to depart because of my suggestions. However, its plan was to be seen by a congregation of believ-ers in this most unique, perhaps Divine

Pose to once again herald a sign of NEW BEGINNINGS...A NEW ERA. MARANATHA!!! A FINAL NOTE I should not close this story without giv-ing you a final strange incident which this same dove performed on the Satur-day AM service. I was asked to conduct teachings on Israel, prophetic informa-tion, and was to take both morning ser-vices...giving opportunity for questions and answers. Usually the morning attendance is fewer, and at this particular AM service, no one occupied any chairs on the front row. However, when the time arrived for my speaking, the same pretty white dove saw fit to once again come into the tent and amazingly chose to sit directly in front, facing me, perched on the back of a metal chair in the front row. The Dove sat in the same position for the whole 2 hour morning session...as if to give consent...yes, as if to hear what our Lord has to say regarding the Chris-tian's role in bringing peace to the Mid-dle East. Psalm 122:6 At the close of the camp meeting days, the Dove departed as mysteriously as it appeared. No one lays claim to the ownership or knows the whereabouts of the divinely sent pretty, white Dove. Praise the Lord!

Isabel’s Testimony God’s Protection

We were supposed to rent a car to go to Fort Mac Murray to visit my niece. I had not seen her in about 40 years. Unforeseen circum-stances got in the way. I was so disap-pointed I got physically sick. I was sick to my stomach and had to go to bed. I cried all af-ternoon. I prayed. I asked God why? There had to be a reason, but only He knew. I asked Him to tell me but I wasn‟t getting any answers. The next day my grandson took my husband and I back to his brother‟s house. That night when my brother in law got home he asked if we had heard about the accident on the Fort Mac Murray Road. A Tanker truck had gone on fire and nobody could go anywhere for eight hours. My sister in law said; “See, God knew what He was doing. If you had gone you would have either been in the accident or stuck in the middle of nowhere for eight hours. No food. No water. No washrooms. That‟s why things worked out the way they did. The accident happened at the time we would have been leaving Fort Mac Murray. We would not even have been able to turn around and go back to my niece‟s house be-cause she was flying to Grand Prairie that morning. There really is a reason for everything. God takes care of it all. He knows what we should do and what we shouldn‟t do. Some-times He doesn‟t let us have what we want

for our own good.

Andy’s Answer to Prayer By Helen MacDonald

When they call on me, I will answer

I will be with them in trouble I will rescue and honour them.

Psalms 91: 15 & 16 Andy‟s heart was heavier than his news-paper bag as he delivered the Daily News. The heat and humidity were giving him a headache but mostly he felt sick in his stomach because of what his parents had told him last night. Mom and Dad told Andy that their car needed new brakes and some other re-pairs. Because Dad had been out of work for six months, they could not afford to fix the car and also buy new clothes, shoes and school supplies for the new school year. They asked Andy if he would use the money he had been saving for a new bike to buy what he needed for school. Dad promised he would buy Andy the bike as soon as he found work. Andy had been saving hard for the silver gray 10 speed he‟d seen in Mr. Bell‟s Bike Shop. He imagined giving Mr. Bell the money and proudly wheeling the bike out, strapping on his helmet and riding home. But, now his dreams of owning the bike, riding it to deliver papers and biking to school…it was broken into a thousand pieces. In Andy‟s mind, yesterday was the worst day of his ten year old life.

As Andy trudged along delivering the pa-pers, he thought that maybe he should talk to God about this. His parents had taught him to pray and he prayed with them and at Sunday School. So even though he did not feel at all like praying, Andy began to ask God to help his dad find a job. Andy knew his father did not like being out of work. “Please God, help my dad, not just because I want my bike, but „cause he really needs a job. I hear Mom and Dad talking and they‟re worried about the bills.” Andy had only one more paper to deliver. He smiled a little as he walked up to Mrs. MacDonald‟s big old house. The house was way too big for one little old lady and her big friendly cat. Mrs. MacDonald al-ways invited him in for a glass of lemon-ade and homemade chocolate chip cook-ies. He was sure that she made them every Saturday just for him, when he came to collect the paper money and the tip she always gave him. Andy walked up the path and knocked on the worn out old front door with the peeling green paint. He thought the whole house and yard really needed to get fixed up. Mrs. MacDonald greeted Andy with a cheerful “Hello Andy. Come in.” She was wearing a bright red sweater, purple pants and fluffy pink slippers that looked too big for her feet. “You look as though you need some refreshment, my boy. Are you tired from this heat after delivering all the pa-pers? I would think you are ready for a rest.” Mrs. MacDonald ushered Andy into her living room and told him to sit down

while she got him a drink and cookies. Andy thanked her as he plopped himself into a cozy overstuffed orangey brown chair. The room smelled like old books. Paintings of ancient people hung on the faded yellow walls. Andy felt as sad as they looked and for a moment, he wished he could climb into one of the pictures and join the grim looking people forever and never have to face another miserable day like today. Mrs. MacDonald came back into the room, interrupting his thoughts. “My goodness, Andy. You look so sad. Can I help you with anything?” she asked kindly. Andy was tempted to blurt out the whole story about his Dad and the bike. Instead, he fought back the tears, shrugged his shoulders and said, “I guess I‟m just not feeling good today, thank you Mrs. Mac-Donald.” Mrs. MacDonald patted his shoulder. “Well, you enjoy your cold drink and cookies. Perhaps then you‟ll feel bet-ter.” she said, placing the tray on a little table beside Andy. “I need to make a phone call, so I‟ll be a few minutes. Then I will be back to pay you.” Andy took the glass and as he was drink-ing the sweet, tangy lemonade, Jepson, Mrs. MacDonald‟s big furry brown and white cat jumped onto his lap. Jepson purred, rubbing his head against Andy‟s chin. Andy laughed, “You are going to make me spill my drink, silly cat.” Jepson loved to be petted and Andy loved Jep-son. The cat settled down on Andy‟s lap and purred loudly. As Andy petted

Page 10: Fall 2010 Volumn 4 Number 3

10

Jepson, the tears began to fall. “Oh Jeppy” he sobbed. “It‟s not fair. How could they ask me to use my bike money for school stuff?” The big friendly cat seemed to understand and nuzzled his head against Andy‟s hand. Mrs. MacDonald was about to enter the room but stopped at the door as she heard Andy sobbing, telling her beloved cat all his troubles. She knew that Andy‟s father had lost his job when the company he had worked for had gone out of busi-ness. She was surprised that he was still out of work. She entered the room cough-ing a little to give Andy time to compose himself. “There now, I see Jepson has found him-self a comfortable place to sleep. I do hope he hasn‟t bothered you too much, Andy.” “Oh no, Mrs. MacDonald, I love him” Andy said, pressing his face into the soft fur, “he‟s wonderful!” “Well, yes, he is quite wonderful. He is a grand friend to me. Now, here is your pa-per money and your tip.” Mrs. MacDonald held out the ten dollar bill to Andy. She always gave him $10 every week, which had gone a long way towards his bike sav-ings. As she smiled at him, Andy sud-denly realized that she reminded him of his Grandma Jean. It had been a long time since he‟d seen her. Mrs. Mac-Donald had become like a grandmother to him and she had been a school teacher, too. He remembered her telling him after

she retired, she had returned to her family home where she had been born. As Mrs. MacDonald walked Andy to the door, she said “Andy, this poor old house is falling apart. I‟ve been thinking about calling your dad to see if he has any time to spare to help me fix this place up.” “Really?” said Andy. “You were thinking about hiring my Dad?” “What do you think, Andy? Would he have some time?” “Yes, Mrs. MacDonald, I think he would.” he answered, nodding his head at the same time. Andy couldn‟t believe it. His heart was now filled with hope. He left Mrs. Mac-Donald‟s home far happier than when he had entered it, about forty-five minutes earlier. “Thank you, God. Thank you, God.” he spoke out loud, not caring if any-one heard, as he walked home. His heart was now as light as the empty news-paper bag. When he got home, he heard his Dad talk-ing on the phone. He stopped, his heart pounding in his little chest. “Yes, Mrs. MacDonald, I‟ll be there at 9am Monday morning. Of course I have all the neces-sary equipment to get the job done. Thank you. See you then.” As his Dad hung up the phone, he saw Andy and said “Well, that was an answer to a prayer, son. Mrs. MacDonald wants me to work for her. She needs work done on the

Page 11: Fall 2010 Volumn 4 Number 3

11

inside and the outside of her house and the yard also needs a lot of work. She is going to pay me before I start as she thinks we could use the money now. You didn‟t say anything to her about not having the money for your bike, did you?” His Dad looked quizzically at Andy. “No way, Dad. I didn‟t mention it. I was praying for a job for you as I delivered the papers.” “Well, praise God, Andy. He does answer prayers! Now, how about we take your savings out of the bank next week and get that bike from Mr. Bell‟s shop.” Andy was so happy, he thought he would burst .

Together By Daverro Smith

"They devoted themselves to the apostles'

teaching and to the fellowship, to the

breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone

was filled with awe, and many wonders

and miraculous signs were done by the

apostles. All the believers were together

and had everything in common. Selling

their possessions and goods, they gave to

anyone as he had need. 46

Every day they

continued to meet together in the temple

courts. They broke bread in their homes

and ate together with glad and sincere

hearts, praising God and enjoying the fa-

vour of all the people. And the Lord added

to their number daily those who were be-

ing saved." Acts 2:42-47 (New Interna-

tional Version)

Wow...What a chur-ch! These people

were devoted to God. They believed in the

work God was doing through them. They

had trust. Verse 47 says that they were

praising God and enjoying the favour of all

the people. Can you believe this? What a

relationship they had with each other. It's

beautiful! They were all together in unity.

I believe we must learn to be together as a body. Have you ever heard the saying, "I only have one body, so I have to take care of it"? Well we only have one spiritual body (Romans 12:3-5) and we have to learn to appreciate it. Lets learn to love

Kingdom Ambassadors one another (1 John 4:7-10), practice

love, practice doing good things to each

other (Hebrews 10:25) and learn to enjoy

each other. After all, you only have one

body. I believe there is a wonderful bless-

ing when we catch on to this revelation.

Psalm 133:1-2 says, "How good and

pleasant it is when brothers live together

in unity! It is like precious oil poured on

the head, running down on the

beard, running down on Aaron's beard,

down upon the collar of his robes." It is

good and pleasant!

We must resist the temptation to stay

away from the family of God; especially

our immediate family (Hebrews 10:25).

Many people are falling into this tempta-

tion and therefore are missing an impor-

tant ingredient. They be-

come malnourished Christians, thinking

they are strong but they are weak. You

would make an easy target for the devil if

you separate yourself from God's will in

this manner. We need each other. We

cannot fulfill the will of God for our life on

our own. Selfishness is about one per-

son, selflessness is about all.

I encourage you to pray and ask Jesus to ignite the passion for his beautiful body. If you are one who has wandered away or separated yourself from the body, I ask that you would change your direction, change the way you think and regain fellowship with his wonderful Bride.

The Power of Words We are going to kick of this new segment with a simple song. One that many chil-dren have learned in Sunday school, kids church clubs or summer bible camps. It is called: Pass It On. Even if the words do not bring the tune to mind they are won-derful words. This song always makes me smile. It reminds me that what we care about, we talk about. And when we have something good and special: we want to share it.

It only takes a spark, to set a fire going And soon all those around can warm up

in its glowing

(chorus) That’s how it is with Gods love once

you’ve experienced it You spread his love to everyone, you

want to pass it on

What a wondrous time is spring when all the trees are budding

The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming

(chorus)

That’s how it is with Gods love once you’ve experienced it

You spread his love to everyone, you want to pass it on

I wish for you my friend the happiness

that I’ve found

You can depend on him it matters not where you’re bound

I’ll shout it from the mountaintop I want the world to know

The Lord of love has come to me I want to pass it on

Do you know the Lord of love? If you do, pass it on….

Halloween

FACT: It all started a very long time ago

All saints day, still honored today by many Christians, commemorates believ-ers who have died. The night before this day, in which Christians held vigil, became known as “All Hallow‟s Eve,” or Halloween, as it is better known to-day. Because of its association with the Druids of the time, this day was aban-doned by the church and denounced as witchcraft.

FACT: Customs do change

A tradition from the British Isles arrived much later, with people dressing in cos-

BY THE WAY...

tume and going door-to-door while put-ting on a basic drama or musical per-formance in exchange for food and drink. "Trick-or treating" as we know it today was brought to North America in the nineteenth century by Irish and Scotch immigrants. It began as a night for mis-chief and pranks, but by the 1920's ef-forts were made to counteract the van-dalism that was being caused. Commu-nity organizations began to organize safe and fun alternatives by allowing children to receive treats from residents of the neighbourhood.

Fact: Evil is real

Today in North America, Halloween has been widely associated with the occult and a preoccupation with the dead. Scripture warns that such a focus on dark forces is not to be enter-tained. In the Bible we see that Satan is not a joke to be taken lightly. He is real. John 10:9-11 says, "the thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."!

Fact: God Loves you…He really does!

God loves you with such a tremendous love that He sent His son, Jesus to earth to make atonement for your sin. Through his death he overcame the powers of darkness and offers us freedom from sin and death. The Bible says in John 3:16 that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son [to die] so that who-

ever believes in him will not parish but have everlasting life. Satan was de-feated when Jesus died on a cross for our sin. Today, you can receive his for-giveness and grace for yourself, knowing that he paid the ultimate price for you.

A Summery of Dan Southern's article, Hallow-

een: Separating Fact from Folklore

Do the Right Thing by M.J. Franci

I was thinking about a story I had written several years ago for a children‟s litera-ture course. I was thinking I would like to revamp it to include a few scripture verses that would be easy for young chil-dren to understand… „The Golden Rule‟ for example. I pondered the discussion Papa was having with Brady to include something like: “Well now my boy, you‟ve seen Little Bear on TV…” to which a very indignant Brady would reply (because he is very grown up you know) “Papa! I‟m too big for those shows! The girls watch „em, not me!” Papa with his years of wis-dom would place his work worn hands on Brady‟s shoulders, stoop down to his height and look directly into Brady‟s eyes (because Papa always does this with very important matters) and say gently, “Brady, you are never too old to be re-minded to do the right thing.” The right thing: To show love. To respect others and their property. To be honest

Page 15: Fall 2010 Volumn 4 Number 3

15

and always tell the truth. To think and use wisdom in all matters. To be hum-ble, aware of ones own shortcomings and not bragging up ones achieve-ments. To have the courage to uphold these ideals even in the face of opposi-tion… As I was pondering I remembered when my oldest child was about ten. She had been watching the original „Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory‟ and com-mented on the “hidden messages” (ie: greed, disobedience and disrespect). Much of today‟s programming depicts violence, insolence and sarcasm. How-ever, many adults are still trying to instill manners, consideration, respect and discipline in children. There are those who will take the time to view and dis-cuss with youngsters, what they are watching and ask them what is good and acceptable behavior and what do they think is “bad” and why. Kids are surprisingly good at recognizing what is unacceptable, even though they may act that way at times. Unfortunately, there are also those who watch programs with kids… laugh at the disrespect and exhibit bad behavior themselves. Kids will copy what they see. They will learn what they live. There will always be a tug of war be-tween right and wrong, between good and evil. As adults we are role models. The question is… What are we model-ing? Are we exhibiting a „Do as I Say, Not as I Do‟ example? Or are we

leading and teaching what is right by our example?

Recently a friend of my oldest daughter, and the mother of two little girls, was relating an experience she had with them and what she had said to the old-est. “… I know you don‟t want to do it, but you need to think about doing the right thing…” The majority of kids are taught (from an early age) right from wrong. Sure they are going to test us, but that is exactly what they are doing… testing! Kids want boundaries even though most won‟t admit it. And kids of all ages will push us and push us to see if we care enough to take a stand and not be moved by their pleas or backtalk. Many parents today are tired and stressed to the max. Jesus said [Matt 11:28 ] “Come unto me all ye who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest…” He will also give you every-thing you need to be a loving, nurturing and wise parent. But you have to come to him. It‟s the right thing to do. For you and for them. May we all do the right thing….

THE 3 STEPS TO RECEIVING

JESUS CHRIST

REPENT

“Unless you repent [turn from self-will to God’s will, you too will perish” (Luke 13:3). Repentance

means a willingness to turn from your own ways, your self-will, and follow God’s ways.

BELIEVE

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children

of God” (John 1:2). The word believe literally means “to rest upon” or “to take completely at His

word.”

RECEIVE

Christ said, “here I am! I stand at the door [of your life] and knock. If anyone hears my voice and

opens the door, I will come and eat [fellowship] with him, and he with me” (Rev. 3:20).

PRAYER

Heavenly Father: I come to you in prayer asking for the forgiveness of my Sins. I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the Cross at Cal-vary that I might be forgiven and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Father, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and I ask you right now to come in to my life and be my personal Lord and Saviour. I repent of my Sins and will Worship you all the day's of my Life!. Because your word is truth, I confess with my mouth that I am Born Again and Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus! In Jesus Name, Amen.
