Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of the College:
The Bulletin is dedicated to our alumni, an increasingly professionally diverse community
of graduates. Did you know that only slightly more than 50% of our students and new
alumni are either enrolled in, or graduated from, pharmacy-related academic programs?
Our cover story about Patricia Groom mPaS ’03, a graduate of our Physician assistant
Studies program who credits much of her professional advancement to mcPHS, serves
as a stirring reminder of our evolving health sciences curriculum.
We cover ground in this Bulletin, including recent commencement exercises. We
celebrated the largest graduation classes in our history, a reflection of our growing health
sciences academic programs. you will also learn about the dedication of the alumni
courtyard at our manchester, New Hampshire campus. The new courtyard, funded by
alumni and friends, is a peaceful oasis on the bustling manchester campus. meanwhile,
our second fundraising golf tournament of the year, the mcPHS Worcester/boston
tournament, attracted a capacity field of golfers and significant roster of sponsors.
as promised, we have opened the new mcPHS center for Professional career Develop-
ment. initially, the cPcD will just support students on all three campuses. However, in
the near future cPcD will expand its focus to support alumni career development.
if you have visited our three campuses, you will recognize the name “brant,” a name
synonymous with generosity and support for key student facilities. Joseph and Frances
brant have made an indelible positive impact. With great sadness i report the death of
good friend Frances brant, devoted wife of Joseph brant bSP ’51. Frances passed away
on June 26, in Stuart Florida where she had been a resident for the past several years.
i hope that you find this Bulletin informative and interesting. Please visit www.mcphs.
edu to find more in depth coverage of our events, profiles about our diverse alumni and
news to keep you connected with our college community.
Sincerely,
charles F. monahan Jr. ’62

Did you know that The Bulletin just turned
one hundred years old?
That’s a lot of history, a wealth of news and,
just as notably, tons of paper.
Can we do better?
This scaled down version of the traditional
print Bulletin, combined with its unlimited-
in-size online companion, the e-Bulletin,
makes great sense in a world when
technological amelioration can effectively
address environmental degradation.
If you would prefer to read only the
e-Bulletin, link to us online and let us know.
Twice a year we will email The Bulletin.
You win and, just as importantly, the
environment wins for at least another
hundred years.

Patricia a. Groom led a life that many would envy: a loving husband, a house in the suburbs, multiple college
degrees and a great job in the financial services industry. So why has she worked for the past eight years as an
emergency department physician assistant? The answer to that question is simple. Pat Groom follows her heart.
Patricia a. Groom mPaS’03, Pa-c changed her career trajectory in a way about which most people only dream.
born in the bronx and raised on Long island, Groom graduated from molloy college in rockville center, N.y. with a
bachelor’s degree in biology. “in 1968, if you were a woman, you went on to be a teacher, a nurse or a secretary,” she says.
She entered the teaching profession and soon received her mS in Library Science even though she still harbored dreams of
another career as a physician assistant. However, her plans to enroll in a physician assistant studies program in New york were
shelved when her husband Harry accepted a job offer in boston.
Patricia GroomFollowinG Her HeArt
8 Massachusetts college of PharMacy and health sciences | Bulletin fall 2011
after moving to boston, Groom
entered Simmons college School of
management, from which she earned
her master’s degree in business
administration. She landed positions
with american express, baybank and
Fidelity investments. yet, she still felt
the relentless pull of her twin passions
for science and teaching leading her
in another direction. With both of her
daughters in college, Groom worked
as a medical assistant in an internal
medicine medical practice. “i loved
the encounters with patients,” she
recalls, and before long she felt ready
to enroll in a physician assistant studies
program. The enthusiasm displayed
by her daughter’s friends at their own
college graduation celebration, she
says, “inspired me. i said to myself ‘this
is something i should really go for.’”
as she worked her way toward fulfilling
the master in Physician assistant Studies
degree requirements at mcPHS, Groom
assumed that she would work in internal
medicine as a newly minted physician
assistant. Her emergency medicine
clinical rotation changed all that. She
remembers, “i loved the full diversity
of the medicine,” she says. “it was the
full range of people that were very sick,
and i ended up seeing the same people
several times to work on those chronic
conditions.”
Now in her eighth year as an emergency
department physician assistant at
Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton,
mass., Pat Groom is unambiguous in
appraising her profession. “i continue
to see the Pa profession growing by
leaps and bounds,” she says. “With
the growing need to take care of a
rapidly aging population, it’s going to
mushroom immensely.”
at the same time as she sought a
full-time position following mcPHS
graduation, Pat Groom found that a
chance opening for an adjunct faculty
led her right back to mcPHS. “i realized
i wanted to become more involved with
the school,” she says, as she has gone
on to serve as a preceptor, do visiting
lectures and speak with accepted
students.
Pat Groom has never been far from the
college. “every time the development
office would call our house, my husband
would say, ‘Look what that school did for
you. you have to give back.” Groom’s
husband, who passed away in the spring
of 2010, was her biggest supporter.
“Harry was the one who pushed me
along and made me believe i could do
anything.”
These and other fond memories spurred
Groom to make gifts to the annual
Fund and to establish endowed and
restricted scholarship funds. “everyone
has financial demands, but even the
habit of giving a small gift on a regular
basis means the world,” Groom says. in
acknowledgement of her generosity, the
155-seat amphitheater in the 10 Lincoln
Square academic and Student center
at the mcPHS-Worcester campus was
dedicated on June 27 in her husband’s
memory, with dozens of family members
and friends on hand.
although the amphitheater and
scholarship gifts will be used by
generations of Pa students, Patricia
Groom acknowledges that giving back
can assume many forms. “if you can’t
contribute financially, you can come
back to the college to speak to classes,
conduct workshops. There are so many
ways to stay involved.” and, if there’s
one thing to say about Patricia Groom,
it’s that she stays involved, especially
when she follows her heart.
“If you can’t contribute financially, you can come back to the College to speak to classes, conduct workshops. There are so many ways to stay involved.”
