During the past academic year, Honors students earned high commendations on their many fine accomplishments, both academic and otherwise; included in this newsletter are some updates on their notable achievements. Of note is our continued participation in the National Collegiate Honors Council conference. Two students presented their work in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2011, and faculty from other institutions continue to be very impressed with the caliber of Emerson’s Honors Program student presentations. In the fall of 2012, seven more Honors Program students, Elizabeth Cortright, Samantha Howell, Rebecca Isenhart, Robert Onorato, Brittney Oswald, Megan Seabaugh, and Emma-Jean Weinstein will present at the conference in Boston. Please join me in congratulating all of the members of the Honors Program learning community on their excellent, high-caliber work as well as their ongoing scholarship, and welcoming the incoming class. Congratulations to the 40 students who graduated from the Honors Program and commenced in May with the Class of 2012. During the past academic year, Honors students earned high commendations on their many fine accomplishments, both academic and otherwise; included in this newsletter are some updates on their notable achievements. Ross Perlin, the author of Intern Nation: How to Earn Nothing and Learn Little in the Brave Economy, will join us on campus as the Honors Program guest lecturer this fall. He has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian (UK), and other publications on labor, politics, and cultural and linguistic extinction. Perlin has worked in remote areas of southwest China, at a Silicon Valley start-up, and at the world’s oldest Yiddish theater. He was a Marshall Scholar at Cambridge University and the School of Oriental and African Studies, where he earned master’s degrees, and he received a BA from Stanford University. NCHC ConferenceThis year, Emerson College has seven exemplary Honors Program juniors presenting their work on separate Student Interdisciplinary Research Panels at this year’s National Collegiate Honors Council’s annual conference. The conference will be held in Boston November 14–18.

Elizabeth Cortright is a Writing, Literature and Publishing major and her paper is titled “By Any Other Name: The Politics of Popular Fiction in Translation.”

Samantha Howell is a Broadcast Journalism major and her paper is titled “Vietnam War Protests: How Declined Censorship and Increased Television Broadcasting Played a Part.”

Rebecca Isenhart is a Journalism major and her paper is titled “American Education: A Work in Progress.”

Robert Onorato is a Theatre Studies major and his paper is titled “That’s Not Purple, Mary, That Color Up There Is Mauve: AIDS and the Evolution of Fabulous Theater.”

Brittney Oswald is a Communication Studies major and her paper is titled “The Sexuality of the Unicorn.”

Megan Seabaugh is a Writing, Literature and Publishing major and her paper is titled “A Penny for Your Thoughts: E-Book Piracy and the Value of Ideas.”

Emma-Jean Weinstein is a Writing for Film and Television major and her paper is titled “African Women of the 21st Century: Educational Opportunities Begetting Environmental Sustainability.”

The Honors Program congratulates this year’s NCHC students on the honor and recognition. Their work was selected from a large pool of submissions for the Student Interdisciplinary Research Panel presentations.

We are excited to welcome 48 incoming first-year students and 8 rising sophomores to the Honors Program this fall. These students come from 24 different states across the country. Honors Program faculty and staff welcomed these outstanding students to campus during Orientation weekend at the end of August.
