FALL 2013 | ISSUE THIRTY-THREE editorial | JEFFREY SAYS At a recent BDDS board meeting, one of the members said offhandedly, “What are you going to call the 23rd season? Something crazy like ‘23 Skiddoo’?” Stephanie and I looked at each other, grins spreading across our faces. Perfection, dropped conveniently in our laps. “23 Skiddoo,” if you’re not familiar with the expression, is American slang from the early 20th century. It refers to leaving quickly or taking advantage of an opportunity to leave. There are a lot of other great expressions having to do with leaving quickly, and Stephanie and I had fun finding musical connections for them—sometimes obvious, sometimes oblique—as we planned next season’s programs. All that musical leave-taking led me to think about leave-takings in my own life, in particular my decision to skedaddle out of Madison in 1998. In the spirit of this year’s theme, here’s my story. Buried in these paragraphs you’ll find EVERY ONE of the concert titles for the upcoming season. When I moved from Madison to San Francisco, it seemed like the right time to take a hike, to get out while the getting was good. Stephanie, though, was concerned it was a case of cut and run: I was working on my doctorate at UW- Madison, and she worried that I wouldn’t finish it if I hightailed it out of town. But I did in fact have an exit strategy. In Madison, I was involved with two wonderful musical endeavors, BDDS and Opera for the Young (OFY), but they weren’t quite enough for me financially or professionally. While maintaining those ties, in San Francisco I’d have access to a larger and more varied musical environment and more opportunities to choose gigs that were a good fit . Happily, California has been a great place for me. I’ve worked with many incredible musicians, some of whom I’ve managed to get to BDDS a time or two. I started the San Francisco Piano Trio and developed connections with a number of other chamber music festivals. I’ve always enjoyed teaching, and after completing my doctorate, I quickly found teaching jobs at UC Berkeley and Cal State East Bay. Still, BDDS and OFY continued to be the most satisfying projects of my career. Last December, after 17 rewarding years as music director OFY, I felt it was the right time for me to getta move on and make room for some young ambitious musician to take my place. As for BDDS, Stephanie and I truly feel that each festival is more thrilling than the last. Far from giving Madison the 23 Skiddoo, at the end of every season I say “Hasta pronto, baby,” happy that the “hasta” is just a few short months away. At a recent BDDS board meeting, one of the members said offhandedly, “What are you going to call the 23rd season?

Stephanie, though, was concerned it was a case of cut and run: I was working on my doctorate at UW-Madison, and she worried that I wouldn’t finish it if I hightailed it out of town.

Last December, after 17 rewarding years as music director OFY, I felt it was the

right time for me to getta move on and make room for some young ambitious musician to take my place.

As for BDDS, Stephanie and I truly feel that each festival is more thrilling than the last. Far from giving Madison the 23 Skiddoo, at the end of every season I say “Hasta pronto, baby,” happy that the “hasta” is just a few short months away.

Dressed in “flaming cello” logo t-shirts and jeans, BDDS musicians presented an interactive program for families on Saturday afternoon, June 15th. Stephanie, Jeffrey, and their artist friends demonstrated how music can morph into a different tempo, tone, or mood. To help illustrate the idea of variations, two of BDDS’s youngest fans donned costumes and transformed themselves into different characters. Visuals also included cartoon images of J.S. Bach portrayed in different moods and with different backgrounds.

Grandchildren and grandparents alike got into the spirit of the event, and there was lots of interaction with the musicians throughout the concert.

A heartfelt thank-you to CUnA Mutual Group; Murphy desmond, SC, Lawyers; pat powers and tom Wolfe; the overture Foundation; Capitol Lakes; Middleton Glen; Madison Arts Commission; dane County Cultural Affairs Commission; the Evjue Foundation; and the Wisconsin Arts Board. Without these individuals and organizations, our free concerts would not be possible.

Our annual tradition of free performances on the road continued at Capitol Lakes and Middleton Glen retirement communities. For over 20 years, BDDS has performed for gracious and attentive outreach audiences. All told there were more than 150 residents, friends, and family who attended our performances last summer. After the concert, residents and the performers mingled and chatted about all things musical. We will be back!
