Speed of communication and coordination of

information are the hallmarks of electronic

health records (EHRs), which are confidential

and secure. But Bonnie Ganim, director of

nursing, emphasizes that the real benefit of

EHRs lies in how they improve patient care.

“Implementing MatrixCare will mean that

clinical staff will have all the information they

need instantly at their fingertips,” she says, and

notes some of the advantages of EHRs:

• Medication prescribing and management are improved, with no concerns about handwriting legibility, andorders entered in real time and automatically faxed tothe pharmacy. Resident formulary checks help ensurereimbursement, safety alerts are embedded in the EHR,and all of a patient’s medical providers will have directaccess to medication records.

Mary held high level-administrative jobs — includingworking at IBM, where she met her husband, Bill; theyhave a son and two grandchildren. Connie taught firstand second grade in Catholic schools in Massachusettsand Connecticut for 14 years, obtained a master’sdegree, then left the convent and became director ofthe early childhood education program at HolyokeCommunity College, a position she held for 25 years.

After they retired in the early 1990s, Mary and Billmoved to Newport, Rhode Island, where they enjoyedlife on and near the water. But when Bill’s health beganto fail, they moved to Wethersfield to be close to theirson Kipp and his family. When Bill needed a higherlevel of care, the family chose Avery’s healthcare facility.Mary came to live at The Heights shortly thereafter; shehas been here for two years. “When I moved here,”Mary says, “I kept calling Connie and telling her, ‘Thisis a wonderful place.’”

Connie didn’t need much persuading to join herfriend at The Heights. “Actually, I had decided to come

here even before I moved to Wethersfield in 2007 to benear relatives,” she says. “But I wasn’t quite readythen.” A few months ago, Connie made the move.

Now, the friends are rediscovering old interests andfinding new ones. Both music and theater lovers, theyattend concerts and performances on and off campus, and are especially thrilled with the monthly broadcastsof full-length operas. Connie, who had never paintedbefore, recently completed her first oil painting. Whennot spending time with her husband, Mary is involvedwith the knitting club, helps organize the Ladies’ Tea,and has volunteered in other activities. Both welcomevisitors to the open houses, attend lectures, and use thelibrary and the exercise facilities regularly.

“There’s so much you can get involved with,” Marysays. She is particularly grateful for the excellent careBill gets — she calls the people who work in thehealthcare facility “angels.” Connie adds, “I can hardlywait until the next day to see what’s going to happen.Life couldn’t be any better.”

Fox in the 1950s. Presented by ElizabethAbbey of the Connecticut HistoricalSociety, the program focused on theheyday of Hartford’s landmark

December 8 – December 129:00 am – 5:00 pm

On Thursday, December 11, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm, the festival will offer refreshments and entertainment. All are welcome.

Families, staff, and friends are invited to decorate small artificial trees, wreaths, or other holiday items for donation to the Center for the week-long display. To donate a decorated tree or other item to this event, orfor more information, contact Liz Kilroy at 860-527-9126 x. 372.

• Residents’ medical histories are all documented in MatrixCare, providing the clinical team with a complete medical profile of each resident, andenhancing care coordination with providers bothon and off the Avery campus.

“I know that sometimes, when people think oftechnology, they are concerned that it can make careimpersonal,” Bonnie says. “But the opposite is true.Having someone’s medical history readily available, constantly updated, all in one place, not only improvesquality of care, but allows for clearer communicationwith residents and their families.”

Kelsy Gati, a classically trained vocalist and a boardcertified music therapist, has been deeply involved withmusic and the performing arts since high school.Knowing that she wanted both to maintain music inher life and do work that would support her love ofconnecting to others, she chose music therapy as hercollege major.

Connecting with musicResidents are benefiting from increased programming

made possible by the addition of a new music therapist

to the Therapeutic Recreation Department.

Currently, Kelsy works primarily on station 2.While each of the four groups she conducts daily willhave a specific focus — for instance, movement-basedactivity, puzzling, arts and crafts, reading aloud, educational programs — music is always present.“Whether the music is in the background or the mainactivity I try and incorporate it in everything I do,” shesays. “Music has amazing powers. It can help us tofocus and make us calm, or excite and energize us, orhelp us relax, or move us to laugh, cry, and remember.”

Kelsy notes that those she works with most closelyhave trouble remembering. “But,” she says, “if youshare with them the right song, they will conjurememories and thoughts that help you to see the layersof their intellects, the wisdom of their years, thestrength of their opinions, and the love they haveexperienced.”

Whether she is leading groups or working withindividuals, Kelsy says, “The purpose of my work is tomake connections with residents and help them makeconnections with each other — and to help everyonefeel connected, validated, and important.”

Dear friends and families,For nearly 60 years, Avery Heights has set the

standard for high quality residential living and healthcare services for older men and women of allbackgrounds, faiths, and races throughout the greaterHartford area. During that time, the changing needs ofour diverse resident and client population havedemanded constant response. Ever since our foundingin 1957, we have taken great pride in our ability tounderstand the needs of those we serve, and to meetthose needs through innovative programming andresponsive facility development.

Through these decades, one remarkable constanthas sustained this work: your unwavering financialsupport. Quite simply, Avery Heights could not fulfillits mission without you. And it is time once again toask for your help.

Van transportation services have long played animportant role in allowing our residents to liveindependently — to shop at area stores, to keepmedical appointments, and to attend the wealth ofavailable off-campus recreational and educationalevents. The need for an additional modern, handicap-accessible van has become apparent; securing anothervan would allow for much better service to ourresidents through more efficient and convenienttransportation scheduling.

Your tax-deductible donation, included with theenclosed response envelope and card, will helppurchase this additional van. And, as always, your giftwill help Avery Heights continue to provide the qualityof life our residents and program participants so richlydeserve.

On behalf of our residents and staff, I thank you,as always, for your continued support. You make allthe difference.

Can you donate your old but still functioning iPod or MP3 player to Avery’s Therapeutic RecreationDepartment?

If you have heard of or seen the movie AliveInside, or are familiar with recent findings on musicand memory, this request will come as no surprise. The film documents the astonishing responses ofindividuals with dementia when they are, as Dr. Oliver Sacks says, “Awakened by music.”

For this pilot program, your donated devices will be provided to residents so they can have therevitalizing benefits of music in their own rooms.Staff will work with residents to determine musicpreferences, and load devices with selections tailoredto each individual.

To donate, call Jodi Levine at 860-527-9126, x. 445. We would also gladly accept iPads or othertablets for use with recreation groups.
