At the Y we are more than a gym. We are a cause dedicated to building strong children, families and communities – inside and out. This includes making our programs available to all regardless of need – because at the Y, everyone belongs. You can help us in the cause. Change a life by making a gift to the YMCA. Because membership dues and program fees support our daily operations, your gift will go directly to serving children and families in need.

The impact of your gift will be felt when:

• A kindergartner starts school ready to learn because he attended the Y’s early learning center.

• Kids have a safe, nurturing environment to go to after school and in the summer.

• A child learns to swim – a critical life lesson for all.

• A family is able to spend quality time together while focusing on staying active and healthy.

• A child loses weight – and enjoys it–because at the Y, exercise is play.

MAKE A GIFT. CHANGE A LIFE. Make your gift today at donate.ymcachicago.org.

SPORTS AT THE Y.Welcome to the McCormick Tribune YMCA Sports Department! There is no better place to stay active all year round than in the McCormick Tribune sports programs. Please contact our center at 773.235.2525.

Soccer Fundamentals Come out and work on those skills! We stress ball control, defense and fun.

Youth Basketball Clinic Our co-ed youth basketball clinics are great for children to learn the basics of basketball in a warm and inviting environment. A great way to introduce youth who may not previously had experience playing basketball. We focus on developing basic body control, while handling passing, introduce shooting mechanics.

Beginner Tumbling Great introduction to tumbling including flexibility, strength, balance and coordination.

DID YOU KNOW THE Y INVENTED BASKETBALL, RACQUETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL?Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1950, YMCA volunteer Joe Sobek invented racquetball in Greenwich, Connecticut, as an alternative to squash and handball. Like previous YMCA inventors, Sobek was not paid for his invention; he bestowed it as a gift to all who play the game today.

In the 1890s, YMCA instructor William Morgan thought basketball was too strenuous for businessmen, so he blended elements of basketball, tennis and handball, and called his invention “mintonette.” In 1896, at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, the name “volley ball” was first used to describe the back-and-forth manner in which the ball flew over the net. Today, more than 46 million Americans play volleyball.
