Japanese Shibori Silk Scarves“Shibori” is the Japanese resist method of creating designs on silk scarves using PVC pipes. This is a unique process of wrapping our scarves around the pipe and watch as our creativity with silk dyes takes over, spilling the color onto the pipe in layer after layer. You will also be given the opportunity to paint directly on your scarves. The science of art and the creativity of the individual unite in this workshop to produce two finished scarves that can be worn with pride or given as gifts. All participants should wear old clothes and bring an old towel to class. Knitting, Beginning Perfect for the beginning knitter! Start with how to cast on the stitches and learn basic knitting styles. End with how to bind off and change from one size needle to another. Crochet, Basics Bored with sitting idle in waiting rooms or want a hobby to take anywhere? Learn to read a pattern and you can take what you learn to crochet anywhere. This class introduces basic crochet stitches and their application. Let’s Learn to Draw! If you’ve ever caught yourself doodling, you are indeed drawing. Drawing is the oldest form of written communication and is easily a favorite leisure activity. In this class you will explore your creative side as you learn how to set up a good composition using drawing techniques such as shading, contrast, perspective, texture, etc. We’ll also be experimenting with different drawing materials so you can see which ones you like the best (or the least). Drawing still lifes and landscapes are only a small part of this class. All supplies will be provided. All you need to bring is your eagerness to learn. Come prepared to enhance your creativity and stimulate your imagination through drawing. This is a beginners class. Tin of Tags Join local Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator to create a tin full of Christmas tags. Each participant will go home with 30 completed Christmas tags (3 each of 10 designs) that are stored in a decorative tin with lid. Financial Aid Renewals The Financial Aid Renewal Workshop will provide an overview of financial basics and the completion of the Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Discussion will include a review of the Federal, State, School-based, and private funding sources, including tax credits. Upon completion of this workshop the student will be better able to effectively access the funding they need to complete their college degree. An emphasis will be placed on student responsibility and an understanding of the full financial process and timetable. Student Loan management is discussed. Essentials of College Planning This free workshop introduces people to educational opportunities in general and MEOC services in particular. This interactive workshop touches on the four steps in the college process: Admissions, financial aid, career options and study skills. Our College Transitions Program is a combination of topics intended to prepare you in a variety of areas to get ready for college, and eventually, a new career. The class includes math, English and writing, and College & Career Aspirations. You will prepare for the college entrances exams, learn about financial aid, improve your computer skills, and get answers to your questions about getting into and being successful in college. Computer Class Individual and small group instruction is available in our computer lab this Fall. University CollegeNew Fall semester begins August 29, 2016. We are pleased to offer, once again, ALL ITV and online classes through University College and the University of Maine System’s distance education program as well as onsite support for your online distance education classes. University College offers access to courses and programs from the seven universities at more than 40 locations and online. Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat with Diabetes,a mindful eating program for thriving with diabetes and prediabetes.

You can eat joyfully and mindfully while managing your diabetes. This is a series of six workshops that provide a practical mind-body approach that shifts the focus from rigid nutrition rules and strict exercise regimens to awareness of your beliefs, habits, thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. Learning to listen to and understand your “inner expert” puts you in charge of your eating and health decisions. Cooking Matters This class is to empower families who are experiencing a limited budget with the skills, knowledge and confidence to make healthy and affordable meals. Participants will learn how to select nutritious and low-cost ingredients and prepare them in ways that provide the best nourishment possible for their families. At the end of each class, you will be sent home with the ingredients for that day’s recipe to recreate the meal at home. Buying Meat from Local FarmersBuying meat directly from local farmers is a way to support the local agriculture community, but it can be confusing says Donna Coffin, Extension Professor. At this program, you will learn about the different words used to describe how animals are raised and how meat is sold from local farms - natural grass-fed, organic, dry-aged, pasture raised, free raised, free range, humane andprime. Grow Your Own Organic Garden Are you concerned about the rising cost of food? Unsure what the term “certified organic” means? Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for a workshop on how to grow your own organic garden. We’ll talk about the basics of soil science, how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation, and how to incorporate green manures and manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics will include how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies and common insects, pests and methods of natural insect control. How to Get Started in Game DevelopmentThere’s never been a better time to start a career in the game development industry. Games can be found on computers, the Web, gaming consoles, and virtually every mobile table and phone. Whether you want to start your own indie game project in your basement or work with a small creative team or for a large game development studio, this course will prepare you to start developing your own games. You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of game development and get an overview of game genres, platforms, and audiences. Next, you’ll learn tools and techniques to help you make better design decisions and achieve greater efficiencies as you develop yoru own games. During the course, you’ll gain hands-on experience in many of the game development processes. Boat Engine MaintenanceThe Engine Maintenance course is a (ten chapter)(ten week) course that covers regular maintenance of marine engines, troubleshooting issues with modern systems, and the basics of engine layout and operation. Gasoline inboards, outboards, and diesel engines are taught in a way that reinforces the common aspects of how engines work. The student kit consists of a book on the subject; an exam is administered at the conclusion of the course. Though we plan in great detail for so many life events, weddings, childbirth, college and retirement, rarely do we want to talk with family and friends about how we want to be cared for at the end of life. Often we wait until a crisis hits to make these decisions when decision making is the most difficult. Today, rather than looking at death as an inevitable part of life, the current culture still has a death defying attitude. But there are worse things than dying and that is dying badly. Through group discussion and sharing personal experiences this workshop will cover our views on death and dying and how those views have been influenced over the years by family, friends and current culture. We will discuss views on decision making, beginning the conversation of your final wishes with family and friends, advance directives, living wills, durable power of attorney for health care, do not resuscitate orders, organ donation, POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment), creating a circle of care, hospice and palliative care. King’s Bucksport Driving School Taught by a certified Class A driving instructor, this ten class, comprehensive program effectively prepares beginning drivers to receive their driving permit. Program includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction, as well as all class handouts, testing materials, Maine Motorist Handbook, and Course Completion Certificate. Provided that all driving hours are completed and permit test passed, permits are issued on last day of class! Most students receive their permits within 30 days. Algebra Algebra I is intended for students who need an Algebra credit for a diploma or college requirement. Students enrolled in our Adult Diploma program can take it for free. It can also be taken as a non-credit course for those who need to brush up on their Algebra skills for college. Do you want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare? We train students to assist physicians by performing functions relatedto the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Registration is based on a first come-first served, PAID basis. Online registrations are accepted at www.rsu25.maineadulted.org using a credit or debit card. You can also fill out our registration from below and drop it off at our office, fax to 469-2192, or mail the form to RSU 25 Adult and Community Education, 102 Broadway, Suite One, Bucksport, ME 04416. No confirmation will be sent unless there are course changes or if you have not enrolled early enough to meet the course enrollment minimum. When pre-registering by phone, you will be put on our waiting list until payment has been received. REMEMBER, in order to secure a seat in the class, payment MUST be made at time of registration.

Fees: RSU 25 Adult and Community Education operates a variety of programs supported by federal, state, and local taxes. Some programs are self-supporting and may require higher fees as well as minimum enrollments. High School Diploma courses are free for those students whose only high school is RSU 25 Adult and Community Education.

Course Cancellations: We reserve the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment or other circumstances. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Refunds: If we cancel a class, all fees will be refunded. Unless a class has been filled, has only the minimum number necessary, or indicates otherwise, if you withdraw before the second class, all course fees will be refunded. There are no refunds for missed one night workshops.
