Heavy rhythms and saxophone.

This Scandinavian garage jazz power trio formed in 1999 as a Don Cherry recording project, and were soon established as one of the most important European jazz groups. Their wide-ranging repertoire includes material by PJ Harvey, Albert Ayler, The White Stripes, and Steve Lacy. They transform the music of such artists into a contemporary context, creating a wholly original sound.

As individuals or as The Thing, they have collaborated with Peter Brötzmann, Sonic Youth, Jim O’Rourke, Thurston Moore, David Grubbs, Eye, The Ex, Pat Metheny, Arto Lindsay, Steve Reid, Neneh Cherry, and many more.

A book changed their lives.

Obsessed with the character of Holden from The Catcher in the Rye, they believe that they are him. These three fevered superfans have taken up residence in J.D. Salinger’s private writing bunker in Cornish, New Hampshire. Their mission: to get Salinger to publish once more.

But things are about to go terribly off-course.

Led by writer–director Anisa George, George & Co. creates madcap and messy, ensemble-created theater. HOLDEN performers and co-creators include Jaime Maseda, Matteo Scammel, Scott Sheppard, Bill George, Adele Goldader, and Madeline Charne.

HOLDEN is supported by a grant from the Wyncote Foundation, Amaranth Foundation, W. Beall Fowler, a residency at FringeArts, and developed, in part, at Ice Factory 2015, a program of New Ohio Theatre.

Wednesday October 28 | 8pmThursday October 29 | 8pmFriday October 30 | 8pmSaturday October 31 | 2pm**Post-show panel discussion Chopin’s Body: Chopin as Theater with Tom Sellar, Yale School of Drama; Tamara Trojanowska, University of Toronto; moderated by Allen Kuharski, Swarthmore College

A new form of musical performance!

Director Michał Zadara and actor Barbara Wysocka of CENTRALA (Warsaw, Poland) replace the piano parts of Fryderyk Chopin’s concertos in E minor and F minor with a riveting dramatic monologue. Climbing on top of the piano, Wysocka explores cultural, political, and philosophical tensions of the composer’s time that feel strikingly contemporary. Her highly physical virtuoso performance is accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and led by Warsaw National Opera’s rising young talent, conductor Bassem Akiki.

Artfully weaving together fragments of Chopin’s letters and music criticism from some of the finest writers and thinkers of our age, CHOPIN WITHOUT PIANO captures the composer as a dynamic living presence within the full force of his music. It challenges us to think more deeply about the sustaining value of Chopin’s music, the tradition of live classical performance, and culture in the broadest sense.

Sunday November 1 | 8pm

Two famous choreographers rejoice in their love for their own dancing.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Boris Charmatz reinvent their dance in the instant, and within the labyrinthine lines of Bach’s music played live by violinist Amandine Beyer. Chords strike within their bodies, the counterpoint vibrates and comes to life, bodies begin to whirl.

In her opus of over forty dances, this is the first duet De Keersmaeker has composed for herself to dance with a man. Partita 2 presents a meticulous construction that plays off the whimsical, boyish, and at times titanic improvisatory flights of Charmatz.

Age & Beauty Miguel Gutierrez

10

Part 1: Mid-Career Artist/Suicide Note or &:-/

Tuesday November 10 | 8pmWednesday November 11 | 8pm

The anxiety of being an aging gay choreographer and midcareer stress. What happens next?

Age & Beauty is a suite of queer pieces that addresses the representation of the dancer, the physical and emotional labor of performance, tropes about the aging gay choreographer, the interaction of art making with administration, the idea of queer time and futurity, and mid-life anxieties about relevance, sustainability, and artistic burnout.

Part 1 is a duet for 43-year-old Gutierrez and 24-year-old dancer Mickey Mahar and follows from a packed set of precise unison dances to an irreverent and celebratory corruption of orderliness. Hyper-emotional affect is not only the conceptual and choreographic core of the performance, but also the only hope for continuing in this fucked up world.

Friday November 13 | 8pmSaturday November 14 | 8pm

Relationships, money, and flights of fancy and being stuck in a room with people. All are at the center of all art making.

The second Age & Beauty installment features members of the choreographer’s long-term creative team: performer–choreographer Michelle Boulé, arts manager Ben Pryor, and lighting designer Lenore Doxsee. Retrospection and documents, old dances, lost ideas, e-mails, lights, secret recordings, re-arranged for a new look back, memory re-organized into mad dance.

The presentation of Age & Beauty Parts 1 & 2 was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Age & Beauty Part 2: Asian Beauty @ the Werq Meeting or The Choreographer & Her Muse or &:@& is made possible with support from the MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project with support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

“The performance is not locked or fixed or out of time. You are watching a person who has history, story, context, future. Time is embedded into the way that person moves, into what they know or have learned. None of us escapes that, whether or not we are dancing bodies.” Miguel Gutierrez, choreographer

“Mr. Gutierrez let them loose. He sang. He sang into a microphone, wearing a dress of tulle, in a kind of defiant karaoke fantasy, but more than that, he made his material sing, transmuting it into emotional expression.” Brian Seibert, The New York Times

What does it mean to be American? How do you define home? What is a citizen?

A dance company takes a look at itself and its neighbors for its next creation—informed by the stories of the diverse community along Philadelphia’s famed South 9th Street corridor, where KYL/D’s dance center—CHI Movement Arts Center—is located, and where artistic and executive directors Kun-Yang Lin and Ken Metzner reside. From the intensely personal to the universal experiences of all who call a new place home, in this multilayered, multi-textured performance, Kun Yang Lin and his dancers use their bodies to tell layered and personal stories of immigration and displacement.

Inspired by the community engagement methodologies of Cornerstone Theater Company in Los Angeles, Kun Yang Lin—himself an immigrant from Taiwan—reveals how for many individuals amongst Philadelphia neighborhoods, immigration is at the root of our identities. Original music composed by Cory Neale.

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present Adam Rudolph’s Go: Organic Guitar Orchestra.

Since the 1970s, composer and master hand drummer Adam Rudolph has been pioneering new sounds in jazz and world music for decades. Rudolph explores the musical forms, languages, instrumentation, and cosmologies of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the African Diaspora, often through large ensembles. His compositions display unusual relationships that culminate into wildly imaginative and unexpected sonic universes. Yusef Lateef, Sam Rivers, Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Foday Musa Suso and Hassan Hakmoun are a few of his many collaborators, who have informed his broad aesthetic. These extraordinary musicians, composers, and bandleaders comprise a who’s who of contemporary music—from Wilco to Cassandra Wilson to Ornette Coleman. Go: Organic Guitar Orchestra’s debut, Turning Towards the Light (Cuneiform Rune) will be released this fall.

None (rhymes with moan): The ninth hour after dawn. The end of the day’s labors. Shadows lengthen, baths are drawn. Tools are put away and the people pause, looking back in preparation for the imminent close of day.

Then somebody falls to his knees and declares to the heavens: My vocation is love! At last I have found it! I will be love itself! O luminous lighthouse of love, I know how to reach you. Love has chosen me for its holocaust; me, weak and imperfect creature. I want to suffer through love, to rejoice through love.

Abbot Adam is a cycle of shows that features Jaime Maseda and Mark McCloughan as two sister nuns steeped in Medieval traditions venturing into wildly new performance territory. Since 2007, the Philadelphia-based No Face has created shows that take many forms, from choreography to theater to installation performance. The first, Abbot Adam: Evensong, premiered at FringeArts in March 2015.
