Is there any rust around the top of your gas/oil water heater where the metal flue pipe comes out? Do you see melted stickers or pipe insula- tion? Air Cleaners: Clarifying Misconceptions

As winter approaches and our homes be-come our safe haven from the cold, we need to consider our home’s air quality. Being stuck inside can cause allergies to act up even more if the air we breathe is not free form irritants. AL-DON offers a variety of air cleaners to help purify the air and reduce allergy irritants. The basic purpose of an air cleaner is to filter out particles that cause irritation, such as pollen, spores, dust and other contaminates. Let us now examine two common misconceptions and the truth about Air Cleaners.

Misconception 1: Air cleaners will get rid of all the dust in your home.Truth: Air cleaners remove dirt and dust from the air as it passes through the air cleaner. It will remove allergy causing particles that pass through it and perform well consistent-ly, handling large volumes of air efficiently. How ever, if the dust particles are not in the air stream (ex: sitting on furniture) an air cleaner will not remove it.

Misconception 2: Standard air filters and air cleaners provide the same quality of air purification. Truth: Standard air filters are responsible for maintaining the heating and cooling equipment free from dust and other debris, not those living in the home. Air cleaners, such as the Media Air Clean-er and HEPA Air Cleaner, are high-efficiency systems and remove about 99% of allergens

and other particulates. The most effective air cleaners include the

Media Air Cleaner, HEPA, and Electronic Air Cleaner.

Understanding HumidityCold winter months bring low humidity levels that most of us only recognize as we feel our skin drying out more frequently and needing chapstick to keep our lips moist. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in the air, and it affects our comfort levels, even playing a role in the de-velopment and treatment of allergies.

Higher humidity levels can help relieve discomfort and unpleasant symptoms of allergies. On the other hand, on extremely common source of many allergies - dust mites - thrive at high humidity levels. This presents a catch-22: low-er humidity levels ensure that mold and cut mites cannot thrive and can help reduce indoor air pollution, but higher humidity is more comfortable. The ideal humidity level for our homes has been found to be between 35-45% RH (rel-ative humidity). You may wonder how you can determine the humidity level in your own home? You can purchase a Hygrometer at a local hardware store, such as Home Depot or Lowes. This device can help you determine if your home is at risk for increased mold and dust mite activity. If the hu-midity is below 35%, many people experience discomfort in the form of dry itchy skin and scratchy dry nasal passages.

If you would like to speak with someone who can help de-termine the humidity levels in your home, or present solu-tions for humidity issues you may be having, please contact our office right away. We will always be here to answer any questions you may have.
