TABLE OF CONTENTSEmerging Women Leaders,

Congratulations and thank you for making 2018 another impactful and successful year for EWL! As we approach year end, many of us use this time to focus on loved ones, friends and self-reflection. Please join us in reflecting on the many accomplishments we have collectively had as EWL members and as women.

Across the U.S. and the world, women have made history in 2018. Here in Milwaukee, EWLers are planting the seeds for what effective and responsible leadership is within our community. Listed below are just a few of the many accomplishments each of you helped make a reality this year for EWL:

` • Grew from 63 members in 2017 to 101 in 2018! • Shepherded the nominations of nearly 70 new EWL members

to join us in 2019! • Launched EWL Explores, a new series of events held within

the community hosted by the Engagement Committee. • Facilitated 36 new 1-to-1 Mentoring matches. • Formed four new EWL Connects groups – bringing the total

to nine. • Hosted the largest Annual Professional Development

Workshop to date with more than 160 attendees! • Committed to a partnership with PEARLS for Teen Girls. • Hosted the very first “Manel” or Panel of Men, featuring Kevin

Anderson (Old National Bank), Alex Beer (GMR Marketing) and Keith Stanley (Near West Side Partners).

Life brings continuous change and challenges, however each of the experiences that we bring to EWL -- in addition to what we gain from EWL -- positions us for success. On behalf of your leadership co-chairs, please accept our sincerest gratitude and give yourselves a huge pat on the back as we look forward to an even bigger and better 2019!

Sincerely,

Your EWL Leadership Co-Chairs

Women’s Affinity Alliance Event: “Inviting Confidence to the Table”

Hosted by M3 Insurance November 27th – 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Schlitz Park Auditorium; 1555 N. RiverCenter Drive.

Join us for November’s Women’s Affinity Alliance event hosted by M3 Insurance. With a recently-launched Women’s Business Resource Group, M3 will share the why, how and what of their launch story. Tackling the reality that as women, we tend to want to check all the “boxes” before taking on a new opportunity and want to know everything about everything before we speak up, this discussion will be around how to infuse confidence into professional development and take the approach of progress versus perfection.

EWL ExploresCamp Wandawega August 11

A group of Emerging Women Leaders spent a summer afternoon touring the incredibly Insta-worthy Camp Wandawega for the second installment of EWL Explores. Camp owners David and Tereasa Surratt welcomed EWL with an incredible historical overview of the camp, from its speakeasy start to its purchase by the Catholic Church, used as a retirement home to Latvian priests unable to return home due to Soviet occupation in the 60’s up until the early 2000’s when David and Tereasa purchased and began restoration. EWLers were then led on a walking tour of the grounds, including the treehouse, lodge, Hillhouse, a-frame and lake. After the tour, Tereasa sat down with the group to talk about managing a full-time Executive Creative Director career at Ogilvy, owning Camp Wandawega and being a mother to 7-year-old Charlie. Tereasa candidly spoke on overcoming workplace dissatisfaction and turning her passion into a successful business.

EWL Explores + SocialZimmerman Architectural Studios + City Lights BreweryAugust 23

Dave Stroik, President and CEO of Zimmerman Architectural Studios, opened the doors of “Milwaukee’s Coolest Office Space” to EWL for an Explores tour and social. Dave first led the group through the space’s rich history as the former home of the historic Milwaukee Gas Light Co., designed in 1902. Dave then led the walk-through tour of the space to showcase some of the most impressive aspects and details of the building, including remaining machinery from the Gas Light building. Following the tour, the group walked over to Zimmerman’s neighbor, City Lights Brewing Co., for a happy hour social.

3rd Annual Professional Development WorkshopSeptember 21

EWL hosted the third annual all-day professional development workshop in September at Mount Mary University where more than 150 women, including 65 Emerging Women Leaders, heard from keynote speaker Elizabeth Rees, participated in breakout sessions led by FOCUS Training and Wayne Breitbarth, and listened to words of wisdom from a panel of three TEMPO Milwaukee members.

The morning session, led by Elizabeth Rees, Founder of Chasing Paper, covered topics of authenticity, creativity and entrepreneurship and was followed with a fireside chat, moderated by Events Committee Co-Chair Mary Allmon.

In the afternoon, attendees split into groups for two different breakout sessions. Liz Poeschl of FOCUS Training led attendees through an exercise on building team synergy and Wayne Breitbarth took attendees through a LinkedIn training session.

The day concluded with a TEMPO Milwaukee member panel with Marybeth Cottrill (BMO Wealth Management), Gerry Howze (PEARLS for Teen Girls) and Kimberly Kane (Kane Communications Group). Emerging Women Leader Angie Emrey served as moderator, asking the women questions on defining their “why’s,” addressing negative self-perceptions and making the shift from a “doer” to a “thinker.”

Thank you to our event sponsors, the EWL Events Committee led by Co-Chairs Mary Allmon and Maggie Beckley, and everyone who attended!

“ It was really wonderful hearing Elizabeth’s journey and how she innovated a role for herself within an existing company. The Q&A session at the end was my favorite part as she shared some more relatable insights.”

“ This was my first LinkedIn-Specific session and I very much appreciated all the tips and hints on how to improve my profile and marketability.”

“ The exercise that Liz led us in was a great example of how to build team trust and how quickly it can be broken. It was also a great opportunity to get to know a few of the ladies better.”

“ So inspiring!! I appreciated that all three ladies were very accomplished and yet were incredibly real, open, humble, and supported each other. It was a wonderful example of how we as women can build each other up instead of competing with each other.”

Mystery Volunteer Bus October 6

The EWL Community Involvement Committee kicked-off a brand-new initiative this October: The Mystery Volunteer Bus! EWLers registered for a half-day of volunteer work at a surprise location. Along with a group from PEARLS for Teen Girls, volunteers boarded a bus with the location remaining a mystery, only to find out upon arrival. The mystery destination: The Women’s Center of Waukesha. The Women’s Center serves women, children and men who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse, including trafficking. The shelter provides free services including domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse counseling, an emergency domestic violence shelter, a 24-hour hotline, free on-site child care, legal advocacy, transitional living and life skills programming. EWLers were joined by a group from PEARLS for Teen Girls in cleaning, organizing and painting areas of the shelter and a transitional living home.

13th Annual Leadership Event

On October 11, Jenny Fleiss spoke to a record-breaking crowd of more than 650 Milwaukee leaders on the journey of an entrepreneur. As co-founder of Rent the Runway and most recently co-founder and CEO of personalized, one-to-one shopping experience Jetblack, Jenny spoke on her personal journey to success. From her humble beginnings to her wildly successful launch of a second business, Jenny’s path proved to be anything but linear. Jenny left attendees with the inspiration to “Spark the Innovator” within themselves through her experience in the world of ideation and disruption.

In celebrating female entrepreneurs, a dozen local women led businesses joined in on the event through the first ever Female Entrepreneurs Marketplace. With everything from dog treats and footwear to mobile apps and creative spaces, these businesses represented just a portion of the incredible disruption and innovation happening right here in Milwaukee. EWL’s very own Aliah Berman participated in the Marketplace with her company, CAM Collective, an image consulting and career navigation service for women.

Special thanks to all our sponsors and attendees for making this a record-breaking Leadership Event and supporting TEMPO Milwaukee’s mission.

November Program Meeting Purposeful Hustle led by Deanna Singh November 7

One of the common drivers among EWL members is finding ways to harness skills, talents and resources to make a greater impact within personal lives, professional careers and community commitments. Deanna Singh, author, business owner, entrepreneur, wife and mom (the list goes on) has mastered this art of “purposeful hustle.” Deanna shared with EWLers and guests her personal journey of hopping on the many different “trains” within her own life and navigating the various roadmaps. Proving some tips and tricks featured within her new book, Purposeful Hustle, Deanna addressed the question of “why?” by finding purpose and incorporating hustle. Deanna served as an inspiration for attendees to “move from that dream space to an initiation stage.”

Communications – Audra Jacobs, Capture Marketing “I’ve enjoyed being part of the communications team because our collaboration on how to best position EWL and communicate with members has helped me make new relationships and hear new ideas and gives me a way to help advance an organization that I know is valuable to professional women! Working on the communications committee is fun and rewarding!”

Events – Megan Carver, Marquette University “Participation in the EWL Events Committee has provided great opportunities for networking and growth, both personally and professionally. Meeting regularly with this group of likeminded, professional, encouraging women is inspiring and energizing!”

1-to-1 – Becky Davidson, Nelson Schmidt “When I first joined TEMPO’s EWL, one of the things I was most excited about was the opportunity for mentorship from TEMPO members in the community.  As soon as I learned that I could help shape the strategy for engagement in these 1-to-1 relationships, I was all in! Our committee is collaborative and open to new ideas, and I like that we continue to solicit feedback from both our mentors and mentees on an on-going basis to evolve and improve the program.”

Programming –Becky Stoner, ACTS Housing“The women on the program committee are a powerhouse! They really get stuff done, are enjoyable to be around, and I am learning from all of them. I’ve appreciated the flexibility of the committee and the opportunity to get involved right from the beginning.”

Community Involvement – Sarah Hyde, QPS Employment Group“I’ve been able to learn more about all the different organizations in the area that need a variety of different skill sets to achieve the goals they have set for their organizations. I’ve really enjoyed being involved with a committee whose sole purpose is be involved in the community and make a difference, specifically with women and girls who need assistance.”

“Why have you enjoyed being part of a committee this year?”

Nominations – Victoria Haas, Victoria Haas CPA LLC“As part of the Nominations Committee, I am grateful to have the opportunity to help shape and define what it means to be a part of EWL. It is apparent that there was a tremendous amount of thought put behind the nominations, letters of recommendations, and personal statements. It felt very personal to get to know the nominees through different perspectives, and I have no doubt that they will have a remarkable impact on this organization.”

Engagement – Amanda Wright, Northwestern Mutual“I enjoy being on the engagement committee because we’re tasked with finding out what makes our members tick and building relationships – which also happens to drive me in my “day job.” We’re interested in consistently taking a pulse of EWLers to find out what’s working and what’s not – what’s engaging them (hence the name). Our members joined EWL for a reason and it’s our committee’s mission to remind them why.”

Sponsorship – Lisa Proeber, Allsteel “It’s been great getting to know which companies in Milwaukee are invested in furthering the development of female leaders.  The sponsorship committee is a good opportunity for me to use my skillset in Business Development for the betterment of EWL. “

EWL Connects – Allison Pfeifer, Eppstein Uhen Architects“This was my first year in EWL and joining the Connects Committee was a great way to find instant connections in a smaller group setting. Leading a discussion with a diverse group of women has provided me with a sounding board of unique perspectives around challenges we face in our personal and professional lives.”

I To I Mentoring Program

If you’d like to learn more about becoming involved in the Emerging Women Leaders 1-to-1 Mentoring Program,

contact Marit at the TEMPO office.

Want to receive career advice that can take you to that next level? Need advice from someone regarding a difficult situation at work? Want advice on building your brand? These are just some pieces of guidance that Emerging Women Leader mentees have received from their TEMPO Milwaukee member mentors.

Mentee: Oby Nwabuzor, Director, Multicultural Initiatives, American Heart Association

About Oby What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to play professional basketball and when I got injured in high school, that passion led to wanting to become an Athletic Trainer & a Physical Therapist.

What was your favorite concert? Back in 2011 when Lupe Fiasco came to UWM Pantherfest.

Which actress resembles you most? I get some mentions regarding Lupita. I think it has a lot to do with our skin complexion. When I was at United Way, Amy Linder put up a side by side of her and I at an all-staff meeting. I thought it was hilarious.

What is the best word to describe you? Light.

Whom is the person you would most love to meet? Christ himself! John Maxwell is a nice runner-up.

If you were hungry and stopped into a gas station to pick something up, what would be your go-to food? The “trying to be healthy me” would be to find a decent protein shake. The “live your best life me” would be looking for a bag of chips.

Q&A What have you been most surprised by through your 1-1 match experience? How much we both have in common. We are like a 1-1 match made in heaven. I’ve learned that the people who look least like you will surprise you. Jenni is truly a blessing in my life and, too bad, she is forever stuck with me now. There can be a thousand voices that can speak to us, but only a few that truly have our best interest and well-being at heart.

What has been your best learning/favorite experience? I have a few. Watching Jenni SHINE FORTH on an all-male panel, when we started our work day with a lake run/walk meeting or even just casually grabbing tea! Each experience teaches me something and/or provides me insight into something I am not seeing. Jenni truly has my well-being at heart.

Though, one thing I have truly learned is the importance of self-care – especially when all that one does is for the community they belong to.

Would you recommend this program to others and why? YES! The program is promising for both involved. I have and continue to learn so much from Jenni. She is truly heaven-sent and I love being able to learn and grow from her experiences, leadership and motherly love. She pours into me more than she probably even realizes. <3

Meet one of the mentor/mentee matches participating in the program…

Mentor: Jenni Sevenich, CEO, Progressive Community Health Centers

About JenniWhat did you want to be when you grew up? I remember wanting to be a veterinarian, but I think that was because my cousin wanted to be one (she didn’t become one, either). When thought for myself, I wanted to be a psychologist.

What was your favorite concert? All of the Aerosmith concerts I have been to. I can’t choose just one of them – that would be like choosing a favorite child.

Which actress resembles you most? I was told a few times when I was younger that I resembled Michelle Pfeifer. Although one of those times was by an intoxicated old man on a bus in New Orleans. He looked at me and said, “You look like Catwoman.” Michelle Pfeifer was playing Catwoman in Batman at the time.

What is the best word to describe you? Compassionate. Though I fail at this plenty.

Whom is the person you would most love to meet? Jesus.

If you were hungry and stopped into a gas station to pick something up, what would be your go-to food?Nuts – most likely peanuts or almonds.

Q&AWhat have you been most surprised by through your 1-1 match experience? How much we have in common. You wouldn’t think that by looking at us – young/older, black/white, Oby grew up here, I grew up in northern WI; but we are both passionate about eliminating the racial and ethnic health disparities in the Milwaukee community, enjoy healthy practices ourselves, like to stay in, and enjoy Gospel.

What has been your best learning/favorite experience? One of the times we met was a beautiful summer morning, and we walked and talked along the lakefront. I learn a lot from Oby, as she is in a position where she is embedded in the community on a daily basis. Unfortunately, if one is not careful, it’s easy to get further removed from the community you serve as you move up in an organization. Oby helps keep me grounded in the community.

Would you recommend this program to others and why? Absolutely. It’s mutually beneficial. It’s more like a mentor/mentor program than a mentor/mentee program. Just because I’m older doesn’t mean Oby can’t mentor me! I am grateful for this program bringing Oby and me together in this way – our relationship has truly enriched my life.
