Fall is a Season of Thanks!
Fall is a season of harvest and thanksgiving. Every
season is different, and no matter what challenges we
have faced in the summer months with our crops, I am
always amazed at the ability of the plant to produce.
This year is definitely no exception, as we faced one of
the longest dry periods on record. Still, the advancement
in our hybrids, technologies, and cultural practices have
proven to still produce a crop. This is something that 20
years ago, with the same types of weather challenges,
we definitely would have had much less grain and
fodder for harvest.
Think about the differences. Herbicide traits allow for
better weed control than in past challenging years, and
insect traits protect our roots and stalks from damaging
insects. Our hybrids and varieties in general have
unbelievable potential to make a crop in even the most
stressful conditions. Basic fertilizer has advanced to
high efficiency fertilizer with new micronutrients and
carbon sources, all placed with precision placement.
Plant health products have evolved to keep plants green
and growing during time of stress or disease, and new
products, ideas, and technology are being tested every
day to add to plant and soil health.
The most rewarding part for me is seeing the results of
our Research Trials. It seems to take an army to keep
up with the developing science in agriculture; to sort
through the concepts, cultural practices, and products
as they come down the line. This is precisely why we
formed the partnership with Buckeye Ag Testing 10
years ago. It is our goal to stay on top of the changes in
the industry, and identify those ideas, products, and
best management practices that allow us to get the
most economical yield possible.
Buckeye Ag Testing plants, treats, and harvests our
Research plots and gives us true THIRD PARTY data.
We appreciate their honesty and hard work, as not all
the ideas we have come to fruition. These plots are the
base for the decisions we make for your farm. Backed
by solid research, we know when we recommend a
product or practice that it will perform.
We are advocates for local agriculture, and we want
our customers to out perform the competition. The
knowledge we gain through solid testing in our THIRD
PARTY research trials gives us insight on the next yield
leading trends before they are widely adapted.
Let us help you get to the next level! -Mitch
New Soybean Trait Options New Soybean Trait Options New Challenges In the past few years we have been experiencing
even tougher to kill Giant Ragweed and in some
cases marestail in soybeans. In general we have
been able to keep the weeds to a minimum with a
good residual burndown, and have seen outstanding
yield results from our Brodbeck RR2Yield soybean
lineup. With the Enlist weed control program not
yet available for sale, we recognize the need to add
more options to our seed portfolio.
The challenges we face every year are changing, and
our seed lineup for 2017 will address options to help
control challenges that may be ahead of us.
New for the 2017 season, we have formed a
partnership with Stine Seed. Stine seed brings us
more trait options in the highest quality genetics on
the market to address potential weed issues. In
addition to our high yielding and proven Brodbeck
soybean lineup, Stine will bring a proven lineup of
Liberty Link soybeans, as well as the new Xtend
soybeans with a trait for Dicamba resistance. Stine
Seeds has a tradition of breeding excellence in
soybeans, and our research has proven them to be
the best option for the highest yielding varieties in
the Liberty Link soybean.
Let us help you solve problems! Planning and preparation gain importance as we get
multiple traits of herbicide resistance in soybeans.
It is vital that if you are using a different herbicide
system, or if you are using multiple systems to
address problems, that we have that all planned
ahead of time. We want to help you solve problems
with these new technologies, and avoid mistakes
that can easily happen where there is less planning!
The new herbicide technologies will require different
carrier rates, spray tips, temperature and humidity
restrictions for herbicide efficacy, and possibly even
setbacks from the edges of the fields.
Let us help you identify technologies that will work
best for you, and then design a program that works to
solve your problem. By purchasing your seed from
Bambauer’s, we will know the technologies and
programs that you need, and successfully manage
the challenges on your farm.
Make us your True Partner Many companies have good seed in the industry, and
parody exists within these companies. We feel that
we are positioned with the highest yielding genetics on
the market, and now have the trait options to address
any weed or insect issues that could arise.
Our Research Center allows us to focus on the hybrids
and varieties, and how they respond to different
systems of management. We learn from these trails
which hybrids and varieties respond to varying fertility
levels, herbicides, fungicides, foliar products, starter
fertilizers, seed treatments, and much more. This
research and the knowledge we have from working
with you on your agronomy needs, allows us the
ability to place the right hybrid with more certainty
for your specific needs.
We feel that this will be even more important to
prevent mistakes, maintain efficiency, and overall be
able to make better recommendations for you in the
future as more traits and seed options are available. If
we know what you are planting, we have a much
better handle on any issues that may arise, and how to
deal with those specific to your hybrid, variety, cultural
practices, and weather.
Loyalty Bonus Program
We also realize, however, that we need to do
something to reward our customers for that loyalty.
Keep an eye on your mailbox if you have been a
Bambauer agronomy customer. We are rolling out a
True Partner program. There will be great rewards
for those that want to partner with us for your seed,
chemicals, and fertilizer!
Herbicide tolerance continues to provide challengesHerbicide tolerance continues to provide challenges Herbicide tolerant weeds The past 10 years, we have seen increased tolerance
from several weed species to glyphosate, as well as
other herbicide families. We have adjusted our
cultural practices, continue to refine our herbicide
programs, and have been able to manage the
herbicide tolerance that has been building for several
seasons. This season seems to be the exception. The
long dry period we experienced in the summer made
weed control a challenge to say the least.
Giant ragweed has continued to grow as a weed
problem in a few areas, but this season they can be
seen in nearly every field. Herbicides that normally
knock them out when applied at the correct rate and
time, did not provide the control that we have
experienced in a more normal growing season.
Marestail have been an issue for nearly 8 years in
western Ohio, and we have done a fairly good job
controlling them. The combination of tillage, fall
applications of 2,4-D, and spring burndown
applications with 2,4-D and residuals have kept the
weed escapes of marestail to a minimum. This
season, the later per-emerge applications that failed
to get the rain, never got the residual activated and
marestail continued to germinate. Marestail escapes
this season were definitely more than the past.
Start weed control this fall! We noticed a huge advantage in the fall sprayed fields
for control of marestail. Fall spraying allows you to
use 2,4-D and Dicamba, in a time where the Dicamba
will not volatilize in the lower temperatures. The
combination of these herbicides provides excellent
control of marestail, and also controls any winter
annuals, perennials, and biennial weeds that may be
causing issues as well. Consider it the first step in
marestail control by killing the biennial population,
and also helping on weeds such as dandelion and
purple dead nettle.
Giant Ragweed is it’s own animal... When trying to control giant ragweed, a fall application
will not provide effective control. Giant ragweed is a
summer annual, and dies with a frost in the fall. Try-
ing to control it in the fall would mean
using a residual herbicide to keep it from germinating
in the spring. We have built resistance with giant
ragweed to many families of herbicides. There simply
are not residual herbicides that are able control giant
ragweed with a fall application.
The best way to control giant ragweed that have
become glyphosate resistance, is to change the mode
of action that you are using to another chemistry. We
have seen in situations of moderate resistance that
adding Flexstar or Cobra with glyphosate can greatly
increase control with proper application and timing.
These treatments this past year in the dry weather
seemed to decrease in effectiveness as the season
progressed without rain.
Consider proven new technologies The next step in controlling resistant weeds is to
change the technology of the soybean from a
Roundup Ready to another form of herbicide
tolerance. At this point in time, the best option on the
market with a viable herbicide label is the Liberty Link
system. The Liberty Link system allows control of
giant ragweed, as well as helping on other resistant
weeds such as waterhemp and marestail. It is not a
cure-all system, however. The use of a residual
burndown, and a correctly applied application of
Liberty with a grass herbicide will be necessary to get
the best control of these tough to kill weeds.
Other options in the future may include the Enlist
system, Roundup Xtend, and
potential other herbicide
resistant soybeans that will
also provide viable control
of giant ragweed. These
systems do not have the
approval for herbicides,
and with the past history of
Dicamba volatilization, we
are hesitant to recommend
it until the herbicide is
proven to not move!

Preparing for 2017 Fertilizer Regulations A soil sample will be required for all fertilizer applications starting in 2017. To prepare for
next fall, the time to start sampling is now. We have some additional options on sampling,
and all will comply with the new regulations. The most effective way to sample is by soil type
in 2.5 acre areas. This method allows a precise application that is able to be done with the
soil type in mind.
Listed below are the sampling options, which will now be required to be taken every 4 years.
Contact us to build a plan to sample your fields, so that fall applications can go smoothly.
Below is an example of a soil type
map in 2.5 acre areas. The
numbers are where the samples
were taken within the areas, and
separate maps will show the pH,
Phosphorous, and Potassium
levels.
Application maps will also be
provided once a
recommendation
has been made.
