At the age of three, Arthur Biyarslanov fled with his family from the war-ravaged frontier of Chechnya. Narrowly escap-ing bullets and a bomb that destroyed the car in front of his fleeing family, Arthur and his brother ran to the border and forded a freezing river to safety. He became a refugee first in Azerbaijan, and ultimately in Canada. In spite of these difficult experiences, and the trials that confront any child refugee in strange lands, Arthur thrived on the discipline and camera-derie of sport, taking up first competitive soccer and then boxing. Years of dedication and discipline have made him into a champion amateur boxer at age 20, winning the first Pan Am Games gold medal in boxing for Canada in 40 years in 2015 and qualifying for the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Written from extensive interviews with Arthur and his family, Next Round is the story of Arthur’s journey from frightened little boy to confident soccer player and eventually to a world-class amateur boxer.

Eleven-year-old Bailey believes in miracles. She has to; it will take a miracle to keep her warring parents together. This summer they are at a Marriage Counselling camp, leaving Bailey and her little brother Kevin with their estranged grandmother in the island town of Felicity Bay. There, an eccentric deposed minister makes a prophecy that a stranger from the sea will change everything.

When Bailey discovers a mermaid-shaped piece of driftwood, she begins to believe that the mermaid is this stranger from the sea. Then, when a dolphin becomes stranded on the beach, Bailey forgets her own troubles and rouses the reluctant locals into action. United for the first time in years, the community works together to dig a channel and lead the stranded dolphin back to the bay. Inspired by her part in this collective act of heroism, Bailey finds new faith that her future will somehow work out, with the love of her now extended family.

Shari GreenWritten in light and lyrical free verse, a warm and wistful novel about the hard and beautiful truths of growing up and growing into one’s own ability to shape the world.

Shari Green spent childhood summers explor-ing tide pools and reading stacks of library books. She’s still in love with stories and the sea, so when a driftwood mermaid washed up in her imagination, she knew a beach story was brewing. In her non-writing life, Shari works as a Practical Nurse, and she’s been a volunteer with children and teens in her church for many years. Shari lives in Campbell River, British Co-lumbia, with her husband, kids, and the worst watchdog ever. This is her first book for children.

“Family secrets, as well as unique and complex characteriza-tions, make this a light-hearted yet evocative page-turner.

Told in verse-novel form, Green’s writing is captivatingly visual, with seamless inclusions of figurative language. As with many other verse-novels, a first-person narrative, told from the present tense, makes the story immediate and compelling, ver-satile as independent reading or as an engaging read-aloud.

Choices in formatting add to the text’s readability, extending it to a wider than typical age and ability range. The varied line lengths support comprehension, with wide indenting and use of italics to identify dialogue, as well as extra spacing between speakers. Onomatopoeia is flush left and italicized. In addition to these helpful cues, imagined speeches between Bailey and a piece of driftwood she has personified occur in playscript style.

Highly Recommended.” —CM Magazine

Manon GauthierTranslated by

Poems tall or short or wide—All are infinite inside. In Gilles Tibo’s wonder-filled tribute to poetry, poems bloom in fields, fly on the wings of birds, and float on the foam of the sea. They are written in the dark of night, in the light of happiness, and in the warmth of the writer’s heart. Each poem is illustrated with Manon Gauthier’s

whimsical paper collage art, which is both child-like and sophisticated.

Rhymed or unrhymed, regular or irregular, the verses bring not just poems but the very concept of poetry to the level of a child, making them accessible to all. If all the world is a poem, then anyone can be a poet!

Gilles Tibo was an illustrator for many years before he discovered a pas-sion for writing. He has published more than 150 books in English and French, including Where’s my Hockey Sweater?, Too Many Books, and the classic Simon series, including Simon and the Wind and Simon and his Boxes. His titles have won numerous prizes, including the Mr. Christie Award and the Alvine-Bélisle Prize. A Canada Council Fellow, Gilles also has nomina-tions from IBBY Canada and the Hans Christian Andersen Prize. In 2009 one of his most beloved characters had her big screen debut in the film Noémie, The Secret. Gilles lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Manon Gauthier is a graphic artist who made the leap to picture book illustration in 2006. After her first book was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature, she dedicated herself entirely to illustration, and to giving presentations and art workshops in schools across Quebec. A flexible artist, Manon works in many media, including gouache, pencils, and paper collage. She lives in Montreal.

It’s time for this little one to go out. But which hat will he choose? Red hat, green hat, striped hat, penguin hat, teddy bear hat? Once that decision is made, that hat just doesn’t stay on, while shoes are tied and jacket is buttoned. One more visit to the potty. And once this child is in the stroller at last, will that hat be on his head?

Toddlers will delight in choosing their own hats after they see this charming story. A simple, rhythmic text that re-flects the everyday challenge of getting a toddler ready to go out. Written by Theo Heras and Illustrated with gentle humour by Renné Benoit.

Timo’s PartyAward-Winning Author

Victoria AllenbyIllustrated by Award-winning Artist

Dean GriffithsCan Timo be a good friend when it also means facing his fears?

Big parties make Timo’s fur stand on end. But hosting one might be the key to helping his friend Hedgewick’s culi-nary dreams come true; a famous food critic is coming to town, and an apple festival in Timo’s orchard would be just the thing to showcase Hedgewick’s cooking. So the intro-verted rabbit begins to prepare the party, one invitation, decoration and arrangement at a time. But when the big day arrives, will the support from his friends and his belief in Hedgewick’s cooking be enough to impress Madame LaPointe?

With innovative text inserts reflecting invitations and news articles, and Dean Griffiths’ expressive full-colour illustrations, Timo’s Party offers a friendly world and relat-able problems for young readers to navigate. In this se-quel to Allenby and Griffiths’ Timo’s Garden, an encourag-ing cast of friends helps Timo work past his fears to make Hedgewick’s cooking and the Apple Festival a scrumptious success! Also included is a recipe for a delicious apple cake that will inspire children to give hosting a try for themselves.

Little Fox’s paw prints make such beautiful pictures in the newly fallen snow. Left here, right there, around that fallen branch—he scatters them throughout the forest until, too late, he finds he can’t retrace his steps back home. Lost and afraid, Little Fox wants to agree when a kind, old owl offers to fly ahead and guide him. But Mama Fox has warned him often:

In gentle, expressive text, Nicole Snitselaar spins a tale that goes far beyond a simple “stranger danger” warn-ing. Her Little Fox, equipped with his own ingenuity as well as his mother’s wisdom, cleverly finds a way for the other animals to attract Mama Fox’s attention while keep-ing himself safe. Alicia Padrón renders this resilient Little Fox and his forest companions in soft watercolours, their rounded shapes and endearing features easing any anxiety that little listeners might feel about being lost.

Alma FullertonIllustrated by Award-winning Artist

Kim La Fave

It is time to plant the rice crop in Malini’s Sri Lankan community, and the little girl is both excited and nervous to help for the first time. What if she does it wrong? Will she be responsible if the crop fails? When the oxcart rumbles in loaded with seedlings, she reluctantly agrees to watch the big, imposing animal while the driver takes a break. Suddenly, the skies go dark with monsoon rain. A flash flood pours down the road, separating Malini from the driver and her family. They are shouting for her to run for higher ground, but what about the rice? Summoning

courage she never dreamed she possessed, Malini resolves to save ox, cart, and seedlings, no matter what it takes.

Award-winning author Alma Fullerton tells Malini’s story in expressive free verse that vibrates with emotion and energy. The moods of Sri Lanka’s rainy season come alive as Kim La Fave, illustrator of the award-winning Shin Chi’s Canoe, uses a fresh style that is both contemporary and impressionistic to depict the courage of one little girl fac-ing the power of a monsoon.

Brian Deines

It is 1981. In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a fishing boat overloaded with 60 Vietnamese refugees drifts. The motor has failed; the hull is leaking; the drinking water is nearly gone. This is the dramatic true story recounted by Tuan Ho, who was six years old when he, his mother, and two sisters dodged the bullets of Vietnam’s military police for the perilous chance of boarding that boat.

Told to multi-award-winning author Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch and illustrated by the celebrated Brian Deines,

Tuan’s story has become Adrift At Sea, the first picture book to describe the flight of Vietnam’s “Boat People” refugees. Illustrated with sweeping oil paintings and complete with an expansive historical and biographical section with photographs, this non-fiction picture book is all the more important as the world responds to a new generation of refugees risking all on the open water for the chance at safety and a new life.

Tuan Ho escaped Vietnam at age six in 1981 among thousands of other “boat people” refugees. Through author Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, he has told the story of how he, his mother, and two sisters survived five days adrift on the ocean with dwindling fresh water before being rescued by a U.S. aircraft carrier. Joining the rest of his family in Canada, he went on to attend school in Toronto and is now an accomplished physiotherapist with a new clinic. His wife Edae, a primary school teacher, is the child of other Vietnamese boat people refugees who settled in Ireland and then Canada. Tuan and Edae have two young daughters, Madeline and Emily.

Brian Deines is a fine artist and the award-winning illustrator of over twenty children’s books, including Elephant Journey, A Bear in War, Bear on the Homefront, and In a Cloud of Dust. Dragonfly Kites was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Illustration and the Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award. Brian lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Kari-Lynn WintersIllustrated by Award-winning Artist

François Thisdale

Phoebe—half Jamaican, half French Canadian—hates her school nickname of “French Toast.” So she is morti-fied when, out on a walk with her Jamaican grandmother, she hears a classmate shout it out at her. To make things worse, Nan-ma, who is blind, wants an explanation of the name. How can Phoebe describe the colour of her skin to someone who has never seen it? “Like tea, after you’ve added the milk,” she says. And her father? “Like warm banana bread.” And Nan-ma herself? She is like maple syrup poured over...well...

In French Toast, Kari-Lynn Winters uses descriptions of favourite foods from both of Phoebe’s cultures to celebrate the varied skin tones of her family. François Thisdale’s imaginative illustrations fill the landscape with whimsy and mouthwatering delight as Phoebe realizes her own resilience and takes ownership of her nickname proudly.

A celebration of culture, colour, and cuisine

“...addresses [fostering] in a gentle, age-appropriate manner free of blame....Gauthier’s collage illustrations, in muted tones and childlike shapes, effectively dampen the realism of the potentially scary scenarios in the story and keep the mood somber but hope-ful. Though it might not be representative of every fostering experience, this sensitive story nevertheless could be a comfort to children in the foster system.”—Booklist

“Gauthier’s…drawings are simple but poignantly depict the range of emotions Elliot experiences...Pearson handles this delicate subject with an understandable, sensitive, and sympathetic text. Recommended for libraries seeking books to help young chil-dren understand that birth parents sometimes do not know how to care for them and that other caregivers must enter their lives.”—School Library Journal

“Pearson’s refusal to sugarcoat [Elliot’s] journey should resonate with children in similar situations.”—Publishers Weekly

“The book tackles a complex issue in an approachable and kid-friendly way with adorable bunny characters and soft collage illustrations. It’s a must-read.”—Today’s Parent

“A simple yet powerful tale of hope, love, and belonging, Elliot tugs on the heart-strings and leaves readers with a heightened appreciation of the courage and resil-iency of foster children and their families. Highly Recommended.”—CM Magazine
