After winning its f rst 27matches last season, theJackson County Central

volleyball team lost in thesub-section f nals to Mar-shall, ending the seasonshort of a trip to state.

Its that match againstMarshall that fuels the Hus-kies as they enter a new sea-son with all but one playerback from last years South-

    west Conference champion-ship team.

To remember what hap-pened last year to end ourseason has brought teamunity, head coach TeresaVanEpps said. Becauseof that, they have the goalof state. They want to pushpast sections and get tostate. The difference be-tween last year and this yearis they believe it.

That belief comes froma lot of time together onthe court, which will make

a big difference as the sea-son starts.

Its huge, VanEppssaid. The girls can do somuch stuff because theyvegot the experience. Theirknowledge and their experi-ence is big.

Playing together has ledto improved communica-tion on the court and atight-knit group.

Theyre always encour-aging each other, VanEpps

    said. They have great teamunity.

The Huskies return thedominant frontcourt of se-niors Whitney Burmeister

and Kaylee Benson, who re-corded 266 and 193 kills last

year, respectively. The duoalso had the top two servepercentages and combined

for 92 blocks and 497 digsa year ago.

Burmeister returns asoutside hitter and Bensonis at middle hitter.

Junior Sydnee Donnelliwill move from libero tooutside hitter. Last year,Donnelli had 260 digs and31 ace serves for the Hus-

JCC football team hoping to fll some big holesyear head coach Tom Schul-ler and his coaching staff gettheir linemen to perform ata superior level.

This year will be anothertest for Schuller and hiscrew as the Huskies willopen the season with nostarters back up front.

Last years group helpedthe Huskies score a team re-cord 33.2 points per game, but the only linemen back

with considerable experi-ence are senior Alex Tewes

    and sophomore Nolan Ho-henstein.

Tewes started last seasonbut an injury will keep himon the sideline for at leastthe f rst two weeks, Schul-ler said.

What was already a mas-sive undertaking of replac-ing the offensive line wasmade more difficult withthat, Schuller said. Werereally thin on the offensiveline.

    Tewes will play guard

when hes back on the f eld. Also playing guard will besenior Merlin Tordsen, withsenior Kyle Edwards, juniorJohn Marker and sopho-more Jack Ziemer compet-ing for time on the line.

Hohenstein will play lefttackle, with senior JoshBretzman at right tackle.Bretzman, an honorable-mention all-conference de-fensive end last season, sawa little time on the offensiveline a year ago. Also com-

peting for time at tackle aresenior Joe Heckard, juniorsDillon Sampson and AveryMiller and sophomore RyanBrighton.

Playing center for theHuskies will be junior MarkThaemlitz, with Heckard asthe backup.

Well be shuff ing peoplearound on the line, Schul-ler said. We need to keeppracticing every day to getbetter.

    What gives Schuller hope

for another successful sea-son is the skill players onoffense.

We have a lot of experi-ence at the skill positions,Schuller said. We have a

    very experienced, physicalbackf eld returning.

The Huskies return twoall-conference runningbacks in seniors CooperMoore and Carsen Nyborgand all-conference tight end

    junior Zach Copley.

couragement most, the JCCcheerleaders will be leadingthe way from their spot onthe sideline.

The cheerleaders havebeen practicing for weeks, getting their chants, cheersand stunts ready for thebright lights of Fridaynights.

This years squad is ledby returning football cheer-leaders seniors Karlee We-gner and Emma Smith,

junior Jessica Voehl andfreshman Bailey Schneek-loth. Freshman KortneyPorter also has cheerlead-ing experience, cheeringfor the basketball team lastseason.

Brandi Sether-Hassing,Hally Dauffenbach, HollyReiter and Jenna Stade, sophomore Kassidy Tim-mer and freshman MadisonCregeen.

The squad has less expe-rience than years past, but

was part of JCCs cheerteam that performed wellat a camp in Okoboji, Iowa, this summer. The cheerteam earned three awardsat the camp and Voehl andWegner were named all-

    Americans. Schneekloth,Sether-Hassing and Smith

were each nominated forall-American status, givingthe football cheerleadingteam plenty of talent.

Returning letter winners for the Jackson County Central cross country team are Jordan Ringgenberg, Jordan Snyder, Jason Vongsavanh, BenKocak, Jack Ringkob and Jadin Bezdicek.

For the Jackson Coun-ty Central cross countryteams, 2011 will be a seasonof replacing some greatrunners.

The boys have experiencein that category, findinga way to have success lastseason after losing a solidgroup of seniors. This year

will be more of the sameas the Huskies are withoutall-state runner Justin Cookand state qualifier MarcStrom.

The girls graduated a very decorated group ofseniors and had two other

varsity runners who didntgo out for the sport this fall, leaving eighth-grader JadinBezdicek as the lone girl onthe varsity squad.

    Seniors lead boys

Despite losing two greatrunners, the Huskies havehigh hopes again this sea-son, thanks to two solidseniors and a big group ofrunners with varsity expe-rience.

Senior Ben Kocak hasbeen the undeniable leaderof the team so far this fall,

with senior John Isaacsonalso providing leadership.

Ben is providing tre-mendous leadership, co-head coach Brad Strom

    by DAN CONDON

said. He has six years ofexperience and he is instill-ing the will to become morethan a mid-pack team.

Co-head coach Kerri Ko-cak said the two seniorshave looked good so far.

    Their senior leadership

will help, she said. Yourealways looking for seniorleadership and we havethat again. They always stepit up.

Juniors Jordan Sny-der and Jason Vongsa-

vanh, sophomores Jere-my Ringgenberg, JordanRinggenberg, Jordan Cush-man and Peter Nasby andfreshman Jack Ringkob allreturn with varsity experi-ence, with Kocak, Ring-kob, Jordan Ringgenberg,

Snyder and Vongsavanh allearning letters last season.

We have a wealth ofvarsity experience, Stromsaid, which is somethingKocak said will be a benef t.

The more you race, themore competitive you be-

come and the better youget, she said.

The coaches expect tightcompetition for the scor-ing spots each meet, whichshould push the boys to runto their full potential.

Our top three or fourare going to be pretty solid,Coach Kocak said. Theyllrace for counting scores;that could switch arounda lot.

While most of the boyshave a good amount of var-

sity experience, they haventhad their scores count veryoften as the Huskies havehad some top-notch runnersgo through the program thepast few years.

These guys have beenin the shadows for a few

years, Strom said. Theywere able to see that hardwork could bring the resultof something special.

Bezdicek to lead girlsBezdicek had an impres-

sive debut season last yearafter breaking into the var-sity lineup midway throughthe season. Bezdicek andJade Holthe, who didntgo out for cross countrythis season, formed the1-2 punch for a JCC team

that won its f rst SouthwestConference title since 2001.

The only other two JCCgirls out for cross countrythis season are seventh-graders Jayni Anderson andRhilynn Luhmann, who willboth run junior high meets.

With no girls to train with, Bezdicek has beenrunning with the boys inpractice and has beenable to hold her own.

The pro for her is shemixes in well with the boys,Kocak said. She missesJade, but she fits in withthe middle of our boys pack

very well. She has trainingpartners; theyre just notgirls.

    After earning honorable-mention all-conference

honors and all-section hon-ors last season, Kocak andStrom expect big thingsfrom their lone varsity girl.

Jadin showed that shesone of the top area run-ners, Kocak said. Weexpect individually a lot of

good things from her. After how she f nished

last year at sections, wewant to get her in the top10 and advance to state,Strom said, adding her off-season work shows she iscommitted to another greatseason. Her aspirationsare high. You dont run 275miles in the summer if youarent dedicated. Our jobis to help her achieve thehighest goal, which is to run

and freshman CourtneyPlace return after beingnamed to the all-conferenceteam and honorable-men-tion pick senior Jen Schmidtis also back for SSC.

    Rasche will play libero

for the Quasars, giving theteam stability in the backrow.

Shes all over the place, and thats a good thing,Owen said. I feel conf dent

when shes in the back.Rasche had a team-high

438 digs last year and served41 aces.

    Place returns as an out-

side hitter and Schmidt, who played outside hitterlast year, will move to mid-dle hitter this year.

    Schmidt had 245 kills,168 blocks and 250 digslast season. Place pickedup 196 kills, 130 blocks, 226digs and a team-high 75 aceserves.

Place went to f ve volley-ball camps in the offseasonand Schmidt played for theSouthwest Minnesota Ju-niors, but they werent theonly SSC players putting intime in the offseason.

Weve got some good, powerful hitters, she said.We have to get set up so wecan hit. Weve been workingreally hard on passing.

Owen has seen goodleadership in practice andhopes that continues intothe season as the Quasarsface some early tests.

SSC opens with top-ranked Jackson CountyCentral tonight (Thursday)and follows that up with thehome opener Sept. 6 againstWorthington. The RRCopener is Sept. 8 against Mt.Lake-Butterf eld-Odin and

SWU hopes toget back in wincolumn afer twowinless seasons

    by DAN CONDON

    Sports Editor

    The Southwestern Unit-

ed football team may havelost its last 22 games, buthead coaches Jeff Drentand Jason Fisher say this

years squad of Wildcatscould be the ones to getback in the win column.

Its a new season,Drent said. Someonesgot to break the cycle.

The Wildcats have hadback-to-back 0-9 seasons, but the effort and hard workhas never faded.

    Believe has been a big

New season has Wildcats excited word, Fisher said, withDrent adding, The kidshave bought into it so far.

The Wildcats return quitea few players, including anumber of starters on theoffensive and defensivelines.

The coaches said all spotsare open, but senior return-ing starters Austin Liepold(left tackle) and Brady Mey-

er (left guard) will be backup front when the Wildcatshave the ball. Senior centerJacob Clarke and juniorright guard Erik Habermanboth started some last sea-son and will also be on theline. Juniors Austin Drolland Austin Rossow bothplayed some last year andare competing for the righttackle job.

Senior Adam Wallace isalso competing for time onthe offensive line and both

coaches said junior MykilVonk will play whereverhes needed.

Hell be on the field, its just a matter of where,Fisher said.

Jameson Collin returns asa starter at tight end, wherethe lanky senior can blockor haul in passes from eitherJustin Jass or Aaron Fest.

    Also playing tight end will

be senior Cody Malcolmand junior Ben Peter.Jass, a junior, f nished as

the teams starting quarter-back last season and is ina competition with sopho-more Fest for the starting

job this year.We have a quarterback

challenge going, Fishersaid. Theyve both lookedpretty good.

Senior Kyle Elder returnsat fullback and is joined by

    junior Kurt Schmitz. Senior

Jake Walker started at run-ning back and will be joinedby Schmitz and senior LukeHenkels.

Henkels will also playwide receiver, where he hasstarted since his freshmanseason. Other receiversare senior Jacob Olson and

juniors Erik Jass and Mat-thew Soto.

    Returning quite a few of-

fensive linemen is a positivefor the Wildcats, but Fishersaid the group still needs toimprove.

We need to work onthe offensive line, he said. The guys are back but wedef nitely need to get betterin that area.

For that reason, the Wild-cats spent almost the entire

whole week working onoffense, particularly theground game.

    Stop in after the game!

To start, were def nitelygoing to make an attemptto run, Drent said. Weretrying to get the guys to bethinking about run f rst andthe passing game will comelater.

With the focus of the f rstweek of practice on offense, the new defense took a backseat. But the coaches said

when the new 5-2 scheme was introduced, it wentover well.

For the most part, thekids are doing well, Fishersaid. Its pretty basic; itsassignment football. Just do

what youre supposed to doand make plays.

The 5-2 defense has twoends, two tackles and a nosetackle along the front lineand two linebackers.

Playing the nose tackleposition will be Clarke andVonk, who both started last

year. Haberman and Meyerreturn as defensive tackles,

with Wallace also in themix. Liepold and Elder bothstarted at end last year and

return, with Peters, Rossowand Droll also playing theposition.

I really think our de-fensive line is going to bea strength, Fisher said.Theyre our most experi-enced group and they have

decent size. Theyll keepguys off our linebackers andthe linebackers can makeplays.

Schmitz will move fromdefensive end to linebackerand will be joined by Hen-

kels, who started at corner-back last year. The nice thing is we have

a lot of guys coming backthat have seen the f eld,Drent said.

Playing cornerback willbe Erik Jass, Justin Jass,Soto and Olson, with Collin,Walker, Malcolm and Festplaying safety.

Collin and Henkels willhandle the punting duties,

with Henkels likely kickingoff. Clarke returns as longsnapper and Olson is backas the teams holder.

The coaches said NewUlm Cathedral was theclear-cut favorite to winthe Red Rock Conference,

with Springf eld, Red RockCentral and Mt. Lake-But-terfield-Odin also in thehunt.

For the Wildcats, the goalis to be in every game andto continue to work hard.

We want to be competi-tive, Drent said. If thekids continue with the at-titude theyve had so far, Ithink well be all right.

SWU FB: Wildcats return talentContinued from C3

JCC VB: Huskies bring back almost everyone with hopes of trip to stateContinued from C1

lee Burmeister will alsoplay outside hitter for theHuskies.

Senior Lexi Schneek-loth and junior MichelleVanEpps return as settersand have the luxury of dis-tributing the ball to a num-ber of hard hitters. The duocombined for 812 set assistslast season. VanEpps added87 kills and 130 digs whileSchneekloth had 70 digs.

Junior Jasmine Ericksonwill play middle hitter afterrecording a team high 73.5ace blocks last season. Er-ickson also had 106 kills and59 digs a year ago.

Senior Lacey Schneek-loth and freshman KathrynNasby are defensive special-ists and junior MackenzieReed is a right-side hitter.

Courtney Donnelli, whohad 173 kills, 260 digs and26 blocks last year, is theonly player lost to gradua-tion, meaning the Huskies

will be ready to defend theirSWC title.

    The girls have set their

goals and theres no stop-ping them, Coach VanEppssaid. They are determinedthis year.

To reach their goals,VanEpps said the team willhave to improve its passing.

Weve spent a lot oftime on passing and servereceive, she said, addingserving has also been a focalpoint so far. Were going toserve aggressive.

The Huskies open theseason at home tonight(Thursday) against South-

west Star Concept and hostSt. James next Tuesday. Sixof JCCs f rst seven matchesare at home, with the loneroad match in that stretchbeing the conference open-er Sept. 8 in Luverne.

The highlight of the earlyseason comes Sept. 15 asthe Huskies host Marshall.

Were excited, VanEppssaid of the early-season test. The girls wish they couldplay them tomorrow. Hope-fully we can keep that thirstfor them.

Other conference teamsto watch, VanEpps said, are

    Pipestone and a scrappyWindom team.

Moore rushed for 761 yards and six touchdownslast year and was named co-offensive back of the yearfor the Southwest Confer-ence. Nyborg gained 884

yards on the ground andrumbled in for 11 scores.

Also playing runningback will be juniors DarickVancura, Spencer John-son, Kyle Edlin and Travis

    Beeck.Copley had a team-high

31 catches for 529 yardsand four touchdowns a

year ago. Copley, who hasstarted since eighth grade, also did damage in the run-ning game with his powerful

    blocking.Not many juniors have

played since eighth grade,Schuller said. Hes one ofthe most experienced guysin the league.

Copley and fellow juniorquarterback Tanner Menkeestablished a potent passingattack, with Menke throw-ing for 1,012 yards and 10scores last season.

We return our startingquarterback, which is al-

ways nice, Schuller said.Menke will have new tar-

gets to throw to at receiver, which will be played byseniors Brett Larson andCaleb Hakes, juniors Kyle

Luhmann, Taylor Christo-pher and Austin Hinkeldeyand sophomores ShadrachWacker, Jon Harmeningand Darnell Taylor-Breck.

Also playing tight end forthe Huskies will be juniorsTravis Beeck and TannerPost and sophomore MattSchmit.

On defense, the Huskieswill be as inexperienced in

the backf eld as their offen-sive line is.

The revamped defensivebackf eld will see Wacker,Christopher, Larson, Luh-mann, Taylor-Breck, Hakesand Hinkeldey vying fortime at cornerback, withMenke and Copley spend-ing time at safety. Alsoplaying safety will be Lar-son, senior Nick Carroll,

    junior Daniel Weires andHarmening.

Defensively we have toreplace our entire startingsecondary, Schuller said.

The line is also inexpe-rienced, but at least hasBretzman returning to hisright defensive end posi-tion. Schmit and Beeck arein a really good battlefor the other end spot, withPost, Miller and Thaemlitz

also competing for playingtime.Defensive tackles will be

Tordsen, Hohenstein, Ed- wards, Brighton, Ziemerand Johnson, who Schullersaid will be a utility playeron defense.

Moore returns to leadthe linebackers, which isa group with some experi-ence. Moore will play thelaser, with Nyborg playingthe mike linebacker spot

and Vancura at razor.Johnson and Beeck willback up the linebackerpositions, as will Edlin.

We have to replace alot of guys on defense,Schuller said, adding thatmakes it important forguys like Johnson andBeeck to be ready at mul-tiple positions. Our big-gest issue is going to be

rotating guys in and out.The Huskies dont re-

turn kicker Marcelo Rin-aldi, but have anotherexchange student to takehis place in Niklas Keller.Menke will do the punt-ing for the Huskies, withMoore and Menke re-turning punts and kicks.

With such a new group,Schuller is hoping to seeimprovement each game.

Weve got a lot of bigshoes to fill, he said.Weve got to get betterevery week.

If offseason work is anyindication, the Huskies

will be willing to put inthe time to get better.

A lot of kids put a lotof time into the weightroom and it really shows,Schuller said. Weve got

some big, strong kids. The strength of our teamis our physical strength.

Schuller expects Mar-shall and Luverne toagain be the toughestteams in the SouthwestConference, but hopeshis team can competefor at least a share of theconference title for thethird year in a row.

We hope we can com-pete, he said.
