We took our lumps andI hope our players learned alot from last years defeats andwins. This years, we cantmake the excuse that we wereyoung. Weve got a lot ofexperience but the biggestquestion has to be atquarterback.Gonzales lostonly one player from lastyears team in two-year starterand senior quarterbackTraegon Marquez.Looking to fill the shoes atquarterback will be Manuelsgrandson Bryan, a 5-10, 155junior.Bryan was hurt last yearand didnt get a whole lot ofexperience at the juniorvarsity level, explained thehead coach. But hes the typeof kid who can pick it up fast.Hes going to be the one whois going to lead us.Gonzales will also have tofind a new tailback withreturnee Saul Perez out for theseason with an injury.Still the Bobcats will betough on offense with abackfield that will includeTony Esquibel, a 5-9, 185senior; Caleb Harris, a 6-0, 180junior; and Brynden Burns, a5-9, 155 junior.Losing Saul was a big loss, said Gonzales. But I hope therest of the guys can pick it up.Tony is a hard inside runnerand Caleb has got the speed tobreak it all the way. Bryndenis also a tough hard nosedrunner. The offensive line will bespearheaded by center SamRink, a 5-10, 205 junior androtaing at the guard positionswill be Brady Rink, a 5-10, 180senior; Dillon Bohlander, a5-10, 185 junior; and ChadHolden, a 5-10, 205 junior. The ends will feature KolbyPalmer, a 5-10, 170 junior andBrynden Burns. Were going to have somesolid kids up front, laudedGonzales. So, Im prettyconfident we can do somegood things on offense. On the defensive side, theBobcats will have a lot ofdepth at many of the positions.Gonzales can go with S.Rink, Bohlander, and Holdenat noseguard. At defensiveends will be Antonio Huerta, a5-10, 185 junior, and TannerGrasmick, a 5-11, 185 junior. The linebacking corps willinclude Esquibel; ArmandoHernandez, a 5-9, 155sophomore; and Juan Morales. In the defensive backfieldwill be Kolby Palmer, Harris,Burns, and Koy Palmer, a 5-10,155 freshman.Again, we should be prettysolid on defense, saidGonzales.Looking at the conference,Gonzales said, Springfieldwill be the team to beat.Walsh will be tough but notthe team they were last year.Holly, Wiley, and McClave arerebuilding. We have a veteran ball cluband we lost only one player,Gonzales reiterated. We graduatednine players that contributedbig time on both sides of theball. This year, were going tohave a lot of kids new to thevarsity level but have beenwith the program the last fewyears. Were going to be avery young team this year withabout half of our kids beingfreshmen. So, everybody isgoing to be able to contributeat the varsity level because weare low in numbers. On offense, the Wildcatswill basically have a wholenew backfield.Jason Barth, an athletic 5-7,150 sophomore, will be takingover at the quarterbackposition. Hewas the teamssecondleading rusherlast year.Hell bejoined byRobertDarnell, a 5-7,140 senior, orChristianOrozco, a 5-7,150sophomore, attailback. Christian is lookinggood and Jace has been ourfullback for the last threeyears. He has a goodunderstanding of hisresponsibilities and what thatposition entails. Up front, theoffensive line will be anchoredby Jeremy Brian, a 6-0, 205senior, returning at center.Dylan Hammit, a 5-9, 180junior, and Sy Donaldson, a5-10, 180 junior, will man theguard positions.Jeremy has started for ussince he was a freshman, sohes our leader up front,Hodgson said. Last year,Dylan played mostly defensiveend for us. This year, hesgoing to be going both ways.Hes definitely ready to go andthe same things goes for Sy,who will step up and go bothways also. Now is their time.Rotating at tight end will beTanner Barth, a 5-11, 180senior; Porter Salisbury, a5-11, 165 junior; and ColbySalisbury, a 5-9, 145 freshman. The defensive front line willbe anchored by Brian atnoseguard and Nordyke andHammit at defensive ends. The linebackers will includeP. As acoaching staff we believe thatas well.Rushton said the key to theseason will be discipline onthe court. Our girls have to learn tounderstand that they need tohave composure, there has tobe discipline, and they have tolearn to close out games, hesaid. As ahead coach and as players, you have higher expectations. Not winning a game last yearwas tough to take.It seems like we would playwith teams for the first halfand then things would get outof hand and we took ourlumps, explained Randel. Iplayed a ton of young kids andthey got a lot of experience.Hopefully, it motivated ourkids. I feel good about thisseason and where we are atright now compared to lastyear.Randel has 20 players outfor this years team with anumber of returning starters.Randel, who heads into hisfourth-year at the helm, willturn to Ashur Wiedrich, a 6-1,130 junior, to direct theoffense at quarterback. Also returning in thebackfield for the Cardinals willbe Dillan Kelley, a 5-11, 140junior, at tailback. Two newfaces playing fullback will beT.J. Trijullo, a 5-1, 150freshman, and GabeLongworth, a 5-9, 130freshman.The offensive line will beanchored by big Tate Mauser,a 6-4, 280 senior. Mauser willmove from center to a guardthis season.Randel is counting onMauser to provide theleadership for the Cardinals.Tate is a four-year starternow and was a part of thatgood football team we hadwhen he was a freshman, saidRandel. I think heunderstands what it takes toget there. Were going to leanon him to lead this team andgo with it.Taking over the snappingduties at center will be KolbyBrubacher, a 6-1, 260sophomore. Playing the otherguard position will be first-year player Zach Zamora, a5-10, 160 junior, or SterlingNoecker, a 5-10, 200sophomore.At the end positions will beCody Canfield, a 6-5, 180junior, and Keaton Sloan, a5-10, 150 senior. On the defensive side of thepigskin, Mauser will lead theway at noseguard. Playing atdefensive end will be Noecker,Zamora, and Sloan. Atlinebacker will be Trujillo,Kelley, and Canfield. The defensive backfield willinclude Wiedrich, Longworth, and Dallas Newman, a 5-10,160 sophomore. In our scrimmage atHoehne, we looked prettydecent, said Randel. Some ofour kids have gotten older andmatured. Its tough to playfootball with freshmen andsophomores. Weve got agood, big class of juniors withsome seniors mixed in. Youvegot to feel good about thematurity level of those kids. After two losing seasons, youre fighting that a little bittrying to figure out how to winagain. Hopefully, ourathleticism will help us winsome games and hopefully wewill be more physical than wewere last year. Were a little bitinexperienced but in a goodway. We have some juniorswho have really stepped uptheir game and I expect a lotout of them. I also have twofreshmen that are going seesome varsity playing time. So,its going to be a learningcurve for the first half of theseason but then Im expectinga big turn for this team. The Lady Cardinals will beled by 5-3 senior setterMelissa Navarrette.Melissa is probably one ofbest small school setters inthe state, praised Dunning. Also returning from lastyear will be Sara Turner, a5-10 junior middle hitter, andTausha Sniff, a 5-11 juniormiddle hitter. Cami Idler, a 5-8junior, will make the transitionfrom a back row player to anoutside hitter.Tyler Ann Clodfelter, asenior, returns in the back rowas a libero for the LadyCardinals. The two freshmenplayers looking to contributewill be Peighton Martin andJordan Isom, both hitters.Over the course of summervolleyball, you get to seewhere you stand and whereyou need to have players inpositions, explained Dunning. We made a lot of differentchanges and our girls aregoing to have to be ready tostep up and play some newpositions this year.McClave had only 12players out for the team lastyear and has 18 out this year.Dunning said theimprovement in numbers isgood because it allows theyounger players anopportunity to improve theirskills at the junior varsity levelwhich is important.Looking at some of thecompetition the LadyCardinals will face in theregion, Dunning said thenames are the same.Wiley is going to be prettymuch of a powerhouse and KitCarson is always a goodteam, she said. But its goingto be anybodys game and Ithink its wide open. Ofcourse, I think we always havethe edge but well have to waitand see. An elusiveslashing runner, Stafford willbe among the top backs in thisyears Arkansas ValleyConference. He will be out fora couple of weeks with aconcussion.Coach Tate will move juniorJonathan England toquarterback and Tyler Sharpto fullback. Both played a lotlast year and possess goodspeed. The real strength of theteam will be the line wherefour of the five starters return.Jordan Jones and ChaseMundell will anchor the endspots where they possessgood speed.Frank Fehr, 210-pounds,will anchor the middle of theline at center, while CullenSires will play one of the guardpositions. Sophomore ChazHebberd will be the lonenewcomer, but at 6-2,190-pounds he will bringplenty of size and strength. Most of the same nameswill dot the defensive roster aswell. This is the most kids wehave had out in a while, so weare very, very happy aboutthat, said Tate. I think thatwe will be stronger up front, much stronger across theboard, really. We have somegood young kids coming uptoo. Jonathan (England) did agood job of filling in for Lakenlast year when he was hurt atthe beginning of the season,so I am excited to watch himplay. We should be prettybalanced offensively. In the Arkansas ValleyConference, the front runnerswill be Springfield, Walsh, andGranada. Holly suffered majorlosses due to graduation whileWiley is still in a rebuildingprocess, and McClave looks torecover from a winless seasonlast year.Walsh will face a stiff testright off the bat in the 2011season opener when they hostthe defending state championHoehne Farmers on Saturday,Sept. 3.WALSH FOOTBALLSCHEDULESat., Sept. 3 HOEHNE, 7:00Fri., Sept. 9 PRIMERO, 7:00Fri., Sept. 16 at Goodwell,Ok., 6:30Fri., Sept. 23 HOLLY, 7:00Fri., Sept. 30 at McClave,7:00Fri., Oct. 7 GRANADA, 7:00Fri., Oct. 14 at Wiley, 7:00Fri., Oct. 21 at Springfield,7:00Sat., Oct. 29 Cross-Divisional GameSat., Nov. 5 StatepreliminariesSat., Nov. 12 StatequarterfinalsSat., Nov. 19 StatesemifinalsSat., Nov. 26 StatechampionshipSeniors leading the Walsh Eagles football team, l-r, Jonathan England, Frank Fehr, Ethan Sharpe, and Collin Sires.Good Luckand havea greatSeason toall areaTeams!8105211105 S. 4th Street Lamarwww.thetirestore.com719.336.9075 Fax719.336.9077Have a GreatSeasonWALSH EAGLESand run thecompetition over!HAVE AGREATSEASONWALSHEAGLES!EAGLES NEST103 Santa FeWalsh, Co. 81090719-324-5511Good LuckWALSHEAGLES !Have aGreat Season!GOWALSHEAGLES!AG SERVICES269 East Santa FeWalsh, CO.81090719-324-5737BEST OFLUCKWALSHEAGLES!TEETER IRRIGATION, INC.532 ColoradoWalsh Co. 81090719-324-5104GOWALSHEAGLES!MILLER SPECIALTYSALES517 ColoradoWalsh, Co. 81090719-324-5513Best Wishes toWALSH EAGLES!12122 LAMAR FALL SPORTS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2011 ...WALSHHIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALLPamela Cogburn Courtsey photoWALSH VOLLEYBALL TEAM: L-R, Alyssa Loflin, junior; Eva Fehr, sophomore;, Ashlyn Smith, sophomore; Mikayla Sharpe, freshman;Genna Bishop, senior, Desirae Dubois, sophomore; Heidi Cogburn, sophomore; Andi Hetrick, junior; Chyanne Tate, junior.Sophomores to carry hopesWALSH VOLLEYBALLSCHEDULEThu., Sept. 1 PLAINVIEW,3:00Thu., Sept. 8 at McClave,4:00Sat., Sept. 10 at Deerfield,10:30 CTThu., Sept. 15 KIM, 3:00Tue., Sept. 20 South Bacaat Campo, 4:30Fri., Sept. 23 HOLLY, 5:00Tue., Sept. 27 at Elkhart,Ks., 3;00 MTThu., Sept. 29 at Eads, 4:30Fri., Sept. 30 McCLAVE,5:00Sat., Oct. 1 WESKAN, KS.,Tue., Oct. 4 MANZANOLAand SPRINGFIELD, 3:00Fri., Oct. 7 GRANADA, 5:00Fri., Oct. 14 at Wiley, 5:00Tue., Oct. 18 at Springfield,4:00Sat., Oct. 22 CHEYENNEWELLS, 3:00Lady Eagles stand strong despite small numbersBy Dick PeecherThe Lamar LedgerNo stranger to Walsh athlet-ics, Alissa Renquist has as-sumed the reins for the WalshHigh School volleyball pro-gram.Formerly Alissa Bryant, shewas a standout for Walsh dur-ingthe1990sinbothvolley-ball andbasketball.
