The offense is bringing a new look this season, running a spread formation that looks to add some excitement and provide the Broncos with more opportunities to succeed against league opponents.

Head coach Greg Whitmore is a firm believer that the ground game is the way to win football games. Historically the Broncos have put that theory to the test and been more than successful running straight ahead and decimating opposing teams’ defensive lines.

Recently the Broncos haven’t been as successful

going straight ahead. The offensive line has been smaller, but quicker and what seems to work better for the team is formations and plays that spread out the defense and give the Broncos more options.

“The last couple of years we just could not pound the ball,” Whitmore said. “Once Colfax came down into the league we were really outsized. We took a look at things. I am still a run-first guy. I believe the team that rushes the ball wins more games.”

But last season Whitmore realized that the team’s success was coming from a different series of plays.

“Our most successful offensive plays were when we spread things out later in the season,” he said.

After tinkering with a spread offense late last fall, the Broncos got serious about it. During the off season the coaching staff opted to adopt the pistol offense, created by University of Nevada, Reno head coach Chris Ault in 2005.

The hometown coaches learned how to teach the offense and implemented it during summer football camp at Central Washington University. During last week’s jamboree the Broncos showed very little of their new offense, working to gradually implement the various aspects of the pistol without showing too much to their league opponents during the non-league season openers.

Lind/Ritzville-Sprague’s starting quarterback Jake Eichner is tenacious, quick and slippery. While the passing game isn’t his best attack, a versatile running game is. The pistol offense fits him well and gives him three options to consider from the instant a play begins to develop.

The Broncos’ quarterback will work from the shotgun. In fact Whitmore said it will be very rare for Eichner to line up under center this season.

Directly behind the Eichner will be a lone running back, Micah Brown.

“This is a true read offense,” Whitmore said.

The first option during any given play will be for Eichner to feed Brown. If that choice doesn’t look good based on Eichner’s view of the defense, he can keep the ball and run, which he has proven to be very successful at. The third option will be to resort to a passing attack.

It will be up to Eichner in typical scenarios, to quickly make a decision which of the three options he intends to use.

While Whitmore feels good about making a major change in the Broncos’ offense, he said it hasn’t been easy.

“It takes a lot of time and a lot of repetitions,” he said. “It’s hard to simulate in practice. But it really fits our personnel well. A lot of schools are going to it in the nation. I fought long and hard over this (decision). At camp I was really pleased. I think it gives us the best chance for success.”

Looking over the team’s roster, Whitmore said even with 40 players, there isn’t a lot of depth and the primary starters will see a lot of time on the field playing on offense and defense.

The team captains for this season are Eichner, Brown and Traven Smith.

Eichner will be leading the offensive attack. “If he doesn’t lead the team in rushing, he will be second. He’s

dangerous in this offense. But the other teams are going to know that too,” Whitmore said.

Brown will be a true threat from the backfield.

“He really started shining at the end of last year,” Whitmore said. “Then at camp he showed some wheels. And, he’s improved his vision.”

Slot receivers this year will be Cameron Kiesz and Chris Steinmetz. Both have worked from the running back position before and will be successful on quick hitches. Steinmetz will also line up at tight end for specific plays.

The wide receivers will be Jake Dewald and Jared Marecz.

“Those guys will also have to do a great job of blocking,” Whitmore said as this new offense will see ball carriers covering a lot of the field.

Zach Ellis will provide Brown with occasional rest breaks, coming in to work as a running back.

“This is new to him but he’s getting better and he’s pretty fast,” Whitmore said.

The offensive line will feature Brandon Gimmaka at left tackle, Izzy Valdovinos at left guard, Palmer Phillips at center, Smith at right guard and Brent Stromberger at right tackle.

Stromberger dislocated his kneecap during practice and will likely be out until the first league game. In his place is Jesse Miller from Sprague High School.

This is Phillips first year at center, but has already earned praise from Whitmore for doing a good job.

Backup for Eichner this season will be Dylan Hartz, who proved he has good hands, pulling in a touchdown pass during the jamboree.

If there is some depth for the Broncos it will show up on defense.

At the defensive end position, three players will get the duty: Steinmetz, Gimmaka and Stromberger.

The linebackers will be led by returning All Opponent first team member Smith at middle linebacker.

“He should have a great year,” Whitmore said.

The outside linebacker jobs will be held by Valdovinos, Phillips, Dewald and Miller.

Kiesz and Marecz will work the corners. Eichner and Brown will fill the safety positions.

“They’re also on our special teams. They have to be in great shape this year,” Whitmore said.

For the defense to be successful, the Broncos will need to capitalize on speed and agility.

“We’ve got to fly to the ball,” Whitmore said. “Hopefully there’ll be just a swarm of defenders around the ball. And hopefully we’ll create turnovers.”

Looking over the league opponents, Whitmore knows Colfax and Reardan will be prepared and tough to beat.

“The league championship goes through those two teams,” he said.

Colfax has the most experience returning to its roster. Reardan has one

of the fastest offensive threats among B schools in the form of Chase Bell who lines up all over the place, from quarterback to running back and receiver.

Liberty and Davenport, Whitmore said, are both showing signs of improvement. Kettle Falls is new to the league coming down from 1A. They have 50 kids turned out for the program this season.

“The league is a little tougher this year, a little more balanced,” Whitmore said.

Another change is the playoff scheme. The top four teams from District 7 will square off against the top four District 9 teams this year. The number one team from the Broncos District 7 will host the No. 4 team from District 9. The No. 2 team from District 7 will host the No. 3 team from District 9.

The crossover playoffs will help to ensure that the best 2B football teams from Eastern Washington advance to the state playoffs.

The Broncos hit the road Friday for a non-league outing against Warden.

Next Friday they return for the home opener and another non-league meeting with Kittitas.

Two returning varsity starters will anchor the Lady Broncos’ volleyball roster during a year where head coach Jennifer Gering-Kuch has implemented a rebuilding plan.

Senior Heather Whitmore will anchor the lineup as a middle hitter. Defensively the squad will find leadership in Libero Kaytlin Phillips. After that the roster features a number of names that have seen some varsity playing time or are completely new to the line up.

“Right now we’re trying to find out which girls fit which position best,” Gering-Kuch said. “We’re working on serve receive and finding out who’s the best passers. We’re going back to the basics of the rotation.”

With 11 players on the varsity roster, Gering-Kuch has assigned players to various roles, but those could change as the early season progresses and she determines who’s delivering the strongest performance in key positions.

Breaking down the roster by position, Gering-Kuch said the following players will start the season fulfilling these assignments. Lauren Gust and Jessica Hernandez will work as setters. Alexis Fowles and Phillips will be defensive specialists.

Tessa Mourning and Andrea Bennett will take on the roles of outside hitters. Auburn Schaefer and Chauntel White will be opposite hitters. Whitmore and Davis Killian center the action as middle hitters. Brittany Ste. Marie will be an opposite or outside hitter.

“We do have height in the middle, but we’re lacking some experience,” Gering-Kuch said of the middle hitters. “Heather has a good vertical (leap), which will help us out a bunch.”

Gust is new to the role of setter but appears to be learning the assignment quickly.

“She’s stepping up,” Gering-Kuch said. “She just lacks floor experience,”

To begin the season Hernandez will start in the setter position.

“Jessica is who we have to rely on this year. She’s quick and definitely a good leader,” Gering-Kuch said.

As returning Libero, Phillips brings experience and tenacity. “She’s already shown major improvement over last year,” Gering-Kuch noted.

Fowles played junior varsity and some varsity last season. Her coach expects her to contribute significantly to the defensive effort.

“She can read the floor well,” Gering-Kuch said.Bennett was a backside hitter last year, moving over

to outside hitter. “She’s a very strong hitter, very quick defensively,” Gering-Kuch said.

Mourning, a Sprague athlete, joins the Lady Broncos

for the first time.“Tessa was a varsity player for Sprague-Harrington,”

Gering-Kuch said. “Don’t let her size fool you; she can definitely place the ball and has a good swing. She’s good at reading where the holes are.”

Schaefer and White didn’t play volleyball last season, but will fill critical roles on the starting roster as opposite hitters.

“They are filling in nicely,” Gering-Kuch said. “They are very coachable and we can rely on them.”

League opponents will be challenging this year with Colfax, Reardan and Northwest Christian likely to vie for the top spots.

Gering-Kuch said Colfax lost some veteran players, but will continue to be tough. Reardan, she said, has some “phenomenal sophomores,” who will make the season interesting for their opponents.

An unknown will be Kettle Falls, as the team returns to B action from the 1A division.

“We’re probably in the middle right now, but we have the potential to be in the top of the league,” Gering-Kuch said.

Another new twist will be a series of three mini league tournaments that the Lady Broncos will experience this year. Those will feature three league opponents playing each other on the same day at one location. For Lind/Ritzville-Sprague the matches will be played in Davenport, St. George’s and Ritzville.

“They will count as league matches,” Gering-Kuch confirmed. “The downfall will be if you have a player

injured in the first match.”And the final twist of the year is the elimination

of district and regional volleyball tournaments. The Bi-County Volleyball Tournament will determine who advances to the state tournament this season.

“If you’re not ready in league play, then you’re done,” Gering-Kuch said.

Assistant coaches this year are Cari Galbreath and Brenda Hilzer.

The LaCrosse/Washtucna-Kahlotus Tigercats are starting the 2010 season as a young team, mostly filled with sophomores and punctuated with three veteran senior athletes.

This year, Tigercats fans will see changes on offense and defense, with new faces added to the roster.

“We’re young. We’ve got kids in new positions. But I think things are working out pretty well,” said head coach Jeff Nelson. “Kids seam to be excited about the program this year so we have some new faces.”

John Holdren will join the team as a running back and defensive end. “He’s a good player, is fast and good,” Nelson said.

Wyatt Weller, who will play at running back and linebacker, just moved to LaCrosse. Jacob Johnson will turn out for his first sport on the line.

The starting roster for regular season action will differ slightly from the season opener last week against Salmon River.

Nelson expects to see Jake Aune return to the field as the starting quarterback despite a shoulder injury last Thursday.

The team will be led by three seniors – Jacob Blankenship, Chris Wargo and Jeff Zimmer.

Blankenship will take position as an offensive lineman after being sidelined in Idaho due to missing practices because of a late harvest.

Zimmer will return as a tight end on offense and a linebacker on defense. “He should potentially be the best athlete in the league,” Nelson added.

Chris Wargo rounds out the senior squad at center and a linebacker for the defense.

Nelson noted, “There’s quite a bit of competition for

spots this year. If you’re not performing up to par, there are others who will take your spot.”

In a change from the 2009 offense lineup, Sawyer Hostetler will move from offensive lineman to running back. Caleb Hannas rejoins the team this year as a running back. He took last year off to recover from a back injury.

Sam Harder will take up position as a tight end. Austin Summers, who was a tight end, has moved to the line.

“We have two really good tight ends and (Austin) was the receiver so we just moved him,” Nelson said.

Nelson expects a lot from Harder and Hostetler. “I think we’ll have a good year. They are two sophomores who have been playing since eighth grade. They are really stepping up. Last year they were thrown in as freshmen. Even though they are sophomores, they don’t play like it.”

James Hopkins, a freshman, started last week on the offensive line in Blankenship’s absence.

“He’s a big, physical athlete,” Nelson said. “That’s going to give us depth down the road.”

Sophomore athlete Matt Stubbs will rotate between tight end and running back as a utility player.

Nelson looks to the changes in the lineup as a benefit to the team, having several players that can play multiple positions on offense and defense.

“Right at this point I think we’re going to be pretty good. I feel we’re just getting the kids in the correct spots. They learning quick… Now we have kids that can play multiple positions. They’re able to remember how to play positions they used to be in. That’s given us more depth.”

The team will rely on that depth and its speed rather than size. The average weight of the team is 160 pounds, topping out at 210 pounds.

“We are not an overly, physical, big team. But we’re not tiny,” Nelson commented. “We’ve got good, overall speed. If they don’t catch us early, watch out. But we’re going to earn everything we get.”

Coach Nelson has relented this year and will use a different defense that will take advantage of the players’ strengths.

“We’ve almost always been run first, but I think you need to be more balanced with the run especially since our best athletes are running backs… I’m just not used to throwing the ball.”

He’s changed the defensive around from what the team has run since 2002 to something that fits its personality – strong running backs and more depth with players who can fill multiple positions.

“The place we really have a lot of flexibility is our defensive line. We’re going to be a little bit deeper than in the past… the younger players are really stepping up.”

Last Friday, Jason Hulett joined the starting lineup as a defensive end. “He has been a tremendous surprise,” Nelson said. “He looks good.”

In the eight-man football arena, most teams are starting the 2010 season with similar rosters – about the same size and about the same amount of turnover.

“Everybody had about the same number of players, then all of a sudden Touchet has 47 players,” Nelson said, adding that the large roster gives the team a possible advantage.

Pomeroy, Garfield-Palouse and Liberty Christian dropped from 11-man to eight-man football this year. GP ended the 2009 season as an eight-man team after player injuries.

“Our league is really up for grabs. Its really balanced and right now I don’t see a powerhouse, a clear No. 1,” Nelson said. “Whoever has fewest injuries will probably win.”

The LaCrosse-Washtucna Lady Tigercats opened the 2010 season with a league outing on Wednesday against Garfield-Palouse, which rejoined the Southeast District 9 1B schools this year after two years in the 2B classification.

Tekoa-Oakesdale will also return to the 1B classification for volleyball only while Pomeroy will drop from 2B to 1B.

Next up for the Lady Tigercats is a tournament in Walla Walla this Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

With a roster of only 12 athletes, head coach Sandy Martin will employ a new strategy this year. The Lady Tigercats will not have separate varsity and junior varsity squads. Instead, the team will play as one unit.

Varsity games will begin at 5:30 p.m., with junior varsity games to follow.

“This is at my request so I can see how many girls I have available to play jayvee,” Martin said. “If I couldn’t do this, we would probably not have very many jayvee matches because I would have to ‘save’ the girls for varsity.”

The roster includes seven freshmen and sophomores, making this year’s team young in age and experience.

Three returning athletes will lead this year’s performance on the court. The lineup will include Taylor Burke, a LaCrosse junior, and Logan Harder, a Washtucna sophomore, as outside hitters. Anne Fleming takes position as the lead setter.

Shayla Sisk, a sophomore in the right outside hitting position, went to post season play but didn’t see much time on the court. Anna Roberts, also a sophomore, will play as a setter.

Senior athlete Teresa Casey will play at middle blocker.

The roster is completed by freshmen Kadie Whinery at middle blocker, Lindsey Miller at outside hitter, Haley Dorman at middle blocker and Jaime Hardy as a setter.

Rounding out the team are two exchange students. Julie Arruda will take position as a middle blocker while Millie Schorn will play at outside hitter.

“Being so young in age and experience, my main goal this season is to play tougher during the second half of our season,” Martin said. “We have a lot of work to do on basic skill development. The girls have already made huge strides, but I see much room for improvement.”

Many of the athletes on the 12-member team will see playing time on both teams. “I’m sure after the season gets underway, I will start to see who is best at what position and on what team,” Martin added.

Despite the young age of the team, Martin notes that the players have demonstrated determination in practice.

“I think the strength in our team will be our willingness and desire to go for every ball. We have

also been working hard on serving tough and not just consistent.”

Looking at league opponents, some have started the school year with new coaches – including Rosalia and Garfield-Palouse – and Martin is quick to note it’s difficult to predict what direction those teams will go.

“It’s hard to know how (GP) will be,” she said. “They haven’t been a powerhouse the last couple of years, but who knows.”

She did point out that Pomeroy, Tekoa-Oakesdale and GP will likely be strong opponents, and St. John-Endicott has some strong athletes returning to the court this year.

“I’m looking at Colton to be strong, as they didn’t lose much off of their third place team from last season,” Martin said. “And Touchet is always a wild card.”
