Sister sister I wonderhellipWhat do you wonder little brotherWhat do you wonderI wonder I wonder why things donrsquot fall upWhat do you think little brotherWhat do you think I think I thinkhellipTell me little brother what do you think
2
I thinkThat long ago things did fall upThat the sky was full of toffee wrappersAnd ice cream sticksThat stars slipped on banana peelsThat sometimes the moon cut her dainty feetOn bits of broken glassOr caught her trailing silver skirtsOn a rusty nail
3
I thinkThe old woman who lives in the skyGot so tired of cleaning the messThat she put a curse on the earthAnd things have fallen down ever since I think thatrsquos why things donrsquot fall upBecause the old woman in the skyWas fed up of living in a smelly pigstyIrsquom clever arenrsquot I sister
4
Oh yes you are little brotherAnd maybe yoursquore right toohellipBut in the books that I have readThat is not what they saidThen what did they say sisterWhat did they sayWhat do you think little brotherWhat do you think I think I thinkhellipTell me little brother what do you think
5
I thinkThat long ago things did fall upAnd drove Mother madFathers keysThe screw of her nose-studThe coins you were tossing from hand to hand (eventhough you knew Mother would scold if she knew)On your way back from the marketAll fell up and disappeared
6
Mother prayed to all her GodsOne of them took pity on herAnd things fell down and vanished no more Mother was happy (for a while)Now she complains about the mess on the floorI think thatrsquos why things donrsquot fall upAll thanks to a womanrsquos pleasFor fewer lost coins and screws and keysIrsquom clever arenrsquot I sister
7
I know you are little brotherAnd maybe yoursquore right toohellipBut in the books that I have readThat is not what they saidThen what did they say sisterWhat did they sayWhat do you think little brotherWhat do you think I think I thinkhellipTell me little brother what do you think
8
I thinkThere is a big greedy demon inside the earthAll day he waits his mouth a gaping holeSucking in mighty lungfuls of airhellipAnd nothing can fall upAs long as he keeps sucking in mdashEverything heads towards that greedy hole
9
I thinkMany things go right inMy marbles your hairclipsThe yummy laddoos Mother makesWhich I donrsquot eat and you donrsquot eatBut which disappear somehowI think that is why things donrsquot fall upBecause they hurtle earthwards to feedAn underground demonrsquos greedIrsquom clever arenrsquot I sister
10
Of course you are little brotherOf course you areAnd maybe yoursquore right toohellipBut in all the books that I have readThat is not what they saidThen what did they say sisterWhat did they say
11
Come here little brotherIrsquoll tell you what they saidThey said they saidhellipTell me what they said sisterTell me what they said
12
They saidThat everything just everythingIn the great big universePulls everything just everything elseIn the great big universeTowards itself
13
They saidThat BIG things can pull much harderAt small thingsThan small things can pullAt BIG thingsBut why donrsquot things fall up sisterWhy donrsquot things fall upBe patient little brother be patient now
14
They saidThe earth our homeIs a very BIG thingAnd all of usand everything else on earthmdashOur aeroplanes our blue whaleseven our oceansmdashAre very small things
15
And thats whyThe earth pulls us towards itselfMUCH MUCH harderThan we can pull the earthTowards usSO HARDThat we or our keys or our screwsor our coinsCannot escape float away disappearOr fall up
16
This GREAT force this GIGANTIC forceWith which the earth pulls usAll of usEven the penguins at the edge of the earthTowards itselfIs called GRA-VI-TYCan it be true sister can it be trueI canrsquot say little brother I canrsquot sayBut in all the books that I have readThat is what they said
17
FIND OUT MORE Why donrsquot things fall up About 350 years ago a famous English scientistcalled Isaac Newton was relaxing under an appletree when an apple fell and hit him SMACK on thehead Rubbing his sore head Newton wonderedwhy things never fell up Finally he came up with thetheory that the earth was like a giant magnet whichattracted everything around it with great force Hecalled this invisible force lsquogravityrsquo He also concluded that everything in the universeattracts everything else Bigger objects attract eachother with greater force than smaller ones Also asthe distance between two objects increases theforce of attraction between them decreases
18
Gravity however does not just make apples falldown from trees It also keeps the moon in orbitaround the earth and all the planets in orbit aroundthe sun The force of the earthrsquos gravity keeps themoon from flying away into space But why doesnrsquot the moon fall towards the earthBecause the moon has its own gravity with which itattracts the earth It is because the earthrsquos gravity isgreater that the moon goes around the earth If themoonrsquos was greater the earth would have gonearound the moon instead
19
Try this experiment You needA few rubber bandsA small rubber ballA length of string What to doPut the rubber bands around the ball in such a waythat they grip it tightly Tie the string to one of therubber bands around the ball Stand somewherewhere there is plenty of room and swing the ballaround your head If you swing it hard enough theball will go around your head in a horizontal circleNow let go of the string What happens The ballflies away in a straight line
20
Why does this happen
Because there is a tension force in the string whichkeeps the ball turning around your head When youlet go of the string the tension force disappears andthe ball goes flying Now imagine the ball is the moon and you are theearth The earths gravity is like the tension force inthe string If this tension force did not exist themoon would fly away into space
