As the Father loves me, so I also love you!

I played High School football for St. Michael Albertville High School. Although our Director of Maintenance, Pat Hinnenkamp, and the team he coached, Totino Grace Eagles, ended my season by defeating us in the playoffs my junior and senior year, I have a lot of good memo-ries. I was not the most aggressive player on the field or hardest hitter, but I served as the chaplain for the football team and led our team prayer before the game. I was able to use the gifts God gave me to build up the team. St. Michael Albertville Football Program is still

known for praying after the football games with the other teams. I played linebacker so my number was 52. I like to pronounce it five-two rather than fifty-two. Five-two re-minds us of the Gospel passage this weekend where the boy has 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Jesus asks the apostles what resources they have, and they give everything they have, which they themselves did not even bring! Jesus is able to use this gift to meet the needs of the people. He blesses it thus able to fulfill the need. God takes what we bring him, and he uses it to build up his kingdom. Sometimes we feel that what we have or are is inadequate. The devil works hard to make us believe those lies that lead to despair and discouragement. However, Jesus comes to show us that we are lovable and that with HIS help and grace, we are adequate, and more than that, we can thrive! Bring Jesus what you have and know that he is there to receive your offering and perfect it. He desires to work with you, in you and through you as you cooperate with his grace. Even with our brokenness and inadequacies, God the Father works through us to bring about his plan of salvation for the whole world. Where do you feel inadequate in your own life? Maybe in your work or your family or another relation-ship? Know that Jesus loves you there and wants to reassure you that with him, you can do all things. He is the one who you can depend on for strength and grace. He is the one who will lead to life in abun-dance. Bring him what you have, surrender it to him, and watch him do amazing things through you! This weekend we say goodbye to Sister Leonarda, one of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines. Sister Leonarda along with Sr. Ermie, who serves at Little Sisters of the Poor in St. Paul, founded the convent here in New Brighton in 2019. She has worked in the school for the past two years as well as helped prepare our students for the Sacraments. Thank you, Sr. Leonarda for your service and we wish you well as you go to serve in Texas. Sr. Ruth with be coming to serve in our school and helping in strengthening our Catholic formation opportunities. For those who do not receive the weekly email, below is my email from Thursday, July 15th: “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you,” says the Lord, “plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.” These words from Prophet Jeremiah have given me hope in the face of trial and uncertainty. I share them with you as well as wait for another associate pastor. The diocese has informed me that they are unsure of when they would be able to assign me another associate pastor. In the interim, we are having internal discussions about shifting duties to allow me to be more available for the pastoral needs of the parish. While I appreciate people acknowledging that my calendar is very full, I do not want you to think that I am too busy for you. I am here to serve your spiritual needs and that is what we are working towards. We are shifting some administrative duties off my plate and onto other staff. Many parishioners have expressed a willingness to help where needed. My response is please step up to help when you see requests in the bulletin or email. For example, we need help planning for FallFest, or we need help with liturgical ministries, like lead ushers or lead Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at our weekend Masses. We need help with new member welcome and getting new pa-rishioners plugged into our parish. We need more parishioners willing to serve on the commissions that assist our staff with the direction of the parish. Please contact Rita Arndorfer at the parish office to find out more about our volunteer opportunities. Although we only have one priest, we can let our light continue to shine brightly and even grow when we come togeth-er. Jesus invited his apostles and disciples to share in his ministry and I invite you to share in mine. Working together we can build up the kingdom of God in New Brighton and beyond!

From The Pastor: Fr. Paul Shovelain

Sister 's Clarinda's Fall Scripture “Life Eternal & And the Life of the World to Come.”

Begins on September 1 at 9:30 AM in room 206 Our study this Fall is from a sentence from our Creed; “And the Life of the World to Come.” What are you thinking when you speak the line in the Creed “And the Life of the World to Come"? What does this statement mean? The more years we have spent on this earth, the more our thoughts turn to: what is it like there? who will be there? and what do I know about Heaven? An-other important question is how it relates to the link between Baptism and Eucharist and my heavenly exist-ence. Another thought is what I had heard growing up in my faith. What is it about white gowns, wings, musical instruments, especially the harp and my relations to heaven? Our Fall Scripture series helps us to turn to the Bible and dig out what we have in a variety of texts, both the Old and the New Testaments. We will focus most on what is heaven. Register online at www.stjohnnb.com For assistance in registering, please see Thomas in the parish office. Coming for our Winter Scripture ……” The Angel Series”.

Cathedral Heritage Foundation News

Guided tours have restarted weekdays at 1 p.m., Tuesday - Friday. Please share the good news with your friends and family and out-of-town guests. Where else can you see world-class mosaics, frescoes, and sculptures all woven into a story that shares the Cathedral's history and mean-ing? It's a treasure we enjoy sharing. Also, with the re-opening of the Cathedral, we would welcome additional volunteers to sit in the museum. Contact [email protected] for more details.

A new museum exhibit coming soon: Whispers from the Heavens

Artistic and historic links between the Vatican and the Cathedral of Saint Paul

Whispers from the Heavens will open in the early fall of 2021 under the direction of Cathedral Archivist Marilyn Burnett. The exhibit’s focal point will be up-close images of the masterpieces in the Sistine Chapel shared for the first time in a limited release trilogy of books published by Callaway in coordination with the Vatican Museum. The Cathedral received one of 600 sets available in Eng-lish and 1,999 copies for the world. The work will never be reprinted. Callaway will donate a portion of the pro-ceeds from sales back to the Vatican Museums for its ongoing conservation program. Cathedral Rector, Fr. John Ubel, received a set as a gift from a local benefac-tor. A giant magnum opus For the very first time, we can see the work of Michelan-gelo and his fellow Renaissance artists, as they would have seen their paintings on the ceiling of the chapel, rather than from the floor, sixty feet below. The giant, 24 x 17 inch, 822-page trilogy gives us an extreme close-up of the artists’ precise colors and textures down to individual brush strokes. Whispers from the Heavens will explore additional con-nections between the Cathedral of Saint Paul and the Vatican. · Emmanuel Masqueray’s disclosure that Michelangelo’s design of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome was an inspiration for his design of the Cathedral · Our Pieta, one of only eight exact replicas’ (within 1/8” of Michelangelo’s original) released by the Vatican Mu-seum. · Historical letters, blessings, and accolades from various Popes, official certifications from the Vatican, and the many clergy and Cardinals (some later Popes) who visit-ed the Cathedral and who participated in the National Eucharistic Congress hosted by Archbishop Murray in 1958. · Additional Vatican inspiration can be seen in the Cathe-dral frescos and paintings by Minnesota artist Mark Balma who received his fresco training in Italy. The fall exhibit will be on view in the Cathedral’s muse-um, located on the lower level.

We are hosting a Missionary from CFIC the weekend of July 31/August 1. Your generous support will change lives.

CFIC CHILDREN’S MISSION

If you are wondering what CFIC is – it is Latin acronym for the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception founded by Blessed Luigi Maria Monti in Rome, Italy in the year 1857, three years after the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Today after 164 years, the Congregation has extended its branches to 23 countries in dif-ferent parts of the world. In North America the members of the order are rendering their services in Canada, United States and Mexico. The members of the congregation both priests and lay religious dedicate themselves to the care of the sick, in the caring and education of orphaned, poor, and abandoned children. At least some of you might have watched the famous Holly-wood movie “Lion” - though the story seem some exaggerated there is lot of truth in it. It is the fact that there are mil-lions of less fortunate children still struggling for their daily survival in the world. They don’t have so many big dreams, but they dream for good education and for their one and only daily meal; suffering and their hardships the congregation feels that it is very significant and essential to show them the rays of hope in their lives. Through several caring centers in different countries, the congregation takes care of thousands of children who either physically or mentally challenged, poor, abandoned or orphaned. The most where caring centers are in India, the Philippines, South Korea, Cameron, Nige-ria and the democratic republic of Congo, Poland, Peru, Brazil and Argentina. At present, the need has become so high, due to the outbreak of the pandemic, Covid-19. Several hundreds of children have lost their both parents and are orphaned. This is very true especially in India for the last few months as the covid cases and number of deaths were skyrocketing. It is the high time to bring them hope and support. We know we are do-ing very little; of course, we have manpower and enthusiasm to do more for these millions of children- the future of hu-manity. But finance always plays a challenge. Unfortunately, we don’t get much support from the government, for we are always inspired by the great generosity of many people like you. Whenever you do anything for this great mission you are helping to make the better life possible for this less privileged and the most neglected children in society. Your generosity allows us to help thousand more children who are in need of our help and support. Your generous con-tribution and support for these children’s missions is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated and be a sure of these lit-tle innocent children’s prayer support. Thanks and God’s blessing to all.
