In the beginningFamilies Together originated out of

the need to serve families experiencing homelessness.

While our Women in Transition program was thriving, we also

wanted to serve families.

Construction costs were a component of the $8M More Than A Roof campaign launched in 2006. Families Together was the highlight of this campaign.

Christ Episcopal Church first inspired support for Families Together with a $333,000 donation.

Along with a significant corporate gift, Duke Energy consulted with YWCA to build energy-efficient units.

Many generous corporations, foundations and individuals contributed to our campaign. These donors are recognized throughout our campus as a reminder to all of us that community support was far and wide.

Families Together staff conducted focus groups to obtain feedback from residents of shelters, which helped inform the program design.

Homeless Services Network agencies referred families to YWCA for interviews.

Staff created a registry with Target stores, allowing donors to order household goods for families. This registry still exists to welcome new families.

Staff launched supportive services/case management with families approved for Families Together in early 2008 and, awaiting housing completion, began family development plans and budgeting curriculum with families.

All ten units were occupied by June 2008.

Anne Pipkin and Sarah Belk Gambrell cut the ribbon at the Grand Opening of Families Together in 2008.

Families Together units won a Housing NC Award in 2009. The awards recognize outstanding affordable properties that can serve as models for other communities.

Since Opening...

YWCA has housed a total of 40 families.

178 individuals ranging in age (at entry) from newborns to 49 years have been served.

19 families moved from YWCA into permanent housing. 10 families are currently living on campus in the program.

80 percent of the 19 families that moved sustained permanent housing after six months.

77 percent of graduate families have sustained permanent housing over a year’s time.

Since the YWCA partnered with the Charlotte Housing Authority in 2009, families have graduated with the benefit of Section 8 Choice Vouchers.

YWCA familiesFamilies Together participants

have access to services including: case management;

computer instruction; education and job training programs; career

counseling; financial planning services; volunteer facilitated

social activities; afterschool care and the YWCA fitness facility. Each family can remain in the

program for up to two years.
