It took seven years to complete it, but the dream of its construction started further back. It was not Solomon’s dream, but David’s to build a “House for the Lord.” However, even before that, Israel as a whole had longed to be in the promised land. Their history of wandering in the desert had required the tabernacle be a mobile home for the Ark of the Covenant and representation of God’s presence with His people. Now the Ark was brought to a permanent place with great ceremony and celebration. o 1Kings 8:54‐61 o Solomon, in this benediction to his prayer over Israel, recognized and remembered God’s faithfulness to his people. He prayed for God’s continued presence and recognized the importance and effects of His presence. (v.57‐59) He prayed that all peoples everywhere would know the one and only God. (v.60) He prayed that Israel would remain faithful to the Lord forever. (v.61) o It is clear, however, that the completion of the temple is not the completion of God’s requirements. It is really only setting the stage for what God truly desires and requires of His people ‐ exclusive worship. Bottom line: God desires and requires exclusive worship. Questions: What are some of the important effects Solomon recognizes come from God’s presence with His people? How have you recognized God’s presence throughout your life? What are you doing now to continue to practice faithfulness? What actions can you take to encourage yourself and others to maintain a faithful heart in the future? PRAY o Read Window on the World, pg. 64‐65 Gonds (India) o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “Exalted/Yaweh” o This week our family worship song is “Exalated/Yaweh”. We learn from the Old Testament that “Yahweh” is the name for God in Hebrew. This song is such a beautiful declaration of how amazing our God is. To Him belongs all honor and glory and praise. In 1 Kings 8, we see a picture of Yahweh’s desire for our hearts to be fully committed to Him and for all people of the earth to know that the Lord is God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, God gives us His Spirit and gives us a new heart, so that we can worship Him in Spirit and be sealed with the hope that one day we will enjoy Him forever in eternity, where we will be made perfect, free from all sin and all suffering! MEMORIZE o 1 Kings 8:61 Let your heart therefore be wholly true to the Lord our God, walking in his statutes and keeping his commandments, as at this day.
