    Hints and tips

    Choice of timberWe recommend multi-layer 18mm Birch plywood as the bestmaterial to withstand the rigours of intensive life on the roador likely exposure to damp conditions. Alternatively, 18mmMedium Density Fibreboard (MDF) offers good acousticproperties with the advantage of being less expensive

    (although heavier ), and may be used where the cabinet willbe permanently installed in a dry environment. Bothmaterials accept any type of paint finish extremely well.

    Construction techniqueAll joints should be totally airtight, liberally glued with PVAadhesive and screwed at 200mm (8) centres with 4.2mm or4.8mm (No.8 or No.10) x 50 mm (2) self-tapping screws.The bracing panels are designed to ensure rigidity ofconstruction, making the cabinet as free as possible frompanel resonances caused by the internal forces generatedby the loudspeaker drive unit and resulting in unwantedvibration and colouration of the sound. Again, these jointsshould be glued and screwed using the same method.

    PortingThe length of the ports as specified in the drawing should bestrictly adhered to. The cut-out size for the port is 100mm(4). Plastic drainpipe is ideal for this task, but as there couldbe slight variations in pipe diameter we suggest the cut-outis made after purchasing. The port when fitted should beairtight, which can be achieved by sealing the joint withsilicone sealant or polyurethane mastic.

    Acoustic insulationTo aid panel damping and prevent internal reflections andstanding waves, all internal panels of the cabinet ( with theexception of the front baffle ) should be lagged withacoustically absorptive material. We recommend the use of

    acoustic foam wadding, glassfibre insulation or rubbercarpet underlay which should be glued, stapled or tacked tothe inside of the cabinet, taking care to ensure that porttubes are not obstructed.

    Crossover networkThis cabinet is designed as a passive unit, and adequateexternal signal processing arrangements should be made tofilter out high-frequency signals.

    Internal wiringWiring should be kept away from moving loudspeaker partsand fastened to internal panelling to avoid buzzing. Weencourage the use of colour coded wiring to identify polarity(red for +ve and black for -ve), and recommend carrying outa phase check before first using the cabinet. This isachieved by applying the positive terminal of a battery to thepositive cabinet input which should result in the speakercone moving forwards if in phase (or by using a dedicatedpolarity checker).

    Drive unit fixingThe drive unit should be front mounted to the baffle usingT-nuts and fixing bolts, and is supplied with a length of selfadhesive foam sealing strip which should be fitted aroundthe front edge of the speaker cut-outs to guarantee airtightconditions.

    Loudspeaker protectionThe exposed front of all speaker drive units is of coursevulnerable to damage, necessitating some means ofprotection which must be robust but acoustically transpareCloth/foam type grilles are feasible for fixed cabinets, but ametal mesh grille is certainly the preferred and superioroption. It is recommended that a foam gasket material isused between the wooden cabinet and the metal grille toprevent any unwanted resonances.

    Cabinet hardwareHandles, terminal panels, protective corners, pole mountinaccessories etc. are readily available from many differentsources.Fane Acoustics will be pleased to recommend approvedsuppliers of all associated components.

    Cabinet finishingCabinet finishing is largely a matter of personal preferenceand as such, detail of this is omitted from the drawing.Generally cabinets are either painted or covered in carpet vinyl material. If a carpet material is chosen it isrecommended that a very dense tight pile type is used andthat metal corner protectors are fitted. Corner protectors whave a defined radius that the edges of the cabinet shouldbe finished to. The cabinet shown on the first page of thisdocument has all the external edges routed with a 13mmradius and coated in a hard wearing textured epoxy paint.

    Two steel carrying handles have been fitted. There arevarious types of handles and terminal panels available andagain details of these have been omitted. It is recommendethat these be purchased and cutouts be made in anappropriate position in the panels before final build. Beaware that handles and terminals are not necessarily airtigwhich will be detrimental to performance but can be easilyremedied using a silicone sealant or polyurethane mastic tseal all joints.

    Warning!There are safety regulations regarding the installation ofloudspeaker systems. This document is intended as a guidto construct a suitable acoustic enclosure for ourcomponents. Fane Acoustics can hold no responsibility forthe structural integrity of the finished system. The system wbe no stronger than the material it is made from and the

    joinery techniques used to assemble it. Suspending thefinished system will require additional hanging hardware.There are companies who specialise in the manufacture acorrect use of this hardware. They are experts and must beconsulted if overhead suspension of the finished system isintended.
