Last week, the Gleeson College Community had an opportunity to
look back and acknowledge the Graduating Class of 2016.
The students were first farewelled by our whole school cohort in a
smaller gathering on Wednesday, where all students were presented to the community. This celebration is always enjoyable as we present photos of the students, comparing
their Year 8 self to their current photo - the changes often amuse the audience and it was wonderful to see how much our Year 12’s have grown!
After the presentation and an enthusiastic final rendition of our
College Song ‘With One Heart’, staff joined the Year 12’s in Mary’s Garden
for a shared lunch. This time is so valuable to staff and students, as it provides an opportunity to share a meal and also offers a chance for individual farewells and photos.
On Thursday night, we gathered together to celebrate our Class of
2016 with parents and families. The Year 12 Farewell Mass is an
important Eucharistic celebration shared in our community that is followed by individual students
being acknowledged for their efforts and achievements at the College

Year 12 Class of 2016Last week we celebrated a number of key events as the beginning of the farewell to our Year 12 Class of 2016. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the Final Farewell Mass and Awards Presentation on Thursday evening. Our Year 12 students conducted themselves impeccably in their final week at school, and they are acutely aware that the next few weeks of final assessments and examinations are of paramount importance. We continue to keep the Year 12 students in our thoughts and prayers during this time, and we look forward to celebrating the end of their secondary school journey at their Graduation at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 29 November.
Regional MassOn Wednesday, Gleeson College hosted the annual Regional Mass with Year 6 and 7 students from St Francis Xavier’s, Our Lady of Hope and Saint David’s Primary Schools; joining Gleeson Year 8 and 9 students. Following the Mass all the students participated in the Junior
Relay for Life, continuing our support of the Cancer Council SA. It was a great day of celebration that further strengthened the close relationship that exists between our schools that comprise the Tea Tree Gully Catholic community. With the huge amount of work that continues as we transition Year 7 to Gleeson College from 2018, the fact our four schools have such a strong and respectful relationship will enable us to guarantee a successful transition for young people in our area.
Combined Board DinnerOn Wednesday evening we held our annual Combined Board Dinner. At this gathering all of the Board Members from Gleeson College, Pedare Christian College and Golden Grove High School share a meal. Once again this event reinforced the unique nature of our campus, and the wonderful opportunities that it presents to the students that attend. I take this opportunity to again thank the Gleeson College Board for their unwavering support of our College and their continued stewardship of the vision of our school.
ListeningI was taken by a story that Pope Francis outlined in his general weekly audience in
St Peter’s square last week. He spoke of a change of heart of a taxi driver who initially refused a ride to a woman who wanted to bring along a migrant who the taxi driver said was ‘smelly’. The Pope explained that the refugee wanted to cross the Holy door of St Peter’s Basilica and the woman wanted to take him by taxi because he was without shoes and could not walk there. The taxi driver initially refused to let them in, claiming that the migrant smelled. However after he listened to the migrant’s story, how he had fled war and famine, he drove them to their destination for free, thanking the woman because “you made me listen to a story that changed my heart.” “All together, we are a great force to support those who have lost homeland, family, work and dignity,” the Pope said.
This story challenges us to look at our own lives and judgments that we make about others. Sometimes we don’t even get to the point whereby we listen to another’s story because we already have preconceived ideas and judgments about them. Pope Francis challenges us to deeply listen.

YEAR 12 FAREWELL MASS > ‘Walk in the Shadow of The Cross’
during their five years of secondary education. It was great to see the
pride on our families faces when the students were called up to the stage
to receive awards.
While we understand the students still have a significant amount of work to complete and exams to
prepare for, our thoughts and prayers are with them in support at these times. We are grateful for their
contributions over the years and look forward to our final gathering
with the students at the Year 12 Graduation Dinner later this month.

ADVICE TO YEAR 10 STUDENTS > Start Your Research Project NOW!
Year 10 students attended a Mini Expo and Information Presentation all about the Research Project (RP) this week and began brainstorming ideas for their topic. They also reviewed their research skills and identified gaps in their knowledge, as well as their strengths. Teachers will use this information to plan learning activities for their 2017 Research Project classes.
Year 11 students who are currently doing RP presented samples of their own Folios and Outcomes to inspire their peers and to provide some timely words of advice. The take home message from this session was to start the Research Project NOW! Time management can be an issue for students when they are challenged to plan, organise and carry out their RP, so parental support and encouragement can make a huge difference to the success of their semester.
There are many tasks Year 10 students can do now to get a head start on their Research Project:
Generate ideas: • identifying interests, skills and
abilities; • brainstorming, mind maps, lotus
diagrams;• discussing possible topics and
questions with friends, family and teachers.
Conduct preliminary research before the subject begins: • read as much as you can about your
topic;• search Google Scholar for research
that has already been done on your topic;
• watch documentaries;• visit places that are connected
to your topic such as museums, libraries, art galleries, etc;
• talk to people you know who may have some knowledge or expertise to share.
Plan research processes: • keep track of your preliminary
research by keeping a research journal;
• think about the question you want to ask and what the best ways to find or create information may be;
• contact people in your networks now to get them on board to help you by agreeing to be interviewed, to
complete surveys or questionnaires, or to allow you to visit their workplace if it is connected to your research.
Below are samples of questions currently under investigation by Year 11 students:
• What will be the economic effects of building a nuclear power plant in South Australia?
• What are the positive and negative impacts of technology on the first five years of childhood development?
• How has the Magna Carta shaped the modern legal system used in Western cultures today?
• Does hosting a World Cup leave countries with too big a financial burden?
• How does respite foster care impact the lives of children ‘at risk’?
• What is the theory behind “The Big Crunch”?
• What effect does dementia have on the sufferer and people closely connected?
• How can volunteering in a third world country improve an individual’s wellbeing and mental health?
• How does culture influence cuisines in Australia?
• What is the evidence that shows putting orcas into captivity is bad for their health and mental state?
• What are the major mental health issues that affect teenage boys?
• How do children learn to read in
today’s technological world?• What are the effects of personal
assistance dogs on those with physical and/or mental limitations?
• How to successfully create an engaging/inspiring YouTube video
• Is it possible for humans to live on Mars?
• How could things have been different on the farm if my grandfather had the advanced technology & machinery available today?
• How does weather affect an athlete’s performance?
• How does the beauty industry influence the perception of beauty in western society?
• How to tell an untold story through YouTube? What role does YouTube play in telling previously untold stories?
• How does Diabetes affect a teenager’s life?
• How would my family’s history be different if my Grandad was born in Nazi Germany two or three years earlier?

YEAR 9 HOME ECONOMICS > Unpacking Australian Cooking Shows
The Year 9 Home Economic Class is currently working on their ‘Cooking Show’ unit, unpacking Australian cooking shows!
This week the students made a zucchini slice recipe by Masterchef’s winner in the first season, Julie Goodwin. As a pre-service teacher doing my second placement at Gleeson College, it has been a real joy getting to know the students and working with them.

> Zucchini Slice RecipeIngredients• 2 zucchinis, grated• 1 large onion, finely chopped• 3 rashers of bacon, finely chopped• 1 cup self-raising flour• ½ cup of oil• 6 eggs• salt & pepper to taste
Method1. Preheat oven to 170°C. Grease & line
a non-stick lamington tin.2. Combine zucchini, onion, bacon, flour
& cheese in a large bowl. Add oil and lightly beaten eggs, & mix. Season with a little salt & pepper. Pour into lamington tin.
3. Bake for 35-40 mins until golden & set. Cool slightly before cutting.
Note: The vegetables can be substituted or added to – try corn kernels, grated carrot, shallots, shredded beans, & leave out the bacon for a vegetarian version.
GLEESON GIRLS SHINE @ SCHOOL AEROBICS DANCE STAR COMPETITION

Congratulations to Gleeson students Liam Andijanto (10 DSVAU) and
Cooper Nunn (9 MMMAH) who have been selected in the Adelaide United Youth Reserve Team for 2017, to play in the National Premier League (NPL)
SA Reserve Division next year.
This is an amazing achievement for Liam and Cooper, especially as both boys are just 15 years old, and is a
true testament to the hard work and commitment they have put in as part
of SA’s National Training Centre (NTC) Team this year
Well done boys and all the best for a great 2017 season with the Reds!!

ADELAIDE UNITED FC YOUTH RESERVE TEAMCALLUP FOR YOUNG GUNS LIAM & COOPER!
Last Sunday our talented Gleeson dancers competed at the Spring Edition of the School Aerobics
Dance Star Competition, held at the Black Box Theatre, Wynn Vale.
Gleeson Year 8 students were excited about the challenge of choreographing and adapting
routines they had been performing at our Primary School Roadshows
for this State-wide event. We entered a team in the Secondary Hip Hop Small Team section and won first place and a gold medal
dancing to a ‘Work’ megamix, featuring songs by Britney, Rihanna, Fifth Harmony, Beyonce, Iggy, Nicki,
Ciara, Missy, JLo and 2NE1. The students “worked” hard during
their lunchtimes to learn and adapt choreography in only two weeks and
performed with great energy and professionalism.
Our students also competed in the Open Genre Duo and Trio sections,
also choreographing their own dances during lunchtimes. Brea Hurst (8 DMCUR), Chelsea Rulla (8 MMMIT) and Phoebe Surman (8 MMSCH) created a dance to Christina Perry’s “Human” and
won a bronze medal in this tightly-contested section. Rochelle Bragg
(8 FMHAU) and Shayla Proud (8 MMSCH) choreographed an emotional lyrical dance to The
Band Perry’s song “If I Die Young”, and Chelsea Schwarz (8 HMGIL)
performed a moving piece to Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down”.
Many of these students had never entered a dance competition before
and have commented that it was a valuable learning experience, particularly the workshop in the
morning to highlight techniques and features of their dancing that the
judges are focussing on.
The Gleeson Dancers are celebrating their success and looking forward to using this experience for a stronger,
more competitive edge next year!

Youth Baseball Championships.
The U18 National Championships, held at Blacktown International
Sports Park (NSW) from January 6-15, and will see the best junior
baseballers from around Australia take to the field.
We congratulate and commend both John and Brayden on this
outstanding sporting achievement and wish them the best of luck for a successful Championship campaign!
