What is mental health?

It’s an expression we use every day, so it might surprise you that the term ‘mental health’ is frequently misunderstood.

‘Mental health’ is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions – such

as depression, anxiety conditions, schizophrenia, and others.

According to the World Health Organization, however, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can

cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

So rather than being about ‘what’s the problem?’ it’s really about

‘what’s going well?'

OUTWARD BOUND—SECOND HAND CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT SALE

Oakhill College will be holding a Second-Hand OUTWARD BOUND Clothing and Equipment Sale on

Thursday 20th October (Week 2 of Term 4) in the Centenary Sports Centre Foyer

between 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

This will provide an opportunity for our present Year 11 students and parents to be able to sell appropriate clothing and equipment to our current Year 10 cohort, as they will be going on their Outward Bound expedition at the end of Term 4. It is an expectation that all gear offered for sale would be clean. Oakhill College will not be involved in the actual transaction between buyers and sellers. Oakhill College has no control over and does not guarantee the quality

of items sold. Oakhill College is providing an event for the sale of Outward Bound clothing and equipment. A form indicating interest in participation in this sale was emailed to all Year 11 students and parents. Please return this completed form to Mr. Burke’s office by Tuesday 18th October. Alternatively return the form via email to [email protected]. This will assist in allocating space for sellers in the CSC foyer. On the day of the sale Year 11 students will be able to leave the items they wish to sell in the room between the Student Coordinators' office if they do not want to keep items in their bags all day. This room will be locked for security purposes. Please ensure all items can clearly be identified as belonging to a student to sell. All items must also be clearly priced. If you have any questions regarding this second hand sale please do not hesitate to contact Brian Burke at the College at [email protected] or on the College number 9899 2288. Kind regards Mr Brian Burke Acting Student Coordinator, Years 9 and 10

along with family and friends at the presentation. Students are to wear their tennis playing uniform and bring their racquets. Parents are encouraged to come along and show their tennis skills and have a hit with the boys. Student achievements I mentioned the achievements of Kieren Briggs (Year 11) at the ISA Athletics Carnival where he broke the long-standing shot put record with a fantastic throw. From this, Kieren went to the NSWCIS Carnival and launched his shot put even further than his ISA record to win Gold. To accompany his shot put gold medal, he won silver in the javelin before winning another gold medal in the discus. Well done Kieren. Upcoming events in Oakhill Sport

YEAR 7 ABORIGINAL JOURNEY

For the next four weeks, the library will be showcasing a display of Year 7 Aboriginal Journey Story artworks. Students were tasked with writing an emotional journey story that they had been on. They then had to represent this journey through the creation of a set of symbols, which were brought together to create an interesting and aesthetically pleasing artwork. Students were inspired by the Western Desert symbols of Arnhem Land and the Papunya Tula artists of the Western Desert. Students had an enjoyable time learning about Aboriginal culture and, with the help of Mrs Isaacs and Brother Michael, it was brought alive for the students. The students have produced some wonderful artworks, that incorporate their own journey story with the traditions of Aboriginal art. If you would like to see some beautiful, bright and colourful artworks, head to the Library.
