COMMUNITY EDUCAT IONFARIBAULT PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Greetings from Anne Marie LelandCommunity Education Director

It has been a beautiful and activity-filled summer for Faribault Community Education participants. Youth learned how to swim or drive, while others played tennis or sewed their own summer dresses for the first time. Adults discovered their inner artist while having fun with their friends, took time to learn about human energy systems or enhanced their home finance organization skills. As we start another school year and students head back to classrooms, make sure to check out all of the lifelong learning opportunities that are available through Faribault Community Education. There is truly something for everyone.

ECFE FALL ‘15 CLASSES AT-A-GLANCE

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten. A typical ECFE class, includes:

1. Parent-Child Interaction Time where parent and child together enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate learning activities.

2. Parent Education Time for relevant, effective education and support with a group facilitator that encourages a healthy environment for the growth and development of families.

3. Children’s Activity Time During parent education time, children explore, gain independence, and practice social skills while under the supervision of a licensed children’s teacher and a paraprofessional.

All ECFE classes are taught by licensed early childhood teachers and parent educators to provide the quality education parents are looking for.

We understand the importance of the early years and recognize that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. We offer parents hands-on learning experiences that will nourish a lifetime of teachable moments. Together, parents and children, newborn to kindergarten age, participate in activities and experiences that foster each child’s social-emotional, cognitive, physical, and language/communication skills.

EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION

“Help Me Grow” Faribault Public School’s concern for children doesn’t begin in kindergarten and end at graduation. Our teachers are on hand to work with children who need additional developmental and educational help from birth through age 21. The program that is designed to meet the developmental needs of our youngest learners is the Early Childhood Special Education Program (ECSE). Eligible children are those with developmental delays or with a certain diagnosed physical or mental condition or disorder that results in a delay.

Infant and Toddler Intervention provides special services and supports for eligible children birth though age two and their families. Eligible children are those with developmental delays or with a certain diagnosed physical or mental condition or disorder that results in a delay.Preschool Special Education is for children from age three until they begin kindergarten with developmental delays or other disabilities, and who are experiencing challenges in their learning and development.

Early InterventionEarly Intervention services for children birth to three years old are provided within the child’s natural environments. These “Routines-Based Interventions” are based on the child’s daily likes and are guided by your family’s priorities. ECSE teachers will provide coaching to parents and caregivers to help promote a child’s development. Families are coached in strategies to help improve developmental areas such as cognition and communication, as well as social, motor, and self-help skills.

Preschool Special EducationOur program strives to help young children interact successfully with friends and family at home, in the community, and at school. To achieve this goal, the ECSE staff work as partners with the parents and teachers. Faribault Public Schools provides a continuum of special education and related services depending on each student’s unique special education needs and the goals determined by the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Services are provided in the least restrictive environment which is appropriate for the individual student.

Our specialists can help you to determine the best services to meet your child’s individual needs. The earlier that needs are identified, the more progress can be made before the child enters kindergarten.

If your child is 0-2 years old and you have any questions about his/her development, call 333-6804. For children 3-5 years, call 333-6455.

Looking for high school SPOTS members!

SPOTS, or Students Performing On Tough Situations, is a issue-based traveling drama group of the Youth De-velopment office at the Faribault High School. SPOTS members develop original scenes about issues affect-ing today’s youth. The troupe performs their original and educational scenes for all ages. The SPOTS group will begin performing in classrooms in October, visiting grades K-10 and every school in the district!

SPOTS membership and performances offer great entertainment and educational value. In addition to the benefits SPOTS performances provide to the audi-ences, SPOTS members gain from the improvisational experience. SPOTS members develop public speaking skills, increase knowledge about social issues, and have the opportunity to give back to their community. Members have stated, time after time, performances make them feel good because they are helping some-one else. The students enjoy being role-models and see themselves as leaders in our community.
