Strong Foundation for Personalized Learning is the Key to Success With the first day of school quickly approaching, I’m reminded of how far our school district has come in just one school year. Our truly remarkable students, staff and parents were the key to completing a one-year transition to a new digital learning environment incorporating over 6700 iPads in our classrooms and in our homes.
When the busses roll in on September 3, Farmington will be the largest school district in Minnesota where each student has access to a digital learning device such as an iPad to aid in their education.
As impressive as all this is and as quickly as this all seemed to happen, the truth of the matter is that Farmington schools have taken deliberate steps over several years to provide the foundation for such an exciting initiative.
To begin, our efforts with mobile technology are firmly based on goals of the Board of Education and an in-depth strategic plan to customize education for all students. The iPads are simply a part
of the “how” of a system aimed at customizing education for every student. This strategic plan was developed with input from hundreds of citizens, students and staff .
Concurrent with the development our strategic direction, teachers worked judiciously over the course of the past several years to create a culture where customizing education and reaching the needs of every student is the priority. This work took the form of multiple programs and professional development initiatives, most of which occurred behind the scenes yet have greatly benefited our students’ learning experiences. Examples of this include the development of professional learning communities where teams of teachers
work together to share information to improve results for students, curriculum mapping and the alignment of instruction and formative assessments with meaningful learning objectives, and the incorporation of instructional strategies and interventions focused on meeting kids where they’re at and taking them forward especially in literacy and mathematics.
As we begin school this year, these experiences will provide a considerable operational advantage in reaching our district strategic intent of ensuring all students reach their highest aspirations. There’s a growing sense of optimism in our schools and no shortage of excitement for moving our students, and our district forward. We appreciate your involvement and participation in your schools and your continued support for students.

3.Innovation Zones were created by the State Legislature in 2012.
4. The Innovation Zone designation will for fi ve years.
5. The Innovation Zone designation is not a grant and does not come with any additional funding, but it does allow fl exibility from some mandates and exemptions in order to think and act creatively in customizing learning and meeting the unique needs of students
The Innovation Zone application included an illustrated video produced at no-cost to the district by national award-winning illustrator, documentary fi lmmaker and information designer Anthony Weeks. Visit the www.farmington.k12.mn.us web site or search A New Design for Education on YouTube.
