I have been glad to have a class for some partially blind youngmen. One who had come from Kyushu was introduced to us by a pastor ofthe Church of Christ there. There i s a school for th e b lin d about af if teen ndnute walk from our church. This young man brought several ofhis friends. This group have a l l become blind during the past threeyears due to di se ase or injury. Some are high school graduates. Theywanted some English so I ta lk to them in simple English explaining inJapanese what they did not understand. One could read a l i t t le so heread the v/ords of a hymn in Japanese a verse a t a time and then we sang.I gave them some Bible verses also. I was able to get some gospels inJapanese Braille and they went home each carrying a gospel as delightedas a school child with his f i r s t book. n brai l le a gospel i s a largeth ick book. Some who were absent came asking for a copy but not enoughcopies could be obtained at this time. iospels are sold for less thanten cents to the blind. They have a l l returned to the i r homes in otherparts of Japan but in September we hope to have a real Bible class.

In Japan where marriages are s t i l l planned by parents or friendsChristian workers are beginning to feel a responsibil i ty in Assistingin getting Christian young people together. jSpme pastors and otherearnest Chri st ians have formed a marriage consultation group with headquarters in one of the centrally located chiirches. Recently theyacked to hold a meeting in the Mabashi church. t was an interestingdiscussion. Mothers told of the problem of the working daughters whoarc? in no hurr^ to get married so wil l not accept the offers they havehaO . One wo van s nephew wanted to marry but he had no work. wasa collogc graduate and would like to go in to some business. The consulcing group thought they had just the gir l for him. A family had abusiness and wknted a young man to marry the i r daughter and carry cmthe business. But will the young people agree to these plans? ^these days young people are given more freedom of choice.

I have been asked recently by the mother of one of our Christian:young women to help out in the marriage plans. There is a young manin the church \^om the g i r l l ikes very much. They have asked me t afind out i f the young man l ikes her. t i s not so simple as soundsfo r I must not l e t him know tha t I have been asked to inquire . I havenot had an opportunity to talk to the young man alcaie. I do hope works out for they are both splendid Christian youzig people^ I haveknown fo r ten years

    WINTER WTxJ l

    De^ l^lexLds:

    IlkbajBhi TokyoJapan.

I t ie winter in Tokyo. Some people may think ve do not have winter sinc^ weare further south t h ^ San Francisco, but we get cold winds from over Manchuriathat hring freezing weathe^. The temperature was helow freezing in the l iv ingroom one morning in January before the fire was buil t . We use coal stoves but donot keisp the wholei house heated. We have many sunny days when we need no l leat inthe middle of the day.

The Christmas services were especially enjoyable. Thore were the usual meetings a t the church, Mr. Patton brou^ t the phristmas message on Sunday, Afterwards a ^oup of women served a lunch - a rice and vegetable mixture decoratedwfth red ginger/ISra^^ weei/ d e^ i / Decorations are idso deli^ous. We had an exch^ge of small gif ts . Attached to each was an appropriate Scirptureverse. A tiny tree had verses Ps. 1:1-5* children s program was held thatevening making i t a busy day. At the women s group meeting,I served an Americanmea l which pleased thenu IChey paid .for the materia l and ass i s ted in the preparat ions. As i s 0 ^ yearly custom, a groub. of poung people went with me to singc^p l s for th e old people iand the sick on Ohristmas eve. Each caroler had a l ighted candle while singing. Many have good voices and they sang Joyfully, bringingjoy to many v o had been waiting e ager ly f or us to come.

Our t r ip to the T. B. hospital was made much easier and pleasanter th is yearas,Mrs. Lois Walker took us in her ceur.. A woman from Mabashi went with us and thefow of us gave out ca rds, t racts , and Scripture portions to about one hundredpatients besides the nurses. At these special seasons,we see every patient and argable to find those to whom we feel we can give help, so go again. One young womanwas so despondent that she had considered suicide. Ko one had come to call on her. There is another young woman of thirty-five has been there for fourteen years. In the meantime, both her paren ts have died. NoV she is well enough to leave butshe has no place to go. We are trying fiiid work for he r. She has worked somein a home near here and spent the h i ^ t s in my home.

I rec^-roOoxes containing lovely sEJ useful gif ts froa members of my familyand from fr iends as well as some gi f t s of money. Tl^e women *8 group of the CourtStreet Church in Salem, Oregon, and the Women Is Missionary Group of the FirstChristian Church;, of Canton, Ohio, sent box s of food and warm clothing. The Canton,Ohio, Group renewed my subscription to the Christian Standard. They had subscribedfor me los t year. Mr. and Mrs. Wm 35unting of McKeesport, Pa. , renewed my subscr iption for two years to the Reader s Digest. They have provided me with thisinteresting magazine for several years. One gif t from Mrs. Eongo, was a footwarmer - a small aluminum foots tool container fo r a bed o f ashes on which i s placeda few pieces of hot charcoal. There is a grate cover on which you put your feet,I gave Mrs. Hongo a large copper hot water bottle. I t looks like we both have coldf e e t .

We have some sad news th is t ime. Mr. and Mrs. Pet er I ta ga ki l os t thei r s ixmonths old baby. Althou^, crushed with grief, their faith has not wavered. Theytrust thatGod does all things well. I t was an unusually strong and heathy babyand was sick only a day or two. The doctor was not sure of the cause. They hadrecently given i t the regular shots which all babies are given these days.. I t mayhave been caused by them. Even thou^ there are^ excellent doctors in Japan, theyare not so careful about infect ion. I have b een taking some treiatoents for noseand throat recently. The instruments which the doctor uses are c^efu l ly s ter i l iged but the nurse took the ^ass which th e former patient had used and Jus t r in sed i]^ cold water and gave i t to me. In Js^anese homes, not so much care i s takenin >fa8hing baby bottles, Pew homes use hot water for washing dishes. I was in anapeortment house recently waiting at a door when a boy came out to wash the familydii^es a t the cosmon sink. He turned on th e fa uce t And held each piece under thewater and the job was done.

3)r. Hideo Aoki, the JapaneserAmerican missionary, speaks once a month a t theMabashi churck in place of Julius Fleenor. The church ^appreciates his earnestspi r i tua l messages. He usually brings his wife and children. Mrs. Aoki alsospeaks Japanese as she was in H i^ School in Japan for two years, but the childrendo not understand anything but En^ish, Th ^y attend an American school. Thefamily usually meets with other Church of Gi^rist missionaries for th e bi-monthlyprayer and fel lowship meetings.

One of our Christ ian women, Mrs. Matsuzaki, moved to the outskir ts of th e ci ty .I t tak es her an hour to come as i s n ec es sa ry t o walk par t o f the way. We havebeen having our regular women s meetings in her home twice a year. She furnishes

a good lunch and we have Bible et rjid fellowship afterwards. Kow she haseisked that we s ta r t a meeting in her home a t l eas t once a month for the women ofthe neighborhood. Some of her friends have been asking for th is and she i s alwayseager to tes t i fy of her fai th. We went l a s t week in a bad snow s to rm . .M rs. We are indeed d is appo in ted to hear of the closing of the Tokyo Bible Seminary,Mr Sims and Mr. Patton are sincere in l^eir belief that for the evangelism inJapan the t ra ining of lay preachers i s most important. In th is way, the church canbe self-s\:porting. However, most missionaries :^ not, agree, with them. feelthat we must s ta r t a new Bible t r^n ing program. I t i s good to have lay preachersbut evangelism is a full time job. In Japan, v^ere the working hours are long, there i s l i t t l e time fo r evangelism^^ We have an earnest lay preacher in our churchbut he says that the only time he has for. Bible study is when riding on the t rain. The Japanese teachers in the Seminary, Mr. Muto and Mr. IJima, have been influencedby the No-Church gr01 teaching.

I t ems o f In te re stWe are always happy when missionaries to other countr ies v i s i t us. Evenstrangers seem l ike old. friends because of the common interest . We enjoyed ia vis i tfrom the Garland Bare family recently when t he y s topped ove r between planes. Mr.and Mrs. Willis Hale vis i ted us in the fa l l Willis was a classmate in EugeneBible University.

We are also pleased to have the servicemen vis i t us. Some have difficulty in ^finding us , I f you ,will give your, servicemen our address,-they can drop us a cardand we sha l l give them di rec t ions

    According to a Tokyo newspaper U. S. servicemen in the far east a re tak ingcare of 22,000 orphans with money out of their own pockets. A socia l v/orker inKorea said Don t l e t anyone t e l l you.t t iat GIb have given the Uncle Sam a blackeye in Asia. I t i s phenomenal the number of r|8 who have given oi^ans their f i r s tf r i end s i n life

I t is estimated, that three million Japanese are taking t ranquil izer pi l l sThe pi l ls are, however, half the. size .o f th e Merican. A spokesman for a d3rug, company said After a l l we Japanese are so much smal le r t hen the Americans. Besides, by nature we are much easier to tranquilize.

The Prosti tution Control Law will come into force on April 1. All over thecountry l6S,000 prostitutes, ii,c.luding 59t018 vomen fn redli^t districts, 63,035in the green li ^t d i st ri ct (inns and restaurants which are actually prostitutionhouses) and ^5,978 geisha girls who are engaged in prost itut ion, wil l go out ofpractice. Let us prey for these thousands of pi t i fu l women the majority of whomhave been sold into this l i fe as a child. They will not a ll be freed even thou^that is the law. Some Christian organizations are doing all they can fo r them.IKiere has. been a big improvement in the sanitation of Tokyo suburbs recently.Previously the refuse was carried out in big wooden buckets swung from a poleacross a man s shoulders. Then, until the big trucks came to carry them off to beused as fert i l izer these had to be stacked. Where they have a il consid.ered aaaavenient place for .ptacking, was just beyond the cement wall from our kitchett door. When these buckets were emptied into the tanks on the trucks, we closed a ll the

windows; then realized that we had only shut the smell inside. Suddenly, tanks^malX nou^ to go down the narrow alleys-have appeared doing ^X^the cleaning witha long suction hose in a more sanit;^i\Y and less smelling way. I t is s aid th at thereis. a time for everything.. In Jap^^, there is a time to l^old your breath. They usedto use slow moving ox .carts for this purpose. When j^u inet these on the streets, you had to hold your breath for a long timeyour Missionai^,Grace Paniham
