DESCRIPTION

An in detail explanation of Episode 20 of Fate/Stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works]

TRANSCRIPT

  • Specific choice of words here, he saw Hell, not just Death or Pain or a similar word. This scene is to

define a scene like this as a Hell.

  • Then it repeats, showing that Hell is something that will occur over and over again.

In this scene theres no one dead, in fact Shirou is going to save people, but it is still Hell. Just what is

    Hell?

  • Following Shirou seeing Hell his conclusion is that Archer was right.

Why is this Archers concern in response to Hell? By now you can solidly guess that Hell is this

scenes term of Shirou not living up to his ideal. The previous scenes were all Hell because someone

wasnt saved, random terrorists in the first few scenes, and Shirou himself wasnt saved in the Counter

Guardian contract. Archer just wishes that he was powerful enough to save everyone.

  • Archer was intent on not losing anything, or through a Shirous ideals translator, he wanted to save

everyone. Because he tried so hard to save everyone, he reached Hell because of his imperfect results.

  • This is the first Hell. The first time he had no opportunity to live up to his ideals.

  • Young Shirou is walking away from those who died in the fire, and older Shirou tells younger Shirou he

has to come back and save them all or hell enter Hell because he didnt save everyone.

This is important because older Shirou is mirroring Archers position, hes telling his younger self to

come back and die unless he can live up to his ideal.

  • Young Shirou falls over at Older Shirous words, but gets up again and keeps walking away, towards Hell.

Older Shirou wonders why he survived, whats the point of him surviving when hell just continue

towards Hell/an unfulfilled ideal. This leads to guilt and Hell because he wants everyone to have been

    saved.

  • His answer is this moment, Kiritsugu finding a survivor.

  • Archer tells Shirou that his answer is still Hell. Even if Kiritsugu saved someone, he still couldnt save

everyone. Shirou is walking into his answer, ie that moment. And that moment is still a Hell in Archers

    eyes.

  • Shirou walks forward, into this Hell. Hes happy with this Hell even if Archer isnt. Archer forgot that he

should be happy with this, even if it is Hell.

  • Shirou resolves that even if his result is Hell, his ideal is still worth it. The Hell where someone is saved is

better than the Hell where no one is, and just because his ideal isnt his own it doesnt mean it isnt

    worth following.

    III aaammm.........

  • Shirou now accepts Archers own incantation, and hence he accepts Archers words. But he still keeps

    his ideal.

    .........mmmaaadddeee ooofff ssswwwooorrrdddsss

  • Shirou claims he only lost because he hadnt found an answer to Archers words, and hence his spirit

was weak. But he has an answer now.

Shirou concludes that while Archers criticisms were correct, they were merely correct words. Even

Archers correctness doesnt reduce the value of his ideal.
