My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you for your continued support of our Academy. I was so happy that so many of you came to see the wonderful work of the Academy during the annual Open House. If you know of anyone who would like to profit from this excellent education, please be sure to contact Mr. William DiBacco at the school (216.381.0363) or online at [email protected]. Perhaps you will enjoy our website: www.sacredheartofjesusacademy.org. Also remember that our pre-school will be offering all day ses-sions beginning this fall. Please let us impress you!

Today we are celebrating the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas. According to Jewish Law, the first born son belonged to God and had to be bought back from God 40 days after birth. At that time the mother was to be ritually purified after childbirth. Today, 40 days after Christmas, we re-flect on this event in the life of Jesus.

As Jesus is the Light of the World, candles are blessed on this day. Special candles for home use will be available for a donation of $3.00 after all of the Masses this weekend. Throats will be blessed after Masses this weekend and after Masses on Monday, the feast of St. Blaise.

May God’s blessings be yours this week

Father Ireland

FROM THE PASTOR ’S DESK …

On January 22, Pope Francis sent the following tweet to his 3.5 million English-speaking Twitter followers , offering his support for the annual March for Life:

“I join the March for Life in Washington with my prayers. May God help us respect all life, especially the most vulnerable,”

Let us pray that we continue to be blessed with vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

May young men and women hear the call of the Lord and follow Him.

Re-Discovering What We Catholics Believe!

… Reaffirming the Faith ...

Come and Re-Discover What We Catholics Believe!

The next session of our series, Reaffirming the Faith, will be held on Thursday, February 6, in Mary’s Room at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Because the weather caused us to postpone last week’s session, we will re-present episode 9, “Anointing the Sick: Grace for Healing,” from the series Catechism of the Catholic Church. After reviewing the biblical verse that testifies to the practice of the Sacrament of Anointing in the early Church (James 5:14-15), we will then identify the conditions under which anointing may be administered, and describe the effects of the sacrament. There will be a 45-minute-long video presentation followed by a group discussion. Please join us this week – or any week - whenever your schedule permits! The RTF program is not a formal class taken for credit (at least not on this earth!) and weekly attendance is not taken or required.

For more information, please contact

Tom Kelly at 216.382.3614.

MONDAY MORNING B IBLE STUDY …

The Monday Morning Bible Study Group will meet in Mary’s Room at 10 o’clock on February 3 to discuss, in advance, the Lectionary readings for the upcoming 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Sunday, February 9). Join us this week and bring a friend or family mem-ber, Catholic or Non-Catholic, for an enjoyable and inspiring morning.

For more information, please contact Tom Kelly at 216.382.3614.

After nearly two years, and over 2,000 diapers made by loving hands, our project is coming to an end. The hospital in Haiti, where all our diapers were distributed, have a good supply and no longer have the same need. Thank you for bringing in materials, for cutting and sewing, or for whatever other ways you contributed to the success of this project.

If you are working on any diapers at home, please finish them and return them to Mary’s Room by February 15. Thanks again for your generous response to mothers and babies in need.

This weekend the Church celebrates WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE.

We recognize and give thanks for those who have consecrated their lives to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The consecrated life is one way that women and men live out their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus.

We continue to remember in our prayers Brother Daniel and Abbé Weaver who are studying for the priesthood. And of course, we daily ask God to bless Father Ireland and Father Winkel, who have followed God’s call to serve us here at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Catholic Schools Week was a huge success this past week. Our week began with a family Mass Sunday, followed by an Open House at the Academy. The week’s agenda included Priests’ Appreciation Day with sweet treats; a Pals’ Day; a Spirit Day and student kickball game; a bingo afternoon; Pastry and Parents; a Science Day with Carnegie Science Center; and a teacher lunch-eon. What a week it was!! Thank you to our PTC, and the many parent volunteers who helped with the Open House, the pastry breakfast, and Science Day activities. Your help was very much appreciated.

PRE-SCHOOL NEWS: Fall, 2014: We will offer a Full-Day Pre-School Program. The Half-Day Program will still be offered as another option. We are very excited about this new venture in Early Childhood education. Please spread the word.

“Blessed by your Spirit, may we always proclaim your love with our lives”

Apart from decoration, is there a theological reason for the art we use in church if the focus of what we are there for is the Mass?

The whole person ~ mind, body, spirit ~ worships God. Our prayer and adoration are not a process of the mind or a function of the soul. Our whole being, including our thoughts and emotions, our will and intellect, our spirit and soul, all worship God. Each part of us con-tributes to our experience and understanding of God as a tran-scendent being.

Art inspires us, touches our emotions, and teaches through images. Religious art can create an atmosphere that helps us focus on spiritual realities and worship God better. The best ex-planation comes right from the catechism:

"Sacred art is true and beautiful when its form corresponds to its particular vocation: evoking and glorifying, in faith and adoration, the transcendent mystery of God ~ the surpassing invisible beauty of truth and love visible in Christ, who 'reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of His nature,' in whom 'the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.' This spiritual beauty of God is reflected in the most holy Virgin Mother of God, the angels and saints. Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier." (§ 2502).
