THE FAUDI GUARDIAN

It is important to know that there are no changes to the requirements for the qualification test. All existing approvals according to EI 1581, 5th edition also meet the requirements of the EI 1581, 6th edition! FAUDI Aviation, Parker Velcon and Peco Facet have confirmed to the Energy Institute that they will not rename existing products according to EI 1581, 6th edition. All products approved according to EI 1581, 5th edition also meet the requirements of the EI 1581, 6th edition.

But, elements according to the 6th edition may not be operated together with elements according to the 5th edition of the EI 1581 in one filter water separator.

In December 2016, the Energy Institute published a new edition of the EI 1581 for filter water separators. The 6th edition of the EI 1581 has some important novations on which we want to inform you here.

Length in mm Length in inch

Table 1

Type S-M for mobile filter water separators was introduced here. This new type was developed from the previous types S-LD (Low-Dirt) and S-LW (Low-Water) and combines the two types in the S-M type (Low Dirt/Low Water). All previous filter water separators that were classified as type S-LW are automatically approved in EI 1581 6. according to type S-M as well, provided that the flow rate of the vessel is not changed.

The coalescer and separator elements with outer diameters 50 mm (2 inch) and 100 mm (4 inch) have been added. The lengths for the 50 mm (2 inch) elements have been standardized and is reflected in table 1.

To keep the corresponding filter water separators from being equipped with existing 2 inch monitor elements, the 2inch coalescer/separator elements must be applied with a screw-on adapter.

The new elements are not intended for replacing/converting existing filter water separators with 6 inch elements according to EI 1581 5th edition.

All existing coalescer and separator elements approved to EI 1581 5th edition are automatically also approved pursuant to EI 1581 6th edition and can be used further.

In coordination with the users, the test fuel may also correspond to national norms and standards. It is no longer mandatory to use test fuels pursuant to ASTM D1655 or DEF Stan 91-091 here.

The requirements and directives regarding the filter vessel according to EI 1581 5th edition are no longer applicable in EI 1581 6th edition. These items are covered by the EI 1596 "Design and construction of aviation fuel vessels". This means that constructions of all new filter water separators - as well as monitor filters and micro filters - must comply with the requirements of EI 1596. EI 1581 6th edition only describes the requirements to the coalescer and separator elements and the procedures for the approval tests.

EI 1581 6th edition no longer deals with the test logs for material compatibilities; these are defined in EI 1589 "Materials compatibility testing for aviation fuel filter elements and fuel sensing devices" now.

Guidelines New specification EI 1592

The EI 1592 gives manufacturers of electronic sensors the basis for developing sensors that can recognize large water volumes in the processing process of aviation fuels before (upstream of) filtration and

separation units. These sensors are not meant to replace filtration and separation in the processing path of aviation fuels! They are only to be used in connection with recognized aviation fuel filtration systems! The sensors are intended to be relatively simple sensors that supply a GO or NO-GO signal. A NO-GO signal is activated when a large water volume is recognized in the processing line -> water transfer.

EI 1592 is applicable for the following usage areas.

● Recognition of larger amounts of free water in running aviation fuel● Civilian fueling applications, including fixed installations, hydrants, hydrant carts and fueling vehicles● Applications in which aviation fuel with approved additives is processed● Applications for jet fuel and aviation petrol

The scope of application of this publication shall not include electronic sensors that determine the amount of free water in aviation fuel. Information on these sensors can be found in the manual EI 1570 "Handbook on electronic sensors for the detection of particulate matter and/or free water during aircraft refueling" and the specification EI 1598 "Design, functional requirements and laboratory testing protocols for electronic sensors to monitor free water and/or particulate matter in aviation fuel", 2nd edition.

EI 1592 contains precise specifications for manufacturers regarding the development of such sensors. We will explain the most important items to you below.

● Any parts of the sensor that come into contact with aviation fuel must not contain any zinc, lead, copper or cadmium. Use of copper or aluminum alloy with more than 3% copper must be avoided.

● All non-metallic materials, such as seals or other elastomers that get into contact with the aviation fuel must be suitable for this use.

● All external surfaces must be resistant or protected against corrosion from weather influences. Environ-ments with salty air or influences from airplane de-icing with salt must be considered here as well.

● The temperature range of the sensor is to be determined by the manufacturer. However, it should be considered that fueling is also performed at -30 °C (-22 °F) or +50 °C (+122 °F). Suitability of the sensors for such temperatures should be discussed between manufacturers and users.

● The sensor must not increase the temperature of its direct environment, including the aviation fuel, so that danger would result. Operation for extended periods of time (up to 12 hours) must not cause any danger either.

● It should be possible to use the sensor in processing processes with a flow rate of up to 4,500 l/min (1,190 usgpm) and a linear flow rate of up to 12 m/s. Line diameters can be up to 400 mm (8"). Other flow rates must be agreed between the manufacturers and users.

● The sensor should be designed for the pressures stipulated in table 1. The system should continue to work even during temporary pressure surges, including reduction of the flow rate from the maximum flow rate for two seconds (in order to simulate deactivation of a deadman or safety rope system) and a 0.5 second deactivation of the fuel flow (to simulate deactivation by the airplane).

Guidelines New specification EI 1592

● Sensor function must not be impaired by vibrations caused by the fueling vehicle.● The sensor should be constructed in such a way that no contamination in the fuel can adhere to it or

should be self-cleaning or easy to remove for cleaning in the in-situ location without any great effort (which would require re-calibration).

● The Sensor must not interfere with signals of other components, including those of the fueling vehicle and the airplane. The signals/frequencies in operation must comply with all applicable provisions.

● The correct operation of the sensor must not be influenced by sunlight.● Details of any electronic drift in the device signal shall be provided by the manufacturer

Now it turns out that FAUDI Aviation is rightfully called the innovation leader. In 2013, we put a sensor on the market that fully meets the specifications of EI 1592. This was now confirmed by the Energy Institute

as well - see the following page. The SLUGGUARD® was designed for recognition of the separating layer between the aviation fuel and water and can be used for the application named in EI 1592. At FAUDI Aviation, the SLUGGUARD® is not only used as a "stand-alone solution" for recognizing carried-along water in the lines; it is also used in our DRAINGUARD®-sump for automatic draining

of water sumps in filter water separators and in the SIGHTGUARD®, a smart water level indicator that reports electronically when a pre-defined water level in water sumps or tanks has been reached.
