Fueki (or for Generation Y kids, “Doubutsu-nori”) is a starch glue that was produced in 1975. This glue is real popular with the kids. I used this stuff all the time in kindergarten.

By the mid-80’s, there were new kinds of glues, like stick glues and liquid glues, that came into the market. These glues became more popular because they stuck better and they didn’t get all over your fingers. Fueki nearly disappeared from the market.

Twenty-five years later, I found Fueki at a strange place–a cosmetics shop. The guy there had trans-formed it into a hand cream. “Man, this is awesome!” I thought. I bought one and put it next to my Mac to keep it handy. Every time I see it, I get all nostalgic. This company, Fueki Industrial Corporation, still sells Fueki scratch glue too. It’s confusing that they use the same exact package for both the hand cream and the glue, but... well, if you look at the bottom is says Nakayoshi (“good buddy”) hand cream.

Fueki is an eco-friendly glue, as it’s 100% starch. People are very interested in ecorelatedproducts these days in Japan. Maybe that was part of the reason they came back into the market.

フエキ（ジェネレーションY世代は動物糊と呼ぶかもしれない）は１９７５年生まれのでんぶん糊。 子供たちの間で人気だった糊で、私は幼稚園時代に使っていた。８０年代半ば頃までにスティック糊や、液状糊のような新しいタイプが登場、糊付きが良い事や指で触らなくても良い事などの理由で人気をはくし、フエキは市場から姿を消しつつあった。２５年後、私はコスメ売り場でフエキと再会。 フエキはハンドクリームに姿を変えていた。 「これはかわいい！使える！」と思い、１つ購入。 いつでも使えるようにマックの横に置いた。 いつも見るたびに、ノスタルジックな思い出が蘇る。 不易工業株式会社は現在もフエキ糊を販売している。 糊とハンドクリームが全く同一パッケージなことはちょっと混乱しそうだが、パッケージの裏をみると…仲良しハンドクリームと書かれている。 フエキは地球に優しい糊。１００％でんぷん。 日本ではエコ関連商品に高い関心があり、フエキ糊が市場にカムバックしてきたのはそんな事が背景にあるのかもしれない。

1. How did you get an idea for the package? Who designed it?

Our package was designed first by a plastic molding company in Fukui Prefecture.Our project section added some changes, and we started to sell it in 1975, which was 33 years ago.

2. Is that a dog?

Although the name is “ Animal Glue,” we hwew at the company think it is a dog.

3. I bought this product because it made me feel nostalgic. Will the target market of Animal glue be still children in kindergarten and elementary school?

Even now, it is still the favorite glue of kindergartners and elementary school students.Since we started selling it 33 years ago, nearly one million children use it every year.

4. What is your vision for Animal glue in the future?

One of our goals is making products to please all generations.I am sure that our high safety standard and quality of the glue and cuteness of the package will appeal not only Japan but also the world.

5. Is there a philosophy you live your life by? Or something like your personal motto?

This is one of my favorite sayings: “One is never tied to one way of thinking; any situation can be handled with versatility.”

6. What is the most interesting thing in your life right now?

Last year, my daughter had a baby girl. She is a year and a half now. But when she gets to be 20, or even my age, I wonder what the world will be like. If it’s possible, I hope we can all live in a happy and peaceful world. It’s difficult to achieve, but I’d like to do something to make it come true. If you ask about interests, that would be mine.

１、どうぶつ糊のパッケージはどのようにうまれたのですか？どなたがデザインされたものですか？

どうぶつ糊は、弊社製品の容器成形先である福井県のプラスティック成形会社が最初にデザインをし成形したものを、弊社企画部門が若干の変更を加え、今から33年前の1975年に発売を開始いたしました。

２、犬ですか？

ネーミングはなく「どうぶつ糊」として売り出されましたが、社内では犬と認知しておりました。

３、私個人はこの商品からノスタルジーのようなものを感じで購入しましたが、今でも動物糊のターゲットは幼稚園、小学校低学年層などの子供達なのでしょうか。

今でも全国の幼稚園保育所、小学校低学年の皆様に愛用されております。発売から33年間、毎年100万人近い方々がお使い頂いた事になります。

4、これからの動物糊についての展望をお聞かせください。

世代を跨いで喜んでいただける製品作りは、弊社の目標の一つです。私は容器の可愛さと中身であるでんぷん糊の安全安心基準及び品質の高さは、日本だけでなく世界に向けて発信できる製品だと確信いたしております。

5、 梶田様の人生哲学というか、座右の銘みたいなものはありますか。

好きな言葉としていくつかある中で「融通無碍（ゆうずうむげ）」というのがあります。融通無碍 ：一定の考え方にとらわれることなく、どのような事態にも滞りなく対応できること

6、今一番関心のあることはなんですか？

昨年娘が女の子を出産いたしました。今1歳半ですが、この子達が二十歳を迎える頃、そして今の私の年になる頃、世の中は、世界はどうなっているんだろう。 でき得るならば、平和で、皆が笑顔で暮らせる世であって欲しいと思っています。難しいことですが、その為に今私に何が出来るのかということが、関心事といえば関心事なのかも知れません。

Everybody loves Shake Shack! The “shake burger” is one of New Yorker’s favorite burgers. The guys at the Shake Shake use a mix of sirloin and brisket from Danny Meyer’s Eleven Madison Park, which is the secret to this juicy burger. The soft and sweet bun is a perfect match with the meat. The hot dogs and frozen custard are also exceptionl. And on top of that, they have local fresh beers and wines as well. Drinking in the park! How awesome is that?The line can be rather long and you might have to wait for over an hour during lunch time. The best time to go is from three to six in the afternooon.

みんなシェイクシャックが 大好きだ！ ニューヨーカーが最も好きなバーガーの１つであるシェイクバーガーは、ダニーメイヤーのイレブンマジソンパークレストランからのサーロインとブリスケットを混ぜたものを使っている。 この肉が肉汁したたるバーガーの鍵だ。　そして、柔らかで甘いバンズはこのバーガーとパーフェクトマッチである。 ホットドックやアイスクリームもまた格別。さらに、フレッシュなローカルビールやワインもある。 公園で飲めるなんて最高じゃないか！行列は長く、 ランチタイムは １時間以上並ぶ場合もあり。午後３時から午後６時の間が狙い目。

Soymilk. I know it has been around forever, but I’ve only started noticing it everywhere since I’ve become an adult. In the past all you could find was the plain old flavor, but nowadays there are so many different kinds. There’s vanilla, chocolate, coffee, matcha, black tea, banana, kinako (a sweet soybean powder), and even baked sweet potato. The list goes on. Because of all these flavors, even the soymilk skeptic can enjoy some soymilk. As for me, I prefer black tea flavor. The price ranges from $1 to $1.50. Healthy and delicious.

豆乳。 子供の頃からあったけど、こんなに豆乳を見かけるのは大人になってからだ。 昔は、ストレートしかなかったフレーバーも、いまじゃ、ビックリする程沢山ある（バニラ、チョコ、コーヒー、抹茶、紅茶、バナナ、焼き芋、きな粉などなど）癖がすくなく、美味しく飲むことができる。 個人的には紅茶が好み。 一本 ８０円から１２０円程度。　 美味しくて健康なのだ。

大豆

夏の間は、テムズの南岸、South Bankの川沿いを夕方歩くのが楽しかった。London Bridgeから、ロンドンアイの見えるWaterlooやEnbankmentまで。冬になり日暮れが早くなってからはしばらく歩いていなかった。ひさしぶりに土曜日の午前中から出かけてみることにした。

この時期にしては珍しく晴れていい天気。気温もそれほど低くなく気分も明るくなってくる。ロンドンブリッジの地下鉄の駅を出て、Thames Pathという小道に入って行く。少し歩くと川沿いに出る。川向こうにはシティーのビル群。この時期、川沿いにはクリスマスマーケットの出店がたくさん並んでにぎわっている。

さらに歩いて、ミレニアムブリッジのところに出る。2000年を記念してできた歩行者のみがわたれる橋だ。まっすぐにセントポール大聖堂の方向につながっている。ここの歴史と未来が入り交じる風景が自分の最も好きな場所だ。振り返るとテートモダン美術館。展示をじっくり見るのもいいが、今日は芝居に行くので、一番上の階のカフェレストランまでのぼって、お茶しながら景色を堪能する。

In summer time, I enjoyed walking along the River Thames around South Bank and watching the sunset. I would walk from London Bridge to Waterloo and theEmbankment, from which I could see the London Eye.

Today’s weather was unusually nice, as a sunny day is rare in this season. The temperature wasn’t so low so it really brightened me up and made me want to go out. I got off the subway at London Bridge Station and took Thames Path. I walked a bit and hit the riverside, over which lies the city skyline. During this season, there’s a Christmas Market along the river, where tons of stores are selling crafts and such.

I walked a little farther and came to the Millenium Bridge (the London Millenium Footbridge), a pedestrian -only steel suspension bridge crossing the river in the direction of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Areas that integrate history with the future are my favorite places. Turning around I found Tate Modern, a modern art museum. I finally decided to enjoy a cup of tea from the top floor of Tate while looking out on the views below.

After leaving Tate, I came upon an artificial beach, Gabriel’s Wharf, which also housed an art and fashion building complex I’ve always wanted to visit. There were a number of restaurants, and I chose a yakitori place called “BINCHO” for a late lunch. It was an interesting experience: eating yakitori while gazing out over the River Thames.

After lunch I headed over to the Royal National Theatre. The play that day was “War Horse”, and it was about a horse that joined the battle in World War I.

テートモダンを出て、さらにテムズの上流に歩くと、ガブリエルワーフという人工の砂浜がある。ここに小さなアートとショッピングの複合施設のようなビルがあって、以前から入ってみたかった。いくつかレストランもあるのだが、焼き鳥「BINCHO」に入って遅いランチをとることに。テムズ川を見ながら焼き鳥ランチとはなんだか不思議である。

その後、Royal National Theatreに向かう。今日のマチネの演目はWar House。第一次大戦に従軍した馬の話だ。

I walked a little bit and hit the riverside. There is a skyline across the river. In this season, There is a holiday market along the river. Tons of stores are selling crafts and many other things.

二時間半の芝居が終わるともう外は真っ暗。ちょっと寒いが、川沿いのクリスマスマーケットを冷やかしてみる。クリスマスマーケットはもともとドイツの習慣らしく、ソーセージやサラミ、ザワークラフトやホットワインを売っている場合が多いが、ここのマーケットはスウィーツ、おもちゃや写真などが多かった。

By the time the play was done, it was dark outside. It was kinds of chilly but I stopped by Chistmas market along the river anyway. These Christmas markets originated in Germany. They usually sell sausages, salami, sauerkraut, and mulled wine, but there are also many sweets, toys, and artwork sold too.

Embankmentの橋のたもとまで行ったら、メリーゴーランドが見えて来た。背景には、ライトアップされたロンドンアイ。ロンドンの暗く寒い冬に光り輝くメリーゴーランドに出会うと、何かほっとして、暖かい気持ちになる。

帰りは、橋を渡って地下鉄のEmbankment駅から帰る。川沿いのRoyal Festival Hallや観光船の乗り場などのライトが美しかった。

At the foot of the Embankment Bridge, I found a carousel. In back of it was the illuminated London Eye. In the dark and cold London winter, I saw a bright carousel. This made me feel somehow nostalgic and warm inside.

I walked over the bridge to get to Embankment Station to get home. The lights from the Royal Festival Hall and the tourist boat stations were beautiful.

My Days My LifeI hung out at Shibuya a lot this month. It’s like Manhattan, more like Times sq. Every place you go, there are people, people and more people. probably because there are so many cool places to go. But if you get onto the sidestreets you can avoid the crowds. Shibuya is kind of like a huge maze...
