!!How we play is who we are !!At  FC  Birrurang  we  recognise  that  a  club’s  iden7ty  is  the  driving  force  behind  player  and  coach  development.  Our  playing  style  is  the  unique  expression  of  who  we  are,  it  defines  a  players;  !!1. Technical  skill  set    2. Mo7va7on  3. Football  Values  !!These  ideas  represent  the  founda7on  on  which  Long-‐Term  development  is  built.  Our  playing  style  represents  the  compass  and  the  des)na)on  for  our  coaches  and  our  players  development  program.  !FC  Birrurang’s  playing  style  has  been  designed  to  unleash  player’s  innate  crea7ve  abili7es  and  ensure  all  involved  have  the  ability  to  reach  their  poten7al.  This  playing  style  encourages  a  strong  belief  system  allowing  players  to  express  their  unique  style  of  play  and  achieve  their  goals.  !!!!!! !!!!!!!!

!“I think each player has an individual style…. each is concerned with giving the best to his

team, and I think my best talent is dribbling and setting up goal situations” !Ronaldinho - two time FIFA World Player of the Year

!!Who we are is how play !At  FC  Birrurang  we  believe  in  the  crea7ve  poten7al  of  our  players  and  coaches.  In  recognising  that  -‐  who  we  are  is  how  we  play  -‐  we  believe  character  development  is  as  important  as  technical  development.  Each  individual’s  playing  style  is  a  unique  expression  of  their  values  as  players  and  people.  In  young  players  forma7ve  years  sport  has  an  essen7al  role  in  developing  good  people.  !!Standing on the shoulders of giants - Following best practise !In  the  European  Club  Associa7on  report  on  academies  FC  Barcelona  describe  the  overarching  goal  of  their  player  development  program  (PDP):  !“The  ul7mate  aim  of  the  club’s  development  system,  alongside  developing  a  technically  skilful  player,  is  to  combine  sport,  personal  development  and  academic  educa7on  and  to  ins7ll  in  players  the  firm  knowledge  that  to  become  an  elite  sportsman  is  extremely  challenging  and  to  help  children  fulfill  their  true  poten7al”  (Jarosz,  2012,  p.  37).”  !Long  term  player  (and  personal)  development  is  a  unique  journey  for  each  player,  there  is  no  short  cut,  mistakes  are  made  and  failures  overcome.  The  research  that  informs  our  prac7ce,  allows  us  to  create  condi7ons  that  equip  players  with  mo7va7onal  profiles,  values  and  beliefs,  to  reach  their  poten7al  in  both  Football  and  Life.    !!

Playing style development !A vision that balances individual and team development !!

Player motivation is shaped by club values !This  passage  gives  a  great  insight  into  the  integra7on  of  player  beliefs  and  club  values:  !Four  7me  player  of  the  year  Lionel  Messi  gives  an  insight  into  his  current  mo7va7on;  !

“Football  is  a  game,  I’m  trying  to  have  fun  on  the  pitch,  always,  just  to  play.  That’s  why  I  do  it.  The  day  I  stop  having  fun  is  the  day  I  re7re…I  never  want  to  lose  that  spark,  that  passion.  Today,  teams  are  playing  more  sta7cally,  more  for  the  final  score  than  producing  good  football.  For  them,  it’s  more  important  to  win  than  to  play  well.  We  need  more  players  with  passion  coming  up  for  the  good  of  Football.  (www.dailymail.co.uk,  2012).”  !

Messi’s  beliefs  in  the  importance  of  fun  and  enjoyment  mirror  that  of  FC  Barcelona’s  development  philosophy  “The  bo]om  line  for  the  club…  is  that  if  the  children  do  not  enjoy  their  work,  they  will  not  improve”  (Jarosz,  2012,  p.  37).      !!!!

Role models !!Role  models  create  a  strong  psychological  construct  to  guide  human  development.  The  stronger  the  iden7fica7on  with  key  role  models  the  more  the  key  development  values  are  integrated  in  player  and  coach  iden7ty.  We  will  introduce  role  models  who  will  embody  our  values,  and  this  will  help  guide  the  clubs  playing  style.    !!!!!

Playing style:

Platform for potential - Parent encouragement !

The  FCB  playing  style  has  been  designed  to  embody  the  clubs  core  value  of  inclusion.  FCB  aim  to  provide  an  environment  that  gives  players,  coaches  and  parents  a  sense  of  belonging  and  community.  !“Our  goal  is  to  provide  any  kid  that  comes  to  FCB  with  the  resource  and  the  posi7ve  learning  environment

to  improve”  The  FCB  playing  style  pyramid  highlights  the  founda7ons  on  which  age-‐appropriate  player  development  will  take  place.  Within  each  founda7on  the  clubs  coaches  define  the  key  characteris7cs  of  the  playing  style  they  would  like  to  see  players  embrace.  !Below  are  the  a]ributes  of  players  and  characteris7cs  of  play  FCB  coaches  hope  to  develop.  At  every  age  the  founda)on  characteris7cs  below  should  be  evident,  they  are  not  replaced  they  are  built  on.  These  characteris7cs  form  the  basis  for  parent  encouragement  and  feedback  -‐  these  are  the  a]ributes  you  are  looking  to  reinforce  on  game-‐day  at  the  respec7ve  age  groups.  !
