NEWSLETTER Nr 6 February 2010

The Turbo Test Centre is now officially operational. The opening process phase is com-pleted : tests means’ repeatability has been checked and the preliminary tests were successful. A turbocharger testing expert and techni-cians have already joined our team to follow the new department’s ramp up.

The capabilities the CRITT M2A offers are increasing with a new range of tests:

• Durability Durability Durability Durability (endurance, thermal shock, high and low cycle fatigue…)

• Qualification Qualification Qualification Qualification (bearing system, burst and containment, leakage tests, HSB…)

• Performance Performance Performance Performance (compressor and turbine mapping, ...)

• NVHNVHNVHNVH (noise sources evaluation)

• Tests can also be performed on up-stream and downstream turbocharger parts (EGR cooler, exhaust manifold, exhaust line, ...).

Several additional equipments can also be set for more specific studies:

The CRITT M2A exhibited for the first time at the Maubeuge (Northern France) Metrology trade fair, the last December 8th. In fact, the CRITT M2A has decided to enlighten its metrology skill and proposes pres-sure (ISO 17025 accredited from 0 to 7 bar) and accelerometry calibrations. These will be soon completed by temperature and torque calibrations.

SCIENTIFIC MEETING

THE CRITT M2A : AN INVOLVED ACTOR IN

I -TRANS COMPETIT IV ITY CLUSTER

The competitivity cluster I-TRANS gathers

the main industrial, research and training

actors in rail, automotive and innovative

transportations in Northern France. To-

gether, theses members chose to build

and perpetuate a worldwide excellence

cluster around the great local skills.

The CRITT M2A is an active member of I-

TRANS, since the cluster’s beginning. It

not only takes part to Scientific Commit-

tees and Board of Directors, but it is also

one of the automotive work group (CP4)

leaders.

Further than being a local technology

example, the CRITT M2A brings more

than its R&D experience. It supported the

Turbocharger Test Centre, recognized as

a “key project” by the organization. It is

developing an interesting skill in Europe,

on I-TRANS‘ territory. This expertise ex-

tends the skill that the CRITT M2A has

been building around power train.

The CRITT M2A is involved in four re-

search programs linked to I-TRANS. Three

of them are already funded, the fourth

one is in approval process. The

CRITT M2A acts for the I-TRANS “projects

factory”. It also promotes the territory

and excellence of its actors to industrial

community.

As a skilled actor in R&D and automotive

fields, the CRITT M2A proposes its sup-

port to SME and other companies in gath-

ering all the necessary tools to success in

their R&D projects.

The CRITT M2A’s scientific meeting is scheduled for the 16th of March 2010. During this gathering time between all the centre’s partners, we will focus on the latest achievements of the CRITT M2A. This event is meant to encourage ex-changes between our industrial and academic partners, for which the bene-fits of a collaboration have to be illus-trated.

AgendaAgendaAgendaAgenda : visit of our new testing facili-ties (Turbocharger Test Centre) and status of R&D programs, in which the CRITT M2A is involved as a technology transfer centre. For all the attendees, such an event represents more than a technological watch interest. It enables our new part-ners to have a wider view of the CRITT M2A : its skills, its diversity and its environment.

19th NATIONAL MEETING ON LOCAL ECONOMY

The CRITT M2A will be pre-sent at the National Meeting on Local Economy which will take place in Roanne (France), from the 16th to the 18th of June. It will participate to a work-ing group on the role of

technology transfer centres as an interface between uni-versity and industry. The positive role of these centres on the university cursus evolution will be em-phasized during these meet-ing days.

FOCUS ON: ENGINE TESTS

With its 7 diversified and high-tech test rigs, the CRITT M2A proposes a wide range of engine tests :

• Performance control, endurance on exhaust line and catalyzer, particulate filter loading, turbocharger durability, ... on two endurance benches, among one equipped with a thermo-shock unit, able to reach down to minus 30°C.

• Engine development, EGR measurement, consumption optimisation, ... on four dynamic benches, all equipped with HORIBA 7400 ex-haust gas analyser and which are able to work with any sort of fuel (gasoline, ethanol, diesel, bio-diesel, ...)

• LGP and NGV engines can also be devel-oped and soon electrical ones, thanks to the upgrade of an HIL (Hardware In the Loop) bench.

• NVH measurements on gear box (manual or automatic), gearwheel, distribution acous-tic measurements, studies on turbochargers, ... on a full anechoic power train bench.

More specific equipments are available for further expertise : blow by meter, smoke meter, exhaust gas opacity meter, combustion analysis systems (Osiris, Indimodule). Recently, new equipments have been set in our engine department. Two dynamic benches have been set up, acquisition systems have been updated (Puma Open V1.4) and our fuel storage capacity has been increased, making us able to answer to our customers’ expecta-tions. On another side, thanks to its skills, its means diversity and complementarity, the CRITT M2A is developing a research program on correla-tion between gas stand and engine benches studies.

NEW HUMAN RESSOURCES

Since the beginning of 2010, two techni-cians joined the team of CRITT M2A to run engine and turbocharger tests.

Last year, a turbocharger testing expert

arrived and brings now his automotive ex-perience to the CRITT M2A.

Following the studies done for the first step of CISIT program, the CRITT M2A goes further in the project “Engine Cover-ing”, testing new materials with better thermal properties. The centre is now up to start three new research programs, mainly about turbochargers. These programs deal with the improve-ment of vehicles energy management, inside the project “Power train systems”. They should be completed before 2013. - The first one, in partnership with the ENSAM (French engi-neering high school), consists in comparing pulsed air flow measurements on an engine bench with non-pulsed air flow measure-ments on a turbocharger bench. To make this study, the engine bench, the sensors and the acquisition system have to be adapted to enable the comparison. The purpose is to take into account the pulsation and turbocharger environment parameters into each simulation. - The second one, in partnership with both the ENSAM and the LAMIH (Multidisciplinary laboratory of the Univer-

sity of Valenciennes), is meant to answer to hybridization issues, defining technolo-gies of electrical engines control. The CRITT M2A and its partners will de-velop a “turbine bench” thanks to the Turbocharger Test Centre. This bench should enable measurements on a turbo-machine, either producing electricity, or working with it.

- The third research pro-gram aims at developing a “micro-turbo” test rig. Such an equipment repre-sents the possibility to perform studies on smaller turbochargers which are meant to be set up on downsized engines.

The first important step of this program is the definition of the parameters about a reduced sized part. A turbocharger test bench, its sensors and its acquisition sys-tem should be then adapted in order to get more accurate and more reliable re-sults. The CRITT M2A will perform several tests on engine and turbocharger benches to approve each study.
