Bird Notes
The Robin in our gardens:
The Robin is a familiar friend, hopping around in our gardens, eatingfood we provide on bird tables, or through digging the garden. Manyof us come to recognise “our bird”, breeding in our garden every yearand always ready to follow us to the vegetable patch when there isdigging to be done, often over a period of many years.But is it always the same bird? Or is it a different bird behaving in thesame way?With a European breeding population of around 68 million pairs,robins are familiar and common. Robin chicks that leave the nesthave an average life expectancy of around 5 months, but those thatsurvive their first year, are likely to breed in two successive years,with the oldest wild British robin recorded living for 8 years, 4 monthsand 30 days after being ringed by a qualified ringer1.While some robins do stay in the same place all year round, mostBritish robins will migrate to the south west from Britain, with theirterritories being occupied by immigrants from the north east. Somost birds in our gardens in winter will not be the same birds as insummer.

So if the robin in our garden in summer is not the same as the one inwinter, why do they behave in the same way? Robins have evolvedbehaviours that allow them to take advantage of newly turned soil,and will therefore follow a gardener or a wild boar once they havelearnt the signs that suggest digging will take place. All robins willrespond in a similar way.The red breast is used to signal to other birds, using exaggeratedposes to declare dominance, with fights resulting only when one birdrefuses to back down. In winter both male and female robins will singto proclaim their territory, while in spring and summer only the malessing. Unlike many birds, robins will sing at any time, day or night. Inareas with street lighting, singing robins at night are very common.Many people believe only nightingales sing at night, leading toincorrect identification of the songster.
To look out for this month:February is the month when some of our resident birds prepare forbreeding. While blue tits will be singing and finding mates this month,rooks will re-occupy their nests in rookeries (as seen outside Bactonchurch), repairing nests and some early breeders may be sitting oneggs by the end of the month.Long-tailed tits, black, white and pink balls of fluff with very long tails,become more noticeable as the month goes on. The flocks of winterwill break up, as pairs form and establish territories for breeding,often giving short churring calls to each other. Late in February, pairswill start the long process of nest building, using lichens and smallfeathers to form the ball-shaped nest, with the materials being heldtogether with spiders webs. The nest will be lined with feathers andmoss and will hold both parents and up to 8 eggs (usually laid inearly April). As the young grow, the spiders webs will give the nestsufficient elasticity to expand as the young birds grow.In long-tailed tits, young males stay in the area where they hatched,but females move a short-distance (rarely more than 3 miles). Non-breeding birds and unsuccessful breeders will help their relatives toraise their young, with several extra adults commonly feeding theirsiblings’ chicks. As only the males have relatives in the area, thesehelpers are almost exclusively male, recognising their relatives byvoice, having learnt the sounds as chicks in the nest together.Richard Bufton assisted by Cath Lockwood.1. Expensive Christmas?At this time of year, just after the annual spending jamboree known as amodern Christmas, money is often in short supply in many homes. Is itpossible to save money at this time of the year? We know there are salesafter Christmas, but they require us to spend money in order to save. Sohow can we make limited money go further?We have probably all heard of www.comparethemarket.com,www.gocompare.com, www.moneysupermarket.com and others throughthe many television adverts that we see each day. All of these websitesclaim to save us money, and in many cases they can help.Other more basic means of stretching your money, saving yourself moneyand generally easing your finances are available.Energy costs are currently high. Are you paying too much? Confused byyour tariffs? Concerned about switching? The website www.uswitch.commay be confusing as you should understand your electricity bill for bestresults. Switching may save you money, initially, but what about after thehoneymoon is over? Your current energy supplier is also a useful source ofmoney saving. Ringing their customer service department, saying that youare thinking of switching energy provider and asking if they can give you abetter offer can produce savings too. This also saves the hassle ofswitching supplier.Credit card switching can also produce savings with an interest-freeintroductory period. However, frequent switching can adversely affect yourcredit score. Again, ringing your current credit card company and asking ifthey can do anything to help, can be highly productive. They need ourbusiness as much as we need the savings.Other methods can help to spread the cost of Christmas:
1. Plan ahead. Start buying presents now and throughout the year
(avoiding children’s presents in case of a new craze).
2. As shops close down, they often have clearance sales: an excellent
source of bargains.
3. Charity shops can be amazing! Many excellent, highly desirable
items are sold through charity shops, often in excellent condition.
Visit the charity shops in your nearest town with expensive houses.
High value houses are homes to high earners and high-value
donations to charity shops.
4. Christmas foods can often be bought or made early in the year.
Christmas puddings made months in advance and allowed to
mature, have wonderful flavour. Turkey can be bought ahead of the
pre-Christmas price rises and frozen.
5. Think about other sources of food. The milkman can often supply
fruit juices, and even sacks of potatoes that store for months and
mean each pound of spuds is a mere fraction of the cost of large
packs of supermarket potatoes.

6. Make your own Christmas decorations. Children love this! A few
long thin sticks, soaked for a couple of days, twisted into a ring and
adorned with holly, mistletoe and a few cheap off-cuts of ribbon
make a door wreath for pennies. Fir-cones sprayed with a dusting
of gold paint will last for years.
7. Make your Christmas presents. Jams, jellies, framed photographs,
paintings, simple craftwork all make wonderful gifts, keep you
entertained and can be appreciated for years.
However we save money now and over the next year, thought and a littleeffort will save you money, make next Christmas wonderful and allow you torelax and enjoy this major Christian festival in the right spirit.Happy Christmas 2012 to you all! Cath Lockwood

Bacton & Wyverstone Horticultural Society: The Bacton Bullwas the venue for the Christmas meal and Grace was said byPresident Philip Jeffries. Chairman Diane Gladders then kindlypresented Will Gray and Sandra Welham with gifts in appreciation ofpreparing the sausage and mash supper at the AGM. Following anenjoyable three course meal which was rounded off with mince pies,two draws were held.The members draw consisting of cash prizes was won by AnitaKemp, Chris Gunner, Sheila Brown, Carol Barter, Owen Wilson, andPeter Churchyard. A draw with donated prizes from the memberswas also run and Treasurer Anita Leggett was thanked for theorganisation.Members went home armed with their seeds ready for the 2012growing season which were obtained at a discount from SuttonsSeeds by organiser Bryan Symonds.

Around £1000 worth of lead flashing was stolen from the roof of a
school on Tailors Green in Bacton sometime between Friday 16th
December & Tuesday 3rd January. If you noticed any unusual

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2012Bacton & District RBL thank everyone who helped in anyway to raise the grand total of £2755.97 for the AnnualPoppy Appeal in our three villages, this was raised invarious ways, the main ones being house to housecollections, collection tins at our local businesses and
schools, church collections and the Eddie Palfrey Whist Drive. Alsoincluded is money raised by the Women's Section at their Octobermeeting where they held a bring and buy stall and a coffee morningheld at Mayfield Lodge in November. Thanks also to Bacton &Wyverstone Horticultural Society who held a sausage & mashsupper prior to their November meeting in aid of the appeal.
Cotton Village Hall. The main hall has received a new coat of paintover the holiday period, so we are ready to start the New Year with aclean and refreshed looking interior that compliments the workcompleted last year to the kitchen and lobby. The ongoingreplacement of the windows continues with the installing of two newones to the toilets this month. We are in the process of arrangingevents for the forthcoming year so that we are able to undertake therefurbishment of the entire wooden windows eventually, along withrepairs to the external plastering.We would like to express our thanks to the Keepers DaughterTheatre Company after their very comical and original production ofCharles Dickens A Christmas Carol it was an outstanding show onlymarred by a disappointingly low attendance, we only react to thedemands of the village (see Cotton Parish Plan) who want a varietyof different events in the village.This year we are assisting the Cotton Jubilee Party committee in itsendeavours to put on a Free Party day for all ages within the village,more information to follow.John Doherty

In February we celebrate the festival of Candlemas, also calledThe Presentation of the Christchild in the Temple……………..
Now when the time came for the child to be circumcised, hewas called Jesus, the name given to him by the angel before he wasborn. And when the days of purification were over, according to thelaw of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to theLord (as it is written in the law of the Lord “Every firstborn son shallbe called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice according to thatwhich is said in the law of the Lord: “A pair of turtle doves or twoyoung pigeons.”And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, andwho was just and devout. The Holy Spirit was in him, and hadrevealed to him that he should not die before he had seen the Lord’sChrist. The Spirit led him that day to the temple, and when theparents brought Jesus, to do what the law required, Simeon took himup in his arms and blessed God and said: “Lord let now thyservant depart in peace, according to your word. For my eyeshave seen your salvation, which you have prepared before theface of all the people;A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your peopleIsrael.”Joseph and Mary marvelled at all the things which were spoken ofhim. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary: “This child is destinedto bring about the fall and rising again of many in Israel. He shall bea sign against which many shall speak (yes, through him a swordshall pierce your own soul also) that the thoughts of many heartsmay be revealed.
Candlemas is when all the candles used in church are blessed.

LENT IS A CALL TO NEW LIFE
As we move from winter towards spring, and around us innature are signs of new life, we begin the Season of Lent in theChurch on Ash Wednesday, which this year falls on 22nd
February. Catholics observe the day with prayer, a solemn fastand abstinence from eating flesh meat. We will come togetherin church as a Christian community to express our sorrow forour sins and humble ourselves before the God of infinitemercy, receiving ashes on our heads as a sign of ourrepentance.
The forty days of fasting and prayer in Lent remind us of theforty years that the people of Israel, having escaped slaveryand persecution in Egypt, wandered through the wildernessbefore entering the Promised Land of Canaan. The Gospelstell us of the forty days that Jesus spent in prayer in thewilderness at the start of his public ministry, overcoming theDevil’s temptations in the power of the Word of God.
With the same power of God’s grace to help us, we strive toimitate Jesus, to turn away from sin and repent. We want to beready to celebrate during Holy Week the mystery of Jesus’suffering and death in his Passion and at Easter his glorioustriumph over sin and death in rising from the dead.
We will begin Holy Week on Passion Sunday (also called PalmSunday) on 1st April and commemorate the death of Jesus onGood Friday 6th April, another day of solemn fast andabstinence for us Catholics. We will celebrate the Resurrectionof the Lord Jesus on Easter Sunday, 8th April beginning withthe Vigil on Saturday evening.
Masses with the imposition of ashes will be celebrated in OurLady’s Church, Stowmarket on Ash Wednesday, 22nd Februaryat 8.00 and 10.00 am and 7.30 pm.

Village Newsletter - Firstly I would like to apologise for the lack of newslettersbeing printed within our village newsletter, I have had a baby and this hassomewhat taken over events over the last few months. Olivia May arrivedsafely on 22
ndSeptember and is an absolute little gem. Thanks to the
committee and parents for their support and best wishes, hopefully I am nowback on track and we should start to get a bit of routine going again.
Remembrance Day – Thank you to everyone who turned out to parade onRemembrance Sunday. All sections represented were well turned out andwere an absolute credit to 1
stBacton Scout Group.
Scout Sections - We currently have 16 beaver scouts, 14 Cub Scouts, 12Scouts and 6 Explorer Scouts within our scout group. Our Beavers have justcompleted their Friendship challenge badge. Beavers finished term at the endof November due to leaders being absent in the run up to Christmas. Chris &Nikki Reeve are going to be taking over the Beaver section after Christmasand the committee is confident that Alison is leaving Beavers in excellenthands. Our Cubs section has instigated a new parent rota within our cubssection which seems to be working well. BACTON PARISH COUNCIL REPORTThe parish council met on the 12 December 2011.County Councillor Stringer reported that the county council hasagreed to work in partnership with the Museum of East AnglianLife to put the archive and archaeological services on a moresustainable footing. He also mentioned that the county’s highways serviceswould move to a private sector model by 2013. The John Peel Centre hasreceived £500,000 from Biffa subject to further matched funding beingavailable. He reported the recent building works had been completed ontime.District Councillor Stringer reported that the council had been disappointedwith the number of responses to the Budget Challenge and she would begrateful for feedback on how the response rate could be improved in anyfuture consultation. Cllr Stringer reported on various car parking issues inStowmarket and requested that if anyone has any concerns regarding carparking to contact her.Pc Wayman reported there had been no crimes notified since the lastmeeting. She encouraged residents to take appropriate security measuresto protect garages, sheds, workshops and oil tanks. She also remindedpeople that vehicles parked in the open should be in well-lit areas and whengaraged should still be made secure.It was reported that proposals for the signing of Bacton from the A14 hadbeen agreed with representatives of Haughley Parish Council in preparationfor their consideration of the issue at a full parish council meeting.A meeting to outline the plans for the Queen’s Diamond JubileeCelebrations has been held and was well attended. The next meeting is on16 February 2012 at 7.30 pm at Bacton United ’89 Football Club, individualsand village organisations are invited to attend.Planning applications for the erection of a single storey dwelling at 2Oakfield Road, Bacton and an extension at 1 Pretyman Avenue, Bactonwere both supported by the parish council.The next two meetings of the parish council are on 20 February and 19March 2012.

Wyverstone Parish Council met on Jan 3rd

The footpath signshave been repaired at Cutting Hole Arch and Green Lane and negotiationsare taking place with the landowners regarding footpath 21 off Potash Lane.There is a requirement for a volunteer to help with setting up a villageWebsite, if you feel able, please contact clerk on 781343. The BoundaryCommission has acknowledged letter requesting that Wyverstone remain inthe same electoral constituency. A Diamond Jubilee committee has beenset up - watch for news & events (contact Steve on 780001).There is still the possibility of trees for planting, do contact clerk if you areinterested, for those who have replied, you will soon be contacted.SCC have not agreed to the Parish Council request to maintain speed limitof 30 mph from the middle school right through to Church Hill but furtherrequests are to be made. The police reported 2 crimes in the last 2 monthsand again emphasised the need to lock doors of cars and sheds etc. If youneed to speak to police dial 101 but still 999 in case of emergency.E Gale reported on a successful New Year’s Eve party at the village hall.Proposed plans for extending the village hall have been prepared and thecommittee are anxious to hear the opinions of residents. Eddy Gale hascopies of the plans. The precept was set at £3000, the same as last year.It is hoped to acquire a second bottle bank for village hall car park.Helen Hardy has kindly agreed to get brambles cut back that are growingover the footpath on Church Hill. BACTON COMMUNITY MIDDLE SCHOOL2012 has got off to a very positive start at Bacton CommunityMiddle School, with a real determination to be fit and ready forwhat lies ahead of us. In PE lessons pupils have been workingon circuit training and fitness tests; and in response to datagathered from a questionnaire, have been joined by their parents. Ifparents were not sure what happened before in lessons, they certainlyknow now! Fitness and practice paid off for the Under13sTeam who are inthe County Basketball semi-final, after a very convincing win over SamuelWard Academy.
Chef has also been making a big contribution to helping us all have ahealthy lifestyle. Although only starting just before Christmas, he hasalready demonstrated skills in producing a tasty Christmas meal for over270 people, creativity with the menu to celebrate Chinese New Year andhe’s planning opportunities for parents/grandparents to come for lunch.
Can you hear us? Currently we’ve got 152 pupils (37% of the school) doingextra curricular music.
Staff at BCMS have always worked closely with the Primary Schoolteachers to ensure that each child’s “educational journey” is as smooth andsuccessful as possible. As part of this, teachers from the Primary schoolscame to discuss the best ways of marking children’s maths work, so pupilscan make even better progress. Alison Nicholson, Head

A Word from the CurateHave you got your pancake ingredients at the ready? It seems we’vebarely recovered from the Christmas and New Year activities, andalready Lent and Easter are on the horizon! On Pancake Day(Shrove Tuesday) there’s always a debate in our house as towhether they taste better with lemon and sugar or syrup. Which doyou prefer?This year on Shrove Tuesday a Pancake Party is being held atCombs Church Hall, Tuesday 21st February at 7pm to discuss ourcontinuing links with Kagera, following the visit of Darlington andEmilia Bendankeha in October. Entry is free but you will need aticket – please contact me if you would like one.The next day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent when werecall the time that Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted bythe devil. It is customary for Christians to give up something wereally like and give the money we have saved to a good cause. Haveyou thought about what you might do this Lent? I’ll be attempting togive up chocolate and wine, and donate the money saved to WaterAid.On Ash Wednesday it is the custom to begin Lent by being markedin ash with the sign of the cross as a sign of penitence, or sayingsorry, and in the Benefice there are two Ashing Services with HolyCommunion: Wednesday 22nd February at St Mary’s Bacton at10am, and St Mary’s Old Newton at 7 pm.Another aspect of Lent is to read and reflect on the Bible, and we areagain holding our popular Lent courses. People who came last yearreally enjoyed them, so why not come along and give it a try? Youcan choose from: The Gospel according to Winnie the Pooh, starting on Friday

This is lovely to know. All in all, it was a positive result and the Committeefeels confident to progress to the next stage.

A Christmas Carol at Cotton Village HallThe stage was set, the lights turned low, and the audience sitting firmly in theirseats. Let the show commence.Cotton village hall on the eve of Dec 28 was magically transformed.A Christmas Carol was been performed starring two extremely talented andversatile young actors Mark Finbow who also writes and directs and LaurencePears. Both men are professional actors and excelled at their craft.The Production was a huge success with keen audience participation. Cleverchanges of characters and puppetry were used. A most enjoyable andentertaining evening.A Christmas Carol was produced by The Keepers Daughter Theatre companywhich is professional and has hosted workshops for schools and Collegesaround East Anglia. We hope to see more of them in the future.A huge thank you to John Doherty who tirelessly works so hard with his bandof helpers in the organisation of this production.
