The Olympic Games 2012

“Citius, Altius, Fortius”

“Faster, Higher, Stronger”

It is 64 years since Great Britain hosted the Olympic Games. In 1948 they were labelled the ‘Austerity Games’ due to the fact thatBritain was still recovering from the Second World War and foodrationing was still in force – at least we don’t have the rationing now!

The statistics for the 2012 games are mind-blowing…….8.8million tickets covering 670 sessions, 26 sports, 39 disciplines at 34competition venues over 19 days.

The theme for the opening ceremony at the OlympicStadium, Stratford on 27th July has been a closely guarded secret;let’s hope Danny Boyle does Great Britain proud.

Like them or loathe them, the Games are an historic eventand the eyes of the world will be upon us. It is a phenomenal task toorganise and manage. Regretfully, for those who do not like sportthere is no escape. No matter where you go in the world fornineteen days starting from 27th July the Games will be there.

On previous occasions the Games have been used as astage by various factions to make political or ideological statements.Let’s hope this year the Games are free from interruption and allowthe world’s greatest athletes to perform to the best of their abilityand entertain all of us.

Bacton Craft Exhibition

I would like to thank everyone in the village who loaned items for theJubilee Craft Exhibition in Bacton Church.

We had an amazing variety of exhibits – about 120 in all and visitors tothe show were impressed and very complimentary. What a talentedgroup of people we have around here. Sadly only one gentlemansubmitted anything, so if we could arrange another exhibition in say twoyears’ time, you have plenty of advance warning!

If you are interested in sharing your hobbies with others, or needencouragement to finish those UFOs (unfinished objects) whatever thetechnique, how about getting together to form a self-help craft group? There will always be someone who can get you started or sort you out!

Bacton Jubilee Celebrations

My husband and I attended all of the Jubilee Celebrations and would justlike to say a very big thank you to all of those people who made itpossible. We know that these events do not ‘just happen’.

The Showtime was excellent and suited all age groups. The children inthe audience and those who took part were very well behaved. Thebeacon lighting and fireworks were also excellent and the floodlighting ofthe Manor was a sight not to be missed.

The afternoon tea at the Manor was I am sure enjoyed by all. What alovely community spirit there was. – Rita Bonnet

Cotton Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2012

The two marquees, bar and food tents are up along with the bunting andflags, just the seating and gazebos to position then go to bed and prayplease, oh please don’t rain.

Monday 4th JuneIt’s windy but the forecast is No Rain. The playing field and the hall arebuzzing with helpers, mowers are cutting the grass, cakes arrive, mikesand amplifiers are tested, suddenly the wind picks up and we lose twogazebos and as quick as it starts the wind stops, reposition guy ropes, weare ready.Three pm and the field is packed as Helen Fraser our official guest ofhonour arrives in a vintage Jaguar. She congratulates the village for itsmagnificent turnout and set to in choosing a winner in the two age groupsfor the royal themed fancy dress. A very proud, upright soldier and adelightful princess win the lower age group. Henry the eighth and one ofhis wives take the older group prize. On with the races, marshalled with great aplomb by Peter & Katy. Bronze, silver and gold medals are won all afternoon as the many different racestake place. Those who are less energetic make their way to the hall wherefree cream teas are given out by Ann and Barbara’s band of helpers. Morekettles are sought as the two urns can’t keep up with the demand for tea.Cake and scones disappear as soon as they are put on display. GillNichols entertains the hall with popular songs in her ‘Old Time Music Hall’style. Children are turning into Union Jack tigers and many other guises asLauren and Shelly paint faces all afternoon. The hog has been on since twelve and now the lamb is lit. The smells ofboth drift away on the wind while the beer tent with Karen, Sophie and Jois working flat out. After all the races are finished, the band arrives and sets up, while the 16and under commemorative medals are handed out.

The evening gets under way with the band playing a selection of numbersfrom the sixties onwards. The hog and lamb are prodded and poked anddeclared ready to eat. The queue forms and slowly moves forward, thespit roasts are sliced and handed out by Curtis and Max. Both spits havenow finished and all have been fed

We do not know how many peopleattended the day but a conservative estimate of 250 to 300 attended in theafternoon and 300 plus in the evening. As the last revellers walk home attwelve we reflect on a day fit for a queen

We would like to thank the following: - all those who helped erect anddismantle the arena, the helpers on the day, all who gave us the fundingto put on the party, organisations and individuals for the loan ofequipment, and the intrepid band of individuals who formed the JubileeCommittee for the planning and the organising of a Diamond Jubilee Dayto remember.

THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS IN BACTON

On the evening of 4 June the celebrations in Bacton began. The VarietyShow at the Middle School set the scene for the start of two very specialdays where everyone in the village had the opportunity to come togetherand make history in Bacton as the country celebrated the Queen’sDiamond Jubilee.

Cllr Paul Howlett welcomed everyone to the variety show, whereprofessional entertainers, Charlie, Oli Day and Chris North brought showtime to Bacton and wowed the audience with their tremendous skills ofillusion and their magic and mirth. The Variety show audience was joinedby many others from the village on the meadow opposite the Manor for thelighting of the beacon. We estimate about 500 people attended this event,a tremendous turnout at 10 o’clock at night! The beacon was one of 4,200others being lit that night that were registered in a book which will bepresented to the Queen. At precisely 10.15 pm the designated time, thebeacon was lit by the Beacon Master (Cllr Paul Wigglesworth) and withthe enormous full moon rising to the left of the beacon two orange glows litthe sky. The fireworks by Bacton’s own Thunder Burst that followed defydescription as they danced in time with the music – a truly wonderful finaleto the first day of celebrations. As people turned to leave they walkedtowards the Manor which was floodlit and the whole building took on awonderful blue hue!

The next day saw some glimpses of sunshine and thankfully no rain. Atthe Manor the flags and bunting had just the right amount of breeze toshow them at their best, the marquee and side shows were set up aroundthe lawn and the Garden Party opened with the Stowmarket Brass Bandplaying the National Anthem and the Union Flag being raised. Cllr PaulHowlett welcomed everyone to the event and Cllr John Gooderhamhelped us all look back over the last 60 years in Bacton. A lovely afternoonfollowed with villagers of all ages joining in the activities and enjoying thedelicious refreshments. Jubilee coins were presented, the Royal Crownscompetition was judged as was the Fancy Dress Competition of Kings andQueens. Enthusiastic competitors joined in especially Royal themedchildren’s races. A wonderful craft exhibition took place in the church anda photographic display of past celebrations and village events helpedsome reminisce. A dance group also from the village performed a routine.Continued on P.30

IN MEMORY OF TERRY SPALDING

No one knew what a chore it was to edit the parish magazine until the neweditors took over from Terry Spalding. Terry had carried out the task, apparently effortlessly, for 15 years. Terry did not believe in making a fuss, but his contribution to village life was enormous.

Terry came from a Lowestoft fishing family and spent most of his careerteaching meteorology. He ended up as chief weather forecaster atHeathrow Airport. When he and his wife Hazel retired to Bacton, asplanned, in 1996, he immediately engaged with village life. Terry playedan active role on the Parochial Church Council, Deanery Synod, VillageHall Committee, Over 60s, the Local History Society and more recentlyhelped to set up the Bacton Good Neighbours Scheme. His devotion tothe parish magazine was such that he planned holidays to avoid clashingwith the deadlines. Without people like Terry, villages would have nocommunity life.

Terry’s death occurred at a time when he seemed to be recovering frommajor spinal surgery. A great patriot, he had enjoyed watching theJubilee celebrations at the Paddock House nursing home in Eye, in thecompany of his family. He died at Paddock House on June 6, aged 75.Faith was an important part of Terry’s life and he attended both St. Mary’sin Mendlesham and St. Mary’s in Bacton. Services were held for him inboth churches.

Continued from page 29.

In addition to the music played by the brass band, youngsters living inBacton who attend the middle school sang and played their music too.The afternoon concluded with the National Anthem being played and theUnion Flag being lowered.Cllr Philip Jeffries had the idea to celebrate the Jubilee and took the leadin organising all the events, which Cllr Bernard Gant promoted within thevillage. The Parish Council would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to

make the two days such a tremendous success

From the Rectory

Dear All

I was absolutely shattered to be rung up, that Wednesday wheneveryone went back to work after the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend, and told that Terry Spalding had died suddenly in his sleep.

I had no idea, when I took Communion to Terry in Paddock Houseon the Saturday, that it was the last time we would share the HolyMystery together. Terry was on great form – we watched the JubileeDerby on his bedroom TV, prayed, and after Communion he talkedabout all his plans for when he came home. Although the operationto relieve the trapped nerves in his spine had given him a bit moremobility, he seemed to realise that he probably wouldn’t be able toget around much, but he was keen to take his turn at manning theBacton & District Good Neighbour Scheme phone. He had alsostarted making notes for writing down some of his memories –which would have made fascinating reading. On Tuesday he had alovely day with the family around him. He and Hazel watched theJubilee Service in St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Hazel says that whenthe Archbishop gave the blessing at the end, Terry signed himselfwith the cross as if he had been in church. He was a bit sleepy, butvery much himself. Then, somewhere between 4.30 the nextmorning, when the night staff checked on him and he was sleepingpeacefully, and 6.30 when they took in his morning cuppa, Terry leftus. He had lived sixteen years in Bacton and through editing theParish News, organising coach trips, working with the Village HallCommittee, putting up the new bus timetables each time theychanged, and all the other innumerable ways in which he served thecommunity, had made himself very much a part of the life of thisvillage. Our sympathy is with Hazel and all the family as they learnto manage without his lively presence. May he rest in peace andrise in glory.

Yours with love,

Liz Varley

LIGHTING THE WAY

8,000 miles, 70 days: what an incredible journey the Olympic Flame is having onits journey around Britain and Ireland on the way to London! Huge crowds havebeen turning out to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay. They have been lining theroads and streets not just to see the torch and be a part of history but to welcomeand encourage the many incredible people who’ve been selected to carry theflame in short stages. You see them shaking their hands and cheering them on,encouraging them every step of the way.

The whole thing has been great fun with all the different places the Flame hasvisited and unusual modes of transport that have carried it. There have beencelebrities among the torchbearers but the majority have been nominated in theirown communities for extraordinary courage in the face of disability or illness, forgenerosity with time and talents in fundraising or promoting sport or for caring forothers. There’s an amazing range of ages and the nomination stories are verymoving.

The news is so often gloomy: bad news and full of people doing terrible things.

What a contrast to hear of so much goodness and kindness in our country today.

It lifts us up when we see and hear how the human spirit can rise above adversity

and overcome obstacles to show true nobility of soul. The crowds cheered wildly

in Royal Wootton Bassett as 16 year old Ben Fox carried the torch so bravely with

only one leg and the help of his crutch. This is truly Olympic. All these Olympians

are an inspiration.

Father David Finegan.

Junior ChurchSt Swithin’s Day

St Swithin was a Saxon Bishop of Winchester; he was born in theancient kingdom of Wessex and was educated in its capital cityWinchester, which was at the time a very powerful city. He wasknown for being a very holy, kind and generous man giving manycharitable gifts and building churches.

We probably all know the legend of St. Swithin’s Day.

St Swithin’s Day if thou dost rainFor forty days it will remainSt. Swithin’s Day if thou be fairFor forty days ‘twill rain no more

The legend say’s that as Swithin lay dying, he asked to be buriedoutside where he would be rained on and for nine years his wisheswere carried out, but then the monks of Winchester tried to move hisremains to a splendid new shrine inside the cathedral on 15th July971, according to the legend there was a heavy storm during theceremony and this has led to the old wives’ tale that if it rains on St.Swithin’s Day it will rain for forty days afterwards or a fine day will befollowed by forty fine days.

The Met Office has tested this theory on several occasions and ofcourse it is nothing but a myth.

The weather has been very poor this year. The day after a hose pipe banwas introduced it seemed to start raining and doesn't appear to havestopped since. Along with the wet period we've had some low night timetemperatures. Young tender plants could have suffered as a result. However, there is a good supply of bedding plants available in the GardenNurseries for your borders.

Try planting out hanging baskets, fill them with plenty of plants and locatethem in strategic places throughout the garden. A colourful floweringbasket hanging from an apple tree or other structure will draw your eye toanother level in the garden and give interest. One or two tips to be considered: firstly, don't put the baskets in a positionwhere you can walk into them and bang your head when thinking aboutother matters relating to your garden, secondly, position them for easyaccess and allow for watering. I use a fine rose on my watering can.

Hanging baskets will need watering every day and twice a day in the hotweather, if it ever arrives. I water my hanging baskets early morning andlate evening. Any other time the water tends to run off and evaporate notdoing any good for the plants. Also there is a chance of scorching theleaves. Once the hanging baskets become established they will need agood feeding. There are limited nutrients available for the plants, in thebasket planting medium, so we have to provide it.

Try a variety of Pelargonium, or Fuchsia in the centre of the basket. Thenplant multi-coloured Verbena around the centre plant and hanging overthe edge of the basket plant trailing dark blue Lobelia and white alyssum. You can also plant through the moss lining of the basket, ensuring theplant roots are in the basket soil and this will give you a complete coveringof flower and colour. Don't let your baskets dry out and don't forget to feedthem. If these simple rules are followed you will be amazed with thesuccess you will have and your hanging baskets will be a talking point.

Happy Gardening.
