  • As you read this column, our

mission team will be returning from

India. I well remember my own trip

to that great nation in the year 2000.

It was the adventure of a lifetime. It

    changed my perspective on spreading

    the gospel.

The country of India is not an easy

place to visit. Road travel is awful.

No speed limits, no stop signs, few

traffic lights, and a shortage of

taillights. There seem to be few rules

of the road except to blow the horn a

    lot.

    Eating is an adventure. Something

curried comes with each and every

    meal. A hearty breakfast might

include a boiled egg, steamed rice and

    plantains, curried vegetables, coconut

chutney, and roti (the Indian tortilla).

    Beware of drinking the water

anywhere unless it’s boiled or comes

    in a sealed bottle.

It is sometimes said that “half of

India speaks some English,” but don’t

    believe it. Some Indo-English is

    unrecognizable. Hindi and English

are used widely, along with a dozen

    other major regional languages, but

all in all, over 3000 dialects are

    spoken.

    The population density is

    unfathomable. Some states exceed

1500 per square mile. The richest of

the rich and the poorest of the poor co

-exist side by side. And they are all

    religious, many very religious.

Response to a 5:00 a.m. call to prayer

from the mosque or a daily trip to the

Hindu shrine is a lifelong pattern for

    millions.

Yet in the midst of it all, a

    Christian minority thrives!

    Thousands are coming to know

Christ every single day despite real

    persecution in many locales. From

where does this vitality come? The

    priorities of evangelical Christianity

    in India answer the question:

    Worship. Worship is something

more than a weekend ritual or

    a musical exercise. Their

    volume in singing and

    passion in praying give

witness to a deep love for the

Lord that is often absent in

    the West.

    Evangelism. Like their

    counterpart in the US,

    established churches in India

    program ministry but with

    one key difference—

    everything has an evangelistic

    purpose. The arrows point

    outward. No program exists

solely for the happy benefit of

    the baptized.

    Sacrifice. Becoming a Christian

in India carries a social cost.

    The half-hearted soon

    eliminate themselves from the

    fellowship. Full

    commitment is expected.

    The number of young

    professionals willing to use

    their careers to spread the

    gospel made a strong

impression on me. (Continued on Page 2)

Young people. People under age thirty were well

represented in the churches I visited. Our Indian

brothers and sisters seem adept at targeting

younger people in ways appropriate to the culture.

Leader development. The larger churches (100+)

    quickly establish short-term missionary training

schools. Every church is a potential training center.

These schools are energizing a massive church-

planting effort all over the country. As the

leadership base expands, ministry and mission

    multiply.

I returned to America challenged to the core of my

being. I wonder, what would happen if we applied these

principles to our mission here Ohio?

Lenten Fellowship Throughout Lent, the Churches United will be sponsoring a Lenten Fellowship on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Each night will be hosted by a different church. From Our Pastoral Cares Director This past month has brought yet another opportunity to see how God is working in the lives of our people. Several of our members and loved ones are now recuperating from various surgeries and procedures. Once again, I am so impressed by the network of caring people here at Tabernacle who visit, send cards, make phone calls, and pray for those who are hurting in any way.

The information age may be a wonderful thing, but it can never replace a person with a caring heart. In today’s world many receive their information by much more technical ways such as tweeting, emailing, surfing, facebook, texting, Iphone, Ipod, Ipad, and of course, the internet. It’s very easy for me to become totally lost in this new information age, but I think back to a time when some two thousand years

ago five thousand people sat on a rocky hillside and listened by word of mouth to a man speak of things that were very new to their ears. So no matter how far advanced we have become, the question stays the same, “What will you and I do with the message and the messenger?”

May God continue to bless, Tim Mash

February! Hearts, roses and CHOCOLATE. What a fabulous month! Love is in the air! Can you hear it? The music? The theme from the 70’s & 80’s TV show “The Love Boat?” Ummmm . . . okay, maybe not. People long to love and to be loved. Stories and songs have been written for generations about love; however, the greatest love story every written is at our fingertips, calling us to open the book and turn the pages and discover true love. The true love of a faithful God, unfailing, filling you up, overflowing to others. Receive it. Give it. Here is the simple truth. God loves you. Always has. Always will. He loves you personally and passionately. His love is limitless and if we allow Him, He continually fills us so that we can give this love to others. His love flows into us and then it must flow

out in service to others. When it flows out, He fills us up again! The more you give it away, the more you will have. And the more you love others, the more you will be loved. Give it. Receive it. Oh, and by the way. That theme from “The Love Boat?” Here is a line from the song:

Love, life's sweetest reward. Let it flow, it floats back to you.

Receive it. Give it. Receive it.

May God’s love flow through you to others!

    Love and Blessings to All!

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Ever wonder why this world has become so “ME” oriented, or self-centered? We all seem to have such busy schedules and our own agendas that we rarely look beyond our own social circle. I can confidently tell you that God never meant us to live that way. We can dress it up anyway we like, but the truth is that we are striving to create a more comfortable, materialistic, or relaxing world for ourselves. Jesus spent His life serving others, both rich and poor as an example for us to follow. He never said it was an option or a choice. As your child’s ministry director, I take that seriously. That is why each year I offer opportunities for your children to do mission projects so they can practice service. Sadly, it is the least attended of all the events I organize. But those who do attend find it very rewarding. The best way to teach your child to be service-oriented is for you to be actively seeking out ways to serve. Our children learn primarily by example, and they will repeat what they see in us. We serve others in love because Jesus was the ultimate servant, laying down His life as a ransom so that we could experience freedom from sin and have eternal life. With that said I would like to give you and your child the opportunity to spread a little love with an upcoming mission project. With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought it would be nice to treat our guests at the soup kitchen. I hope you can attend. Maybe it will even cause you to want to stop by the soup kitchen and meet a few of our neighbors.

Children’s Mission Project Sunday, February 17th at 6:00

Come help spread the love of Jesus by making

goody bags, cards and placemats for our soup kitchen guests. All ages welcome. We will meet

in the fellowship hall. Come with a joyful heart!

Women’s Retreat 2013 Hey Ladies, does life have you

running in circles? Do you feel

like you’re always too busy? Need

a getaway or a little relaxation?

How about some girl time? Well,

I know where you can get it all. Tickets for the Women’s Retreat go on sale January 20th. You may pay

for your ticket all at once, or you may make payments toward it. The price this year is $96.00. Speak with one of the Women of Clay committee members for details. The retreat will be March 15-17 at Camp Akita.

Man Talk We will once again be having an evening for men. This will be Thursday, February 28th in the

Fellowship Hall. Watch the bulletin for further details as they become

available, but be inviting others now to plan to attend.

Wrestling with God One way Christianity differs from other world religions is how intimately we relate to God, often sparring with Him as we do with close family members. The name Israel, after all, means “God-struggler.” God’s people Israel are named after their ancestor Jacob, who wrestled face to face with God

one entire night and survived—indeed, was blessed. God isn’t distant, refusing to hear complaints or entertain questions. He isn’t even above wrestling back and forth with us over matters of faith and life. God welcomes honest struggles and even presumptuous

requests (such as Jacob’s “Please tell me your name”). Sometimes, as with Jacob’s grandfather, Abraham (Genesis 18:20-32), God even responds to our pleas by changing His mind. Above all, when we engage personally and sincerely in relationship with God, He blesses us.

February Senior Saints’ Luncheon The Senior Saints' Luncheon will be February 27th at noon. The committee will be serving beef stew, biscuits, cole slaw, and fruit salad.

The program will be announced later. You don't have to be a "senior" to come enjoy good food and visit with each other. Please

invite a friend to come with you. Please sign up on the sheet posted in the hallway so we will have enough food prepared for everyone.

    Real Life Happenings……………...Reverend Dave Hirschler

The Dare2Share conference is back in Columbus this year—we’ll be there February 22nd-24th. The theme this year is “Follow.” We’ll be diving into Matthew 4:19, “Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’” One of the reasons Dare2Share is part of our calendar every year is because they do such a great job of not only teaching us how to share the Gospel, but they also teach us how to LIVE the Gospel as well! This is what they say on their website:

Through Dare 2 Share conferences, teens are reconnected with the ultimate cause – Christ’s cause to make disciples who make disciples. It’s a Cause worthy of their very lives and one in which they can find the ultimate adventure, fulfillment, and purpose that they’re seeking. At Dare 2 Share, your students will spend the weekend with thousands of other teens in worship, training, and outreach. They will feel God’s heart for them and for the lost

and will be called into the adventure of a living faith as they witness the power of the gospel.

In addition, we’ll be gathering with American Baptist Youth from all around the state. On Friday evening there will be an after-party held at our hotel. We’ll have pizza, snacks, drinks and TONS of fellowship with our friends from other American Baptist Churches. We have 40 spots reserved, a $50 deposit guarantees your spot, the remaining balance of $80 is due by February 20th. We always have students who cannot afford to attend. If you or your Sunday School class would like to provide a scholarship (full or partial) for a student to attend, please contact Pastor Dave. MANY of our students are able to go at a reduced price because they work in the Café during Upward; however, their hours don’t usually cover the entire amount.
