From the Desk of Father Jon A Month to Prepare

Have you ever noticed how the month of February is a time of preparation? For some it is a time to turn the

soil to prepare a garden. For some it is a time to clean the golf clubs in preparation for spring. For some it is

time to get ready for spring break.

In the Orthodox Church however, it is time to prepare ourselves for the most important journey of the

year. It is time to reflect and reconsider the priorities in this life. It is a time to prepare for Great Lent with all

its blessings and possibilities.

The Church Fathers were extremely wise about this preparation period. They start into the Triodion

Period (the period of the three odes that we chant) with a week that is fast free. The next week the Fathers

deemed that we fast on Wednesday and Friday as we normally do. The next week it is set forth to fast from

meat. And lastly, after the Sunday of Forgiveness, we enter into the Great Lenten journey properly fasting,

praying, repenting and giving alms.

If you really want to help yourself orient your life toward God, I encourage you to open the link below

and listen to and read the words from St. Paisios of the Holy Mountain:

http://youtu.be/o08x3qDL0K8

St. Paisios was recently recognized by our Holy Orthodox Church as a saint. He was a simple and humble

monk of Mount Athos. He was often called the busy bee by the fathers of the Holy Mountain because he went

around gathering the spiritual nectar. This coupled with a life of prayer was made into the blessed honey, that

distilled wisdom that we long for but often do not receive. Listen carefully and all the way to the end if you

desire salvation in Christ!

St. Paisios was canonized by the synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on January 13, 2015. He is re-

membered every year on July 12th in the church calendar as our Venerable Father Paisios the New of the Holy

Mountain. St. Paisios fell asleep in the Lord on July 12, 1994.

May the words of St. Paisios ring true in our ears. I also find that reading the epistle of St. James

(Iakovos), prior to the beginning of Great Lent, very helpful. The epistle is a practical guide to Christian liv-

ing. It is oriented toward acting on our belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of mankind.

I have found several helpful keys to having a blessed Lenten journey over years.

1. Set a reasonable schedule and stick to it with great tenacity.

a. If you already have a well established prayer routine, add just a prayer or two to it.

b. If you do not have a prayer routine, set 5 to 10 minutes in the morning and in the evening

each day when you do not attend a church worship service.

2. Pick an Orthodox spiritual text that is easy to read in a short period of time each day.

a. An example of this is the daily bible readings.

b. If you need a suggested text to read, speak to Fr. Jon about some choices.

3. Pick two services during Great Lent that you have not attended and go to church.

4. Shorten the time you spend on media of all forms, so you can more easily attend to your

spiritual journey.

5. Prepare and go to confession at least once during Great Lent.

6. Lastly, set aside as much time as possible to go to the services of Holy Week and walk with

Christ to Golgotha and ultimately to the Resurrection!

May our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ bless this time of preparation and your entire journey for

Great Lent with healing and peace from above for with Him all things are possible. Love, Fr. Jon

From the Parish Council President

Barbara Reynolds

I am writing this the day before our youth and their families and other church friends leave for the Hellenic

Dance Festival in Charlotte, NC. We have been watching the Romiosini and the Zoyra dance groups practice

all year getting ready for this event. It is a wonderful opportunity for fellowship with their church friends and

other Greek Orthodox youth from around our Metropolis.

February will bring us additional opportunities to grow in our faith. We will welcome Kenny Kidd from the

Orthodox Christian Mission Center who will be with us from Friday February 6 – Sunday, February 8. There

will be a Youth Workshop and Presentation on Friday night, and two Mission Workshops and lunch on Satur-

day. Kenny will also give a presentation at Sunday’s Outreach Family Luncheon. I hope to see you at these

events.

Other important events in February include:

UNCW Intercultural Festival – Saturday, February 14 from 10:00 – 2:00 PM where our church will have a

booth.

AEHPA / Greek School Valentines Dinner Dance – Saturday, February 14 from 7:00 – 11:00 PM

Winter General Assembly meeting on February 22nd where we will finalize our 2015 budget as well as

give important updates on church plans going forward in 2015 and beyond.

Most importantly, in February we will have the four preparatory Sundays before Great Lent (Sunday of the

Tax Collector and the Pharisee, Sunday of the Prodigal Son, Sunday of Meat, Sunday of Cheese) followed by

the start of Great Lent on February 23. Great Lent is an important time for Orthodox Christians. It is a time

of self-examination and preparation and of taking an inventory of one’s inner life.

In Christ’s service,

Barbara

ary 14th from 10AM - 2PM. St. Nicholas will have a

booth displaying various Greek cultural items which

will proudly represent our Hellenic and Orthodox

heritage. Many nationalities participate in the Inter-

ful performances. Don’t miss the performance of our

Romiosini and Zoyra dancers at 10:10AM-10:20AM.

tural Committee-Special Activities.

“I can do things you cannot, you can do things I can-

not; together we can do great things.”

Mother Teresa

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do

small things with great love.”

Mother Teresa

How true these quotes are! Any project that I have

ever embarked on alone, is never as great as a project

done with a group. I love when everyone feeds off

the other and something wonderful materializes!

Such it is with our Sunday Church School!

Our Christmas program was a great success because

of parents like Renee Psilos, Alexia Porzio, Stella

McTaggart, and Kay Skandalakis. Not to mention

all the parents who brought their children to practices,

and helped set up etc. The food was delicious be-

cause of Sue Lawler who catered it.

Our children are making Valentine cards for a project

Kay S. is doing! Teaching generosity, love and kind-

ness is our focus.

Oratorical Festival is coming up on March 1! Please

encourage your child to participate! It is such a re-

warding experience!

Our teachers will be getting together in the month of

February to plan, connect and enjoy each other’s

company. We have such an awesome group of teach-

ers! When you see them, thank them for all they do

for our children!

Remember……….. We need U in C H R C H in

order to be successful and grow in our faith.

Thank you for all you do!

Grateful to be in His service,

Courtney Malahias

Romiosini and Zoyra

Our youth competed at the Hellenic Dance Festival on

Jan 17-18 in Charlotte, North Carolina. What a won-

derful event. Our kids were beautiful and did a won-

derful job representing all of us at St Nicholas. We are

so proud of them. Our heartfelt thanks to Zaharoula

Katsikis for the endless hours of practice to get us to

perfection, and to Nota Dukas for the beautiful cos-

tumes that she has been sewing for the last 5 months.

AXIES!! In addition we came home with the Meritori-

ous Award for the Zoyra and the Folk Expression

Award for the Romiosini Dancers. Thank you to all

our children for their hard work and their parents who

are keeping them involved with the church.

Congratulations to our own

"Spirit Cup" Award winners.

Voted on by the St. Nicholas

participants at HDF, this award

goes to the dancers who show

the most spirit during the week-

end. Let's give a big CON-

GRATULATIONS to Talia Por-

zio (Zoyra) and Zoe McHugh

(Romiosini) for their abundant

spirit!!

For those who couldn't attend HDF, our dancers will

be performing at UNCW's Intercultural Festival on

Feb 14th at 10:10am sharp. Please plan to attend and

support our youth.

Forever Young Stella Vallianos

Forever Young will meet on Tuesday, February 3,

11:00 a.m., at the church. Once again Kay Skandalakis

and friends are going to prepare an early Valentine's

luncheon for us. We greatly appreciate their thought-

fulness and special commitment to Forever Young and

look forward to our February meeting and to seeing

everyone there.

during the week except Mondays, and he is also avail-

able on weekends.

Greek Festival

How can I get involved with the

2015 Greek Festival?

There are so many ways to get involved with our 23rd

Annual Greek Festival. This has become the largest

ethnic festival in the New Hanover County Area and it

can only happen with the collective help from every-

one. We will have volunteer sign up sheets available

and/ or you can attend meetings to see how your help

is needed. You can help in so many different ways…

the important thing is to JUST get involved. It’s a

family affair and everyone in your family can help and

do something.

If you cook or can help with the kitchen prep work,

you can help with everything that is needed to prepare

to feed over 10,000 guests during the 3 day weekend

of May 15, 16 and 17. Help is not just needed the

weekend of the festival, but now, during the planning

stages.

If you can bake, we would love for you to help pre-

pare the pastries.

Don’t like the heat or the noise outside, you can help

make salads or cup pastries, help with church tours,

help in the bookstore, or help with cooking demon-

strations.

Help promote the event to everyone you know; share

our Facebook page to your social media channels.

Help sell ads in our program book…ask your hair

stylist your banker, your local baker, your favorite res-

taurant, auto mechanic, physician…they range from as

low as $100 up to $1500 and at least half of their

money will go back to them with meal tickets, pastry

tickets and admission tickets. Please

consider sponsoring the ad book

yourself. See end of Monthly Bulletin

for order form. And remember this

year’s deadline for the ad book is April

15th…

Sincerely, Your 2015

Festival Committee

Gratitude

For the past five year Emanuel Miliotis has led our

Parish Council and Community in a direction of de-

velopment and growth. Thank you Manny for a job

very well done! May God grant him many years to

continue the Lord's work.

AHEPA

The Brothers of AHEPA’s Cape Fear Chapter No. 408

served a delicious Christmas dinner to the residents of

AHEPA 408 Apartment in December. The meal was

graciously prepared and donated by Chris & Angela

Tsingelis of Angie’s Catering of Chris’ Restaurant.

The youth from our St. Nicholas Parish sang Christ-

mas Carols in both English and Greek and brought

smiles to the faces of all in attendance.

The first Chapter meeting of 2015 will be held on

Sunday, January 25th, at 4:00 PM in the AHEPA

Room on the second floor of the AHEPA 408 Apart-

ments, located at 109 N. Kerr Ave., here, in Wilming-

ton. All Brothers are encouraged to attnd and bring a

prospective member with them.

In February we are looking forward to a visit from

AHEPA’s Supreme President, Brother Philip T. Fran-

gos, and his wife, Tula. A dinner is scheduled in their

honor on Tuesday, February 3rd, at Giorgio’s Italian

Restaurant; all AHEPA Brothers and their spouses or

significant others are asked to attend. Prospective

members are also invited to meet the Supreme Presi-

dent and learn more about the Order of AHEPA .

On the evening of Saturday, February 14th, our

AHEPA Chapter and the St. Nicholas Hellenic School

are co-hosting our Annual Dinner & Dance. It will be

held in the Parish’s Hellenic Center. There will be de-

licious Greek food, live Greek music and plenty of

“Kefi”. (What is Kefi? “On the surface, when a

Greek mentions the word, kefi, they are referring

to: joy, spirit, passion, happiness, triumph, mojo,

excitement, feeling good, having fun, or loving

life.”) Please see our dance flyer in this issue of the

newsletter for additional details.

Plans are being made for a March daytrip to the North

Carolina Museum of Natural History for students of

the Greek School and other interested youth. There is

presently a special exhibit on dinosaurs at the muse-

um. Stay tuned for details.

Thank you to Kay Skandalakis for donating a chil-

dren’s table for the nursery! The children use this

each and every time they are in that room and we

truly appreciate it.

Thank you to all the wonderful parishioners who

donate their time & talent to our Parish everyday.
