Staff from the tourism offices in Chemung, Steuben & Schuyler counties met in January to begin reaching out to travel writers and lining up media tours in the Southern Finger Lakes throughout 2017. In addition to individual writer tours, the three counties will be hosting a week-long group tour in Finger Lakes Wine Country in mid-September.

As in previous years, this season’s tours will focus on unique experiences offered in the region, including: soaring at Harris Hill, glass-blowing at Corning Museum of Glass, hiking at Watkins Glen State Park, paying respects at Mark Twain’s gravesite, kayaking on the Chemung River, sailing on Seneca Lake, wine & beer tasting, and much more. The writers will represent a variety of targeted audiences including family travel, wine & food, outdoor adventure, pet-friendly travel and history & culture.

The Chemung Chamber’s Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) participated in hosting 22 travel writers from across the U.S. and Canada during 2016. The visits resulted in 31 articles and news segments by media outlets that included: U.S. News & World Report, Yahoo! Canada, McCool Travel, Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, Passport Magazine, Roanoke Times and more. The coverage encompassed 23 local tourism businesses.

CareFirst Senior Leadership Transition Planned for 2017

CareFirst, the Southern Tier’s sole not for profit provider of hospice, palliative care, and grief services, proudly announces a strategic transition in leadership for the spring of 2017.

After twenty-two years of dedicated service, CEO Mary Ann Starbuck will retire March 31. Under her leadership, CareFirst has seen extensive growth in programming, advocacy, and legislation. Starbuck plans to remain connected to the organization as a consultant as needed, through 2017.

The Board of Directors of CareFirst is pleased to announce former Board Chair, Jann Cady, RN, will replace Starbuck as CEO. Cady will begin orienting in January with full transition of duties expected in the spring.

Cady brings thirty-five years of clinical nursing experience, twenty-seven years of healthcare leadership, and fifteen years of senior health executive experience to her new role. Most recently, Cady was the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer at Schuyler Hospital. Cady holds an MBA in Finance from Loma Linda University, and a BSN in Nursing from Andrews University. Cady is also pursuing a Masters in Nursing and Informatics from Chamberlain College of Nursing, with an anticipated graduation later this year.

Cady will work closely with the Board, staff, and stakeholders to develop the tenets of CareFirst’s strategic plan as the agency evolves for the future. Cady will join newly appointed Director of Patient Care, Annette Gibson, RN, in building community partnerships that best serve patients and families facing end of life.

CareFirst, formerly Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care, serves families living in Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties who are living with serious illness and grief. While CareFirst’s primary focus is hospice, the agency also offers palliative care, grief services, disease specific programs, and volunteer opportunities.

CareFirst’s administrative headquarters are based in Painted Post, with satellite offices in Elmira, Bath, and Watkins Glen.

Appleridge Donates to Several Local Organizations

Appleridge Senior Living understands the importance of giving back to the community during the holidays and donated $500 to the Horseheads Community Animal Shelter in December. They also donated $1,000 to the Chemung SPCA and $2,500 to Chemung County Meals on Wheels.

The newly formed Horseheads Community Animal Shelter helps find homes for owner-surrendered companion animals, and promotes and supports responsible pet ownership through education, counseling and training. These programs and services are important to the Appleridge community as well as the Horseheads community. The Chemung SPCA helps to find new homes for countless homeless animals every year. The SPCA visits the Appleridge community each month and the residents are delighted to spend time with all the lovable furry friends. Appleridge is also a huge supporter of all the incredible services Chemung County Meals on Wheels provides. The organization is comprised of volunteers and staff that work together to prepare, package and deliver meals to the area's homebound and disabled.

For more information on Appleridge Senior Living, contact Kim Pound, Business Development Manager, 607-767-6190, ext. 6629, or visit their website at www.AppleridgeSeniorLiving.com.
