3. NEW BUSINESS

A. DISCUSS B.O.R. POWERS REGARDING NON COMPLIANTG.A. GROUPS.John C. gave the report which started with reading an email fromDavid M., who had requested the item to be on today’s agenda.“Situation as follows:A room violates the Guidance Code, Article VII, Section 1, whichdefines a group. The room, among other violations of the Unity Steps and GuidanceCode, has been notified that the use of non-GA approved or non-GAappropriate literature, puts the room at risk of being removed as aGamblers Anonymous room. The room members vote to continue this practice, after having beentold of the consequences of such an action. The room will surely be removed as a Gamblers Anonymous room,no doubt with a letter stating so by the ISO.The item I would like discussed is:What legal power does the Board of Regents have and what is itprepared to do if any room continues to function and call itself aGamblers Anonymous room after it receives notice of having beenremoved as a recognized Gamblers Anonymous room.”After a discussion by the Board, it was the consensus that should ameeting continue to call itself a Gamblers Anonymous meetingafter being removed from our International Directory on theGamblers Anonymous website, a Cease & Desist letter would besent to such group in violation. It was also suggested that theExecutive Board of the B.O.T. should review and make recommen-dations to the Board of Regents.

3

B. DISCUSS COMMITTEE FOR SUCCESSION PLAN.John C. requested to form a committee to review a succession plan.Committee members will be Bill B., Peter A., Steve F., Bernie G.and John C. STEP 2

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to anormal way of thinking and living.

Taking Step 1 brought me face to face with the truth. My truth, not yourinterpretation of truth nor their interpretation of truth. After 4 and a half monthsof regular attendance at meetings (regular for me was at least 3 meetings perweek) the search for truth caused a stirring of feelings and emotions in my gut, some of which reminded me of times of uneasiness when I had chosen to gamble.

I tried to define those feelings and finally had to admit to myself that I hadsomehow taught myself how “Not To Feel”. Hence my statement: “Anytime Ihad feelings - Good, Bad, or Indifferent that I could not deal with, I would chooseto escape into gambling”.

I always believed in God, but I had no faith that He could perform miracles. But, taking a good look at the fact that I had not gambled for 6 months was trulya miracle. How could this be? I had tried for years to stop on my own and wasonly successful during interim periods when I ran out of money and/or bailouts.

4

I took another good look at Step 1 and realized that I had so unequivocallyaccepted my powerlessness over gambling that I had truly come to believe thispowerlessness in my gut. That was my first realization of true acceptance.

My immersion in the workings of the fellowship had in effect opened mymind, my heart, and my complete being to the fact that some power greater thanmyself (a power that I choose to called GOD) was indeed working miracles in mylife and in the lives of many other G.A. members around me. A BURST OFFAITH... Step 1 had given me the incentive to be willing to read, look at and tryto apply Step 2 to my life. This combination of both Steps now told me that itwould be idiotic of me not to attempt to apply the same principles to all otherareas of my life: this was confirmed in Step 12.

I was fortunate that at one of my regular meetings we read the completeCombo book every week, then had open discussions about thoughts and feelingsthat might be evoked by the reading. Not only gambling was discussed but amyriad of daily experiences about life in general were brought up. Each meetingadded to the miracles around me and as these took place my faith and trust in myHIGHER POWER flourished and prepared me for Step 3.

GROUP NEWS

Hello Karen,

I can’t believe this is the sixteenth annual Marathon. The day of sharing andcaring was a great success. We had the most attendees and almost all of ourmeetings were there. We had some come from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, from Chilliwack, and from Seattle Washington. We had some wonderfulworkshops and plenty of good food and because it is a pot luck lunch and dinnerthere was a great variety of food.

When Van T. started this Marathon sixteen years ago it was with the thoughtthat the money raised be split between G.A. I.S.O. and Gam-Anon so we arepleased to send you our half of the money raised after all expenses were paid.

Best Regards, Paul N., Surrey, British Columbia

Hi Karen,

The enclosed bank drafts are from the Wednesday and Sunday PGRN inEdmonton, Alberta. Even with the economy we are still thriving. Wednesdaynight can have up to 24 people at times, which leaves us with no chair for anyone.Sunday is starting another year with several core members still attending. Thegreat thing about being a part of these two great meetings for me is that Iconstantly have somewhere to go on these two nights. If I think about gamblingI know I just have to wait a couple of days to get to a meeting. This has been thebest thing for my recovery. Our meetings have so much good recovery that wecan now laugh at our mistakes. It is so nice to laugh when before I couldn’t eventhink let alone laugh. The only emotions I had were so negative and now I justfeel so grateful for everything and everyone in my family. I now have twofamilies; my G.A. family and my real family.

We know that I.S.O. reaches so many countries and so many people that it isalways such a pleasure for us to be able to send money to assist. Unfortunatelywith the exchange it’s not as much as we would like.

With great optimism we will face 2017 and we wish that for every G.A.member.

Best regards, Kelly K., Beaumont, Alberta

Note From I.S.O.: Kelly thank you for your groups donations and sharing howwell the Wednesday and Sunday PGRN meetings are doing. It’s always nice tohear about the successes of “our” meetings.

Dear Karen,

On March 9, 2017, Scott R. will celebrate 25 years in Gamblers Anonymous.Scott came into G.A. in 1992 kicking and screaming, at the age of 21. The“Entourage” as he states, brought him in. Thanks to many New York membersespecially Ron R., he has continued to stay Gamble Free for 25 years.

I personally cannot thank him enough for what he has meant to me andMarlton Gamblers Anonymous.

A tremendous example of the success of the G.A. program, if you give it achance.

Scott is A:Successful SonSuccessful HusbandSuccessful FatherSuccessful BusinessmanAnd a very Successful Friend and G.A. member

Thank you Scott, for your many years of service.

Much Gratitude, Pete S., Marlton, New Jersey

Note From I.S.O.: Pete, thank you for sharing Scott’s upcoming milestone of 25years of abstinence from gambling with us. Your letter is a “tremendous exampleof the success of the G.A. program, if you give it a chance”.

Hi Karen,

Hello from chilly Wisconsin! The Monday Night Group from AuroraPsychiatric Hospital in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin have been saving up for some timeto make a nice Lifeliner donation on behalf of our group. We are sure that it willbe put to good use.

Keep up the great work out there, it is truly appreciated!

Staying clean, One Day at A Time,

Sincerely, Bob O., Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Attention Karen H.,

Please find enclosed our latest group donation from the Thursday Beginner’sGroup in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We take 2 collections at each meeting, onefor the group and one for I.S.O. and at each meeting we pass around an updatedfinancial statement as to what we have on deposit for the group and I.S.O. and atthe end of each meting we announce the amount of the collections. We firmlybelieve this accountability and transparency encourages our members to begenerous in their donations.

We have a lot of newcomers attend our meetings but sadly our retention rateof the newcomers is not high, which is a reflection of how difficult and pervasivecompulsive gambling is for those afflicted with it.

We would like to thank I.S.O. for their efforts on behalf of compulsivegamblers everywhere.

Yours truly, Bruce M., Edmonton, Alberta

In Memory Of…

Dear Karen,

Enclosed please find my personal monthly contribution, the contribution fromBeth Israel Step meeting at 79th Street and a special contribution in honor ofSandy C., who died in the early part of 2017.

10

Sandy was bedridden for most of her later years but she was always workingthe program the best she could. She was the second head of ERIC (EasternRegional Information Center) in the East and worked hard at it. We old timers aregrateful for her contributions to the program.

In Peace and with Love, Max H., New York, New York

Note From I.S.O.: Max, thank you for letting us know about the passing of SandyC. I first met Sandy about 28 years ago at a National Conference. It’s been manyyears since I’ve seen her, but will always remember and appreciate all that shedid for our program.

Dear I.S.O.,

This donation to the International Service Office is to honor our good friendArt A. The Olympia Washington Monday night meeting, Wednesday nightmeeting, and Saturday morning meeting share in remembering and thanking Artfor everything he did over the past many, many years.

Thank you, Art for: sharing your experiences, sharing how G.A. gave youstrength, and how it gave you the hope of recovery. You were there for so manypeople, giving them straight answers, guiding them through some hard times, listening to their stories, leading them along the way to find their own answers. You wrote notes for yourself in every meeting. You kept learning and learning. You were and are still teaching us more about ourselves that we though, we wouldever know.

When you fought in the war in Vietnam you knew you were there for a reason,a deadly serious reason. You came to G.A. with the same attitude. Our battle isnot over, it will never be over. And you, Art, our G.A. brother will never ever beforgotten. Peace.

Alan V., Bucoda, Washington

Note From I.S.O.: Alan, thank you for your letter “honoring your good friend,Art A.”. I had the pleasure of meeting Art at the Vancouver Conference a littleover 3 ½ years ago. We had had several phone conversations prior to that time, and I could finally put a face to the name. Heartfelt condolences go out to hiswife, Sandy, his family and his many friends.
