On April 9, 1786, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach conducted a charity concert in Hamburg featuring three of his finest andmost representative works: the Symphony Wq 183/1, the Magnificat (written in 1749 in the hope of succeeding his fatheras Cantor in Leipzig) and his stupendous 'Heilig' for double choir, of which he wrote, "It will be my swan song of this kind, and will serve to ensure that I shall not soon be forgotten after my death." Released to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the composer's birth, this recording recreating the programme of thishistoric concert confirms the prophetic nature of the composer's words. Hans-Christoph Rademann leads the RIASKammerchor, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and a stellar cast of soloists (including soprano Elizabeth Watts) indefinitive recordings of these fascinating and innovative works.

BEETHOVEN: Piano Trios Op.70 No.2 & Op.97 'Archduke'

Isabelle Faust,Jean-Guihen QueyrasAlexander Melnikov

By giving the stringed instruments the status of genuinely equal partners with the piano, it was Beethoven who gave thepiano trio the form it was to retain throughout the 19th century. This album presents the composer's last two works in thegenre, Op.70 No.2 dedicated to Countess Marie Erdödy, and the celebrated 'Archduke' trio, which marked the final publicappearance of its composer. Three eminent Beethovenians, Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov join forces here inperformances that aim to highlight Beethoven's humour in their interpretation and set a new benchmark in the process.Their next project will be Schumann Piano Trios to be recorded in May and released in 2015.

J.S. BACH: Brandenburg Concertos

Freiburger Barockorchester

Six characters in search of a form

The Brandenburg Concertos need no introduction – doubtless because they owe their fame to a systematic explorationof a genre recently inherited from the Italians, with a still youthful Bach devising as many different scorings as there areconcertos. When he received the manuscript of the six works, Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, must havebeen terrified by their demands, and his musicians even more so! Three centuries later, the cycle is as open as ever to new ‘historically informed’ interpretations, as this set demonstrates. The CD cover represents the importance of numbers in these works eg Concerto No 3 which is scored for threeinstruments, in 3 time, 3 sections etc. The trumpeter is particularly impressive. Freiburg are recording and touring Bachthroughout 2014.

The Sacred Spirit of RussiaGretchaninov / Kastalsky / RachmaninovConspirare

To understand and partake of the 'Sacred Spirit of Russia' requires one, first and foremost, to experience the beauty andsplendour of the Russian Orthodox liturgy, which has been an integral part of the Eastern Slav identity for over 1000years. The sacred music of the New Russian Choral School features sublime settings of the liturgy that draw on a rich history ofOrthodox chants and native traditions, creating music of unprecedented colour and textural richness. Following the leadof Tchaikovsky, composers such as Kastalsky, Gretchaninov, Chesnokov, Rachmaninov and a host of others have left usa treasure-trove of musical delights. Craig Hella Johnson and the 35-strong Conspirare (featuring the astounding basso profundo Glenn Miller) present aglorious sampling of some of the finest works in this genre including Martynov's mesmerising 'Beatitudes' for threesopranos and choir and Kedrov's setting of the Lord's Prayer. Conspirare's esteemed language coach is the editor of Musica Russica, Vladimir Morosan who has also written thebooklet notes. The only 'inauthentic' part of this SACD recording for hm USA is the spot-on intonation.

HAYDN: The SeasonsRené Jacobs

"Haydn was on a roll when he started The Seasons, having just completed The Creation. His unique blend of drama andnaiveté gives rise to music which is at worst charming, and at best overwhelming. René Jacobs shapes a performancewhich is quite brilliant, even by his own high standards. It oozes character and invention – just like the music itself. Thevocal soloists Marlis Petersen, Werner Güra, and Dietrich Henschel complete the cast. There’s not a weak link inearshot." BBC Radio 3, CD Review

“It would be hard to imagine a more joyful account of Haydn's culminating masterpiece. René Jacobs and his outstandingteam perfectly capture the exuberance with which the composer seemed to be defying the years.” Edward Greenfield,Editor’s Choice, Gramophone, Awards issue, 2004

"Not content with winning Gramophone's Record of the Year for his Figaro, René Jacobs turns his loving attention toHaydn's final oratorio. There have been some splendid recordings of this charming, bucolic masterpiece, but none asinfectiously exuberant as this, which is given extra vitality by the richness of Jacobs' period-instrument forces. All thisand his three soloists beat all their rivals, to boot." Andrew Clarke, The Independent, 16-22 October 2004, *****

“Buy a copy and banish Seasonal Affective Disorder for good.” International Record Review, December 2004

“Jacobs seems at the peak of his achievement in the interpretation of the Viennese classics and surely there can be fewsuch comparatively neglected masterpieces that so much call for his enthusiastic advocacy. And who better to cheer thespirits than the ever-inventive and human Haydn?” Alan Blyth, Critics’ Choice, Gramophone, December 2004

Sunday Times Classical CD of the WeekGramophone Editor’s Choice***** Financial Times***** Times

"...but it is Jacobs who makes The Creation sound new-minted, surprising and cutting-edge. His Freiburg musicians havebracing string sounds, wonderfully alfresco, natural-sounding winds and brass; and his professional choir, singing in theirnative language, far outclass their LSO counterparts. With relatively small numbers, the great outburst on the word Licht(Light) in the opening chorus has rarely had the jump-out-of-your-seat effect that it does here. Jacobs’s soloists arewinning, too: Julia Kleiter is a pristine-toned Archangel Gabriel and an innocent Eve, while Johannes Weisser is anall-too-human Adam and a Raphael only slightly gravelly at the bottom of the basso range. Best of all is MaximilianSchmitt’s lyrical and articulate Uriel, one of the finest on disc since Fritz Wunderlich." Hugh Canning, Classical CD of theWeek, Sunday Times, 18 October 2009

"Haydn’s Creation, part-inspired by Handel’s oratorios and sung here in German, represents the summit of hisachievement. At least, that’s how it seems in this glorious performance. Jacobs, directing the Freiburger Barokorchesterand RIAS Kammerchor, underlines Haydn’s purity of vision and wealth of dramatic characterisation, without lettingstylistic correctness get in the way of the music. Johannes Weisser, Maximilian Schmitt and Julia Kleiter are thefresh-voiced soloists." Andrew Clark, Financial Times, 31 October/1 November 2009 *****

"A marvellous performance of Haydn’s oratorio...The conductor Jacobs’s springing gait sets the pace, niftily followed bythe crack musicians of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. Their fruity period instrument colours bring God’s menagerie ofcreatures to thrilling life. Outstanding solo singing too, especially from Johannes Weisser, a Norwegian baritone of greatpotential." Geoff Brown, The Times, 31 October – 6 November 2009 *****

“From the dessicated opening to the luminous explosion of Light and the final blazing celebration of the First Day’s work,it is clear that Rané Jacobs’s Creation is something special… a truly special occasion, a feeling powerfully engenderedby the magnificent recording itself.” International Record Review, November 2009

BRUCKNER: Symphony No 9London Symphony OrchestraBernard Haitink

Bernard Haitink, internationally renowned for his interpretations of Bruckner, returns at the helm of the LSO following hisacclaimed recording for the label of the fourth Symphony.Bruckner’s symphonies are often described as ‘Gothic cathedrals in sound,’ an apt description considering thecomposer’s devout faith and early vocation as an organist. He died before he could finish his 9th Symphony but within itsthree movements can be found some of his most complete music, imbued with a sense of deep solace and resolution.Bernard Haitink’s Beethoven Symphony cycle received the title of Benchmark Beethoven Cycle from BBC MusicMagazine. Haitink has also released a complete Brahms Symphony cycle and Strauss’ 'Eine Alpensinfonie' tointernational acclaim.

"a far-reaching symphonic journey and a special occasion." Classical Source

"Throughout, the LSO played with total conviction, the brass overwhelming in their assault on the shattering climaxes ofthe first movement, the indomitable hammering of a steady-paced and brutal Scherzo, and the final dissonantcatastrophe that crowns the Adagio … It was very moving – indeed, absolutely shattering." bachtrack.com

TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2

Denis MatsuevMariinsky OrchestraValery Gergiev

Since winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Denis Matsuev has established a reputation asone of Russia's leading pianists. His début release on the Mariinsky label featuringRachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 and Paganini Variations, received widespread acclaim. His second Mariinskyrelease featured piano concerts by Shostakovich and Shchedrin, which was awardedClef du Mois by ResMusica and ***** by Audiophile Audition. For his third release, Matsuev turns to the music ofTchaikovsky, with the two Piano Concertos. His first Piano Concerto is one of his most popular works: Tchaikovskybalances core motivic elements with a sense of lyrical spontaneity to create a technically challenging but instantlyappealing work. The Piano Concerto No.2 was dedicated to pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, with whom the composer had a close workingrelationship. Tchaikovsky wrote, “I want to dedicate it to N. G. Rubinstein in recognition of his magnificent playing of myFirst Concerto and of my Sonata, which left me in utter rapture after heperformed it for me in Moscow.” After a tremendous piano cadenza in the first movement, Tchaikovsky allows otherinstruments to shine, with prominent solos for violin and cello in the second movement.Other Tchaikovsky recordings on the Mariinsky label include a DVD/Bluray release of his last three symphonies, and2011 Tchaikovsky Competition winner Daniil Trifonov’s interpretation of the first Piano Concerto on SACD.In March and April Denis Matsuev joins the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev for a European tour, withconcerts in London, Paris and Turin.

"In both these concertos it is hard not to enjoy Denis Matsuev's playing and that of the Mariinsky Orchestra under ValeryGergiev, if only for the sheer enthusiasm and larger-than-life presence. Even in the highly wrought passages in themassive Second Concerto, which he plays in Tchaikovsky's own revision, Matsuev copes with the fistfuls of notes withreal relish, while there's refinement, too, in the slow movement: with its violin and cello solos, it effectively becomes atriple concerto at times." Andrew Clements, The Guardian, Jan 2

Valery Gergiev and Denis Matsuev will feature in the opening ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games on 7February

In the beginning there was great scepticism towards the thesis that Bach’s sacred vocal works were originally written forsolo voices. Now this interpretation is firmly established. With this edition of one cantata for each Sunday and the greatfeasts of the ecclesiastical year Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande strengthen this 'new' approach in their excellentperformances.Vol. 18 offers three cantatas one for the twenty-sixth Sunday after Trinity, one for the sixth Sunday after Trinity and onefor Palmarum. This volume of the complete edition brings the cycle, began in 2005, to a close.

"Among current cantata series Sigiswald Kuijken‘s has a distinctive place, his one-to-a-part voices and few instrumentsachieving striking delicacy. His vocal soloists sing with disarming simplicity and ease in arias, and blend superbly inensemble. MOZART: Piano Concerto KV175, versions for: harpsichord 1773 & fortepiano 1782A lo previdi KV272Arthur Schoonderwoerd

With his recording of two different versions of the Piano Concerto, K175, Arthur Schooderwoerd, one of the mostsought-after interpreters on the fortepiano, presents the third part of his complete recording of Mozart's Piano Concertoson ACCENT. The early version of 1773 is Mozart's first piano concerto. In 1782 he revised the concerto, adapting it to thechanged prevailing taste by replacing the original final movement with a Viennese rondo (K382). Arthur Schoonderwoerdalso takes into account the advance in instrument building with his juxtaposition of these two versions: he uses aharpsichord for the early Salzburg version but plays the later Vienna version on a fortepiano .As in the two previous recordings, Schoonderwoerd and his ensemble Cristofori have set themselves the objective ofliberating Mozart's works from the sound ideals of the 19th and 20th centuries. The string parts in the orchestra have justone player each, resulting in a very slender and transparent sound that supports but never covers up the solo instrument. This recording is completed by the concert aria 'A lo previdi' (K272) for soprano and orchestra, sung by JohannetteZomer.

Child murder, scheming monks and a Tsar lapsing into madness – Modest Mussorgsky spread the thematic arc wide inhis choral opera, which he began to work on from 1868, and with which he attempted to awaken an awareness of hisown time through the indirect route of a historic story. As an artist of the 19th century, he was driven by the psychology of the masses. Thus, in 'Boris Godunov', alongside thehero of the title, the main role is actually taken primarily by the Russian people, rejoicing, starving, demanding andquestioning. In conjuction with conductor Kent Nagano, Spanish stage director Calixto Bieito proposes an original reading of thisbrilliant work. The cast is led by Alexander Tsymbalyuk (Boris), with associates Gerhard Siegel (Schuisky), Markus Eiche(Chelkalov) and Anatoli Kotscherga (Pimen).

When he revived 'Artaserse' by Leonardo Vinci last year, the countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic did not revive just anyforgotten opera, but a work calling for five countertenors. Then, if not before, it must have become clear to everyone howlarge the hype surrounding the countertenor vocal range has become in recent years. This repertoire is suited, like noother, for the display of virtuoso vocal techniques for high male voices. The fact that there remains sufficient magnificent music yet to be discovered in the archives of Rome and Naples isimpressively shown by the present recording of unknown opera arias of Leonardo Vinci. He masters these demandingand highly virtuosic arias with stupendous technique and a wealth of style, accompanied by the ensemble Stile Galanteunder the direction of Stefano Aresi.

Filippo Mineccia began his musical studies as a choirboy at the School of Music of Fiesole. He has appeared in operaticroles in many theatres and festivals throughout Europe and has worked with Il Complesso Barocco, I Turchini, StileGalante, Collegium Marianum, Accademia Bizantina; conducted by Alan Curtis, Antonio Florio, Ottavio Dantone, DiegoFasolis and others. 'Vinci Alto Arias' is his first solo recording.

Abandoned at the age of two months and taken in by the Ospedale della Pietà, Chiara (or Chiaretta) rose – within thatenclosed charitable institution in Venice – to become one of the leading European violinists of the middle of the 18thcentury. No stranger to such acclaim, himself, two and a half centuries later, Fabio Biondi, on his first release for Glossa, has devised a CD drawing on the personal diary of this remarkable musician who was taught by Antonio Vivaldi, andlater became a virtuoso soloist on the violin, as well as the viola d’amore. The programme consists of concertos andsinfonias by composers who, like the prete rosso, taught at the Pietà: Porta, Porpora, Martinelli, Latilla, Perotti andBernasconi are all musicians whose compositions charm and delight as much today as they did in the time of Chiara.Along with this inspired vision-in-sound of the 18th century musical world of the Ospedale comes a half-hour long DVDdramatisation; CD and DVD admirably reflect both the virtuosic skills demanded of the instrumental soloists of the dayand the revolution in musical tastes (inside the Pietà as well as outside it), as the Baroque passed to Classicism via thegalant style.

Includes bonus DVD; ‘Il Diario di Chiara’, a film by Lucrezia Le Moli and Fabio Biondi [32 mins]

CALDARA: RequiemTrio Sonata Op.1/5, Sonata No. 15Missa dolorosa: Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus DeiMusica FioritaDaniela Dolci

Antonio Caldara belongs to the great generation of musicians of the Venetian late Baroque period, born around 1670 inwhich he, himself, and Antonio Lotti excelled in the area of vocal music; Albinoni and Vivaldi in their respectiveinstrumental oeuvres. With an utterly inexhaustible imagination and a profoundly Italian cantabile nature, he alsoachieved the highest degree of representation of emotions, melodic sweetness, sophisticated dissonance and anoperatic element in his sacred works. It is no wonder, therefore, that the Viennese court kapellmeister Johann JosephFux, Caldara's colleague at the Habsburg court, called him a musician "of great virtù and capacity".When exactly and for what occasion Caldara composed his Requiem is unclear. The text of the requiem mass, at anyrate, inspired him to create music of strong character reflecting the gloomy, near-death atmosphere of the text.Particularly characteristic is the dark colouring of the instrumental ensemble. Only in the Tuba mirum does Caldara callfor two trumpets who proclaim the Last Judgement. The manuscript of Caldara's Requiem, which has been handed down in an incomplete state, is preserved in PragueNational Library. This CD is completed by appropriate chamber music by the composer and excerpts from his late 'Missadolorosa'.

In this live recording from May 1979 we can now hear Karajan’s 'Don Carlo' with an absolute dream team, in the four-actversion that he preferred. He had his ideal ensemble of singers at his disposal in Vienna: Mirella Freni as Elisabetta hadalready played a major part in this production’s success in Salzburg. She repeated her triumph in Vienna, offering Verdisinging with a faultless line and just the right flexibility between lyrical and dramatic expression. José Carreras sang thetitle role of Elisabetta’s unlucky lover. His brilliant timbre and introvert expression were perfectly suited to his character,so full of hope and yet so hopelessly dependent on himself alone. His only friend Posa was sung by the leading Italianbaritone of the day, Piero Cappuccilli. Like Freni, he too was regarded as without peer in his role, and with good reason.Agnes Baltsa gave her debut as Eboli, and her mezzosoprano voice possessed both the lightness of touch necessary forher 'Veil Song' but also the power needed for 'O Don fatale'. Matti Salminen as the Grand Inquisitor was at an earlyhighpoint in his career, who would remain at the peak of his profession for many years to come.

SCHNITTKE: Complete Piano MusicSimon Smith

CD1: Piano Sonatas 1-3, Variations CD2: Prelude and Fugue, Improvisation and Fugue, Variations on a Chord Little Piano Pieces, Homage to Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich Five Aphorisms, Sonatina for piano four hands, Cadenza to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 24 in C minor, K491, first movement (1975)Two Cadenzas to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 21 in C major, K467 (1980) Cadenza to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 25 in C major, K503, first movement (1983) Two Cadenzas to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 2 in B flat major, K39 (1990)

Schnittke’s largest works for the piano are the three sonatas, which all date from the later part of his output. PianoSonata No 1 (1987) is a substantial work by any standard, structured in four movements played without a break, andlasting upward of half an hour. The emotional journey of the piece is in many ways typical of the composer’s work in theyears following his first stroke. Piano Sonata No 2 (1990–91), written for Schnittke’s wife Irina, follows a more traditionalthree-movement pattern. The opening is rather sensuous and overtly ‘Romantic’, wistful and bittersweet, its delicatecounterpoint recalling Berg’s Op. 1 Sonata. Piano Sonata No 3 (1992), first performed by Boris Berman in 1996, is anexample of what we might call Schnittke’s ‘late style’, pared down and without the extravagance of some of the works ofthe 1980s though of similar intensity. It was his last work for solo piano. The shorter works included here, which along with the sonatas comprise Schnittke’s entire published output for solopiano (including one piece for piano duet and another for six hands at one instrument), are mostly earlier than thesonatas, and are presented here in chronological order, with the cadenzas for four of Mozart’s piano concertos as a sortof appendix. Simon Smith studied piano with Richard Beauchamp [to whom these discs are dedicated] and composition with TomDavid Wilson. As a pianist he has performed many of the landmarks of the 20th-century piano repertoire, most notablymany of Stockhausen’s Klavierstücke and the Piano Concerto and complete Etudes of György Ligeti. Following aperformance of which latter he was acclaimed as ‘a phenomenon – nothing daunts him, technically or musically’ TheScotsman. For Delphian Records he has recorded solo music by James MacMillan and Stuart MacRae (DelphianDCD34009), Hafliði Hallgrímsson (DCD34051) and Thomas Wilson (DCD34079).

"I remember vividly the first time I heard a piece of music by Schnittke... It is not an exaggeration to say that that momentchanged my life and certainly turned on its head the way that I thought about music and its possibilities. Thereafter Iavidly devoured as much of Schnittke’s music as I could get my hands on, and this recording is one of the results." Simon Smith

"the Quatuor Modigliani relish their Haydn, as the performances of these three works from, respectively, 1797, 1793 and1788 powerfully demonstrate. At first, I wondered if they were sufficiently alive to Haydn’s humour — until the leadermade the grace-note figure in the finale of the Sunrise bray like a donkey. The range of dynamics and colour is wide, therhythmic tension and drive, in the Rider’s finale and elsewhere, superb. They also give the music space, in the Rider’svisionary slow movement and in the deceptively leisurely opening of the Sunrise." David Cairns, Sunday Times

audite’s Eduard Franck series continues with three further chamber works of the composer. A celebrated pianist who, aged only sixteen, accompanied the violin playing of his musical mentor, Felix Mendelssohn, Franck will doubtlessly havehad a special affinity to the genre of the piano trio. This recording of the Trio in E major and the Trios Op. 22 and Op. 53now completes Franck’s contributions to the genre; both the Trio in E major and Op. 53 are première recordings. These works span nearly the entire composing career of Eduard Franck: the E major Trio, written in 1835 when thecomposer was seventeen years old, was both dedicated to, and a birthday present for, his mother.Op. 22 was composed in the 1850s, during Franck’s most successful period, and is the work of an artist who was highlyrespected in German music circles of the mid-nineteenth century. Op. 53, completed in 1886, is one of Franck’s finalworks, providing insights into the late oeuvre of a composer who was always committed to tradition and who must beconsidered as an important representative of nineteenth century music culture.Award-winning audite artists, the acclaimed Swiss Piano Trio complete this segment of the Eduard Franck recordingseries.

Fortuna scherzosa, after Telemann’s eponymous cantata, provides the textual framework for the works recorded here:the subject matter is hope, yearning for fortune, fulfilment and non-fulfilment, happiness and suffering. With her pure, straight and flexible voice, Ina Siedlaczek expresses these diverse emotions with great authenticity. Her music-making ishistorically informed, free and relaxed. Her interpretations are natural and, in the most positive sense, simple.Philipp Heinrich Erlebach's oeuvre comprised hundreds of works in nearly all genres current at the time. During a fire, however, the great majority of his music was lost: only around 70 of Erlebach’s works are known today. The occasion ofthe tercentenary of his death on 17 April 2014 will hopefully make them more famous once again.Johann Ulich was released from complete oblivion only recently when some of his manuscripts were rediscovered. Ulichhad been Kapellmeister at the court of Zerbst between 1708 and 1742, and would therefore have been an accomplishedmusical director and a versatile composer. It is thought that the majority of his oeuvre was lost when the princes’ palaceof Anhalt-Zerbst was destroyed during the Second World War.Georg Philipp Telemann, however, won fame during his lifetime and remains one of the most famous composers of theBaroque era. However his cantata 'Fortuna scherzosa' did not come to light until 1999 when the historic music archive ofthe Berlin Sing-Akademie was rediscovered in Kiev (Ukraine), which included 16 works by Telemann that had, until then, been unknown. At the age of around 23, Johann Philipp Krieger already was Kapellmeister to a margrave; he enjoyed 45 years of employmentas a widely-known and famous Kapellmeister at the art-loving court at Saxe-Weißenfels, leaving behind a legacy of around 2500 compositions. Nonetheless, he is largely forgotten today as only a fraction of his compositions has survived. As a soloist, Ina Siedlaczek is in great demand both as an oratorio singer and as a consort singer. Alongside theclassical oratorio repertoire, one of her particular interests is historically informed interpretation of vocal music of the erabefore Johann Sebastian Bach.

In 'A piacere' Fahmi Alqhai demonstrates once again what an expressive musician he has become, and with the viola dagamba as his “Wondrous Muse”, he recreates for CD a concert programme which he has been touring and refining overrecent years. Following his ensemble album 'Rediscovering Spain' (performed with Accademia del Piacere) this new release from Glossa has a distinctively soloistic feel and approach to it, with Alqhai relishing the different moods and musical directions that his chosen musical “voice” permits him to take.Considering the instrument as so much more than a relic from the decaying aristocratic age of Louis XV in France, Alqhaidemonstrates – by his choice of programme and his playing – the viol’s versatility, flexibility and depth of emotionalresponse: music from Spanish, German and French Baroque masters of the instrument are joined by Alqhai’s ownversion of Joe Satriani's 'Always with me, always with you' rock number. Notably in his Satriani adaptation (but also in anold Spanish popular melody featuring the cantaor Arcángel, as well as elsewhere) Alqhai receives support from musicianfriends gathered at sessions in Seville, all helping to create – in marvellous sound – a new demonstration of the creativefreedom that old music can allow in the right hands.

Johann Gottlieb remained until the end of hislife closely linked to Frederick the Great, as concertmaster and chamber musician. Whilst his brother Carl Heinrichbecame an important figure at the new Berlin Court Opera, Johann Gottlieb strongly influenced the musical life of Berlinand early classicism in general as a violinist and composer. One can no longer determine with any certainty which of the brothers wrote the oboe concertos recorded here – theexisting sources are too unclear and the differences in their personal styles are too slight. What is certain, however, isthat the name "Graun" was a kind of seal of approval in those days for zestful music rich in ideas – an estimation stillvalid today, as is readily apparent when listening to these concertos. The oboist Xenia Löffler has distinguished herself as a specialist for the North German repertoire of this period, as in herrecordings with oboe concertos from the Dresden Court and with works from the Dresden Pisendel Collection (ACC24202 and 24222). Alongside her teaching activities at the Academy of the Arts in Bremen, she is a member of theAkademie für Alte Musik Berlin and in great international demand as a soloist.

Sacred Music for the Poor at Santa Maria in Vallicella, RomeConcerto RomanoAlessandro Quarta

After the downfall of the Roman Empire, the 17th century was in many respects the only epoch in which Rome was amodern city. Unlike today, however, one encountered the most abject poverty in the city centre near the river, namelywhere the danger of high water and flooding was greatest. La Vallicella is a neighbourhood in Rome that still existstoday, centrally located at the bend of the Tiber between the Via Giulia and the shore road Lungotevere Tor di Nona, within sight of the Castle of the Holy Angel and St. Peter’s Cathedral. In the Rome of the Counter Reformation, this areawas overpopulated with people of mostly modest origins; it was noted for its high level of crime and a complete lack offacilities for the assembly and edification of its inhabitants. It was precisely these conditions that caused the priest FilippoNeri (1515-1595), canonised shortly after his death and against his avowed will, to relocate his missionary activities toVallicella during the second half of the 16th century. In the heart of this district, the beautiful church of Santa Maria inVallicella (generally known simply as Chiesa Nuova, or new church) is still very impressive today, as is the prayer hall ofthe Philippian brothers affiliated with it, known as the Oratorium – a centre of liturgy and catechesis, initiated by Nerihimself, in which music played a fundamental role.Rome in those days was not only synonymous with colossal polyphony, multi-choral opulence and concertante virtuosity. In this urban environment with its variety of everyday realities, the Oratorium movement of the Philippian brothers wasone of the most active musical centres. They regarded music as probably the most important medium for thedissemination of their message. Already from the second half of the 16th century onwards, they encouraged andstimulated multifarious and quite specific musical production. In addition, they drew from the ancient, uninterruptedmedieval tradition of lauds and from the early Florentine Renaissance, creating a modernised version of sacred music ingeneral, and ecclesiastical lauds in particular, in the oratoria, churches and streets of the Vallicella district. Thisrepertoire, a link between sophisticated and popular music, represents an important part of Roman cultural history, forming one of the most beautiful points of contact between folk and art music.

Margaret RIZZA: Officium DivinumA Journey through the daily office prayersConvivium Singers

"'Officium Divinum' as an idea was conceived by Tim Ruffer, Head of Publishing at the RSCM. While exploring projects,he came up with the inspiring idea of composing music for the four periods of daily prayer: Morning, Midday, Evening andNight Prayer from the ‘Common Worship, Daily Prayer’. I have always been attracted to and influenced by the Gregorianand Taizé chants, both of which have echoes in my music. The four days recording this album in the beautiful Portsmouth Cathedral were memorable and I want to convey hugethanks to Convivium Singers and the instrumentalists for their strong performances under the inspirational direction ofEamonn Dougan [assistant conductor with The Sixteen]. I have been blessed since 2009 to have had the opportunity to write for the RSCM, an institution which I admire somuch." Margaret Rizza

"But the real crowd-tickler was Violoncelles, vibrez! by the Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima. Cinematic and unashamedlysentimental, it had two solo cellos overlapping in increasingly stratospheric sequences, then furiously egging each otherthrough a rabid double-cadenza...the players (all graduates of the Guildhall School) sounded in a different league fromwhen I heard them last summer.” Richard Morrison, The Times

Stefano GERVASONI: Dir - in dirfor 6 voices and string sextet, descdesesasf (for stringtrio)Exaudi L'Instant Donné

"Dir - in dir" by Stefano Gervasoni for six singing voices and string sextet is based on a text by physician and mysticAngelus Silesius from the 17th century. The composer Stefano Gervasoni, born in 1962 in Bergamo in Northern Italy, in2003 set texts from Silesius's "Cherubinischer Wandersmann" to music and contrasted them a year later with a stringsextet. Also for the second piece on the CD, "descdesesasf", he was inspired by German lyric, Paul Celan's"Atemwende". The central theme in both works is not the accurate composing of exactly sung lyrics, but the resolution, the dwindling away of words in the music until both fuse into an inseparable, almost transcendental whole.Stefano Gervasoni began his compositional studies in 1980, encouraged by Luigi Nono. He read music at the Milanconservatory, with György Ligeti in Hungary and Paris, where he teaches today himself composition at the ConservatoireNational Supérieur de Musique et de Danse. Gervasoni has given numerous courses, for example inDarmstadt, Tokyo, Shanghai, at the Columbia and Harvard University. Important artistic encounters connect him withBrian Ferneyhough, Peter Eötvös and Helmut Lachenmann to name only few.The British Exaudi vocal ensemble that has striven since its foundation in 2002 to perform contemporary music, singswith touching sound beauty and pureness. The international press has enthused: "… the extraordinary ensemble of vocalvirtuosi" (The Sunday Times); "the dazzle of Exaudi's vocal pyrotechnics" (Financial Times) ; or "deftly convincingperformances of dizzyingly complex works" (The Guardian).

Melvyn Poore is a top solo performer, world-renowned interpreter and committed musical mediator. In his work he alwayslooks for new possibilities to extend the potential of his instrument, the tuba. The present CD recording gives an overviewof the current state of the studies of the sound researcher Poore: Apart from a composition of his own, this CD containsfurther works by Georg Katzer, Cort Lippe and Valerio Sannicandro. All pieces were commissioned by KunststiftungNRW and recorded and produced at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics in 2009. In all constellations, Poore ismuch more than an interpreter, he rather is co-creator, designer and technician-performer. In the works, the tuba, interlocked with the live electronics, acts as a meta instrument, while at the same time being the calming influence, thetonally earthy pole of the pieces, no matter whether the works are meticulously fragmented or narratively structured. Inhis work that focusses on the interaction between technology and instrument, as noted by Ludger Brümmer in the CDbooklet, Melvyn Poore is one of the most fascinating artists of contemporary music.
