To date, one of the largest single check presentations to the Conestoga Valley

In fact, it was the sum of 18 families who together have contributed $27,314.05 to the Buckskin Boosters. Their common

bond is that they all hail from CV’s close-knit Southridge Farm neighborhood and all have a stake in seeing the campaign succeed.

“We thought by pooling our money as a neighborhood we would motivate those who might not give to the campaign the opportunity to be a part of this great investment in the community,” says Corey Meyer, a Southfarm resident with two children attending CV. “This campaign is not

administrative services, will present the district’s proposed spending plan for the next school year, including areas being considered for reduction.

The key variable in crafting a spending plan for next year remains Gov. Corbett’s controversial budget proposals. The governor proposed nearly $750,000 in additional funding for Conestoga Valley, but the money is contingent on the Legislature passing his proposed reforms to the state’s pension system and Liquor Control Board.

“The governor is pinning all his numbers on politically controversial items, making budgeting extremely difficult,” Seldomridge said. “Because of the controversy, things will not be resolved quickly.”

Seldomridge will also cover the spike in pension contributions the district is required to make, the rising cost of health care and continued property assessment appeals that are costing the district thousands in lost revenue.

The school board must approve a final budget in June. The state budget is due to be approved June 30.

The forum schedule includes time for public comment and questions. The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the regular school board meeting.

Part of the neighborhood tally includes $14.05 raised by kids in the neighborhood attending

CV schools. The students made the money from a lemonade stand over the summer and decided to donate their earnings to the

campaign.So far, the campaign has

raised more than $333,000 for the Buckskin Booster’s vision to renovate the district’s stadium complex. Plans call for replacing the outdated home-

side bleachers and press box in the stadium and add new concession space. Visitor side bleachers will be upgraded to meet current safety codes. The centerpiece of the project is the installation of a synthetic turf that can absorb more frequent use with less maintenance than natural grass.

The “Sound Mind, Sound Body, Sound Future” capital campaign is designed to benefit the district’s band, field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer and track and field programs. But it will have wider benefits to area youth sports programs, such as soccer and midget football. The venue may also serve to host more community and cultural events, such as marching band competitions. CV already hosted the Keystone Indoor Drill Association’s color guard and percussion competition on Feb. 9 in Rill Gym.

“Organized and well-funded” extracurricular activities and facilities” can

make a signfiicant difference in students’ lives, Meyer said. “If one student stays in school instead of dropping out without a diploma, the money we raise is worth it.”

As of Feb. 27, the “Sound Mind, Sound Body, Sound Future” Capital

Campaign raised $333,089.05 toward its $3.4 million goal.

Community ServantsCommendations to Brownstown students and sixth-grade teacher Marsha Fabian, who raised $1,350 for the St. Jude’s Foundation in their annual Math-a-Thon.

Fritz students and staff inscribed the book Tear Soup and sent a special copy to the students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Fritz students collected 750 canned goods in the school’s annual “Souper Bowl of Caring.”

In the SpotlightCongratulations to the five students who will represent CV in the annual Lancaster County Spelling Bee: Desiree Amewotho (Leola), Ariana Banning (CVMS), Savannah Mead (CVMS), Janae Taft (CVMS) and Christina McBride (BT). Five participants from one district is the most in the county. The winner of the county bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to the following creative writing students who were recently asked to publish their poems for the Creative Communication poetry contest: Adison Swisher (grade 12), Emma Benoit (9), Julie Broomell (9), Diamond Cruz (11), Liam Gilger (10), Joan Miller (10), Cheyenne Norton (9), Alison Shank (9) and Zoe Shelly (9).

Commendations to Mt. Joy CTC and CV senior Jenna Zigrang for winning top honors in the cake-making competition at Chocolatefest in Hershey. Jenna won prettiest cake honors.

Congratulations to all of CV’s participants in the annual Technology Student Association regional conference at CVMS. CV students placed first in 15 different categories, both individual and team. A full list of winners is available HERE. Commendations to CVMS technology education teacher Chris Miller for organizing the conference.

Congratulations to the CVHS indoor percussion ensemble, which placed first in the gold division at a Keystone Indoor Drill Association competition held in Rill Gym Feb. 9. CV’s indoor color guard finished second in the gold division.

Learning HighlightsCV alumna Bianca Dao visited the high school’s AP art class to speak about the AP studio test and her artwork, which was exhibited January in Lancaster. Dao earned a full scholarship to Lock Haven University for the art she created in CV’s AP art program.

Vista School founder Diedre Jarman visited the high school’s child development class to speak about her twin sons’ autism diagnosis. Jarman’s family founded the school, based in Hershey, to prepare children with autism to function in the community with increasing independence.

The CV Freshman Innovations class designed and launched balloon aircraft during their study of supersonic aircraft through NASA Connect’s “Breaking Barriers: Solving Linear Equations” activity. The students learned about NASA’s work and the science and math involved.

Sports Round-UpCommendations to the CV wrestling team and coach Trent Turner for capturing a share of the L-L League Section 2 title, the first in the history of the program.

Senior wrestler Nate Musser, who notched his 100th career victory in December, follows in the

footsteps of his father Cordell, who won 103 dual meets at Garden Spot. The Mussers are just the second father-son duo in Lancaster County history to win 100 bouts each.

Freshman swimmer Tara Raasch broke the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke this year, besting the previous mark by more than a full second.

Congratulations to former superintendent Robert W. Rill for being inducted as part of the charter class into the L-L League Hall of Fame in February.

A Fritz Elementary 4th-grader is the proud owner of a new iPad Mini,

Luke Rumbaugh defeated eight other contestants in Rohrer’s One-Hour Rebound Contest during half time of the

CV Buckskins basketball game Feb. 5.

Break out those running shoes for the annual Buckskin Breakout 5K!

The run/walk and kids fun run will take place Saturday, March 23, beginning at CV Middle School. The course will take runners out Stumptown Road to Mill Creek School Road and back to CVMS.

The race will be professionally timed by Pretzel City Sports and will award trophies for the overall male and female winners as well as plaques for the top three finishers in each age group (13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50+). The top three boys and girls in the kids fun run will also receive a ribbon.

Entry fee is $20 and includes a t-shirt if paid before March 8 (or while supplies last).

Proceeds benefit the Buckskin Boosters, a consortium of CV School

District booster clubs. The Buckskin Boosters’ mission is to provide support in a continuing effort to maintain the high quality of extracurriculuar facilities at CV. The organization is currently leading a capital campaign to renovate the district’s stadium complex.
