Board considering proposals, will decide May 19

When students return to school in the fall, they will see

immediate changes to the high school stadium complex. After the school board meeting on May 19, we will know what those changes are going to be.

The board will vote Monday on renovations to the existing structures, including safety upgrades to the home and visitor bleachers, a new press box and concession stand, new

lights and a synthetic turf field. An additional option would add an access road between the high school and middle school.

If the board approves the project, construction could begin as early as June

Tessa Boppel Didyoung.

Page 9: May 2014 family e news & views 2

As part of the ceremony, four seniors will address their class Three, Tessa Boppel Didyoung , David Kandole and Brooke Mead, auditioned and were selected by a committee of faculty and administrators Class of 2014 president Malia Dickson will also speak

“We usually select two students to speak at graduation, but the committee felt we needed to add one” after listening to the auditions, principal Michael Thornton says “This year, the speeches really came from the heart We were very moved by them”

Kandole’s speech, titled “The Greatness Within You,” is a personal one, drawing on his own story to inspire his classmates to find the strength to succeed by looking inward

“I want to talk about overcoming fears, like I have,” he says “And dreaming, thinking bigger Our world needs us to think bigger, not just be average”

Brooke Mead plans to reflect on the quote attributed to Aristotle, “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”

“I’m comparing high school to a symphony orchestra,” says Mead, an accomplished musician who has twice played in national orchestra ensembles during her time at CV “There is so much diversity here, so many different social groups But when we come together, that’s when we accomplish great things”

Tessa Boppel Didyoung’s speech is entitled “Time is Of the Essence,” and urges classmates to make the time they have She wants to highlight all of the time her classmates put into activities like athletics, music and other activities

A lot of people see the final product, but not all the time we put into those activities,” she says “Being young, people often told us that we are ‘wasting’ our time, but some of those are our best memories”

In delivering the Class President’s Address, Dickson will share the collective career

goals and postsecondary plans for members of the class of 2013 as well as present the class gift She will also have an opportunity to add her own remarks, which she plans to focus on kindness and response to adversity

Students say they feel well-prepared for life after high school

“CV offers so many opportunities that college also has to offer,” Mead says “Being involved in music, I had so many opportunities that I would not have had at a school that did not have as strong of an arts program”

“I don’t think people realize how blessed we are to be at a school like” Conestoga Valley, Kandole says He attended CV for several years, moved to a school and North Carolina and returned for his senior year “Here, you can tell that the teachers want to be here, that teaching is what they want to do, and they want to help you succeed”
