Savour the taste of the Mediterranean, right here on your door-step! We recommend Tuscany Bistro for a mouth-watering meal, an intimate environment and friendly ambience. Choose your Mediter-ranean favourites from their exciting menu! It’s a truly varied selec-tion of classic Italian deliciousness. As for their wines, they’re tried, tested and approved by their customers.

specials menu which is hugely popular but we are known for our pastas. I have to say our desserts are also scrumptious. The crème brulee and chocolate fondante are right up there at the top of my list. What is doing extremely well at the moment is our Great Value Menu which is run daily until 6pm. €20 for a three course meal including a selection of teas and Illy coffees. It is all about value for money without compromising on quality! My perfect meal would be the antipasto for starters, the scallops for main and the fondante for dessert. Heaven!

I hear a lot of people talking about your Amodeo Salad Dressing?

The dressing has just taken off really well. We have even shipped it to people in America. Again our customers inspired us to develop it and thankfully it is now in retail outlets and is expanding its customer base weekly.

Tuscany Bistro is the choice of health-conscious food lovers who enjoy eating where

the staff are passionate about giving customers top value for money. Discover the best fillets in town or tuck into a hearty meal of quality fish! Enjoy a vegetarian dish or superbly fresh salad. Their uncomplicated and colourful recipes are so healthful, always prepared from the freshest and finest genuine Italian ingredients. They also have a huge selection of coeliac friendly dishes. We spoke to the Owner Sabrina Amodeo, who started Tuscany in 2003.

What is your most popular dish?

People like to experiment with flavours and tastes. It’s allowed me the chance to add lots of unusual and flavoursome dishes. Variety is my watchword, and our customers love trying dishes they’ve never heard of. This changes depending on our

I see on facebook you are doing sushi...not very Italian?

I know but there is nowhere in Limerick where I can eat sushi, or anyone else for that matter. So we decided to introduce it on the first Tuesday of the month just to offer our customers who love sushi an opportunity to enjoy it, with Sake of course!

Tell us about your catering division.

It is a huge part of our business. Tuscany offers a full catering service for parties and events for both the corporate and domestic sector. Everything from menu

planning to flowers to clean down. Customers say it is such a relief to let somebody else do all the hard work while they relax and enjoy their special event.

You also have a coffee shop,Caffe Latte, in Killaloe. How’s that going?

Killaloe which is a divinely pretty place will always attract people. Caffe Latte is a fabulous coffee house situated in Convent Hill

which has a great selection of shops, parking and free wifi.We do the best Eggs Benedict in town and the Illy coffee is perfection.

Where do you see Tuscany in a few years?

We have so many exciting plans for both businesses, again inspired by so many different people. There is always talk of expansion and having Tuscanys dotted around Ireland and we are hoping to kick off a cooking

school for mini foodies in the very near future. In the meantime though, we will keep doing what we are doing, which is providing delicious, fresh, high quality dishes at extremely reasonable prices. Newtown Centre,Castletroy, Co LimerickTel: (061) 333 444www.tuscany.ie

the red carpet is rolled out for him in his own right on an international stage. He bursts with an American, sunny sideup enthusiasm especially while talking about his Disney-style crowning in Korea. But how did all this get started? It’s been a long road for the Ard Scoil Ris educated Adonis.A veteran of the catwalk scene in Ireland, Kamal began modelling six years ago with modelling agency extraordinaire; Celia Holman Lee. Sashaying down the catwalks of Ireland:- “I did wedding fair after

wedding fair,”- Kamal quickly got a name for himself with his unique look and wide appeal. “It was a great confidence booster. I learned how to work the stage and with a crowd,” he reveals. It wasn’t his first love, however.“My passion is flying,” says the muti-talented Ibrahim. “I was modelling part time to save to become a pilot. That was the whole reason I was doing it. At 19, I got my pilot licence and the original plan was to become a commercial pilot. I also worked as a nightclub promoter and a

recruitment consultant”.Fate (lucky for his band of adoring fans), intervened however and after winning Mr Ireland in June 2009, a title, he says he “never expected to win” Kamal qualified for the Mr World finals a mere seven months later.“It was the first time they ran Mr Ireland knowing Mr World was taking place,” says Kamal. “It was definitely nice to be the first one”.While the Miss World pageant is known as a hotbed of bitching and backbiting, Kamal is keen to

else that I felt free to be myself. Back then I was hoping to make the Top 15. When I got that I thought, Brilliant, I did what I came here to do. When I got Top 5 I thought there was definitely no way I could win. It was really amazing to hear my name called”. He describes the immediate aftermath of his win as a walk- on- water- feeling, confessing, “When I got to the airport, I turned on my phone for the first time and it would not stop beeping with messages for a full 15 minutes. He reveals he was both proud and thrilled to bring home the win to Limerick. “The response at home was unbelievable.”Flattered by the attention, the sensible star is realistic about the expiration date modelling has, even as the most “desirable man in the world” (Mr World organisers said it, not me!) and the sometimes false media circus which can surround the modelling world.“It’s been a learning curve,

shoot down any MariahCarey-style divadom from the boys; “There was no fakeness at all,” he says.“The competition judges you on everything: - your style, looks, personality, social skills, cooking ability, he continues. It’s physical, it’s very physical,” says Kamal.Dispelling misconceptions about the contest, he describes the experience in a refreshingly honest manner, as more of a boot camp than holiday. This included6 AM wake upcalls, gruelling workouts and day- long interviews all while being watched like a Dairy Milk at a Weight Watchers meeting by everyone from personal security to handlers. He smiles as he remembers the momentous feat of nabbing the crown from a staggering 75 fellow contestants from countries as far-flung as Azerbaijan and Panama.“I was definitely ready,” he says. “I was physically fit and I remember thinking, more than anything

definitely,” he admits.“I have come to see it for what it is which is a platform. I’ve had a lot of ups and a lot of downs”.“It happens so quickly when you are put in that limelight,” he continues. “I never liked it, I hated it and I hate the pretentious stuff even more now”.“Ihave always prided myself on who I am. I don’t sell myself out. You have to find a balance. To find a balance you are going to make enemies. I haven’t made enemies but there are people that don’t like me because I won’t suck up to them. I think I’m ok, I’ve always been grounded.”Far from resting on his beautiful laurels, Kamal is keen to capitalise on his growing exposure, finding a perfect match for his first-class communication skills in TV presenting. He has been slowly but surely making his mark climbing up the media ladder in recent months. But Rome, even when envisioned by determined Kamal, was not built in a day and his realistic

outlook comes through. “As far as the media is concerned, I’m not even on the first rung; I’m climbing onto the first rung,” he reveals, before adding, “I am working hard though, doing what I can, when I can”.10 months after his win in Korea, the model/ presenter/ producer is poised for a bumper year. Topping it all off is the return to Mr World, set to take place in China in March where Kamal will hand over the crown to some other genetically gifted creature while hopefully securing a hosting spot or two.Headmits to the inconvenient truth that to make it in Ireland, you have to make it elsewhere first. “The opportunities are very limited in Ireland. The market is way too small”“If I lived in Korea, I’d be a multi-millionaire by now. I try not to think of what I’ve missed out on so much living in Ireland. Opportunities, money, work that I’ve not had a chance to do because I’m in Ireland.”Now he’s on the path to stardom, which includes the role of ambassador for charity; Variety Ireland, Kamal, like all supervillians has been plotting world domination. Conquering the tough US market is top of the agenda.“I want to present and produce my own shows; I’ve set up my own production company”-Kamal tells me. “I want to follow the same path as Dermot O’ Leary or Ryan Seacrest.”I’ve always been conscious of

what I do and more importantly where am I going,” the ambitious Ibrahim reveals.

“When it comes to the time to hand over

my title I don’t want it to matter. I want to establish myself as Kamal, outside Mr World doing what I do whichis TV presenting. I will still be associated with Mr World and I am so proud to be.”With Chinese New Year fast approaching and the Year of the Golden Tiger almost over, forget the upcoming

year of the Rabbit. 2011 oubtedly heralds the Year of the Kamal. While I head home to watch the box set of Glee under a duvet, Kamal rushes off to a photo shoot in the capital city. Lifestyles of the rich and famous, eh? Watch. this. Space.

cigarettes

These were the must have trendy sweetie when I was about 8 years old and became a bit of an obsession. There

were 3 flavours: chalky sugar, bubblegum and of course my favourite, chocolate, each wrapped in peelable strips of white paper to resemble cigarettes. The sad thing was that we didn’t buy them because they tasted great, if anything they were rather bland. They were more of an accessory, a play thing we used to show off our wish to be “cool”, to be a rebel. There’s nothing cooler than something forbidden. So in a way we were breaking the rules but not really. They went on to be banned in several

countries such as Ireland, Finland, Norway and Saudi Arabia as critics argued that they desensitized children to the habit and would encourage them to become smokers in later life. It’s amazing to think how they got the go ahead to be stocked on the shelves in the first place.

DUCK HUNT

Released in 1984 by Nintendo this game became an instant classic and for most of us was our first experience of a shooter game. You couldn’t go to an arcade and pass up the chance of a game. It can no longer compete with modern gaming advancements which have made games like Call of Duty addictive. Duck Hunt was really simplistic; you held

the gun and shot the birds that appeared on screen. We loved it at the time. Critics panned it for being repetitive and warned that we would be bored after a few games. Uncomplicated as it was it’s appreciated in the industry for its concept and design which changed gaming. IGN announced it as number 77 out of 100 in the “Top Nintendo Games of All Time” list.

Sabrina the

Teenage Witch

This was one of Nickelodeon’s

most popular TV shows in the 90’s. It centred around Sabrina, a teenage witch who lived with her aunts Hilda and Zelda and not forgetting Salem, the talking black cat. In most people’s eyes he was the real star. You either loved or hated this show….I kind of did both. I used to think how lucky this girl was that at the flick of a finger she could have anything or go anywhere. You would think that would guarantee happiness. Nope. All she ever

did was complain about how much of a disaster her life was and how she wished she could be “normal”. What a spoilt brat!! She represented the kind of person we hate most; someone who has everything and still has the cheek to whinge non-stop. As much as I hated her, I still watched the show religiously. Think it was for Salem’s one liners. Hilda : “I haven’t turned myself into wind in years”. Salem : “Would cabbage help?”

LE VERNIS‘LES PERLES DE CHANEL’

There is only one nail varnish colour to be seen in this season and once again, it’s from the great House of Chanel. The new Le Vernis colour, ‘Black Pearl’ is a charcoal black with traces of green to give it its ‘pearl’ luminescence. It is part of the SS11 ‘Les perles de Chanel’ make up range and was featured on the nails of all the models at the SS11 shows. It is due to hit store this February with waiting lists already in place…so get your name down!!!

Available at all Chanel counters.

SKIN ILLUSION FINISH FOUNDATION

The days of heavy, full coverage foundations are over. All the catwalks featured fresh faced, almost bare complexions. From 7th Feb, Clarins are launching their new Skin Illusion Finish foundation. Available in an incredible ten shades, you’re sure to find a match. Karl Lagerfeld recently named Gossip girl star Blake Lively

as the new face of the Chanel ‘Mademoiselle’ handbag line for 2011. In previous interviews, he has described the all-American beauty as his ‘muse’. While there is no question that Lively is one of the most beautiful women in the world, for me, she just doesn’t embody Chanel

whereas her Gossip girl co-star, Leighton Meester, to me, is perfect for the role. She is always elegant, glamorous, and exudes sensuality without feeling the need too have cleavage on show. For me, this is Chanel. Granted the great Coco herself had quite the scandalous love life, but she remained eternally elegant in her style.

To pull off something

similar to the Jersey Shore

look, you have to be a

bit obsessed with your

presentation and maybe get haircuts

3 times a week to properly pull

off the guido look, Pauly D put it:

“I was born and raised a Guido. It’s

just a life style, it’s being Italian, it’s

representing, family, friends, tanning,

gel, everything.” While many of us

might go to the gym on a regular

basis, the spray tan could be a bridge

too far. But that doesn’t mean that

fans of the show can’t try imitating

the Jersey shore guys in terms of

style. Because let’s face it, if you

darker. If you are worried about the

cost, don’t be. High Street Stores

such as River Island and Topman

are picking up on the Jersey Shore

Phenomenon and are beginning to

stock the flashy t-shirts with the

“diamonds” attached. So if you are

to have any hope of resembling

one of the Jersey Shore boys in the

style stakes, be sure to stock up on

the latest trends and brands, Nike

Hi-Tops, Jewellery, Jean Paul Gaultier

Aftershave, cool hairstyle etc, top

all that off with the Jersey Shore

“attitude” and you’ll be good to go!

it’s t-shirt time

watch the show you’ll know that the

lads are always going home with

different girls and women aren’t all

that different even if it is across the

ocean so who knows, try the Jersey

Shore look here and you never know

what might happen.

The main piece of clothing that the

Jersey Shore guys always ensure is

fresh is their t-shirts. The majority

of these are usually bright, flashy

colours and are high end retail

brands. The main brand of choice

is Ed hardy, which can be bought

in Brown Thomas and a couple of

other stores around Limerick. For

With the announcement that Jersey Shore has been approved for

yet another season (this time in Italy), ratings for last week’s show clocked in at 8.7 million people!! This made history as it became MTV’s most watched television series ever. Creators and those involved with the show have been quick to capitalise on the success and have made a deal for a 4th season of the show which is set to take place in Italy with each cast member reportedly being paid $30,000 an episode! Jersey shore is definitely taking over the globe it seems. And now, in case there was a danger they might milk the fame dry, there is a specific Jersey Shore Merchandise store. The site sells workout gear, tank tops, t-shirts, Hoodies....pretty much you name it...its more than likely there! This site is worth logging on to even if your not interested in the clothes and just fancy having a laugh at some of the crazy stuff they are selling with the Jersey Shore name on it. Little big

planet 2

If you’ve played the first LittleBigPlanet, there’s no need to think too hard about buying the sequel. Put simply, LittleBigPlanet 2 turns everything in the first game up to 11. Buy it now!

If you’re unfamiliar with the series, know that it’s one of the best reasons to own a Playstation 3. You play as Sackboy, who can be dressed up in all manner of costumes. The initial stages in this platformer are quite easy, but the gradual addition of obstacles and gadgets makes for increasing challenges throughout the game. The game is heavily integrated with Sony’s online Playstation Network; players can download new costumes, levels and items. They can also play cooperative and versus levels both locally and online.

User-created content is one of the series’ big selling points; there are literally hundreds of player-created levels available to all. It is in this aspect that LittleBigPlanet 2’s depth becomes clear. As you play through the story, you collect items which can be used to create new levels. The game also provides plenty of tutorials to introduce players to level creation. If you get into this aspect, the game’s lifespan is endless. Even taken as a platformer, the game is a worthwhile purchase. Along with the clever level design, its eccentric story (narrated by Stephen Fry) is charming and fun. LittleBigPlanet 2 will stand as one of 2011’s most enjoyable games and is well worth picking up.

dead space 2

Dead Space 2 picks up the story of Isaac Clarke, an unfortunate participant in the events of Dead Space 1, who awakes after three years with few memories. The gore

and action is bumped up a notch. Deaths are as gruesome, if not more so, than ever. Meanwhile, Necromorphs are less likely to drop credits and ammo straight away. Rather than simply pick pocket or loot a corpse, Isaac prefers an old fashioned boot to the head approach to dislodge items of interest. Enhanced technical capabilities and graphical advancements have added to both the suspense and the out right action sides of the game. Shadows warn of impending doom, water drips and blood flows, while some windows can be shattered to end Necromorphs dramatically.

When the enemies come, the action is thick and fast. Rather than suspense throughout, a more action orientated gamestyle has been favoured. At the same time, the game keeps to its core, and provides plenty of startling moments throughout. Once again, nowhere feels truly safe. As is fashionable, multiplayer has been added to try to combat the possibility of trade ins. Thanks to the benchmark set by recent Call of Duty games, new weapons and suits become unlocked as a player levels up. In the various missions, four players play as humans with objectives to complete, while four others play as a selection of Necromorphs who must stand in their way. It is larger than one would expect a tablet to be, but that casing is required to house the power within. It comes with the option of Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors and up to 8GB of RAM. A modular port is also included which can house

anything from an additional hard drive or battery, to a Blu-ray or DVD combo drive.

The LifeBook T730 is user friendly, and the stylus for the touch screen is both responsive and accurate. Multitouch support is also included as users have the option of rotating pictures and zooming with the flick of a finger or a pinch.Fujitsu has primarily aimed this product at business users with its range of options and connectivity measures, but it also comes with a sizeable price tag.

The Dell Streak attempts to bridge the gap between smart phones and tablet PCs with the ability to make calls, access the internet and work on the go. The device is compatible with Android applications such as QuickOffice which can view Microsoft Office documents. Naturally, a host of extras can be downloaded quickly and effortlessly. The Streak is smaller than most tablets with a five inch screen. This enables it to comfortably fit in a pocket, but has blurred the

line between tablet and smart phone. In spite of its diminutive size the Streak makes the most of its screen size, with a sharp display which functions well. While many competitors are

attempting to take on the iPad head on, Dell has taken a slightly different approach. In this way Dell could remove the need for users to possess both a smart phone and a tablet.

The Archos 70 is more of a budget tablet than many others on the market. It does look and feel cheaper than many of its competitors, but as a trade it

costs significantly less too. This tablet is primarily designed for web browsing and movie viewing. The Archos 70 has a

7 inch screen, which is bright and crisp. In addition, there are integrated plastic kickstands to prop the tablet up in order to watch clips or browse the web.The Archos has a particular aim in mind, and accomplishes those duties well. The device will not be a world beater or an iPad killer, but is priced reasonably and knows its limitations. At the same time, there are competitors recognising the value of portability and budgets that may be worth investigating.

While it is yet to hit the market, the Motorola XOOM is sure to make a splash in the near future. It is Motorola’s answer to the Apple iPad and has already gained recognition after picking up the ‘Best in Show’ award at the Consumer Electronics Show.It is the first such device to feature Google’s new Operating System designed specifically for tablets. This enables the device to combine the usability that has become standard for phones with the functionality and capabilities of desktops.

The XOOM will attempt to cater to everyone: from those that enjoy perusing through YouTube clips, those that require the ability to multitask and stay on

top of business commitments, to those that like to capture photos and videos, and share them with the world.

LOVE IS IN... The air?

that goes with it. I love breaking out the old crayons and stencil art to make the ultra romantic card. Hell, I even love writing the odd poem or two. I won’t be doing any of that business this year though, for obvious reasons (unless Anne Hathaway decides we can make a run at it), so what can I look forward to when that crazy Monday rolls around? The answer is unlimited opportunity. Provided the game hasn’t changed since 2007, many single women tend to lose all sense of dignity and decorum as the night progresses. First, they gather like a pack of wolves sipping cocktails, lying to both themselves and each other about how “I don’t need Jimmy, he can have that skinny bitch. She’s not even good-looking.” Later on, however, things start to go south as soon as one of the pack lands a victim. That familiar smell of desperation now begins to linger, like a fart trapped beneath a duvet, and each member of the pack has decided that they will not be spending the night alone, no matter what. The woman has

Valentine’s Day has to be my favourite holiday of the year. I fully believe that it

was invented by men for one simple reason; to give women the impression that they are romantic and compassionate by offering this solitary, meaningless annual gesture while they spend the other 364 days sniffing at the tail of every dog in the street. It’s genius really. But how does this romantic holiday affect the single man?I haven’t been single for a Valentine’s Day since 2007, but this year, I am preparing for the prospect of spending it alone. And, in all honesty, I couldn’t give a squirt of piss. I know single women tend to get their knickers in a twist around this time of year, but I am a man and I can control myself. If there are any self-respecting men who feel an impending doom about being single on 14 February 2011, announce it now and I shall send the Repo-Men for your testicles. I genuinely enjoy Valentine’s Day and all the trimmings/nonsense

now gone full circle, from proud and independent to insecure and loose. I remember my last single Valentine’s as if it were yesterday. We did absolute wreck. I can remember saying outrageous things to women that would usually earn me a firm slap in the puss and watching them lap it up like a Christian on a Sunday. College Road was like a Women’s Mini-Marathon with all the shame walks the following morning. All jokes aside, Valentine’s night is notorious for guys landing birds who, on any other night, wouldn’t even allow him enough face time for the guy to be able to include her in his bedroom solo-missions. One night per year boys, it’s all we get and I’ll be damned if I don’t spend it whispering sweet-nothings into the ear of some little haunt, or two.

That’s right kids….the dreaded V day is coming around again on the 14th. And we at Limelite have decided to give you our take on the day. And just to keep things balanced; it’s only fair that we hear the side of our resident single gal and our visiting single guy.

LOVE IS IN... The air?I think though, my reaction to the card that day was a pretty clear indicator of things to come in the future for me and V day. It’s just not me. You tell me that I have to be all loved up on that day. And when I, like 90% of women out there, am told I have to be a certain way or have to do something, I will go right ahead and do the opposite. What does this generally result in? Restaurants and bars full of couples fighting. Newly purchased lingerie gone to waste, never to be worn again because of the angry memories it evokes. Many boyfriends left to dance the no pants dance alone that night. And single girls like me, at the bar; laughing at aforementioned couples as they storm off with the teddies in hand they bought each other earlier. (Ladies PLEASE take note: No self respecting heterosexual man WANTS a teddy with a heart on its belly)

Going out on Valentines night single is risky business. The hawks are out, scanning the room for the girl whose eyes mist up when a love song comes on. They’re over faster than that crowd in twilight when they’re fighting over that girl that can’t act and blinks excessively. Hawks can be identified by the following

Love is in the air!!! Pass me a sick bag.

Ah Valentines Day. The haemorrhoid of holidays.A time of pointless gifts, embarrassingly soppy cards and obligatory sex. Call me a cynical old bastard if you will (A title I will take with pride) but single or attached, this Hallmark holiday fails to fill me with love and bubbles, as I’m sure it should.

I’ve no doubt I sound like a bitter old spinster, but even in my attached days I hated it. In fact I remember my very first Valentines Day with a boyfriend, getting the first card that wasn’t from my Mam. In it the poor boy wrote, “I think I’m falling in love with you”, and I, as a teenager who watched far too many episodes of Sex and the City and convinced myself that I too, like Carrie, had “commitment issues”, dropped the card and broke up with the poor boy on the spot. Now naturally being 16 we got back together two weeks later and I then fell madly in love with him. And I’m not completely unromantic, I still have the card in a box somewhere, along with the rose he gave me, which, thinking back, I never pressed, so I in fact, have a card that’s now covered in rose mildew. Nice.

traits- Excessive hair gel, poor t-shirt choice, possibly some sort of striped polo shirt, a faint, but distinct odour of cabbage masked only by the criminal level of over-application of some sort of hugo boss aftershave. We all know this guy, we’ve seen him many times, he’s usually lurking around the chippers after town hoping for a last minute desperado shift. I pray to you ladies, if you see him approach, RUN. He is not the one. He’s not even the one for tonight. And you do NOT want to wake up to that face the next morning.

So girls save your dignity, avoid wine, and if you do feel a little pang of loneliness, Ben and Jerriesthe sh*t out if it. At least Ben and Jerry understand what a woman actually wants to put in her mouth and what makes her feel good. Unlike…..you see where I’m going with this.

Now saying all that, I will of COURSE still be waiting on the postman on Monday morning. Just incase. You know yourself.

And Barry’s right. Jimmy CAN have that skinny bitch. Her hair’s rotten anyway.

the French were quiet enough in their victory over the Scottish.

While they did show that they’re very dangerous on the counter-attack, alot of their weaknesses

We are lucky at Munster Rugby in that we have top class strength and

conditioning coaches who advise us and coach us in all these aspects. Over the last number of years I have picked up a lot of various techniques, pointers and tips from many coaches, other players and from my own experience of training on a regular basis. Hopefuly I can pass these on, and they can be of some use to someone out there!

STRENGTH Strength is probably the most obvious attribute people associate with rugby. The common exercises of bench press, back squats and deadlift are a normal part of our weight training programmes. These are done almost every week, or some kind of variation of these exercises. Other resistance training exercises I like doing are the power type exercises. A day or two before a game I

sometimes like doing a good power session. In theses sessions exercises I like, and find the best are; box jumps, squat jumps, hurdle bounds and power cleans. My favourite is the hurdle bounds. With this exercise we use a contact mat to measure our contact times between repeated hurdle bounds. Its always a good motivator to try and beat the other lads on these exercises! On the squat jumps exercises I usually use a 70kg load, squat, hold for two seconds and then jump as high as possible. The speed of the bar is measured during this exercises and is a good indication of power. One important point to note on this exercise is the landing. Its quite easy to hurt your back if you land awkwardly. Always land with soft knees to soak up the impact.

CORE SESSIONS After weights we normally do

Professional Rugby:the training side of things

A major part of being a rugby player is strength and conditioning training. Getting bigger, stronger, faster, fitter, leaner and overall becoming a better athlete is one of the easiest ways to be a better player.

Munster Rugby star Barry Murphy gives us his tips on how to train like a professional to get the most out of your game.

by Barry Murphy

a core session. A strong core is the key to transfering power from lower body to upper, and also to prevent injury. Of course you also get certain players who just want a six pack, definitely not Jerry Flannery! One thing to note is that the outer core (your six pack) abdoninal muscle is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to core work. Exercises like sit-up and crunches all work these, but the underneath layer of core muscles are just as important. We work these a lot with plank exercises, and smaller movement exercises where we hold a position called neutral spine. My top 5 core exercises are: 1. Sit-up 2. Chinnies 3. Medicine Ball Chops 4. Swiss Ball side crunches 5. Plank One other exercise I always include in my core sessions is some balance work. Balance is great for injury prevention “Fact”!

/ february - march 2011

Page 31: February March 2011

31

Professional Rugby:the training side of things

Also I find it helps when doing footwork or changing direction quickly. One exercise I like doing is standing on a wobble board on one leg while throwing a medicine ball, or even a rugby ball would do the trick. Make sure you throw and catch from all directions and angles.

FLEXIBILITY Another part of training that not everyone does regurarly, but probably should is flexibility. I find that if I stay on top of my flexibility I don’t get injured as much in term of muscle tears (obviously impact injuries are a different story!). I do a lot of static strecting in the evenings. It really helps loosen out the muscles and helps them relax. Even when watching TV at night, a few stretches never hurts! I would definitely advise anyone doing any sport to stretch at least twice a week, independently of other sessions, for half an hour.

YOU WILL REAP THE REWARDS

Luckily for us backs leaning up is not normally a problem, instead we are more often than not trying to bulk up. I find that once you have done the correct weights training, diet, recovery and lifestyle play a big part in achieving that goal. Eating regurarly, having correct supplements after training (protein being the most common) sleeping well etc. all help in bulking up. On the other hand for those that need to lose weight one trick I learn’t was doing the odd bike session or run early in the morning before breakfast helps. I am not an expert on this but I believe it works better because the stomach is empty, so the body metabolises fat instead! There’s my science bit done!

THE DIET In terms of a healthy diet, the way I see it is that everyone knows, or has a rough idea about what they should be eating and what they shouldn’t! The trick is sticking to the plan! Obvioulsy the fatty foods like chips, sweets, chrisps, chocolate, takeaways, deep fried and alchol are all to be avoided when trying to lean up. I have heard from some of the forwards that

minimising carbohydrate intake in the evenings helps also. Some alternatives could be an egg white omlette, or try cooking grains like quinea or bulgar. They cook exactly as rice, but have more protein in them and less carbs.

GET HELP Hopefully that might have been of some interest or use! If you do a bit of training and want to improve your overall approach, get some advice, do a few personal training sessions to get yourself kick started. Even do your own research online, there’s a lot of info out there. If you’re changing part of your lifestyle like your diet remember it takes 28 days for it to be a habit, so keep at it. If you’re a young athlete starting out, one thing I would say is make sure you’re enjoying your sport at all times. You can train as a professional, eat, and live like one and somewhere along the way forget why you are doing it! Always remember and make sure that your training and sacraficing for your sport because you love it. Stay positive… Barry

After moving to Camp Colera, we woke at 4:30AM on Thursday 11th of February, ready

for the final push. It took about an hour to prepare our packs and to melt enough snow for a cup of coffee. We set off at 5:30AM. I was completely focused and ready for the climb and I shot off ahead of my group. ‘Conditions are perfect, no excuses, you have to make the summit.

It was pitch black but in the distance ahead I could see a pair of headlamps, and I caught up and passed out two more climbers shortly before reaching the shoulder. Here I met a couple of climbers who had stopped to photograph the sunrise that was just beginning to stain the sky crimson. Watching the sun rise over the Andes that morning is still one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, but I

refused to take a picture and continued ahead. I had taped my camera battery to my chest after it had frozen several days earlier. I couldn’t risk missing out on the all important summit picture. I progressed for several hours, enjoying the challenge of picking out the best route and stopping to load up on precious calories and tea. Eventually I reached the ridge at Independencia Camp and began crossing the traverse.

26 year old Limerick native Mark Quinn is attempting to become the youngest Irish person ever to climb Mt Everest when he tackles the world’s highest peak

I can’t tell you how long it took to make the traverse, the altitude was really taking affect, and it was sometimes hard to keep going on. Freezing winds battered the exposed slope and screamed in my ears. The gravely scree fell away beneath my crampons and plunged hundreds of meters to an unseen fate. Step after exhausted step. Eventually I just watched my feet. Every time I looked up I saw an impossible distance ahead of me. I just watched my feet and eventually the wind died down. I’d made it across! I dragged myself over to a convenient outcrop of rock to sit on and ate further into my supplies. I watched another climber struggle in my shadow along the traverse without envy. When he reached me he looked as shook as I felt. We exchanged food and drink and eventually came right again. My new German friend looked at me with a smirk. “You know, the hardest bit is still ahead.” We both looked to the right and up, to the Caneleta, a thousand foot staircase to the summit. Together we embarked on the final assault. Again, I can’t tell you how long

we were on there. One foot in front of the other. I walked as long as I could, stopped for breath, went again. Every step was a struggle in that final push. One foot in front of the other, until we looked up and there was no more up. Just Andes in every direction, disappearing into the horizon on a beautiful clear day. I checked the time, 10:37AM. We spent twenty minutes on that peak taking pictures and revelling in the moment, but then the descent. The Caneleta took concentration on the way down and at the base we met the first of the climbers behind us, including one of the pair I had started that morning with. She told me that the other had been turned back by the altitude. On the traverse I met Rysiek, who shook my hand and smiled. “I’ll see you in the Himalaya.” I didn’t find out until we were back at camp that we had smashed the average summit time of eight hours. It was an incredible, testing expedition that I am incredibly proud of. However, Aconcagua was only a step on the road to Everest, a road that started three years ago with Carrauntoohil. I’m not sure

what I am now but when I started on this road I was no sportsman, no athlete. To be honest if Aconcagua is the highest mountain I ever summit I will still consider this whole endeavour a hugely fulfilling life experience. Anyone can come this far, you just need to see your goal, see the road and put one foot in front of the other!! CONNOR J RYAN “I once ended up having to send myself flowers to show off to people that I have admirers.”

WILL HICKEY

LITSU President: Will when he was younger was getting ready to dump his girlfriend just before Valentine’s Day but his soon to be single lady had come down with a terrible case of glandular fever. Will being the saint that he is decided to hold off the separation until she was better. One of his friends text him asking had he broken it off his girlfriend to which will replied “no the bitch has the flu i’ll wait till she is better”. His girlfriend must have been on his brain though as he sent the message to her instead of his friend making it very hard for young Will to find a date for Valentine’s Day.

VICTORIA MCCORMAC Victoria arrived into school one Valentine’s day to find a box of chocolates left on her desk. Happy and pleasantly surprised she started tucking into her gift until the mystery man came over to inform her that they weren’t actually for her. Poor Victoria!

BARBARA RONAN Barbara and her boyfriend had broken up just before Valentines. As an obviously well thought out Valentine’s Day attempt to win his fair maiden’s heart back her ex showed up on Barbara’s door step bearing a rather under the weather looking bunch of flowers. After a few minutes of discussion he lovingly informed Barbara “well the girl who sold me these in the garage said you’re a total bitch if you don’t take me back after this”. Needless to say Barbara and her ex were both single for the big day. JULIE NEALON Last year Julie went out and spent all her money getting her boyfriend chocolates, a card, a big teddy and other romantic things only to meet up on Valentine’s Day to find that he had got her absolutely nothing- not even a card... Ouch!! ELYSIA LYONS Elysia has unfortunately never had a Valentine but said the minute she has one she’ll be sure to let us know. CHRISTINE HOGAN Christine’s boyfriend had made great plans for Valentine’s Day only to find that she could not

get the time off work in the Icon. Christine had to spend all Valentine’s Day serving happy couples while her boyfriend sat at home alone…. Awww LISA MULLINS “Last year I bought this guy that I really like a bear that was holding a heart that said Sweetheart, for the fact I called him that... And on the tag it said I wanna be more than friends. I also made him cookies and a single rose. I put it in front of his locker before I went to class…. Then I wondered why he never said thank you... It turned out that somebody had stolen it... It made me soooo mad.” HARRY CLIFTON He went on a romantic trip to London with his girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. They were staying in his brother’s house and were supposed to have his room as he was going to be away. After a romantic dinner and a show they returned to his brother’s house to find he was at home and asleep in bed. Romantic evening ruined!!? Not at all- the couple headed to the couch and decided to get a bit adventurous.. It was all going well until the house mate returned home and walked in to see them in the middle of their Valentine’s Day exercises in the living room. A night to remember anyway…
