Happy Trails Farm Animal SanctuaryA Voice For Those Who Cannot Speak For Themselves

by Annette Fisher, Happy Trails Founder and Director

Witnesses watched in horror as Scarletthe pig fell off a meat truck doing 60 milesper hour on a highway in Trumbull County.Mac, a big Clydesdale draft horse, was 500 lbsunderweight and so weak he could barely hold hishead up. Natasha the goat was discovered aban-doned on the side of a road in Summit Countywhen she was only a day and half old. Five goatswere removed from the basementof a drug house in the city of Cleveland. 31cock-fighting roosters were rescued during an animalfighting raid in Lorain County. Two ten-day-oldbaby calves suffering from malnutrition were notexpected to survive the night. Rachel the pot bellypig had acid burns over 85% of her back andsides.

What do these animals and about 3,000more have in common? Over the past 12 yearsthey have all been rescued and taken to HappyTrails Farm Animal Sanctuary located in Ravenna,

Ohio, forrehabilitationand recovery.

In order toaccept ahorse orother farmanimal intothe HappyTrails rescueprogram ithas to havebeen abused, abandoned orneglected,

and it has to have been removed from its situationby a humane officer or other law enforcementofficial. But that’s not all. We also require that theowner or caretaker has animal cruelty chargesfiled against them.

Why, you ask? Otherwise we would be partof the problem and would be enabling owners tocontinue a cycle of abuse. Otherwise we would berewarding bad behavior by removing all responsi-bility from a person who should be held account-able for the suffering they have inflicted on ahelpless animal.

Part of the role that Happy Trails plays in courtcases is to document all veterinary care and medicalprocedures, provide photos of the animal before, during and after their recovery, give testimony andserve as a witness during the trial, and provide asmuch information as possible to assist with the pros-ecution of thecase. Whenthe court casesare finishedand the animalis signed overto the sanctu-ary, he or sheis then available for adoption as a farm pet. If theanimal has been treated badly enough to find its wayto Happy Trails, it now has a ticket to a kind, caringand compassionate life and will not be placed backinto food production.

Farm animals such as pigs, goats, sheep, poultryand horses are often the types of animal that usuallyfalls through the cracks here in Ohio. Most countyhumane societies don’t have the facilities available toremove a large animal from a situation of abuse orneglect. Some may have never had to deal with afarm animal cruelty case and might not even knowhow to even to care for the animal it removes. That’swhy Happy Trails offers assistance with transporta-tion, foster care, veterinary treatment, court assistanceand eventually, placement of that animal in a perma-nent home.

Happy Trailspromotestreating ALLanimals withkindness andcompassion, andencourages eachcounty in Ohio tobring our stateup to a higherstandard regard-ing the way wetreat and protectour farm animalsand horses.

The inhumane treatment of animals on factoryfarms is one of Ohio’s best kept secrets. Bringingawareness to the cruelties that happen daily toanimals in our food production system enablesconsumers to make wise and compassionatechoices regarding the foods they choose.

Another reason we should take all animal abuseseriously is the safety of our communties. There is acrucial link between animal abuse, domestic vio-lence, child abuse, elder abuse, and other violentcrimes. Many of Happy Trails’ animal abuse caseshave involved other criminal offenses such asstatutory rape, forgery, illegal firearms, underagedrinking, illegal drugs, domestic violence, andreceiving stolen property.

Please consider getting involved with Ohio’sleading animal organization. To learn about the manyvolunteer opportunities, contact us at 330-296-5914or send us an email through the website atwww.happytrailsfarm.org.

Annette Fisher couldn’t believe her eyes when we showed up for a cover shoot at Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary. I think she half expected me to appear in a gown! Photographer, Ken Love and I laughed at the orange ceramic pig sculpture in Annette’s offi ce. The pig was wearing a gold tiara…my

kind of pig! But, the truth was beyond the offi ce, where we toured barns full of animals that had been dreadfully abused and valiantly rescued by Annette and her team. Kelly, of The Hair Specialist in Hudson, styled my hair. She insisted that I let it down and wear jeans! Kelly has a heart for animals and who wouldn’t after seeing so many of God’s precious creatures taken from desperate circumstances and treated…no kidding…like royalty. The crown, I think, belongs to their hero, Annette Fisher. Love her article on pages 2 and 3.

The colder, greyer months of late Fall and Winter were made warmer and oh, so much brighter by the new Cleveland Play House at the Allen Theater. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Play House, the theater masters program of Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University and the powers that be at the Allen theater…all represented by the same architect, another Public Square miracle has emerged.

This is a triumph that Cleveland can celebrate! The transformed Allen theater is gorgeous, unique, and inspiring. I walked into the space with trepidation and was met with a delightful artistic surprise at every turn. The visual effect of a high tech, modern design, juxtaposed against a classic, traditional architecture, is both unexpected and stunning. The design transcends the ordinary, as does the quality of the theater that it houses. The productions being presented there are superb.

I was privileged to see Daddy Long Legs in October, The Games Afoot in November and Ten Chimneys, in January. There was humor, drama, breathtaking sets, top notch costuming, perfect sound, expert directing and professionalism at every turn. Such success in a Cleveland endeavor brings hope to a city with an unrealized grand potential. If all the rest of our city could embrace this level of vision and creativity, we could shine as brightly as any American city and take our bows to a roaring crowd of endless cheers. Bravo, indeed! Read more about the transformation on pp 20. And please, go to see this for yourself. It will make you proud!

Trauma is the Greek word for “wound”. Traumas can be physical, psychologi-cal or emotional in nature. An overwhelming majority of people will experience a potentially traumatic event in their lifetime. Children and adults can experience a trauma so powerful that it produces physical and psy-chological symptoms which make it diffi cult to function well on a daily basis. Feelings of sadness, fatigue, prob-lems sleeping, disruptive and destructive behaviors, concentration diffi culties,

fl ashbacks, anger, aggres-sion, nightmares, headaches, stomach aches, emotional outbursts or emotional shutdown – all these can be the result of experiencing a traumatic event. Without help, these symptoms can continue indefi nitely.

Although a trauma can be a life changing “wounding” event, not everyone has the same response. Sexual or physical abuse, environmen-tal devastation such as a tor-nado or hurricane, exposure to war or domestic violence, accidents or medical prob-lems can have long lasting effects on the individual. The developmental level of the person, his/her cognitive abilities, the type of psycho-

social support and caregiving can mediate the individual’s response to a trauma as well as his/her ability to manage and cope with the symptoms produced by the trauma. Ev-eryone is different.

If, after experiencing a traumatic event, a person fi nds it diffi cult to carry on daily activities because the symptoms disrupt his/her life, it would be helpful to seek the services of a men-tal health professional who has been trained specifi cally to handle traumatic events and who is well versed in an evidence based intervention. Anyone seeking such servic-es should ask to see the cre-dentials and training of the therapist. Akron Children’s

Hospital (330-543-4115) will assess children ages 4-17 and The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress located at Summa Health-care at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron (330-379-5094) will see children and adults. Both can provide an accurate assessment and if needed, the therapy which can allevi-ate or help reduce and better manage the symptoms. It is never too late to seek help.

There is no need to suffer in silence.

Long before Family Chi-ropractic Center opened their doors, they were dedi-cated to doing things differ-ently. They spent countless hours visiting other prac-tices, fi ne tuning what

they wanted, and did not want, within the practice. They have read hundreds of books on health and healing and have looked into doz-ens of fee struc-tures to ensure cost effective-ness. They have i n t e r v i e w e d over one hun-dred communi-ty residents and business own-ers for feedback

before setting up the practice. The

doctors at Family Chiropractic Cen-

ter have researched

articles and journals, studying where health care has been, where it is currently, and where it is go-ing. The results of those efforts are highlighted below.

• Their practice focuses on the whole person. The “whole per-son” does not just mean the body as a whole, but the person’s past health history, lifestyle, stress lev-el and work environment.

• They have set up a fee structure that allows us to give high qual-ity care at an affordable rate. This has been accomplished by keeping our daily business cost to a minimum. No one has ever been turned away for fi nancial reasons.

• Their staff is extremely effi cient and well trained. You will not see four to six staff at their front desk. Each staff person is an ex-tension of the doctors. Their education is based on reading, advanced seminars and fi rsthand experience as patients, before becoming employees. The offi ce

would not exist without such a great staff.

• Family Chiropractic utilizes the specialized form of care called the Gonstead Method, which is used exclusively in the offi ce. This means that the safest, most effective technique will be used on their patients to ensure the best results possible. At Family Chiropractic, their goal is not just to achieve “relief care”…but to achieve “corrective care”

• Their focus is not on pain and symptoms alone. If pain were the main focus, then “pain killers” would be the answer. They look to the cause of the pain, muscles spasms, or infl ammation and not just to cover up the symptoms.

• Every patient is given a plan of care. This plan is based on their particular circumstances. They aim to get people well, then keep people well. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

• Decisions regarding care are

based solely on what the patient needs to be fi xed. They do not let insurance dictate patient’s health care. They have affordable fee structures and hours to accom-modate most schedules.

If you are frustrated with your “health care,” then stop waiting. Dr. Bizjak and Dr. Justice would love to sit down and talk with you about your health concerns and how allowing your body to func-tion properly through Chiropractic care could be the answer for you.

Please feel free to visit their offi ce webpage, www.chiroforfamilies.com for more information. This interactive site offers a wealth of knowledge into Chiropractic, the Gonstead Method, Dr. Bizjak, Dr. Justice, and all of their offi ce infor-mation.

Family Chiropractic also has launched a new webpage www.movetowardwellness.com. This webpage is dedicated to educating patients on a true wellness lifestyle. It is an interactive blogging site that allows doctors, patients and

Thomas Edison once said “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” As Thomas Edison so wisely said, the doctor of the future is one that focuses on prevention and wellness. If your fam-ily is not under any preventive health plan, the time to do so is now. You can decide right now what path to take. It is okay if you are presently on the wrong path, but if you stay there, you are in danger. You can get on the right path any time you choose. You can choose a life of drugs, sickness and disease, or you can choose a life of health, wellness and fulfi llment. The great-est thing about it, is that the choice is YOURS. Have your family’s spine checked for Vertebral Subluxations today with Family Chiropractic Center! You’ll be glad you did.

Below is what Stacey Shoemaker, a current patient, has to say about her experience with Family Chiropractic Center.

What is the Gonstead System And How Does Family Chiropractic of Twinsburg Use It To Change Lives?

I have always been a naturopath. I am someone who looks into natural healing vs medicine and surgery. The pressure and irritation on my nerves had begun to target one whole side of my body because of a sports injury

that had occurred four years ago. The sports injury prompted me to seek help from Family Chiropractic of Twinsburg. After four months of treatment, I am happy to report that my adjustments gave me a new body and a new me. Since receiving treatment I have felt the comfort and the joy again of moving my body without strain. Fixing my spinal and hip alignments have relieved stiffness, headaches, moodiness, tingling, aches, and sharpness in my nerves in the upper-right side of my back and neck. The pressure and irritation on my nerves seemed to move from my brain to my feet on one side of my body. I suffered

from carpal tunnel and very severe foot pain. All of these pains were greatly relieved. Such quick and powerful results were an unexpected delight!

I took Dr. Bizjak’s advice about changing my diet. He wanted me to avoid foods that create infl ammation such as sugar, white fl our, processed foods, dairy, and chocolate. My energy is now free fl owing. Dr. Bizjak and Dr. Justice have naturally helped to prevent further dysfunction and immobility. I am very pleased by their study of my x-rays to see exactly where I’ve needed to have some fi ne tuning, releasing my joints from uncomfortable positions. Their adjustments afforded me a vast improvement.

Regarding health or concerns about how my body may feel from one day to another, both Dr. Paul W. Bizjak, and Dr. Daniel B. Justice, are very willing to answer questions. One of the most stunning results that I experience from this treatment is that the corrections in the neck, upper-back, feet, and hips have started to create a new muscle memory for my body. The knowledge that the doctors have given me about my body and about the way my bones need to move for a free

range of motion, is unbelievable! There is a wealth of knowledge about proper function to be learned from the Family Chiropractic Center.

The offi ce staff often welcomes entire families encouraging them to develop a healthy culture in their homes. Joy, Sue, and Susan get new patients started effi ciently. They direct them into the proper care ranging from chiropractic subluxation, licensed massage therapy, and dry hydrotherapy. The Family Chiropractic Center focuses on a whole body approach and uses the specialized form of care called, “The Gonstead Approach”. This uses x-ray, instrumentation, static/motion palpation, and visualization for the safest most effective techniques to monitor progress during corrective care treatments. For more information about understanding chiropractic care and the nervous system, they welcome all to sign up for the Get Well Faster Classes on Wednesday nights at 6:30. Family members or spouses are recommended to come along to the classes in order to maximize patient treatments. Class members learn about weight management and general wellness practices. The course emphasizes nutrition, exercise, and rest supporting optimal life force.

DO YOU OR YOUR PARTNER EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE

FOLLOWING?

- Loud, excessive snoring, gasping, and/or choking - Excessive daytime sleepiness

- High blood pressure - Memory problems - Morning headaches

- Feeling of depression - Heartburn - Impotence

- Frequent night time urination - Weight gain

- Limited attention - Lethargy

- Poor judgment

If you answered YES to any of the above conditions you could be suffering from a serious, even life-threatening

condition, called…

Sleep Apnea is a sleeping disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during your sleep. These interruptions can range from 10 seconds to 3 minutes long.

When you stop breathing, your body and overall health suffer serious consequences from lack of oxygen! Over 40 million people suffer from sleep apnea and 90% are undiagnosed. Sleep apnea has been linked to an increased risk of health conditions, including stroke, hypertension, and heart attacks. Snoring alone may place unnecessary stress on your relationship. Studies show it may be costing your bed partner 1 to 2 hours of quality sleep a night.

HOW IS SLEEP APNEA DIAGNOSED IN OUR OFFICE?

YOUR PROCESS:

1. Take a short quiz at MySleepTest.com to see if you are at risk. 2. Call our office at 330-688-0888 to set up a sleep apnea

consultation. 3. Dr. Murphy or Dr. DiPiero will determine if you may benefit

from a sleep test. 4. The home sleep test will be conducted and results analyzed.

IN-HOME SLEEP STUDY – At Aesthetic Image Dental we have an in-home sleep apnea study. A home sleep study usually provides a more accurate representation of a patient’s actual sleep pattern versus other methods where you may be required to go to a sleep lab. The in-home sleep study has the advantage of being able to sleep in your own bed. The system is user-friendly, comfortable, and will be explained in our office. You receive the full benefits of a sleep study in the convenience and comfort of your own home. 5. Depending on your specific diagnosis, the best treatment option

will be discussed. 6. If indicated, the doctors will take the necessary records and

measurement to fit you with an oral-appliance to help your condition!

NO CPAP MACHINE REQUIRED

Have you been prescribed a CPAP machine and it is sitting under your bed? You are not alone. Research shows that nearly 50% of people who were prescribed the CPAP machine don’t use it as directed! Instead, Dr. Murphy or Dr. DiPiero may be able to provide you with a custom made oral appliance, which is FDA cleared and covered by most insurance companies.

Hollywood has come to Main Street as women have discovered new ways to enhance their beauty. Hair extensions, straight, white teeth, perfect nails, wrinkle free skin, and the list goes on! We no longer have to travel to Hollywood or New York to avail ourselves of the latest trends. That movie star, bat your eyelashes charm is right here in Cuyahoga Falls at Callatis Spa. Owner, Maria, has added the art of eyelash extension to her repertoire. Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan have them, and J. Lo’s are made of mink. Madonna’s cost 10,000 and are studded with diamonds. We don’t have to go to that

costly extreme to achieve natural looking, beautiful, sexy eyes. At Callatis Spa, Maria uses synthetic single fi ber polyester thread-like materials and applies one to each eyelash with non allergic adhesive using tweezers. Depending on the individual, a full set of extensions are roughly 30-80 lashes per eye. Extensions come in various lengths, colors, and thicknesses, and can be worn during sleep, showering and swimming. Just avoid excessive exposure to oil which can weaken the adhesive bond. The process takes about two hours and can last up to two months. But touch ups are recommended every 2-4 weeks. It really looks better than mascara or the hard look that sometimes

comes from false eyelash strips. They don’t have that dirty, clumpy look. They are fresh and clean, natural and elegant.

Eyelash extensions are becoming so popular that there are some salons booking months in advance. So don’t blink and miss this opportunity to accentuate your natural beauty with longer, thicker, professional eyelash extensions. The results are stunning, red carpet glamorous and truly exciting.

Callatis Spa also offers massage, couples massage, Reiki, Magnetic treatments, products and Microdermabrasion Treatments.

Did you know one in 100 pre-teens suffer from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)? Not only are the numbers staggering, but most of these kids think they are in it alone, because there haven’t been a lot of outlets discussing OCD in preteens. This was true until the world was introduced to Cinnamon and her story, Stuck. Cinnamon is a smart seven-year-old girl, who like a lot of kids enjoys playing and learning new things. The difference between her and some other kids is that sometimes she gets Stuck.

Written by Rhonda Martin, M.A., Stuck is an entertaining and educational children’s book about a seven-year-old girl living with OCD Cinnamon gets Stuck on things like making sure her hands are clean, the usage of words and saying goodbye to her parents. It’s hard for her to let these things go, but she’s trying and with the support of her parents reminding her getting Stuck isn’t her fault, she learning to live with OCD. Plus, she knows it isn’t always bad to be Stuck.

Widely considered an expert in her fi eld, Rhonda Martin is a licensed clinical counselor and has extensive experience with children who have anxiety disorders. Her experience, knowledge and passion to help kids with OCD makes Stuck a must read for any family trying to fi gure out what is next in the journey that is OCD and for families who’ve dealt with OCD, Stuck reminds them that they are not facing it alone.

Rhonda C. Martin is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a Board Certifi cation in Professional Counseling. She has been designated a diplomat for her work in Pediatric Clinical Counseling with children who have OCD and other anxiety disorders.

Dee Siegferth, President of The Milestone Center for Retirement & Estate Planning, LLC., takes a special interest in empowering women to move forward and “take control” of their futures by taking the important steps needed to ensure that they will have enough money to last through retirement and that what they want for themselves and their families can actually be a reality.

Dee spends time providing educational workshops to women at all stages of their lives focusing on “Taking Control of their Lives” and building a “Complete Retirement Protection Roadmap” to have a safe and secure retirement and protecting women from making common mistakes!

Put Off Plans for their Own Futures Dee believes that women are great planners,

managers and organizers: but many women put off actually taking the time to develop their own foolproof “Retirement Roadmap” checklist for their own Future and their loved ones after they pass? Women need planning the most. Why? Women live longer than men; and they may have earned less money than men. In addition, women may not have been in charge of their investments, legal documents, or insurance needs.

Avoiding Mistakes Dee believes that knowledge gives Women the

control they need to avoid most of the signifi cant problems and catastrophes during their lives. The problem is most people just do not know that they haven’t made their own personal protection plan. Dee believes Women can Be in the Know! For example, women need to be informed about what important documents they need completed; how to make their money last through retirement without losing it to stock market losses, how to avoid losing retirement accounts to taxes or poor planning; and how to protect themselves or their loved ones from losing their assets to nursing homes or home health care.

Women in Control Take Action Dee strives to be educated in the areas, which may

affect women especially before and after retirement. She has Master’s Certifi cation in Gerontology! She along with her legal team help women and their parents protect most of what they have acquired by having the important legal documents they need to avoid losses and mistakes when faced with critical illness!

Avoid Retirement Account Mistakes Dee also is a Charter Member of Ed Slott’s Master

Elite IRA Group (www.irahelp.com) educational training program designed to help me as an advisor provide help to anyone who saved during their working years in Retirement Accounts, such as 401k, 403b or IRAs. It is essential that woman, especially, know how to set up these accounts in the most secure and tax effi cient way; and to make sure that they or their heirs are not hit with a big tax bill or worse yet disinherit them.

Take advantage of a Dee’s “No-cost consultation” to get the knowledge you need! Book Dee to speak at any business, church or social function! You may also listen to her radio show on WNIR on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. The Milestone Center is a full service Center with a team of professionals, which provides : Financial, Life, Health, Supplemental Benefi ts Insurance, Investments, Tax Services, Property & Casualty Ins. and Estate Planning.

Having a home burglarized can be a traumatic experience. Losing the possessions, personal belongings and valuable keepsakes that you have worked a lifetime for can be heart wrenching. Being the victim of a theft can be a devastating occurrence, however, for most people the loss of property is secondary to the thought that someone has invaded their per-sonal space - ripped through their drawers and closets, destroyed valu-able keepsakes and wrecked havoc on their home. Losing the sense of safety that your home provides can be psychologically, emotionally and mentally disturbing. What can you do to help prevent this?

After dark, walk out to the street and look at your house from a thief ’s perspective. Are there places to hide? Are there valuables in plain site? Do windows and doors appear to be un-locked and unsecure? Would it be an

“easy target” for a would-be thief? If so, following these simple suggestions can help make your home less attrac-tive to criminals.

• Light up your property - front and back. Research indicates that lighting is one of the least expen-sive methods of crime control. Use timers to turn the lights on in dif-ferent parts of the house at differ-ent times. Use motion detectors.

• Trim trees and shrubs that are close to the premises. Overgrown land-scaping can provide a convenient place for burglars to hide.

• Do not tempt burglars by leaving yard equipment, ladders, bicycles and tools out where they can be seen.

• Have your newspapers and mail stopped when you go away.

• If you have an alarm system, use it all the time. Even if you leave the house ten to fi fteen minutes, set the alarm.

• Exterior doors should be of solid construction with heavy duty deadbolts. Forty to seventy per-cent of all burglars enter the house through unlocked doors and win-dows.

• Use locks on windows or consider metal grates to make them harder to open. Make sure they can be opened from the inside in case of an emergency.

• Valuables such as jewelry, cameras, silver, fi rearms and cash along with other expensive items should be kept out of plain sight.

If you would like more informa-tion or are interested in setting up a crime watch program, please contact

the offi ce of John D. Ferrero, Stark County Prosecuting Attorney at 330-451-7888 and ask to speak to James Knight, Certifi ed Crime Prevention Specialist, in the Victim/Witness Di-vision.

It’s no secret that I am a strong supporter of the Autism Society of Ohio. Since my oldest son was diagnosed with autism, I’ve immersed myself in autism awareness.

One of the things I’ve learned about autism is just how diffi cult it is for someone with autism to communicate with a stranger. But that isn’t a problem limited to those with autism. There are many other conditions that would cause someone to have trouble communicating, including Down Syndrome, developmental and cognitive disabilities, dementia and Alzheimer’s.

It might not seem important that people with special needs or adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s be able

to communicate with strangers, but what if they get lost? How will they tell a police offi cer where they live or who to call? In 2006, a fi ve-year-old boy with autism got lost and couldn’t tell the police his name or where he lived.

I tried to imagine my son in that position and realized that there were many children and adults in Summit County who would also be unable to communicate in a similar situation. Through my involvement with the Autism Society, I learned about a database developed by the Pensacola Police Department that lists individuals with communication issues. If one of the people in the database is lost, law enforcement can search the database to fi nd out where the person lives. With the Pensacola Police Department’s approval and assistance, I decided to replicate the database in Summit County.

The Take Me Home program was created in 2007 as a partnership between my offi ce and the Summit County Sheriff ’s Offi ce. There are approximately 1,300 individuals in the database, which lists a variety of physical attributes as well as emergency contacts and information specifi c to each individual. When someone who is registered with the program becomes lost, law enforcement can search the database to determine who the lost person is and whom to contact. Only law enforcement offi cers are able to access this database.

It’s a small step, but one that provides a sense of relief to those of us with a loved one in the program.

Sherri Bevan Walsh is Summit County Prosecutor. To learn more or register for the Take Me Home program, please

The transformational adaptive reuse of the historic Allen Theatre provides the new home for the Cleveland Play House, the nation’s fi rst regional theatre company. In the fi rst collaboration of its kind, PlayhouseSquare (the largest performing arts center outside of New York City), the Cleveland Play House (including the theatre masters program of Case Western Reserve University) and Cleveland State University collaborated to develop this unique repertoire theatre. The multi-headed client team forged the partnerships, programmatic intersections, and operational synergies essential to the viability of cultural arts organizations and academic arts education in this challenging environment.

The Allen Theatre was built in 1921 as a 3,000 seat movie palace. After being spared from the wrecking ball in the 1970’s, and undergoing a $15M renovation that reduced the Allen to 2,500 seats, it reopened in 1998 as a venue for Broadway musicals. A few years later, the theatre industry changed and three out of four major Broadway producers went bankrupt or exited the business. The Allen Theatre was marginally utilized, not economically viable. The Cleveland Play House, located miles away, was wrestling with harsh economic realities and considering development of a new complex, while Cleveland State University (adjacent) was also in need of upgraded theatre facilities. Each of the three entities was a client of the architect who

combined their agendas and programs to focus on the adaptive re-use of the Allen which would provide long-term economic benefi ts to the organizations as well as to this central, urban district. The signifi cant design challenge was to develop a “theatre within a theatre” (i.e. a very intimate contemporary 517-seat Main Stage within the volume of one of the largest theatres in America) while maintaining all of the historic features of the Allen.

The acoustic brief guided the design for repertoire theatre. Speech clarity without amplifi cation was an important goal, but the historic Allen was too wide to support unamplifi ed voice. Acoustic narrowing of the room was accomplished by developing new sidewalls and a “vineyard” concept of short height (pear-wood veneer) walls of the side boxes and cross aisle parapet to provide needed sound refl ections.

The historic sidewalls of the lower orchestra level of the historic Allen Theatre each feature three backlit vitrines separated by pilasters. New side walls are inserted within the original, effectively narrowing the house by twenty feet. The upper portions of the new side walls are scrims of perforated metal that are graduated in openness as they ascend. These scrims are selectively backed by acrylic, and thus are visually transparent (providing views to the historic sidewalls and illuminated vitrines) and partially acoustically opaque and shaped to refl ect

sound to patrons both under and in the shallow balcony. During performance, light is subtracted from the vitrines in the historic sidewalls and the historic ceiling coves, converting these scrims to visually opaque forms, forcing a perceptual narrowing of space now transformed to an intimate, contemporary theatre. Suspended ceiling panels conceal theatrical lighting positions and also direct sound energy, while affording glimpses of the historic upper ceiling. The seating is developed on a newly-formed orchestra and balcony level, and is no further than 55 feet to the fully equipped proscenium stage of the Allen Theatre. The materials of the new theatre are confi ned within a very narrow palette that borrows from but does not compete with the aggressive decorative scheme of the historic shell. An objective of the design was to create a dramatic tension between the old and the new that also symbolizes the attitude of the Cleveland Playhouse in its contemporary, artistic interpretation of older scripts that comprise a signifi cant portion of its repertoire. This tension between contemporary and legacy design and theatre is also to be found in healthy urban environments where legacy institutions and architecture are found co-exist, complement, and compete with contemporary initiatives. The project also developed new infrastructure and performer and stage support, as well as public amenities. The original sloped theatre underbalcony area was redeveloped into a (cobalt hue) lounge

and (amber hue) pre-function spaces for lectures and other events. During the planning phases, specifi c goals were discussed to minimize new construction areas for public spaces. This strategy was a deliberate decision to capitalize on the other amenities (restrooms, bar, etc) already present in the existing lobby of the Allen Theatre.

The project incorporates green building concepts designed for LEED-NC certifi cation. The most signifi cant sustainable design initiative is the reuse and revitalization of an underutilized theatre within the PlayhouseSquare District. The theatre was designed with sustainable integrated technology, including digital technology distribution and CAT6 infrastructure that reduce conduit runs, cable infrastructure, and installation labor resulting in less waste of materials and avoidance of hazardous materials. Equipment already installed in the existing facility but beyond useful life for this application was recycled. Some scavenged equipment within the Playhouse Square complex that was still functional was reused in the new theatre. The architect’s integrated technology also required the AV contractor to provide shop drawings electronically for review and in the fi eld. These guidelines follow the Sustainable Technologies Environmental Program (STEP) rating system. Packing and construction material was managed to avoid waste and avoid landfi ll.

Whenever I ask anyone to recommend a consignment shop, the fi rst name that comes up is Gerri’s closet. Gerri won the 2007 Akron Beacon Journal Best award and has won recognition in other publications as well, but there is no word like “word of mouth” and people are always bringing her name up to me. “You’d love her stuff!” they shout. Women know I have a passion for fashion and a tendency to shop too much. I often advise myself and my girlfriends to “Shop in your closet! You have lots of stuff in there!” But, girl, if you’re anything like me, dressing up is one of the most creative and satisfying experiences of your life! And at Gerri’s closet, I can indulge this passion without abusing my budget. Gerri has been stocking her consignment closet for fourteen years and doubled her size three years ago at her new location at 4195 Massillon Rd. in the Green Plaza in Green. Gerri started as a buyer and was in retail management. Her new location has taken her shop up a notch. You feel like you’re in a fi ne boutique with high ceilings, a beautiful chandelier, a cool, hip style and a staff of fashion consultants who offer a unique level of customer service. Look for fashion shows and events on line and schedule shopping parties at the store.

This spring, Gerri is featuring great clothing, handbags, accessories, shoes, and small home décor items. Get on her e mail list and join me in shopping not only in our closets but in Gerri’s huge, spectacular closet too.

Now you can shop in your closet and hers!

Then I found a gorgeous dress, a smart pair of brand new heels, and two fabulous tops, one all black sequin with a portrait neck and long sleeves. I would have paid a fortune for it at Sax or Nordstroms. I had so much fun shopping and there was so much to choose from!

This darling, old, grey house at 2597 E. Aurora Rd (Rt.82) in Twinsburg is packed with Twila’s treasures. The house was purchased at auction by Laurie Burnett. We are sure you are aware of the attrac-tive interest rates that we have been experiencing. We believe this activity will continue to flourish well into the year. Historically in Northeast Ohio our strong-est selling months are February through June. If your thinking of moving, don't hesitate! Moving is one of life’s more stressful events, which makes choosing the right company to assist you a very, very important decision. Trust me when I tell you – choose carefully, choose Hammond Movers. This is a family business built on a solid foundation of honesty, reliabil-ity, professionalism, and satisfi ed customers. It is obvious from the moment they answer the phone that they are proud of their name and reputation and your satisfaction is their goal. Our

family recently found ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to move on short notice, and sadly, amidst the passing of one of our dear parents. A fam-ily friend recommended Lenora and Dave at Hammond Movers and after having compared their rates, customer service policies, and client reviews, we hired them. This staff was nothing but professional from the moment I called to inquire about rates and availability, to the closing of the truck door after the last load of a 2 day move. They accommo-dated a last minute, but neces-sary, change in dates graciously.

They showed up on time, prepared for an 8 hour day, but stayed on for a 10 hour day. And then they came back for another 10 hours of back break-ing work the second day. No matter how many times I asked for

a box to be relocated, or a couch to be moved to a different corner of the room, I never experienced a complaint, cross word, or side-ward glance. The three man team sent to us conducted them-selves like gentleman, and for two days, they treated our fam-ily like they were helping their best friend move. They made sure to lay cloth on clean carpets and wear shoe covers where ap-propriate. They carefully tended to our precious items, and gently maneuvered large furniture so as not to damage the furniture or walls, woodwork or fl oors. They followed instructions on boxes so that each one was where I needed it to be when I began to unpack. It was the attention to these details that made a diffi cult move easier for us. But the best part was yet to come. At the end of the second day my husband and I dragged out tired souls to a bedroom where we expected to collapse onto a set of mattresses

on the fl oor. Really, assembling the bed and locating the box of linens could wait for tomorrow. To our delight, Hammond Mov-ers had the bed assembled…with our box of linens placed right on top. Was I grateful? Absolutely! Did I sleep well knowing I had chosen the best movers in North-east Ohio? You bet! Let me tell you this…I have hired many service providers in my 23 years as a homeowner; carpet cleaners, appliance repairman, window in-stallers, painters, landscapers…you name it. Some have been good, and some have been a dis-

appointment. But Hammond Movers stands out amongst themall and proved to me that there are still companies out there that believe in providing their cus-tomers superior service, at a fair price, delivered honorably, with a smile.

Have a move in your future? Don’t stress, call Lenora and Daveat Hammond Movers and tell them you’d like their family to help your family make this experiencea wonderful beginning to the nextchapter in your life. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

I was born in the early 80’s, so when I was little, VCR’s were just starting to become a household item. My parents tell me that they ran about $500.00 or so, so when we got one, it was a pretty big deal. One of the fi rst tapes they got for me was Mary Poppins and I loved it. I watched it over and over, literally until the tape broke. And when the tape broke, I cried until we got a new one. And then I wore that tape almost all the way out. I still have that second Mary Poppins, actually. I watch it pretty sparingly now, so as not to break it again, and when I do watch it, it’s like I’m a 3-year-old again. I’m certainly not ashamed to say that I was watching it recently and something really stuck out to me this time.

There is a scene in which Mary Poppins, a magical nanny, has just gotten home from a day of fantastic adventure with her two charges, Jane and Michael Banks. The children are terribly excited and keep asking her for more. They’ve had a wonderful time and they don’t want it to end. Her reply to this? “Enough is as good as a feast.”

I’m sure my interpretation of this is colored not only by our present economic state, but also by my own stinginess. I am, by nature, a very frugal person. I fi nd that at the grocery store, for instance, I don’t have a brand preference pretty much any of the time and I fi nd also, that I don’t necessarily allow myself to have any

preferences at all. I fi gure if I can get a pound of ground chuck for the same price or less as a few nice steaks, I’m going to go with the ground chuck. Not because I like it necessarily, but because I can have more for less. And doesn’t it make sense to spend as little as possible.

I’m like this with clothing, too. If I need a pair of shoes, for instance, I always look for the cheapest pair, telling myself that maybe I’ll buy a nice pair when I have enough money. The weird thing about this is that I’m not poor at all. Having just done my taxes, I am celebrating my second year as a single person in the work force living above the poverty line. You’d think that this would make me feel like splurging, but it doesn’t. It makes me feel frightened of losing what I have. And having admitted that in print, I have to acknowledge that this isn’t necessarily healthy (though I think I’ve known that all along).

Come to think of it, I’m like this with most things. As I was moving this last time, I found myself donating and throwing away everything that I didn’t need immediately and almost everything that wasn’t nailed down. My fi ancé even tried to dissuade me when I was throwing away things like clothes I still wear and things we actually need. I had gone to one end of the spectrum and it took another person to make me step back and realize it.

On the other end of the spectrum I see things on TV like the show Hoarders, in which I see people who spend their lives accumulating so much stuff that they end up literally buried in it. People who believe that gobs of moldy food and piles of trash have value and should be kept in the house. This is certainly not healthy.

In my line of work, I come into contact with certain individuals who literally cannot stop spending money. Who always need one more thing or a better version of something. They feel entitled to whatever they want, in as large a quantity as they want, whenever they want. This isn’t healthy either.

So where, as a culture or as individuals, do we fi nd a happy medium? Perhaps certain 29-year-olds fi nd it in viewing Mary Poppins. Perhaps by indulging in moderation, I can prevent myself from feeling deprived without treading into the dangerous territory of being buried alive in mounds of stuff or overextending myself by always chasing the bigger, better thing. Perhaps as a culture, we can benefi t from striving to live well, without living greedily. I think that’s what Mary Poppins meant when she was talking to Jane and Michael. That it is important to indulge – to have adventures, whatever that means to any one of us – and it is equally important to know when to stop. Enough is, indeed, as good as a feast.

Vulnerable With You

Tonight, with you I’m vulnerable.

To chance everything we have come to mean

to each other

by placing myself now

so completely before you

jeopardizing all

that you have come to mean to me.

As you listen, you give back.

You hold,

when others would let go.

You look,

when another would turn away.

You share my tears,

as they roll from my cheek unto yours.

Above all, my companion

you give your love

returning me

…to my deeper self.

Seeking the Right Person

The perfect ruby we have lost,

Some say it is to the East of us,

Others to the West.

--Kabir

Because we do not yet know how to see the beauty in everyone, we search for the perfect person, or perfect mate, believing that there are only a few individuals on this earth that we can truly love. We do this, of course, because our ability to love is limited.

Some who fi nd the one whom they believe to be the perfect person quickly run away. Being with someone we feel is perfect can make us even more painfully aware of our own imagined inadequacies. Deep down we may also believe that this relationship cannot last because we do not really deserve it. Waiting for this rejection to take place can be so painful that some do things to actually bring it about. They show their worst side, pick fi ghts, test the other continually. Anything to get the painful rejection over with! Many destroy the relationship before it sneaks up from behind and destroys them instead.

Is love a game of destroy or be destroyed? Needless to say, this sense of love is bound to bring fear in its trail. The more we are aware of how we unnecessarily shake up our relationships, the easier it is to stop ourselves. We do not have to live our life on automatic pilot, listening to our secret serpents.

We do not honor the spot we stand on. We do not see all that is available right where we are. The illusion has gripped us that someone better is living somewhere else, farther away, that someone better will appear tomorrow, or at another far point in time, that the right person could not possibly be two steps away. We do not see that every person could be the right person, if we looked through the right eyes.
