Cathy from Federal Hill Main Street gave a brief presentation about Main Street initiatives that are underway and planned for the near future. Here are some highlights:
• Raised $137,800 in grants and donations since January.• Secured $75,000 in Enhanced Services ongoing annual funding from South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP).• Raised funds and implemented year-round cleaning in the Business District five days a week, funded through SPGP and the FH
Business Association.• Raised funds and implemented year-round greening initiative including planting the existing 28 urns and adding 12 more, and
installing liriope groundcover in 105 tree wells. • Installed string lighting on both sides of E. Cross Street.• Repaired brick sidewalks on S. Charles and E. Cross – Light Street is next.• Hosted two corporate volunteer cleanup events (Under Armour & University of Florida). Planning community volunteer events
for the fall.• Hosted the CrushFest Block Party in April. Jazz & Blues Festival will be Sunday, October 27th.• Held multiple community input sessions, inviting all key stakeholders. Suggestions included having more family oriented events,
hosting festivals on Sundays, and improving communications among all stakeholders. There was a lot of interest in adding an event highlighting international cuisine in Federal Hill.
• Partnered with Cross Street Market to bring the Farmer’s Market every Saturday from May to October. • Next steps involve updating our strategic plan to include input from all key stakeholder groups to clarify specific goals and
metrics for the next one to three years.
We need your help! Please consider volunteering with the Farmer’s Market on Saturday Mornings for about an hour. Contact Andy Weaver at [email protected] if you can help one or more Saturdays. We are also seeking residents, business owners and property owners to join one of Main Street’s four committees:
• Design/Clean & Green • Promotions • Organization (includes Finance & Governance Sub-Committees)• Economic Restructuring/Business Development – looks at how to meet the needs of current and potential business owners and
property owners.
Please contact Cathy Rosenbaum at [email protected] or 410.727.4500 if you are interested. I hope you’ll seriously consider joining one of our committees or volunteering. You’ll have input in what projects are undertaken and how they are executed. Together, we can accomplish so much!
Federal Hill Main Street 2019 Annual MeetingBy Cathy Rosenbaum, Executive Director, Federal Hill Main Street
Thanks to all the residents, business owners and property owners who joined us on July 29th at Wayward for our Annual Meeting and Board elections. We had a great turnout! A big thank you to Wayward for donating the delicious munchies for our meeting!
Lauren from Downtown Partnership gave a brief explanation about “IKE”, a free-standing kiosk that will be located outside the market on Light Street. IKE is an “Interactive Kiosk Experience” that encourages exploration and discovery of Baltimore City and Federal Hill through enhanced wayfinding and communication about upcoming events and opportunities. IKE will benefit both residents and visitors, providing free public wi-fi, directional information for businesses and dining options, and information about upcoming neighborhood events. IKE will also deploy emergency messages, monitor air quality, incorporate three camera angles and be multilingual. There are currently about seven IKES installed throughout the city, with plans for 35 installations in total.

Beyond the Hill: Adventures in Global Home CookingAugust: IndiaBy Andy Monick
This summer, I have been working to eat less carnivorously. Health benefits of forgoing red meat aside, the blistering heat we’ve experienced around Baltimore has simply left me craving fresh food.
This dish, marathi rassa, certainly takes care of that need. By preparing in-season vegetables in a coconut mixture rich with traditional spices, the home cook is rewarded with a wholesome and filling dish. Cilantro-lovers rejoice - the fresh herb is foundational in this recipe. Serve over basmati rice for a light main course or alone as a side dish.Enjoy!
Marathi Rassa Prep: 10 minutesCook: 40 minutes
Adapted from Indian Instant Pot Cooking by Urvashi Pitre
Ingredients¼ c unsweetened, shredded coconut½ c hot water1 large, yellow onion1 can diced tomatoes4 cloves garlic2 T ginger, minced¼ c fresh cilantro, packed densely1 t turmeric½ t cumin¼ t ground cayenne pepper
1 T vegetable oil (or other oil of choice)½ c cashews4 c cabbage, sliced thin (approx. 1 small head)3 carrots, peeled and chopped1 large potato, roughly choppedSalt to taste
Instructions:1. Add the coconut and hot water to a food
processor. Allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes – adding onion, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, cilantro, and spices in the meanwhile.
2. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute.
3. Warm oil over medium heat in a large saucepan. Add the puree from the food processor and allow to cook without stirring until most of the water has evaporated.
4. Stir in the cashews and stir continuously for 2 more minutes.
5. Add the chopped vegetables and stir to coat. Reduce heat to low and simmer until vegetables are cooked, at least 30 minutes.
6. Add salt to taste. Serve warm.
Doing good in our communityevery day.
