The firste?fortsto developstandardsfor compressedgas cylindervalvethreadsfollowedimmediatelyafterWorldWar 1, and were inspiredby the difficultiesencounteredboth by industryand the militaryservicesbecauseof the multiplicityof connectionsthatwere then in use.

‘hroughthe activityof the Gas CylinderValveThreadCommitteeof theCo~ressed Gas Manufacturers’Association,Inc., materialprogresswasmde throughthe yearsthat follo.w$d,with the resultthat, when theUnitedStatesbecameinvolvedin WorldWar II, the gas industriesthemselveshad materiallyimprovedthissituation.Severalof the compressedgasindustrieshad achievedvirtualstandardizationat tremendouscost for ●replacementof valveequipment.Theirstandards, however, were not completelyforc!alizednor fullycoordinatedwith otherrelatedstandards.!!uchof theprogressbetweenWorldWar I and WorldWar II was the resultof interestinthe problemby the FederalSpecificationsFloard.

The circumstancessurroundingindustrialand militaryusersofcampressedgasesduringWorld?ar II broughtintoclearfecusthe needfor accelerationof the standardizingpro, jectfor cylindervalvethreads. They creatednot only the necessitybut alsoa splendidopportunityfor thecompressedgas industry, the Militaryservices, and otherFederalagenciesto studycooperativelythe standardizingproblemsof outlet.valvethreads.Thesestudiesresultedin closerdefinitionand appreciationof eachvalveoutletand in a more balancedrelationshipbetweenthe many typesand sizes.

●When the StandardsAssociationsrepresenting GreatBritain,Canada,

and the UnitedStatesmet in Ottawain October1945to considerunificationof screwthreads,a fairlywelldevelopedplan for standardizationofcompressedgas cylindervalvethreadswas presentedto the Conferenceby the ValveThreadStandardizationCommitteeof the CompressedGasManufacturers’Association,Inc. (CGMA). Theseproposedstandardsrepresentedthe experienceand knowledgeof compressed~s nmufacturers, valvemanufacturers, and the needsand requirementsof variedusersof gascylindervalves, includingthe Militaryservicesand otherFederalagencies.Approvalof thesestandardsto the extentto whichtheywere thendevelopedwas givenby the U.S. Departmentof Commerce, the U.S.Army,and the U.S.Navy throughthe InterdepartmentalScrewThreadCommitteefollowinga joint

,. meeting with the representativesof CGMA in August 1945. Much progresswasmade laterin thatyear at the CanadianSectionMeetingof CGMAtendingto unifyUnitedStatesand Canadianpractices.

DuringJanuary1946,throughconferencebetweenrepresentativesof CGMAValveThreadStandardizationCcmmitteeand the InterdepartmentalScrewThreadCommitteein Washington, agreementswere reachedthatresultedin finalapprOVd of considerableadditionalgas cylindervalvethreaddata. Thesedatawere includedin 1950supplementto HandbookH28. The 1957issueof H28includedmore detaileddataon outletand inletconnectionsthanwerepreviouslyshown.

The firstissueof FED-STD-H28/9,in accordancewith GovernmentPO1icy,

●removedthe detailsof the connections.Thesewere replacedby referenceto the Compressed-GasAssociation(formerlyCGNA) Standardv-1-1977.This standardincludednot only threadedconnectionsbut alsounthreadedyoke types. For medicalgas cylindervalveconnections,a pin indexsystemfor the yoke type connectionsis usedto preventcross-connectionsbetweengasses. Only when the pins in a yoke correspondto the holesin a valvewill a gas tightseal be possible. This systemwas submitted

to the InternationalOrganizationforStandardization(ISO)TechnicalCommittee58 and was adoptedin the standard1S0 407-1983.

FED-STD-H28/9Awas preparedby the DefenseIndustrialSupplyCenter(DLA-IS). It updatesFED-STD-H28/9to be in consonancewith the CompressedGas Association(CGA) StandardV-1-1987. The followingsignificantchangesin the threadedconnectipnsinclude:

(1) Additionof designformulasforNGO seriesthreads.(2)Additionof data for sizes 1.040-14NcKI-RH/LH-LXT,

1.045-14NG&RH/LH-INT,1.103-14NG0-RH/LH-EXT,1.108-14NG0-RH/LH-INT,1..120-14NG0-RH/LH-En, 1.125-14NG0-RH/LH-TJT, and 3/4-14NGf(c1)-5sDiameterdata for 3/4-14NGT (Cl)mastergageswere changedto agreewithlongthreadsspecified.

3. Definitions.Screwthreadtermsapplicableto thisstandardare

● definedin FED-STD-H28/land as notedin thisdocument. Exceptionsarefor taperthreadswherenon-standardsymbolshavebeen used. Thesearedefinedin Figure9.3.

4. Genera1 requirements...

4.1 Outlet connections. Valveoutletconnectionsand theirthreadsarelistedin Table 1X.1. Connectionsare detailedin ANSI/CSA/CGAStandardV-1.Threadrequirementsappearin subsection5.1.

4.1.1 The threadson the outletsare separatedintofourbasicdivisions-internaland external(INT and EXT),as well as right-handand left-hand(RH and LH). h!ithineach of the fourdivisions, furtherseparationis madeby varyingthe pitchand diameterof the threads. The diameterswithineach divisionare so spacedthatadjoiningsizeseitherwill not enterorwill not, engage.

4.1.2 As far as practicable, the designof connectionsand assignmentthe connectionsto gaseshas beenmade so as to preventthe“interchangeofconnectionswhichmay resultin a hazard. l,liththe exceptionof outletshavingtaperpipe threadswhichseal at the threads, each outletprovidesfor screwthreadswhichdo not sealbut merelyholdthe nippleagainstitsseat. Thesescrewthreadshave the Unifiedformbut are not in theregularseries.

●4.1.3 Past practicehas firmlyestablishedmany outletconnections

for specificgasesor groupsof gasesand in many casestheseconnectionswere retained. Sma11 differencesin the threadsand otherelementsof thesame connection were reconciled intoone formand size, properlyrecordedand defined. By adheringto existingoutletswherepracticable,it waspossibleto put the new standardsystemintoeffectwithouttheinconvenienceand expenseof a cumbersomeand costlychangeover.Alternateand co-standardshavebeen establishedfor some gases.

4.1.4 Keepingthe establishedpracticein mind whenclassifyingandassigningthe gasesto theiroutlets,an effortwas made to followa planwherebyright-handthreadswouldbe used for non-fuelgasesand forwater-pumpedgases,whereasleft-handthreadswouldbe used for ~el gasesand for oil-pumpedgases. Theseleft-handthreadsare identifiedby agrooveon the hexagonnut. An externa1 threadis usedon the valveinmost cases, but some importantgroupsof gaseshave an internalthreadonthe valve.

4.1.5 In the standardizationof compressedgas valveoutletconnections, more than one outlet is providedfor some gases. To provideinterchangeabilityof equipmentfor the samegas, adaptersmay be required.See ANSI/CSA/CGAStandardV-1.

U.1.6 The maximumradiusof any part of the valvefrom its centerlinehas been specifiedto insureclearancefor the smallest(3 l/8-in.)standardcylindervalveprotectingcap.

4.2 Inletconnections. Valveinletconnection”threadseriesare listedin Table 1X.2. Threadrequirementsfor theseseriesappearin subsection5.2.Othergeneralinformationappearsin ANSI/CSA/CGAStandardV-1.

4.3 Safetydevicethreads. The safetydeviceson highpressuregascylindervalvesare providedwith righthand threadsof the Unifiedform,19 threadsper inch. Threadrequirementsappearin subsect, ion 5.3.
