Design Procedure 1.0 Determine system ratio:

1.1 The “Quick Reference Ratio Selection Guide” (page 26) can be used to determine system ratio. The values used in this guide are extremely conservative and do not allow the designer flexibility in regard to remote operator handwheel size, maximum input torque, # of turns, etc.

1.2 The best way to determine the system ratio is to perform calculations

to determine system input torque and deflection. The system will operate effectively providing the operating torque does not exceed 75 ft. lbs. and deflection does not exceed 90°. Pages 27-29 provide instructions to perform calculations.

1.3 When auxiliary components are added to a system be sure to

consider their efficiency losses when performing calculations.

1.4 When the system ratio is determined select the appropriate Valve Station Actuator from Table 1.

Note: An additional option for designing a system is to reference pages 30 thru 31. This guide defines the information needed by B.W. Elliott’s Engineering Department to design a system.

2.0 Select system components, start at valve (see page 5):

2.1) Identify valve and determine Valve Coupling (see pages 6 - 8). 2.2) A double U-Joint (see page 9) is to be utilized in all standard systems, except when a “Space Limited Actuator” PN 22203-4 is used (ref. 2.4 below). 2.3) Determine Shear Pin (see page 9). The dash number designates the shear torque in ft. lbs.; ex. PN 22021-188 denotes a pin that will shear at 188 ft. lbs. The primary purpose of the shear pin is to prevent valve damage from excessive torque. Methods used to determine size are:

2.3.1) Maximum Valve Breakaway and Seating torque either from valve manufacturer or estimated based on hand wheel size x 2 and size up; ex., Max. Breakaway / seating torque = 80 ft. lbs. x 2 = 160 ft. lbs., use 22021-188. 2.3.2) From valve manufacturer, obtain torque value that will damage

valve, subtract 25% and size down, ex. Torque to damage valve is 200 ft. lbs - (200 x .25)=150 ft. lbs., use 22021-125.

2.4) Specify Valve Station Actuator from Table 1 (see pages 10 - 12). The Space Limited Actuator 22203-4 is used for applications where obstructions around or near a valve will not allow the use of a standard actuator. Valve coupling series 22061-XXX interfaces directly with actuator, Double U-joint and Shear Pin are not used. 2.5) Flexible Shaft (see page 13): To allow a 90° bend, the flexible shaft will require a minimum of 15.00 inches from an actuator input shaft or 15.00 inches away from an operator output shaft, to accommodate fittings and appropriate bend radii. When prohibited by space restrictions, A swivel adapter PN 22005 or 90° adapter PN 22004 can be used. These items interface directly with actuators and operators, and do not require additional mounting brackets (see page 25). 2.5.1) Flexible Shaft length for manufacture should be measured after all components have been installed. 2.5.2) Assemble Flexible shaft I.A.W. 2.0 Select system components (Cont’d.): 2.6) Clamps and Standoff Kits (see page 14) are used to support a flexible shaft. Optimally, a shaft should be supported near each end (approx. 6.00” from bronze sleeve) and every 3’ to 5’ in a straight run and at the beginning, middle and end of each radial bend. 2.7) Stuffing Boxes (see page 15) are used where a flexible shaft penetrates a deck or bulkhead when it is necessary to maintain watertight integrity. 2.8) Remote Operators (standard Uniflex geared systems): 2.8.1) Intermediate Operator (see page 16) is used when a valve must be operated from two locations. The unit is used in line between two flexible shafts and is normally bulkhead mounted. 2.8.2) Remote Operator (see page 17) flexible shaft routing thru bulkhead or thru deck. 2.8.3) Remote Operator, 90° (see page 18) flexible shaft routing on same side of bulkhead. 2.8.4) Deck Box (coverless) Operator (see page 19) is used where flush mount thru deck or bulkhead is required. When used in decks it should be limited to clean dry locations and used only if space restrictions prohibit the use of other operators. 2.9) Remote Operators (valve stem extensions / space limited actuator): 2.9.1) Remote Operator w / indication (see page 20) flexible shaft routing thru bulkhead or thru deck. 2.9.2) 90º Remote Operator (see page 21) flexible shaft routing thru bulkhead or thru deck. 2.9.3) 90º Gear Box Operator (see page 22) flexible shaft routing on same side of bulkhead. 2.10) Handwheels (see page 23). 2.11) Tee Wrenches (see page 24). 3.0) Installation, reference installation sketches pages 32 – 37.

MATERIALS: 304 SST, 303 SST, BRZ QD NUTS.

THESE VALVE COUPLINGS ARE USED ON NONRISING HANDWHEEL VALVES, RISING HANDWHEEL VALVES, AND RISING STEM VALVES. THE UNITS ARE FABRICATED FROM STAINLESS STEEL AND ARE AVAILABLE IN SIZES TO FIT VALVE HANDWHEELS WITH DIAMETERS RANGING FROM 3 TO 27 INCHES. ALL UNITS HAVE A QUICK DISCONNECT FEATURE, ALLOWING OPERATION OF VALVE AT THE VALVE LOCATION. THE UNITS ARE ATTACHED TO EXISTING VALVE HANDWHEEL SPOKES USING U-BOLTS. U-BOLTS ARE SIZED TO FIT AROUND HANDWHEEL SPOKES. THE THREADED LEG LENGTHS ARE SIZED TO PROTRUDE THRU THE COUPLING BASE AND ACCOMMODATE LOCKWASHERS AND NUTS. NO MODIFICATIONS TO EXISTING VALVES ARE REQUIRED. THE VALVE COUPLINGS ARE CONNECTED TO A DOUBLE U-JOINT USING A WOODRUFF KEY AND ROLL PIN.
