Fermenter Nitrogen Blanket Control

Fermenter Nitrogen BlanketingHygienic Competence

Nitrogen blanketing to fill tank dead space is a process

commonly utilized in the chemical, petrochemical and biotech/

pharmaceutical industries. A pressurized layer of inert nitrogen

gas is used to purge air from a vessel, while eliminating reactivity

between the media and the dead space occupying gas. Although

a seemingly simple process on the surface, the strict

requirements with respect to cleanability and cross

contamination prevention mandated by the highly regulated

pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries introduce a new

level of complexity to this application.

Standard off-the-shelf components typically used in these

applications inherently cause problems with cleanability, are

highly susceptible to contamination and can result in issues with

acid or foam upon exhausting. They are simply not fit-for-

purpose. Downtime, maintenance costs and compromise of

product quality in these highly regulated industries are all risks

introduced by utilizing the common standard 3/2 solenoid

component solution.

As a learning process organization that isn’t afraid to try new

things and has the competency to convert these attempts into

success, Burkert decided to find a true solution to this problem.

Starting organically by analysing the basic function of the

solenoid control valve currently used we were able to isolate its

core function from its weaknesses in this application. The result

yielded a fully sterile dual bellows valve control solution with

pressure setpoint feedback suitable for use in aseptic

environments. Through innovation a true fit-for-purpose solution

was born and in-turn concerns involving cleanability, cross-

contamination and maintenance are all but eliminated.

Flexibility in Customized Systems

We aren’t looking to be your component supplier, we want to be

your partner in system design. At Burkert we thrive on working

with our customers to deliver a custom tailored solution that

meets your needs better than what you otherwise thought was

possible Integration of valves, sensors, logic is our specialty and

where we set ourselves apart from our competitors. Sit down

with us, tell us your ideas and we will make them flow.

ELEMENT

Designed exclusively around hygienic requirements. Rounded

stainless steel surfaces, hermetically sealed process boundary,

wash-down resistant seams and electrical connections

provide superior performance in hygienic process

environments.

Hygienic Control Heads

Universally adaptable control heads can be combined with all

commercially available valve types which utilize a rising stem

upper actuator configuration. The control head is not only

durable and designed to withstand chemical wash down

environments but equipped with industry leading preventative

maintenance measures to monitor cumulative spindle travel

and valve stroke count, yielding total piece of mind.

Process Efficiency

Systems and solution design with the goal of eliminating the

inherit weaknesses and routine downtime associated with the

status quo. Total cost of ownership, reliability and peace of

mind are mandatory criteria for every system design process.

Bellows Valve

Superior control with the ultimate level of process safety and

reliability. Wetted parts and process connections of our

bellows valves are designed as true fit-for-purpose aseptic

environment components. Modularity and system integration

capabilities are key competitive advantages.
